Anyone need a deckie
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Mon, 2010-05-31 11:50Gday all,
My contract was cancelled a little while ago and I finished up work on friday. I am free for all this week and the forseeable future until I can get another job. If anyone is heading out midweek and is looking for a deckie please let me know will chip in for fuel/bait/beer and provide own gear etc and have RBFL.
Preferably heading out wide doing some bottom bouncing as I will probably do some small boat squidding/fishing myself this week in between applying for jobs.
Thanks in advance, PM me or give me a bell 0423811759.

Bottom bashing our from Dawsville Cut??
Submitted by hunterdive on Sun, 2010-05-30 20:37hi guys
I've been heading to Mandurah this weekend, fortunate enough to have some friends with a house on the canals in Dawsville. Can anyone recommend any bottom fishing out from the cut. I was going to start with the Five Fathon Bank, and look around for some ground. How close is the bank to shore down that way. Any other tips for that area would be awesome.

Ryobi Safari servicing
Submitted by shanedm on Sun, 2010-05-30 20:08Hey guys a friend of mine has a Safari reel and the clicker on the drag has kind of ceased to work so when line is being pulled there is no noise being made. Just wondering if anyone knows how much it would cost to fix a problem like this (if it can be fixed) and where I could get it fixed? Cheers

Bream - Swan River
Submitted by ADDICT- dUFFMAN on Sun, 2010-05-30 15:09
I have been fishing in the Swan over the past month these being my first experiences with bream.
Firstly i tried Garratt Road Bridge where me and my mate only managed a small flatty. Only having 5 minutes fishing time left we decided to try the little jetty upstream infront on the rowing club. First drop my mate caught a 20cm bream
then 3rd drop for me i pulled a 27cm, so 2 bream in 5 minutes and we had to go.
We returned the next week to pull 18 from that jetty in 2.5hrs, the biggest being 32cm and the rest averaging 27-28cms.
Tried also the jetty near Redcliffe bridge and pulled a few from there, also caught my first bream on soft plastics (a 6" natural gulp worm). The bream hit this in teh shallows near the concrete pylons and even JUMPED to try to shake the hooks, was 29cm my pb.
Have returned to these spots this w.e. and the rains must have washed em downstream as no hits at all in both locations.
All were released :D
ps sorry about the large image size
First time user and poster
any tips on downsizing the photos would be much appreciated.

Leatherjacket plague
Submitted by bod on Sat, 2010-05-29 23:01Ravenous swarms of chinaman leatherjackets are eating everything in sight in NSW.
They could challenge the South American piranha for viciousness and they can make sharks look positively docile.
A small, innocuous-looking fish called a chinaman leatherjacket is swarming in Sydney waters, attacking and eating anything that moves, from bare fishing hooks to large marlin.
From 10cm to about 40cms long, the leatherjackets look nothing like the popular perception of a marine predator, having tiny beak-like mouths a few centimetres wide.
But inside is a set of teeth like razor-sharp chisels. Anglers complain of leatherjackets biting straight through fishing hooks.
Geoff Somerville, who operates Ibex deep sea fishing charters out of Botany Bay said that the chinaman letherjackets had returned to Sydney waters in the past few weeks after several months of making life hell for fishermen on the south coast.
"They are back in plague proportions, the numbers are unbelievable," Mr Somerville said.
"They have been stripping the bottom of teh ocean of food in some places. The desirable fish like snapper leave because there's nothing left for them to eat.
"If you do manage to hook a desirable fish and don't bring it to the boat quickly enough, all you'll reel in is a head or a skeleton.
"The jackets just strip strip the fish bare of flesh. They'll follow a fish up to the boat and then swarms of them will just sit under the boat and it becomes impossible to fish."
The leatherjackets' aggression and gang attack behaviour has been revealed in a stunning video shot at the scallop beds in Jervis Bay a few weeks ago, which showed leatherjackets attacking a large octopus.
Modern Fishing Magazine write Al McGlashan said that on some days the fish were so aggressive he feared what would happen if someone fell in the water.
"I've caught and seen mako sharks, tiger sharks, all manner of sharks and fish like barracuda - but leatherjackets are the most vicious fish I've ever seen," he said.
"Sharks can actually be quite shy and wary, but the leatherjackets will eat anything and they aren't afraid of anything."
There were reports a pack of 40cm leatherjackets had attacked a 2.5m marlin as it was being brought in to a boat during a tournament at Port Stephens last month.
"We are getting guys who have lost hundreds of dollars worth of tackle in a day because the jackets bite off anything put in the water. They are losing $30 lures one after another," he said.
"Smaller ones of 10cm to 15cm long have come into the Harbour in the past few weeks and it can be actually impossible to fish."
Chinaman Leatherjackets are one of the most important species in the NSW commercial trap and trawl fisheries.

Mining companies- Employee and Contractors Rec Fishing Policy
Submitted by Salmo on Sat, 2010-05-29 22:29Got a question for those who are working for mining companies.
Do many companies have no fishing policies on work sites, rigs, work camps etc
I heard a story today that with the new Barrow Is project that staff arent allowed to fish, even when not on shift ....but the established operation (maybe a different company) does allow their staff to go fishing.....
I thought it sounded strange....
Do different companies have different policy for wokers, even if the contractor's could be doing work for both???
thanks

Fishing today
Submitted by DieHard on Sat, 2010-05-29 19:33Hey People just a little report on todays fishing session.
well i got down to spinikers (spelling) at 12pm i was setting up my fishing gear and met leemo there as we were talking i was setting up my big rod hes big rod goes off! that thing wasnt stopping. going straight! after about 10mins the line gave in and the fish got away, after checking the line we saw not abrasion marks but teeth marks... which made us think it could have been a shark as there were also head shakes.
anyways that made me pumped. with all my gear set up i casted out the big rod, we were flicking baits and lures out with no succes. i reeled in the big rod and saw a huge bit about 0.5cm from the hook
.
we got the plastics and light rods and headed for the lighthouse. there were a few people there using bait etc. but we casted out our Berkley Power baits Watermelon/Pearl 3" and with in a few minutes i had caught the first fish a herring. i had stirred that school up and they were going crazy for the plastics. unfortunatley i had 3 herring but one landing and it was very good size. anyway Leemo casted out and got a hezza aswell as i was reeling in i gave the last twitch and out of nowhere came a snook. First snook i ever caught we were busy silencing it when it fell down the rocks and a crab started eating it alive. but then it swam away.
we started walking towards the re-fuel jetty and i casted out. waited about 20 secs while i was talking then first twitch and on the sink what was called for a fair size skippy went for the placcie i was playing around with it and messing with the drag and i forgot to set the hook, the thing was peeling of drag and then nothing it spat the hook :(. After that Leemo hooked up also to a skippy and with him saying you need to set the hook he forgot himself HAHAHA and lost it hahaha.
we headed back to the disabled platform and casted out the big rods with fresh hezza fillets but we wernt catching anything. Leemo whent to go get a buffy with some of my lunch bread :D while i stayed with the big rods. we came back after being busted as it went straight under the rocks :P.
We then decided to go back towards the lighthouse for a second bash at the Hezza and hopefull chance of catching a skippy or tailor but with no luck we started heading back to the disablled platform once again when we saw a comotion going on :O we walked to the rocks and saw 2 stingrays feefing of the rocks. it was natural instinct Leemo and i at once dropped our rods and SPRINTED to the disablled platform to grab our big rods and get a ray. we got the big rods now lets get a ray we tried several times to get one with no luck. Leemo got snagged and was trying to get it unsnagged when a Blak ray came over and ate his bait! BAM! Leemo was on!with it slowly but surely making for the harbour mouth leemo stayed in pursuit climbing over all the rocks 50m west. i ran back to the platform and cam back to the lighthouse with the gaff and gimblet. the ray then took leemo back towards spinnikers and he followed 50m east. he was pretty exhuasted and then after about 20-25 minutes the ray had its first sun taking off to the re-fueling jetty and then ping! line snitched on the barnicles of the pylons. ray was estamated 30kg +/- it was a great sight.
After that we were all pretty tired and i had to go home. adn im sure Leemo was tired form hearing those pants :P
oh well maybe next time ill hook up and maybe next time well land a ray.
Thanks for making this fishing session a great one Leemo!!!!

Salmon at the Mole
Submitted by slam on Sat, 2010-05-29 09:36Went down to North mole yesterday for a wander at lunch & plenty of large Salmon were getting caught, some getting nailed a foot from the rock wall! A small school were hanging 20m off the wall & getting pinged now & then. Good to see they are still around. Maybe the blow brought them in close.
What is wasn't good to see was the amount of rubbish dumped in the rocks, ranging from beer bottles to line & bait bags. Not saying its all from fishers but how hard is it to take rubbish home with you. Very disappointed with the obvious lack of care by some people.
Maybe give fisheries officers the power to fine people if they get caught red handed.

2011 Exxy comp - When
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2010-05-28 16:24Just thought I'd put the question out there, I'm sure asking people when they want it and then have it set to another time is just asking for trouble. But here's how I see it, school holidays are around the 22nd of April next year. I'm not sure when easter is, need to find out. Generally speaking the full moon after easter shuts the surface down a bit and if its early April theres still a chance of a cyclone. March is out due to Gamex and the AIBT comp. So it leaves the first 2 weeks of April and May.
Then there is the moons which can be added to it, for the bottom fisher guys the neaps are generally better. So that narrows it down further. Has anyone any ideas when they want the comp so we can start giving everyone plenty of notice.
Cheers,
Adam
