Brag Board

Brag Rights, Catch and Release or Unusual Captures

Finally a toothy monster other than a bronzie.

Our weekend away managed a lot of first for us both diving and shark fishing. We managed to get 2 very nice nurse sharks in. Few photos where taken and off they went again. Was hoping for a big mako or hammerhead because of how deep the water was where we dropped our baits but ah we'll another species off the list but not a shark I want to catch again, they are lazy don't fight much at all and obviously being protected not something you want to be playing around with at all. Both big females swam off strongly and didn't seem worried about the catch and release.

A few fish lately

Heres a couple fish we've caught on my week of r&r... Drove down to Mandurah for a whiting pop on the flats but as we drove up the shore line I realised it wasnt going to be a great day with the water line 10m further out than the last time I fished the area being a dead low tide. After jagging a few mullet from a huge school and a couple small whiting I decided to a move to the coast was in order. Walked out onto the reef around midmorning and cleaned up on tailor up to 60cms catching 8 or 9 in around an hour, the maria bullchop catching all the fish. Meanwhile my brother fished the inside of the reef and caught this stonker 38cm yellowfin on the surface.

Friday morning Cody and I took the boat out and the plan was to catch some herring at Carnac then push on to the ffb and float out the herring for a chance at a mackie or ytk. The easterly was fresh as we motored out to the islands, with Cody dropping 3 herring on waxwing at the first reef we stopped at. The wind really whipped up to 20knts+ so we stayed around the island exploring as we had never fished there before. Ended up finding a few tailor hidey holes and the sizes were great with fish up to 58cms hitting the waxwing and bullchop on the surface.

Saturday morning I took dad and Cody out for a shallow inshore bash 10mins from the ramp. First drift Dad manages a just undersize pink.

I then spot 3 or 4 birds working an area a couple hundred metres away, and when I saw a solid fish clear the surface I yelled out LINES UP, TUNA! Fish are still breaking the surface as I motor towards them and I make sure to kill the engine a fair way upwind making sure I dont spook them. I punch out a bullchop while Cody casts out a stickbait he bought the day before. Every 15 seconds or so a fish breaks the surface in between 2 cray floats 30m apart. I called them for longtail as a couple were pushing a metre long. As we drift into casting range Codys sickie gets wholloped in a surface explosion and his 8lb starts burning off the 2500ci4. The fight is short lived as we suspect the tail might have nicked the mainline. The fish seem to have spooked so shot back over to the reef hoping for a bigger pink. Nothing was hitting the plastics and baits on the bottom and the "tuna" were back on the boil around the cray pots again so I rigged up some xmas tree skirts and trolled towards the fish. I think it was on our second pass Dad yells and I turn from the wheel to see an explosion on the surface, then another one and Dads on big time. Cody and I scramble to get the other lines in as the fish screams for the fad (cray rope), by the time we start chasing the fish down it seems we're too late and we're tangled around the rope.

Finally get the line free and seeing as though the rod was in my hands I had a go at reeling the fish in ha ha. As we got colour I hand the rod back to dad and I'm calling it a massive "tuna" until it breaks the surface then I realise its a mack! My heart immediately sank as I noticed the shimmering green colour, ohwell, a mack is a mack but!

Heres a pretty cool shot from Codys Gopro3 mum and I bought him for chrissy..

We had a couple more strikes over the morning but none of the hooks stuck and we left them still jumping at midday. Went back first thing yesterday with some trolling minnows to find the cray pots had been pulled and removed and the fish had gone, bugger.. Cheers Beau

jurien bay sambo

Yesterday Rotto Dive for Crays

Not fishing in the sense of rod and reel, but im a bit stoked about the contents of the catch bag at rotto, in 3m of water!

Managed to get 5 males after finding countless BIG girls around, and around 50 little males.

Biggest was 145cm weighing 2.1kg, with 2nd being 135mm and 1.7kg.

Dhuey Fever

Brock's new PB tailor

Headed out at 6 this morn from Hillarys to troll the 3 mile for macks and after a few hours and several lure changes, me young bloke was a bit bored so we had a few drifts in the 20s and got a good feed of whiting and one size flatty (brock's first in the blue stuff) using placcies on patternoter rigs before headin in. We stopped at our little tailor spot on the way in and the water was crystal so out went the usual lure on Brock's rod and sure enough it was hit at the usual spot on the reef. 430mm chopper but the kid wanted another so next troll we hooked up again. Few tense moments coz the slight seabreeze was pushing us back to the reef and me tryin to video with my fone, move the boat when needed and net the fish at the same time, but thankfully made it in the net. I love fishing with my best mate, what a trooper. Sorry bout the language, I ensure you he knows that only grown ups can say words like that lol. Told him after that he had it easy coz it had part of it's tail missing haha

Second Metro Tiger

Took a couple of hours to get this girl in lastnight, quick release again and she swam away without any help

So much respect for Chris fish and the other guys landing larger models on surf rods I was in a world of hurt by the end of it even with a boat rod

A few shovel nose

Went fishing last night off the beach in jurien hoping for a big mullaway, had no luck as such with the mulla but still had a bit of fun with these few. The smaller one was good fun on my new bait runner

australia day

With the weather finally looking favourable we decided to head north with the wife Sal, son Nathaniel and daughter Jo. Left home at 6.00 for the two hour trip, got to Lancelin at about 8.00 to be geeted at the beach by a tractor bogged. feeling very confident now of a beach launch we went where there were plenty of other 4 wheel drives. fortunately everything went well for us.

headed out through the reef with the wind still howling, so decided to sit around and catch some bait till the wind dropped, about an hour later with the wind dropping headed out for the 30-40 metre mark.  on the way the sounder was showing a great amount of structure and fish, so thought we would give it a go.  first drop and nathaniel is on, landing a nice baldie, it went quiet so we moved on the sounder lit up again so round we go and second drop next it was Jo's turn with the fish putting up a reasonable fight. we knew it was something decent, she soon had colour revealing her first ever dhuie,74cm and 7.2 kg.

next was my turn, after a short fight another dhuie 75cm, 7.3kg [phew I just beat her] then Nathaniel brings up another baldie, at last Sal is on and up comes a small blackarse, with her complaining that she can only get small the small ones she drops her bait over again and yes she's on this time it is more serious, she soon has colour a nice dhuie about 90cm 11.2 kg. now she's smiling, but what a day throwing good size dhuies back because you already have your limit is hard, but thats the rules.

Decided at this stage to ring the brother in law who had knocked back the offer to come out wth us, while on the phone my line decided to take off so threw the phone to Nathaniel to keep talking while I reeled in a nice baldie, then it was his turn, I think at this stage my brother in law hung up to go cut his wrists or something, well nathaniel brought up another two dhuies in quick succession, then a small blackarse. by this time the esky was looking rather healthy, two dhuies, four baldies, two blackarse, we were done, had our limit of demersals, so with the wind picking up it was a slow wet trip back home but you couldnt wipe the smiles from our faces with our best ever nearly local trip ever.

Metro Tailor

Hi all this is my first post on the forum, long time reader though.

Caught this half decent Tailor last Saturday night at about 8:30pm rock fishing NOR. 4/0 x3 gang and a small weight with 40lb mono leader. Weighed in at 700g and 44cm, not too shabby for the middle of summer and metro fishing. Lost another two that felt around the same size. Good little session with a pike and a few port jacksons caught too to keep me busy.

New PB - Canning River Flatty

Far from a glamour shot but I upped my PB this morning from 53cm to 54.5cm.

Great fish that put up a wicked little fight in the shallows, got him on a gold Cultiva Mira Shad.

Contrary to the reports I'm reading I am finding it quite hard to get onto flatties this season, but the ones I have got have all been great sizes.

Blues buddy's and a killer hangover.

After consuming way to much alcahol on aussie day I stayed committed  to going for a dive with my mate today. He didn't drink at all but I was feeling not so good and just the 4x4 in to the spot had me feeling I'll haha. I suited up slowly as josh was done in a flash and jumped in. I was about to get in when he yells out and holds up a very nice grouper!! Barstard that fish should of been mine!!!

I got in swam 100m up the rocks, left a few queenys and small grouper and started feeling real bad, screw this I'm getting my grouper and I'm out hahaha, shot one of about 4 swimming around a rock. Seen a few flatties right where we got in and I got 4 in a few minutes. That's it I'm out nice spew on the rocks and felt better after that.

In the short time we where in the water we got 5 flathead, 2 king George, 6kg grouper and a 14-15kg one.

A few pics from metro January 2013

Lifes good, been getting a swag of crays however struggling to bag out - finding females and undersize in plague proportions, its definitely been a fun month off :-)

Jig - Eupro 120gm

First time for everything - Take 2

After last year finally managing the first legal Pinkie, Australia Day yielded our first legal Dhufish after eons of trying. Left from Ocean Reef at 6ish, pleasantly  suprised by the few numbers in the car park. Trolled around and up and down for ~2.5 hours in the hope of first metro Mack, but with no luck. Decided to head out a little to a spot we had some sambo fun on a couple of years ago, and marked an interesting tiny peak on the way out. Hit that spot on the way back in. First drop and up popped a double of 2 little Dhuies, 1 at 48cm, and the other about half that...they went swimming back down with no problems...a couple of drifts later and my wife was on to something good. She has a back injury unfortunately for her, so it was up to me to lift, and she wound. The result was this 82 cm model, in very good nick due to the slow retrieve....so we decided to send it back on a release weight to be sure, and it swam down. I'm calling it half each!

Metro Macks - TICK

Another 'Code' cracked lol

First try in the Yak

Well today i decided that im becoming a yakker, so down to my local i went. i brought all the neccesitys and by midday i was on the water!! I wasn't to confident in catching anything, but i went on anyway, mainly just to see how the yak would go and to get used to it. It felt awesome being so close to the water, slipping under little jettys and things, it was great!!

I had travelled a fair way and was contemplating on heading back. The heat of the sun pounded onto my head, frying up all my leg hairs, while the salt on my skin shriveled up into little circles on my burning body. I was determined to give it a bit more time though and I stumbled across an awesome looking spot and flicked my little Crank right down the side of the pontoon. I cranked it down and little taps instantly. I kept pulling it away from the fish to see if he would liven up and try to smash it. It worked, as my rod belted over and i steadied the yak. After a short tussle i could see him below me, a typical canal Bream of about 30 :) Slid the new net under him and i snapped a few pics. I was stoked with my first fish on the Yak!!

I kept on hoping for another one. Back to the same spot and not long after another fish, a little bit smaller than the last. Its great fun trying to control fish in tight structure ... unless it busts you off!! I guided him into the net and took some more pics!

After that i packed it in, and took the long paddle home, which destroyed me -.- But i was happy with its first trial and looking forward to the next session :) The Yak is a Malibu Mini-X BTW

Cheers, Callum

Lastnights biggest tailor 62cm.

Greenback off the Busso Jetty

Caught this lastnight, been catching the bigger ones on a regular basis over the past few weeks. We have also been bagging out on 35-45 cm.This was taken on a phone camera so the quality isn't the best unfortunatly.

My mate caught the pinky at the bottom a few nights earler, it also went 60 cm, tasted good too :P.
