Problem with my GPS
Submitted by kdawson on Sun, 2008-08-31 20:09Hi guys I have recently been having a problem with my Lowrance LMS 525c-df GPS/Fishfinder combo. It was working fine up until a couple of weeks ago where for some reason when i would turn it on a warning sign would come up saying "GPS module not responding." I have checked all the wiring between the GPS antenna and the actual unit about 100 times and i can not find any problems with it. Any help with this problem or any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Strap your boat down
Submitted by kaney68 on Sun, 2008-08-31 12:51Heading home from the ramp on Thursday I was involved in a rear ender with another car.
Glad I had the boat tied down, otherwise reacon it could have ended up a car toper !
The boat shifted just over half a meter and took paint off where the straps ran over the hull, but better than having it in the back of the car - and this was after breaking at only about 50 km.h !
No mater how big or small your boat is and how good it rides on the trailer, braking suddenly and coming to an abrupt stop means that boat has to go somewhere over your rollers, and that somewhere will be in a forward direction.
Every time from now on when the boat leaves the driveway, the strap will be on.
cheers,
Paul

Sounder/ Transducer help required
Submitted by Paul N on Sun, 2008-08-31 09:00I have a Lowrance sounder x107cdf sounder .I have no difficulty reading the bottom at any speed up to a depth of about 120mtrs. I went to the derwent a few weeks ago and the sounder lost bottom unless I was drifting and even then it was not holding bottom all the time. According to the srecs it should penetreate to 650mtrs. I know these figures are propably on the optomistic side but would have figured 200mts was well within range.
My question is , Does the angle of the transducer effect depth range? I have it set up level with the bottom of the hull as per instructions but am I better having the leading part higher than the back to angle the beam forward and driving over the return signal. Or anything else you can suggest to try and get better depth penetration. Doesn't even when using 50 khz all i get is a glack screen and says i'm in about 5 mtrs of water when i'm actualy in 200mtrs.
Performance Features from manual says following
Cheers
Paul
• Depth penetration to 2,500 feet (760 m)
• 4,000 watts peak-to-peak power
• Dual frequency 200/50 kHz Skimmer transducer with built-in temp/speed/distance readings
• Includes transom-mount sensor for precise trolling speed/distance log readings
• FlashGraf LCD flasher+sonar graph with COLORLINE
• Adjustable ping speed automatically engages HyperScroll for locating fish targets at higher boat
speeds
• FasTrack vertical flasher bar
• Overlay data
• Standard sonar features - Advanced Signal Processing (ASP), COLORLINE, Advanced Fish Symbol
I.D., FishTrack, multi-zoom options, sonar alarms, backup memory, and more

help with outboard
Submitted by fisherking on Fri, 2008-08-29 17:47Can any of you guys recommend a good outboard mechanic?
I have a Johnson 140hp that has decided not to run. I was out all day Sat & it ran great, never missed a beat. Got home, washed the boat & went to flush the motor & it just wouldn't start.
Have tried new fuel, cleaned the carbys, have got a spark but it just wont go. Timing hasn't slipped so key way is good.
It's a total mystery, any help would be great.
Thanks guys.

High Pressure Water Sprayers?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Fri, 2008-08-29 10:30Gang,
Quite some time ago, I bought one of these units - it was a Bosch Aquatak 115 - not a bottom of the range by any means. It was excellent for cleaning the boat - getting into crevices and for cleaning the non slip deck. We didn't use it that often, but it eventually died - I believe the coil burnt out.
I was told by various parties that, unless you buy a top of the range unit, the coils are pretty rubbish and prone to failure.
I'd be interested in your thoughts and recomendations on a decent low cost unit (if such a thing exists!)?

D Zip on front clear?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Wed, 2008-08-27 09:57Gang
Somewhere down the track, I'm going to be replacing my side and front clears. I 'lost' my front clear some time ago (embarrasing story
) and the port side one ripped.
Having a look at Paul's boat and a couple of others, I've noticed that some have single and double D zip sections. Don't ask me why ('cause I don't know) but I prefer not to look through a front clear when underway - I guess it comes down to absolute clarity (with my anchient failing eyesight LOL).
I think (from memory) it was your boat Paul that had one D zip set up in such a way that it folded down (the curve of the D was at the top - if you know what I mean). Doing it the other requires straps to roll the uzipped section/s out of the way.
Wondering what peoples thoughts were on the pros and cons of front D zips - I guess they also good for air circulation and it means I don't have to take the clears off (unless 'lubricating' the studs etc or other maintenance).
Thoughts folks?

What to buy?
Submitted by Watto069 on Fri, 2008-08-22 21:12Hi all. I'm about to purchase a boat and was wondering which is the best way to go in regards to chart plotters and fish finders. Is a 2 in 1 unit better or am I better off with 2 separate units. I'm looking at something up to $2000. Any recommended models or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ali hull paint
Submitted by feral1975 on Wed, 2008-08-20 21:14
Ok guys and gals , im doing a complete refit on my centre console at the moment and just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what paint material i could use to save the hull under the floor from electolysis and the stray fish hooks that find their way through the sides into the hull . Was thinking about an anti foul or a rubberised paint or would this hold any moisture against the hull or not worry about it , any ideas would be great as im not really clued up on this , cheers feral

Fibreglass Repairs
Submitted by spitfire on Fri, 2008-08-15 21:18Just had some glass work done and was so impressed thought I'd give the guy a plug. He went way beyond the call of duty. Boat was taking on a bit of water that I couldn't trace. Called Frontline Custom Fibreglass. He came to my house to check the boat out then did some repairs to the keel area plus a few other mods. Gave me a garauntee that it would not take on more than 2 litres in 4 hours use. Well after a water test was still taking on water so I called him back. He spent about 4 hours on the water with me trying to sus out the problem, took it back to his factory and after quite a few hours discovered a small crack hidden under a trailer roller. Had to lift the boat with his crane to find it. More hours repairing the crack, now looks like new. After all this more hours adjusting the trailer, the cause of the problem. And for all this...... NO CHARGE.
I've no connection with Frontline, just thought he deserved a bloody big plug for all this. Frontline Custome Fibreglass, Maddington. 0412352291. Thoroughly nice bloke.
Jeff.

Boatshow
Submitted by dpost80 on Tue, 2008-08-12 14:16In the market for a few bit's and pieces... 50-75 hp 4 stroke outboard; Furuno 585 fish finder, transducer, gps/chart plotter, marine radio (maybe even an entire dinghy, lol)... my question is.... is it worthwhile getting all these at the upcoming Boatshow? Do all the suppliers have bargain deals only available at the show? Or is it all a bit of hype and the prices are normal (perhaps even inflated?)...
Opinions would be appreciated.
cheers,

Is YOUR boat compliant?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Tue, 2008-07-15 12:04Just received DPI's Boating Communities newsletter. Thought it worth posting for those that have boats arelooking at getting one - especially new boats.
There's an article titled Registration stickers and numbers.
In the articles, and I quote (extracts):
Annual Registration Sticker
'...where on your boat should you put your annual registration sticker? The answer is on your port side adjacent to the registration number'
Registration Numbers
'It is in the interests of visibility that the location of the registration numbers must be amidships on both sides for power boats. ... The numbers must be 150mm high for a powerboat....and must contrast with the hull colour....

Raymarine a65 comments and dealer?
Submitted by till on Sat, 2008-07-12 08:53Hi,
interested in opinions and dealers for the Raymarine A65? Its a combo gps/chartplotter/fishfinder. Sure I'd also love the C80 with the ability to add in radar and radio, but its overkill for the intended application.

Old Boats
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2008-07-10 15:37Does anyone happen to know if there are places that buy old boats?
We have a 17.6 Ft fibre which would be around 20 years old i spose.
The engine has had it and needs replacing, but the hull seems to be in perfect condition. The rest of the boat ie: canopy, interior seats etc have withered away over time, and would need restoration.
Just wondering if anyone knows of places that take these types of boats and does them up or something??
