GPS Help!!
Submitted by Wojo on Fri, 2009-07-03 08:49OK guys I need your help.
I have a Lowrance LCX-27c fish finder & mapping GPS on a bass boat I puchased last week. The seller was a good guy and took very good care of everything. The day I bought the boat we tested the GPS and got the "GPS module not responding" notice. The sonar works great and I could see the trails and way points on the screen showing that the GPS was working before. We checked everything but could not figure it out. I bought the boat anyways and took it home. A friend has the LCX-28c and we tested my cables and receiver on his and it worked fine.
It appears that the unit it not communticating with the receiver or not sending it power when connected in my boat. all the fuses are good, power is coming out of the unit, cables and receiver work on friend's unit, what could it be?? I have a Humingbird 947c unit on the bow and it works great. I NEED HELP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tom

New user! Chasing info on Chivers Pursuit
Submitted by Jake@Dunsborough on Mon, 2009-06-29 22:50Hi All,
I'm originally from over East and I'm looking for a WA built boat. I've got my eye on a Chivers Pursuit.
I would really like any information anyone can give me about them.
1. Are they a competent off shore boat? ( I know they're only 17ft)
2. Any problems I should look out for?

Winter Special - Half Price
Submitted by Men On Boats on Sun, 2009-06-28 21:28With every full motor service we are offering half price bearing replacement or led light conversions, or both, on you trailer.
We also do refirbishment of trailers such as springs, axles, rollers, skids and brake overhauls.
As we all know the trailers probably causes more problems than the boat so keeping them operational means more time on the water rather than high and dry.
During winter is usually quiter than summer as you would expect, but we are seeing a pretty constant stream of clients, new and old, coming through with minor to major overhauls, additions and modifications, and a word of caution with less boat yards around, don't leave it to the last minute to get the boat serviced, ready for next summer. The good service yards will be busier and harder to get into.

Furuno FCV 585 Heads Up
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2009-06-21 18:39Just giving the sounder a wipe down with some fresh water after a bit of spray hit it this weekend.
I noticed that two of the four screws attaching the back of the unit to the front had vibrated loose. Thankfully I dont over wet the unit so I'm hoping no moisture has got in the back. Touch wood!
Might be a good idea to check yours if you have the 585 or its little brother.

Sounder advice
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2009-06-15 10:15Hi guys
Im in the market for a new sounder for the boat.
Have been looking around at many many different makes and models.
Currently i have a Navman 4500 sounder, matched with a Navman 5600 tracker.

The GPS itself, ive been looking for new charts for (Ryan charts not maps :) ) Ive since found out that Navman or Northstar now, use c-maps, which released a new chip with new maps a couple of years ago. The chip in my gps is an older type and have since been updated. Now the updated charts apparently dont have much more detail than the older ones (i did look at both on a gps at the shop).
So in a nutshell, i can either buy the older charts for WA, or buy a new GPS and get the new charts. Have to take into consideration the size cutouts in the dash on the boat.
For sounder:
Been looking at the Furuno 585's and the 295's with the 1kw tranny, which seem quite reasonable, and from the reports ive got from people who use them, are very reliable, and clear.
Since then, i have had a look at the Lowrance Sounder / GPS units. In particular this one.\
HDS-10 Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter
The finest of new Lowrance fishfinding and GPS navigation technologies with massive, high-definition 10.4”/26.4 cm Super VGA color viewing. The new SolarMAX™ PLUS display renders brilliant detail in sunlight with the best wide-angle viewing ever available, while advanced pure-white LED screen/keypad backlighting fully adjusts to zero-dim for night fishing. The unique new FlyWheel™ dial and command soft keys give you easier and quicker control of Broadband Sounder fishfinding and satellite navigation precision via the built-in 16-channel GPS+WAAS antenna.
HDS built-in cartography choices include Enhanced U.S. Basemap, or the amazing, life-like and new Insight USA™ with combined Inland and Coastal coverage (Americas) - Or Navionics World Background map (non-Americas). Plus, this HDS is now fully compatible with all Navionics® chartcards* – Platinum+, Platinum, Platinum HotMaps – with two high-speed SD card slots. Fully ready to build your complete stand-alone or networked onboard system.
Specs:
Now heopfully some people on here might be able to shed a little light onto this for me.
The advantages Ive noticed to something like the HDS-10 is
1. Uses Navionics charts (way more detail than c-maps)
2. The guy at the shop who showed me the unit explained the Sounder to me. It only requires a 600w Tranny due to it having an in-corporated Broadband unit and the response time to the bottom and back is 8 times quicker than a normal sounder. He did state there would be no issues seeing in great detail any bottom info out to atleast 1000m (anyone used one??)
3. Can be upgraded to do 3d imaging of the bottom (not sure if id ever use that).
Does anyone have a Broadband unit on their boat?? how does it rate?
Does anyone know what or if any other brands use navionics charts other than lowrance and humminbird?
Any suggestions / ideas would be appreciated!!
hds-10 is about 4k installed with platinum charts.
Cheers

Free Outboard
Submitted by 7739ian on Fri, 2009-06-12 13:17If anyone is interested in a free 40hp Evinrude outboard PM me. I was just talking to my brother and he was about to take his old 70's outboard down to the tip. It was running OK about 12 or 18 months ago but has not been started since then. A fin is broken on the lower unit otherwise it's all there. He is blowing some money on a new 50 Etec and dumping this as he is a lazy bugger who never services anything. Located in Muchea.

Advice on the Trophy range??
Submitted by PACEMAKER on Mon, 2009-06-08 20:50I am looking at buying a 2003 Trophy, model 2352. Has anyone got any info or does anyone have a trophy they can share their thoughts/ experiences on. Its running an injected 350 Chev with 250 hp and has the Mercruiser leg. It has done approx 150 hours. Holds 400Ltrs of petrol and comes with all safety equipment, lowrance sounder etc. It has 2 kill tanks, 1 live bait well and even has a built in toilet. Is there anything I should be looking for when buying this boat. I have been given a price by the owner and am of the belief it is a rather good price. The hull and the whole boat for that matter has been very well looked after and it can be seen just on first glimpses. The mechanics have been well serviced and the trailer is clean as a whistle. It has a drive on trailer and electric brakes. Oh and it has all side and rear clears and comes with full boat cover. Thanks in advance.

GPS File formats
Submitted by Archie on Fri, 2009-06-05 19:46Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone out there can help with a GPS file issue. Lowrance have a neat program on their site to convert Universal GPS file formats (GPX) to their own format (URS). I've been able to grab a heap of waypoints froma friend's Garmin Unit and load them onto my Lowrance. I'd like to repay the favour but I can't find a program that converts URS back to the universal GPX format. Sounds confusing but if you've dealt with converting GPS formats, you'll know what I mean.
Any help would be appreciated (as would any coordinates with monster Dhu's on them LOL)

Compulsory VHF radios?
Submitted by Tim on Thu, 2009-06-04 22:27Has anyone heard anything about VHF radios and therefore VHF licenses becoming compulsory later this year for boats?
Had our club meeting last night and one of the guys was saying he had his boat in for repairs and it needed a new 27 meg aerial. The guy at the boat yard told him why bother wasting your money replacing with 27 meg when you will only have to change it later in the year anyway.
He is going back to try find out more info and we will call DPI as well but thought Id ask anyway.

New deck install in the tub
Submitted by PACEMAKER on Tue, 2009-05-26 23:31I decided it was time to replace the main deck in the boat after I noticed the port side passengers were bobbing up and down when the boat slapped onto the ocean. I knew it was going to need doing when I purchased it but was having to much fun fishing to worry about it. Now that weve had some crap weather Im glad I got stuck into it. A mate and I ripped into it and we were amazed to the poor workmanship underneath and now no why it had cracked. When the previous owners had the boat they had the new Merc fitted up only to have an issue with the boat getting out of the hole in a decent time frame. They took the boat back to the people that they had purchased it from. The builders proceeded to cut a great big F*&%ing chunk of deck out and inspect the flotation foam for water injestion. They thought that if the foam was water logged that it may be adding extra weight. After the foam proved to be ok they then realised that they had installed the wrong prop size. It was then the dodgy workmanship came into it. So anyway things aside the damage was done and here I am now fixing it the proper way. The original beams were only 100mm wide X 15mm thick and they had used some sought of pine. After some measuring and a bit of pre-thought and a few sherberts with the mates we came up with a game plan.
If we are going to do this lets make the most out of the under deck space and build in not one but two below deck eskies. With the way the supports are we were able to have a split esky each side of centre and this would keep the fish separate from the food.Total volume is around 160L. We decided to beef up the support beams 200mm X 30mm thick with the marine grade board and nestle a 10mm deck on top all coated in fibreglass. While Im at it I have added another sheet of glass to the inside of the hull. The eskies will be lined with insulation and the lids will be a hingeless setup so that there is easy access from all sides. Here is the progress so far.

Broken engine - any suggestions?
Submitted by boofo on Sun, 2009-05-24 13:23Threw a con rod on Monday at Bussleton. Thanks to sea rescue Quindalup I managed to get the boat back to Perth and now its sitting at Hillary's to be repaired.
It is (was) a 200HP Yamaha 2Stroke powering my Southwind 650 - all about ten years old. It had done less than 450 hours (unlucky I guess) Now I need to work out the best way to get it fixed. Curremtly it's sitting at Just Marine and Ernie is fishing around to see if there are any second hand engines around that might be canabalised for block and head. I think the rod has damaged both as it exited the engine.
Anyway choices seem to be -
repower with a new fourstroke - expensive maybe $20K - seems excessive on an older boat
try and find a second hand recon unit preferabbly the same so the instruments dont need to be replaced. I noticed a mob in Sydney list a recon unit for about $4K, so if it is a near equivelant that might be an easier option
strip the engine, get the head and block repaired, and rebuild - I guess that would meen new pistons, maybe new valves etc, and what about 25 hours? sounds like it will be close to $4K as well but I'm only guessing.
Any advice/suggestions. Any good places to look for parts/engines?

Theft From Boats
Submitted by Paul Jackson on Mon, 2009-05-18 22:10Theft from boats seems to be on the rise.
Mate of mine found that his boat had been disturbed outside his house at the weekend, but nothing appeared to be missing...
Eventually discovered that his flares had gone - this sort of thing could potentially be life threatening........
Wondering what others have done to secure their boats? My boat has an alarm fitted - and most things are removed or secured to boat.

Navman 4500
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2009-05-18 11:29Just curious if anyone knows if you can fit a bigger transducer to this unit? Or does anyone have a bigger transducer on this unit?
Currently got a 600 on it but unsure if it can handle a 1kw?
Would it be worth it? or would a better option be to upgrade to sometime like a Furuno 585 with a 1kw transducer?
Cheers Fellas

Broome Boat Ramps
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2009-04-30 22:48About time the population know that for the visiting fisho Broome suxs as a place to take your boat. There is no ramps and the beach launching for the Broome novice can be and has been a challenge. The local member Carol Martin says that the people in Broome should be happy that they have so many places to launch a boat. I will tell you that it will cause a melt down in Family relations, a shit of a days fishing, and then a remeltdown on return. Tourist town yes, for us fishing folk, forget it unless you are local and have all the gear.
Neels
sorry but I am angry after towing the boat from Karratchi City to Broome and finding shit facilities

Fuel Consumption
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2009-04-16 15:31Hi All
Curious to know what people are getting for Economy on different boats and engines.
i have a 3.5 tonne 26 foot Fibre Centre console
Twin 140hp Bombardier Johnson 4stks.
Currently running at about 2-2.25 ltrs per Nuatical mile.
I thought this seemed quite high??
Just had a mechanic come look at my engines for another issue, and he said he had just fitted a 300hp Suziki 4stk to a 3.5 tonna glass boat, and at cruising speed its using 1lt per 1.1 nautical miles!!! bloody good!
Whats everyone elses economy like?

Mercury 150 Efi Alarms
Submitted by Jack on Thu, 2009-04-16 14:19Afternoon everyone/anyone!! I have a Mercury 150 Efi(2 stroke) and on the last trip off Onslow, I had 2 alarms going off. The first was 4 beeps every few minutes. The second was a constant beep and the only way to get it off was to turn the engine off and restart. The boat would cavitate at about 3100 rpm and then the alarm would start. I have been told it is an overheating alarm and the four beeps is a water sensor alarm.... Could anyone confirm this info before i rip the leg off and do the impella or give me me info on what i would have to do.
