KGs

My son asked me to post these photos of some whitings that he caught today in Warnbro Sound. It's the first time he has caught legal sized KGs and was quite proud of himself.

Boy's First Banger

Took the old man and my boy Lachie out today with a plan to hit the 40's. The swell and chop were running 45 degrees at each other which made it a bit bumpy but were able to push out at 24kn with a bit of groaning from the old boy.

Wanted to give the jigs a crack today and hooked up on my third crank and Lachie was onto me like a hawk and I reluctantly handed over my TypeJ but it spat the hooks after he gave it too much slack. He caught a baby blackarse and then went very quiet and the poor kid threw up 3 times and after the 3rd one I drove back to the 30s to get him some fresh air and hit a spot in 26m.

Bloody hard fishing and we got a couple of good hits but Lachie was moaning so I told him 1 more drift and chucked a whole squid on my drift bait rig and as we went over the ground it bent in half. Lachie miraculously came back to life and I was again handing the rod over and the fish went off like a cracker peeling line off and pulling the rod tip into the water so I gave him a hand keeping the pressure on and after a decent fight it began to surface 10m from the boat and he was already hooting when he saw it. Gaffed him in and you can see the joy on his face. Not bad bagging a 63cm banger just shy of your 10th birthday on a PE2 setup after being close to death!

The old boy bagged a 43cm blackarse on the next 'last drift' and last drifts 3 and 4 were getting uncomfortable in the strengthening wind so he headed in fairly satisfied.

Shallow dive

Got some cracker crays in close then spent half hour on occy. Could have easy got more . Couldn’t be bothered . Getting soft :)

Got the Blues

Thought I'd do a Mandurah reccy yesterday and headed down to grab Dad and my son who went down Fri night and hit the water at Dawesville at 11am.

Tide was very, very low and I'd been told to drop in 0.8 to 1m and we headed down the Harvey to a spot I have halfway down and ran the nets from 1m to 0.8 and it was only tiddlers but the bigger blues were in 1m+.

We pulled the nets and headed much further south and spread them out further and ran them from 1.6 to 0.8m. Finally got a size one in 1.2m and again on the second run so we moved the rest along that contour and managed to pick up 7 size crabs and threw back 5 that were only just size and about 20 that were 1-2mm under.

Hard work doing 18 miles and at least 10-12 runs on 10 nets but I reckon I've found a nice lil honey hole for the coming weeks, got a feed of fresh, clean blues and spent quality time with my dad and oldest boy.

Chrissy / New Years Period

Havnt posted anything for a fair while now and because Im now back at work bored Ithought I would throw up a few photos of the few catches on the few days off at Chrissy and New Years.

-Crays were thick again this year, getting full pots right up until mid - late December. Chrissy lunch is always a winner, I usually cook up about 15-20 crays for the family lunch. On a side note I have been fishing the same spot for the last 6-7 years and have been getting big numbers in that period. This year was the first time I had other people potting around me and the first time Ive had pots move. Thankfully none went missing but will be looking to sound out a new patch for next year I think.

-Just before Chrissy was able to get out for a quick fish, was able to get a good bag with 2 dhuies and 2 baldies. Dhus were around the 15kg mark and in shallow around the 25-30m mark on small bits of ground. The dhu in the photo was the one my mate caught.

-I think yabbies have to be one of the best feeds going around, on par with Marron. Took the nets to a mates farm used a couple of pesky birds as bait and an hour later had a good feed or yabbies which were all great size. Garlic yabbies with rice is the best!!

-Start of the new year focussed on getting onto a few crabs, first in the swan and then mandurah. Mandurah is way easier to get a bag than the swan and with the new 5 per person rule I had to share the swan catch with 4 blokes haha. Swan crabs are so much bigger than the Mandurah ones though, you may be able to see the comparison in the photos.

Now that Im back at work I think for the next few weeks I will be focussing on getting a few Marron and hitting the crabs whenever I can, hoping for some low winds over the next few weekends so can get back out on the fish as the freezer is looking a bit bare.

YTK

A few yellowtails from metro and up the coast from past few months. Nothing huge yet but numbers are great

Day off Mandurah

took opportunity Saturday to head out, forecast not the best but once out, conditions ideal! Slow early, then this tiger came for a visit, easy 3m+. seemed to then set the fish on the bite and picked up a couple of dhues ~ 10 and 5kg. Called it a day by 11am so good times!

Opened the account

Went out for a quick flick yesterday before the wind came up. Come home with a couple of nice size black butts, kg and this nice specimen went about 13 kegs happy days

Great day out

super happy to get out yesterday, seems like ages ago the ban started.my 13 year old is showing interest and was keen enough to set his alarm for 2 am, leaving for 2 rocks at 3.00 am, on the water at 4.00, I love heading out in the dark and watch the day come alive, had a great morning , have started the season well with just under 90 cm Dhu , had great fun chasing the birds on the way home and having multiple hookups on little tuna, it was awesome listening to my son laughing and having so much fun , I hope everyone has a safe and happy Xmas and new year.

Sweet Meat Run

The Mrs wanted for fish for xmas but her family are fairly fussy so the plan was to bag some sandies then explore the 30s in the hope of a dhu swimming in close. Getting a skin lesion carved out of the nose today so a day off work for a solo mission yesterday was the go.

Found some nice sounder action and pulled out a 47cm model and gave it another 5 drifts and moved into my fave spot. A few wrasse and not much action then hooked what I called for a small snapper to pull in a nice 37cm darkened anus.

Tonnes of cray pots blocking my drift so I scouted around trying a few areas of interest for zilch so headed back to the first area and drifted a different mark and pulled in a nice 46cm KG a couple of hundred m off the lump in flatter hard ground. Was getting lots of similar hits on the 7/0 hooks so hopefully I've finallly nailed a KG spot.

Beaut day on the water and some 10/10 fillets for xmas lunch!

Open day

Had my ass flogged all day by my deckie . ( Peter) Last drift I managed to get a good bite. 50 lb braid light for me. Called it for stingray. On the last spiral prior to hitting surface. My circle came free. Lucky he was screwed. Other fish was a cracker also peters kgs where thumpers also black ass average. Many fish under sized. Many. Over(5 at 5) they all swam away.. cracker morn

Pink on the troll

Checked the pots Sat morn and thought we would troll back and see if anything might jump on. FMD if this fella jumped on and the father in law got tick off his first pink on a hard body diver. Damn the Ban   ! couple of pics and he swam away. Now thats everyone bar me still, that has managed a pinky on my boat.  When it happens its going to be a ripper!!

Need a bigger bag

just managed to squash 8 in the catch bag, 30 mins dive this morn.

Mate got exactly the same.

Left them biting !

Rookie Season Bag-out (Crays)

Long time between posts on here, it's good to be back.

So my Father just brought the family a new boat (Barcrusher 670c) after selling the Whitley some 5 years ago. Being good sons my brother and thought it best to take full advantage of the situation, so we decided to run some cray pots for the first time this season.

Pots have been in the water off of Mandurah for 2 weeks now and we have steadlly been increasing our catch rate. Today was our best to date with 18 caught, one tiny red was released and a size white released also for our bag of 16.

Happy Days Crays for Christams!

Hanging out for the Demersal ban to finish so we can get into some decent fish next.

38cm tailor from the river

i got this saturday night around 9pm

38 cm tailor..

it hit hard and almost took my rod in with it i think my drag was sticking cause i h ad it loose .

was caught on mullie...from Narrows .

Lost cray

Same area more and more hardening. And moving out from deep dark ledges. Into snare range.

bent st ramp

since the elections ,emailed council but no response in regards to bent st. ramp being silted up,anyone know why the navigation markers have not been mooved since excavation has been { completed }there must be a rational reason surely!and what was the point of doing one without the other ?

LB Dhufish from earlier this year.

I’m back! Thought i’d share something cool for you all...

Dhu

 112cm 22.1kg yesterday morning

Solid dhue

Luke finally took his boat out with his mate ryan. 19.88 kg . 1.060 long. Unfortunately it’s stomach had nothing in it . Spewing iam out of action so is Andy . I had the great privilege of cleaning it apparently, and it was my spot funny. Ryan’s pd and on soft plastic ( yuck). Little Luke almost there

Fun with Redfin

I recently coached my cousin's grandkids in the fine art of lure fishing a swirling farm creek for Redfin Perch. Winter rain in the Bridgetown area meant this little creek was discoloured and I wondered if the lures and spinners I'd selected might not even be visible... . Needn't have worried. Just before dusk we enjoyed repeated hits and had ten Redfin on the bank before dark. Most successful patterns were Mepps, Gibbs, Blue Fox, Vibrax and Tiger Tails, with red hints and rainbow trout colouration the most successful colours.* The most popular lure had a tuft of dark red feathers on the treble. At times, there was a frenzy of hits... and yes, we lost a few lures to snags.

Eighty percent of the fish were very healthy females loaded with eggs.

Did the kids have fun? You bet. The family had known for years that this little creek sheltered Redfin, but these were apparently the first caught. Pretty excited about their adventure, both boys went out first thing the next morning and caught another good-sized reddie.  Late afternoons may produce more fish... .

* Quite a few of these lures had been successful with Rainbows, Dolly Varden, and Cutthroat in Vancouver Island streams and lakes.  Next time I visit Bridgetown I'll try some wet flies with red hints against these voracious predators!~

Another bag out after the storm.

Went out this morning at gentleman's hours with the misses today to check the pots. I was pretty confident of doing well after the storm and we got our 16. 1  of pots had donuts but the bait was demolished I think Mr occy had scared them all out of there.

More crays today

Took advantage of the good weather we have had lately and checked the pots and got another 11 today . Can't believe the good numbers we are getting , been getting quite afew occies too. Crayfi h dumplings and grilled crays in progress added .

First bag out of the season

Got our first bagout this morning been getting plenty.

Dhu Drought Over

Set myself for a couple of days out this weekend and took the family to the whiting patch yesterday and pulled in a bunch of fat sandies. I reckon I caught 13 of the 16 and the kids need to pick their game up .

Left the boat hooked up and set out solo after my fishing mad 9y old pulled out because "we probably won't catch anything". I've been in a dhu drought since last year and have only managed mostly Blackarse and a baldie.

Hit my spot in the 30s and four drifts for not even a bite and I was already accepting defeat but I changed the driftline and pulled up two small dhus and after a few more drifts and the most subtle of bites I sunk the hooks and got that telltale fight and pulled up a nice 60cm model. Next drift I hooked into something a lot more solid and was wishing I had my son with his $15 licence on board but he sliced me off ready for another day.

Big brown

Luke and few mates went to there trout and Redfin spot. A nice 54cm brown. Even thou he is holding forward. Still good fish and picture

Some more crays from the shallows

Got out yesterday after the stormy weather we have had and my first pot had been in a little strife . Still came home with 2 crays . Fixed the pot yesterday and got it back in today and cleaned up in 1 pot got 8 crays.

PB Dhu and plenty of pinks

Havent posted in a while, have had trouble to on the computer with some out of date software, but all up to date now.

Had some great pinky fishing in recent times with some great numbers hitting the deck, even having 25 fish coming aboard in 2 sessions. Average size of about mid 80s and an equal PB of 94cm coming in at 11.6kg.

On the weekend headed out for a sambo jig on a spot that usually holds large numbers of big fish this time of year. Unfortunately was very quiet with only a small patch of fish holding off the lump and not interested in touching any jigs and plastics. I never head out there targeting sambos without grabbing a handful of livies on the way out because believe it or not they can be a tempermental bugger. So off with the plastics and replaced with a live herring pinned through the back on a jighead. We pulled hooks a few times due to the lazy rig, i usually like a snell setup with a large running ball sinker, but finally set the hook into a solid fish. Very average fight, couldnt decide whether it was a dhuie or a small sambo, then up popped this fatty.
New PB of 94cm.

Quick call to fellow member Goodz to see if he was interested in popping in on his way home from work and taking this fish home, as long as he brought the head back the next day for my Dads soup!

We had one more drift and finally picked up what we came for, snaffling quite a large live skippy.

Cheers,

North Mole Pink Snapper

 Good pinkie in the storm

No Boat No Worries

Conditions are dreadful down here but my son is dead keen so I took him for a flick off the Old Dunno ramp rocks with 1m waves breaking across the bay. I wouldn't even attempt to head out to the weed banks at the moment.

He felt a nibble then the bream rod bent over and after a few tense moments with the breaking waves he landed this beauty. Another species off his bucket list.
