Submitted by tommytomato on Thu, 2009-02-19 12:37Got an older boat pride model, 71 to 72 Evinrude, she's been a good old girl, start her up every weekend with no probs, was planning on heading out tommorow but it doesn't look like its going to happen now.
Did my weekly checks and I found the steering is stuck hard I cant seem to free it up
Any one got any idea's on how to free the steering up
its the grey cable, any idea on what its worth to replace ? can it be done by my self ?
I dont know what type it is but here a couple of links to view what its like

Battery Recommendations
Submitted by alfred on Mon, 2009-02-16 10:09One of my Odyssey batteries died on me, much to my surprise, so looking for a replacement. Need at least 800CCA and would prefer maintenance free, so I don 't have to top up the battery water. What do you folks recommend?

GPS Antenna
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2009-02-15 08:11Just curious if anyone has tried placing their boat GPS antenna in a shoot thru the windscreen position just like a car based GPS.
If so did it pick up the satellites ok or was it a drop in/drop out type of reception?
Just looking to save myself some drilling and cable running.

anti fowling
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2009-02-10 07:40Just wondering if anyone knows of any temp anti fowling products?
couple of people have said to me there is some spray on, and paint on / rub off anti fowling that lasts a couple weeks?
Anyone heard of such things?
Anyone knows what the affects of anti fouling a hull is??
The boat im looking at buying was once anti-fouled (As it was in a pen), but now will be a trailer boat. It has had theanti-fouling removed, and the boat has had the bottom re-done (Not sure how)
It is a fibre glass hull so not sure if there are any after effects from anti fouling? I do know while it has the anti fouling on, it does reduce speed and increases fuel usage.
Any info would be great!!
Cheers

please help, poor radio signal strength?
Submitted by collie on Sun, 2009-02-08 11:07hey guys.
i have a 27meg (GME GX294 i think) radio and when i leave shore i can log on fine with sea rescue but when im out deep i dont get a strong enough signal to be in touch with them cause im a long way out. obviously this is a big problem and im not going offshore until its fixed. i can however hear other boast talking to sea rescue, i assume they are closer to me which is why i can hear them. could this be a result of me having weak battery power?? becuase i know my betteries are not very good or do you guys think it might be another problem. i have only had the boat 6 months and didnt have problems before butthen again wasnt going out so far so its hard to tell.
thanks alot.

Furuno 585 Screen Replacement
Submitted by Humdinger on Sat, 2009-02-07 21:36Hi,
I've just got a new boat and have transferred my trusty Furuno 585 accross from my old tub. The screen is a bit scratched up, so was wondering if anybody had replaced a screen on the Furunos before and if so what did it cost?
Looks a bit sad sitting next to a brand new 12" Multifunction display.

Removing Steering Wheel
Submitted by boofo on Thu, 2009-02-05 10:01Any advice on this?
The steering wheel on my Southwind is about to give up the ghost. The wheel is cracking around the screws that secure the wheel to the hub. One spoke is effectively detached - two to go - so I had better get on and replace the wheel. Images of the wheel falling off out at sea are a bit spooky. I have to choose between replacing the wheel which is secured by six screws on the hub (and there seem to be a couple of wheels about which 'look' like they are attached the same way), or replace the wheel and hub. But it's getting a bit complicated.
Problem 1: The guy at Whitworths indicated that until about 10 years ago there were two versions of taper for the wheel. If I have got the 'other' taper then I've got buckleys of finding a wheel with hub to match and, just to top things off, if that's the case they also changed the thread on the steering cables so all the steering will have to be replaced. Ouch! The taper on my boat looks about 3/4" but most of the new wheels have two key slots along the taper seat and I dont thnk mine does, looking from the top. Anyone know anything about this?
Problem 2: Pulling the hub. So I am trying to pull the wheel off. It's pretty tight. Lots of tips on the internet about holding the wheel and knocking the spindle with hammers and blocks of 4x2. So far it won't budge. But i am a little tentative whacking the spindle with the hammer i must admit. I've got a 3" toledo puller so Ive cut a bit of 3mm steel to put behind the wheel hub to give it something to grab but the puller arms are about 1mm short! Looks like I'll have to buy a bigger puller and a bottle of penetrene!
Problem 3: If I could just get the wheel off the hub then i might be able to find a wheel with matching mounting holes. Trouble is those screws with tiny 3mm allen key heads just wont budge either (maybe an overnight dose of penetrene again). One option is to destroy the wheel and break it off so I can get some multi grips around the heads and get more leverage and hopefully not snap the screws.
One mate suggested a bit of heat to loosen things up, but with all the plastic about not sure I want to try that.
Any other suggestions would be welcome? Surely someone has had this pleasure before me!

Engine Trim
Submitted by JoRn on Wed, 2009-02-04 21:05hi all,
Before my holiday i took my boat out and the trim switch on the control box was no longer working.
The trim switch is still working on the engine.
Do you think i have to change the whole control box? or is there a simple tilt replacement or change the wiring?
last question - do you guys unplug your battery when the boat is not in use? my dads boat got a simple switch that shuts down the power...is it worthwhile investing in one of these?
whats the worst thing that could happen if i dont unplug it

Epirb Registration
Submitted by big john on Tue, 2009-02-03 17:00Just registered my new 406 MHz epirb online with AMSA.
Very simple, took 5-10 minutes and you get a login for your account which you can then use to update your registration as your details change.
For those who haven't done it yet, the website is:
Surprisingly efficient for a government department.

Epirb news
Submitted by fishy fingers on Tue, 2009-01-27 19:46I just got my new epirb (jumped the que a bit) but just to let you all know GME have just announced today that their battery replacement policy is as follows. if you take in your old one in six years they will take it off you, deregister it, give you a brand new one and register it for you and you will pay the princely sum of $200.00. this is retrospective so if you bought one 5 years ago in twelve months you will get a new one for $200.

At the moment i have my sounder and gps mounted on the top of the console and it's starting to get abit wheathered from all the sea spray so am looking for something to protect it.

New Gps help anyone?
Submitted by westline on Thu, 2009-01-08 22:41Gday Guys and Gals, My names Dave and Im new to this great site and i was wondering if anybody could help me with the choice of gps for my new/first boat. Ive always been a mad keen fisho and worked on the water off the wa coast most of my semi adult haha life but have only just bought a decent rig apart from a tinnie or 2 for myself a 5.5 mtre plate ally westlne. Ive been looking at the Lowrance globalmap 5200c (external antenna) or the Hummingbird 785c2x (external antenna) or maybe the Garmin gpsmap 550 (internal antenna).. or can anybody suggest a similar mid price range model?
Has anybody got one of these gps units or know someone who does and are the external antenna miles above the internal antennae? Ive already got a sounder so just after a single colour gps unit which can take map cards,
Any help whatsoever would b greatly appreciated and i look forward to contributing to this very imformative and fun site fishwrecked, Thankyou in advance..

To which he " no problems at all". What does everyone think of these?
