18lb electric motor amp usage

Hi,

I have a query in regards to an 18 lb electric motor. Some sites on google say it uses 15 amp per hour others say 17 and some even say 7 amps per hour. Just wondering from your understading how many amp will a 18lb motor per hour.

I am currently using two jump starters 900 amp and 600 amps to run this motor. Just wondering how much run time i would get out of them before i need to worry and paddle back to shore.

Also isit okay to have two jump starters in the same box. Will it explode! Only one jump starter will be used at any give one time.  I ain't very good with electrics as you can see, so any help will be very much appreciated.

Cheers if you can assist.

Polarised Prescription Sunnies

 Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone can suggest a few brands that actually does prescrition sunnies ? I currently own a pair of Spotters, a bit thick on the lens and it kinda popped out of the frame now and I am sunny-less. Wrote back to SPotters to ask if it can be repaired but never get an answer.

So I am considering exploring a different brand. Any suggestions there ?

Can wear contact lens and have to stick with prescription sunnies....: (

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers

New Fishing Destination

Hey Guys

Just wondering if any one can give me some advise.  I go on a yearly fishing trip with a bunch of mates from Perth and we usualy head down to Albany around Febuary but after 4 years of the same spot we are all thinking somewhere new might be on the cards.  The only restrictions we have is how far we drive cause we are pulling a 22ft Savage so more drving = less fishing and we only have 5 days.  I was looking at Kalbarri but have no idea on the fishing or anything about the place.  So i guess what im asking is it worth the extra driving and will it be easy enough to get on some fish without having been there before ?

Cheers,

Chris

SBS Cutting Edge

8.30 tonight their looks to be an interesting program regarding some of the hypocrisy involved with the greenies/conservation movements. Should be worth watching.

LCD Monitor

Anyone have an old spare one sitting in the storeroom. Need one but don't want to buy a new one as I will be upgrading in the near future. Happy to swap for a couple of pizzas!

Anyone work with Carpet?

Gday all just wondering if anyone works with Carpet in houses, or knows of someone decent that does? Just had Hemi do some tiling for me in my new kitchen(bloody brilliant so far, just grouting to go!) and need someone to come and finish the edges where the carpet and tiles meet. Would rather give my business to another FW member than going to a random carpet place.

Thanks, Buz.

Furuno service next to none

Had some dramas the other morning with the furuno sounder gps. Got six mile out and sounder wouldn't work so I gave Rhys a call from tailor marine. Over the next few hours and six phone calls  from Rhys the problem was solved. Now I didn't buy this sounder through Tailor marine but got it second hand off family, but  there was no questions asked. He went out of his way, [as Im sure he is very busy] and talked me through a few things with the sounder.

Now in my mind buying local and paying the bit extra is well worth it. With back up, friendly service, I was back out fishing that arvo and sounder was working at its best.

I had a lowrance before the furuno and got it from the states. When it stopped working I was told by our local dealer they would not look at it and to send it back to the states. So for all you guys trying to save the pennies and getting stuff from the states or cheap web sites, there is no one to get you back on the water if things stop working. THANKS Rhys awesome service mate..

Random profile pic???

I was on here last night and my profile pic was a pic of a baldy next to a corona stubby, i woke up this morning and it was a pic my mate had editted of a midget in diaper holding a bottle and a cigar with my face pasted on it. How did this happen?? I wasn't that hammered  to put it up and unless someone has access to my account/laptop i dont see how it got up there? No one else was in the house either. Complete mystery!

Tritons and Rangers

Hey Guys,

Just want to hear some reviews on people out there that own or drive Tritons and Rangers on a regular basis. Im in the market for something alike and i can't afford a Hilux for the ages and kilometres im looking at. Heres some specs on what im after:

- Dual Cab

- Turbo Diesel

- 2007-2010 models

- Low Km's

- 5sp Manual

- $25-$28k maximum budget

- Preferable fruited out somewhat (Bullbar, rollbar, sidesteps, spotties etc etc)

Be interesting to here about experience and recommendations on what dealerships you've liked to deal with? Will also look at privately owned vechiles aswell, but the dealership warranties seem to be quite irresistable.

Thanks in advance

Cheers,

Sam

Are Boga Grips worth the $$$$ ?

I'm looking at getting a pair of the Boga Grips, and have seen a fair few other similar type items on the market.

Are the original Boga's worth the extra $$ spent??

There's a range of types I've seen, from cheapies at circa $30 that I'll steer clear of, but have also seen a s/steel look-a-like that is circa $150. This being still a fair wack cheaper than the 60lb Boga's that I've seen online.

Whats your opinions?

Xtreme Gnaraloo Fishing

Hi all

After a lot of organising and anticipation the annual trip North to Gnaraloo station finally became a reality. The party of 4 consisted of Dave S (Shark man), Sabby (The Italian, Andrew (MacGyver) and myself Dave A. We set out for Gnaraloo station on the 8th of July 2011 for 6 days of brilliant fishing, funny stories and a great time with my buddies. This was for some of us our 7th trip to Gnaraloo and after this year, i feel we are starting to finally get it right. The track in was not too bad as the weather was dry, although, you could see the damage caused from the traffic during the wet weather a few weeks earlier. We arrived at the station at 2pm after a night stop over in Geraldton.

After a quick unpack we were off to the bay to launch for a few hours fishing to start our week. We headed North for about 4nm and stayed close to the shore in 10 to 20mtrs of water. While trolling we spotted some good ground and decided to send a few lines down. We called this spot arches as that is exactly what the scanner was showing. Anchored in 20mtrs with a one mtr swell was great, having the rods bent over was even better. For the next hour or so, we had a lot of fun catching many Spangled Emperor (Nor Westers) as the boys from Caranarvon would call them. Don't think you have to got far of deep at Gnaraloo. On this spot we caught Spangles, Rock Cod, Coronation trout, Rankin, Robinson Sea Bream, pearch, Cobia, baldies and a number of unstoppables. It was an awsome find.

Our first full day (target species: spangles) was Saturday and the forecast was for a few showers. It actually did not stop raining all day. Even with our newly made clears, we were saturated by days end. The wind played the game and the fishing was very good. We started the day with a few hours of trolling the back of the reef to see if we could raise a Spanish Mackerel. To our surprise the water temp was only 19 degree and with only the Sharkies hiting our lures, we decided to head out a bit. We like to fish the 35 - 45 mtr marks and anchor when we can. we soon hit the Spangles again and had no trouble getting our quota of these energetic fish. We also had some fun on small trevally to 3kg that kept hitting the jet lures. Day One, a bag full of Spangles, trevally, sharkies, a few small rankin and some nice mack tuna for bait.

The sun came out the next day (target species: Spanish Mackerel) and we decided to head out to a few spots we have in 50mtrs. Plenty of fish on the scanner both on the bottom and half way up. We were drifting over our spots this day as we were chasing a few Mackerel. Out went the drifting mulie/gardies on the new stinger rig (brilliant set up), didn't have to wait long and ZZZZZZZZZZ Sab was on and loving it. Mack was the call and not too long after a nice 10.9kg Spanish was resting nicely in the Mack box. Little did we know, that this was going to be the smallest one we caught for the week. We would literally drift over our spot, look at the scanner to see the arches half way up, through out the mulie and bang. It doesn't get any better than that. We spent a few hours catching our fair share of Macks keeping two for the freezer to then head back in to try for a few Rankin to finish the day. We always troll the high speed jets where ever we go. Pink and white is our favourite colour in small and larg sizes. I always stick to 10kts and find this to be the most effective speed. On our way in, we picked up some nice yellow fin to 12kg and found some Rankin to top off a great day in the sun at Gnaraloo. After day two and a half, the freezer was looking very good already.

Our confidence was really good for day three and the weather was great. We all know what Gnaraloo can do to a fisherman so we were not counting our chickens. Day 3 and it was time to target the Reds. Back out to 50plus and there was plenty on the scanner. The fish were not that hungry and it was a bit quiet while we were waiting for the tide to do its bit. We had one good our when all the Reds for the day where boated. The largest of the 6 was 9kg and the rest around 6 -8kg. (perfect size) Once again, the Sabby (The Italian Stallion) had is mulie drifting over the side. You would think the four the day before would be enough. Sabby loves to through out the floater and sitting back waiting for it to go off. Sure enough zzzzzzzzzz and he was for another Mack. This got to be a bit common, even a bit like a pest really (just joking), they were everywhere, a problem we have never encountered before. After a few solid fish to 15kg, Sab through out another mulie, sat down and you guest it, wack zzzzzz. This time he didn't get up and left the rod sitting in the holder. Dave S grabbed it and was in for a good fight. "Yeah, yeah, another mack Dave" cam from the Italian who was now on camera duties. Then.....up came the biggest mack we had ever seen. Weighed in at 25KG. The day was not done, back to 20mts to bag out on Spangles, Coronation Trout, Rankin, Pearch and Reds. Brilliant.

Day Four saw us head back for some more Reds. We could not find them on this day. Instead, the cobia were out to play hitting our baits on the bottom. Largest was 10plus kg and gave us a real work out. Conditions were magic. We decided to try for some more Yellow fin. they were hanging around in 55mtrs were the water temp was about 22 degrees. Double hookups were the order and again, the back took a good beating. All hooked on the jet lures again. The trolling gear was mostly penn 850 and 950 reels with two shimano TLDs doing a bit of work as well. These reels did a great job all week and for the price, are hard to go past. We have a few larger game reels but don't use them much. The Yellow fin meant sushimi was on the menu and chef Dave S did a great job of preparing the meals all week.

Day five and the weather still remained brilliant. This is a big change for us as we usually get the belting winds to contend with. I was itching to get out to the 100mtr mark to get into the job fish. on a good day you are looking at a one hour trip, not too far. first spot, first drop and we were onto the job fish. Not big ones but in good numbers. we also picked up some really nice pan snapper, pink snapper, pearl pearch, spangles and some brillinat Red Emperor. After a few hours we had had enough of the deeper water and headed in to 20mtrs for some more fun in the shallows. Anchored this time to finish with some more Cobia, coronation trout, rock cod and numerous spangled emperor. We were exhausted. We had caught everything we came, the species list was long and impressive. The freezer was full and we still had one day to go. there was only one thing to do. Get after a few sails.

Day six, the water temp was still 20 degrees and we had not seen a sail fish all week. The wind and swell had come up which made it a bit uncomfortable. Out to the 60mtre mark and out went the pushers. There was a few richters and a couple of Pacula? poppers in the spread. It wasn't long until we had our first double hook up. Two very energetic young Spanish mackerel decided the spread looked good. Both returned to swim again. The spread was sent back in the water, again it wasn't long and this time the noise was a lot louder ZZZZZZ two of the spread were hit to have one drop which left Sab struggling with the weight. No call of Sail but the tell tail sign of the yellow fin as it headed deep for a long time. After a good fight another good sized YFT was boated to be released. We decided to head in again to 20mtrs for the last two hours of our trip and have some fun in the shallows once again. all fish released on this day. It's a good feeling.

We had the best trip to Gnaraloo in 2011. Every decision we made worked well. We targeted species with great results, now the only challebge was to get out of there. After a lot of rain, the track out, was now like a swimming pool. It took plenty of tight manouvers, treading water and time to get out. We did make it unscathed, thankfully.

2012 is already booked. If you would like any information about where to fish at Gnaraloo or what it is like up there, feel free to PM me and i am only happy to give you a few places to go. It is my favourite bay and spot to go fishing with my mates. Thanks boys.

Hope you enjoy a few of the pics.

OOPS, think pics are too big.

Issues with uploading photos

Hi All

I am trying to upload some pictures but it just wont work. I have tried to follow the steps stated in the 'how to attach images' etc threads, but no luck. This is the error msg that always comes up even after resizing the pics to 500kb 'Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 83886080 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 5120 bytes) in /home/fishwrec/public_html/includes/image.gd.inc on line 95'

Anyone with any ideas or help?

LEE lead melter

Hi Guys

Any of you purchased a Lee Lead melter????,they seem to be the only brand available.

I have been making sinkers, wanting a better way of melting the lead.

I have already cleaned up 2 bucket fulls of wheel wheights into ingots, not a pleasant task.Have made some sinkers, not that a pleasant task either.

My moulds are Do It Jig head and Do it Bass sinkers, plus a star mould and small and medium snapper moulds.I did pre-heat moulds, consistant lead temp was my main issue,I use an outside open fire pit.

The larger Lee Melters seem reasonable value on EBay,I know there are seperate USA 110V types and 220V types. Interested in the Pro 4-20.

A question for those that have them, are they as good and simple to operate as they seem???

The 4" clearance will be an issue for my larger snapper moulds.Does the base plate simply unscrew from the back board???? I would like to space it out to get 6" clearance.Same for the 2 support rods.

All advice appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

Record tiger shark

I guess most of you have seen the record Tiger shark caught in the Sunday Times today. Yep great catch and all, I'm just wondring where the the shark itself is going to end up? If it's the tip then why land it in the first place????? cause I'm sure a shark that size is no good to eat? I thought the days of catching trophy fish were over?

Just got back from Europe...

Just got back from three weeks in Europe and had an absolute ball.  It's amazing going through places and seeing everything from gravestones to villages that are older than Australia (English occupied Australia at least anyway).

We went to London for a week and then a couple of days in each of Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris.  It's pretty difficult to identify which was the best place because each are significantly different to each other and each need to be judged on their own merits.  Anyway rather than summarise the trip here are a few pics of some of the key places we visited... there were plenty of other cool moments but these are the 'eyes' of the trip.

I also got out for a fish in Amsterdam, check the Brag Board for a few shots of how it went.

SINGAPORE

Had a five hour stop over in Singapore so went and checked out the Marina Bay area, how's this pool on the 54th floor (I think) of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel

LONDON

Shakespeare's theatre in Stratford on Avon

600 year old church in Upper Slaughter (rad name for a village!)

Classic old thatched roof cottage in Chipping Campden

Croft Castle over near the Wales border

Big Ben and part of the houses of Parliament

Royal Albert Hotel - we went and watched one of the BBC Proms performances, hell of a venue with awesome accoustics and just a seriously good looking venue

London Eye and the Thames

BERLIN

Brandenburg Gate

Some of the cool architecture along the River Spree

Some of the older architecture along the River Spree

One of the cooler things at the Pergamon Museum - this is the Market Gate of Miletus from the First Century AD

Checkpoint Charlie

Some of the Berlin Wall which has been moved to a memorial at a different location, I love this shot as it gives a good feel for what it must have been like back in the day... I waited five minutes for the bike rider to come along!

Some of the Berlin Wall in its original location - the grassy bit behind shows the death strip people had to cover if they wanted to make it to freedom... the River Spree is there too as an added 'hassle'

AMSTERDAM

Train to Amsterdam from Berlin

Standard street in Amsterdam

Amsterdam = Canal Central

Amsterdam = Bike Central (one of many 'bike parks')

Rembrant's house

Didn't have the time to get there but it would have been great...

PARIS

Eiffel Tower - loved this, it is a seriously massive structure and it looks awesome

The most impressive structure in Paris for me was the Arc de Triomphe

Inside the arches of the Arc de Triomphe

Outisde Notre Dame Cathedral

Inside the Notre Dame Cathedral

The Tower at night

Sacre Couer at night - pretty cool looking church

The Grande Arche in La Defence, the business district of Paris

anyone for a nz fishing job??

  • Horror conditions on "slave ships" - report
  • "Workers abused, denied medical treatment"
  • Appalling conditions just like a slum - official

INDONESIAN seafarers are being beaten, raped and forced to eat rotten food in slum-like conditions aboard Korean-owned fishing boats, according to a New Zealand study.

New university research compiled from interviews with dozens of fishermen has exposed disturbing levels of inhumane treatment on foreign fishing vessels operating in New Zealand's exclusive economic zone.

The conditions suffered by 2000 mainly Indonesian men on 27 vessels were judged "appalling", with gruesome accounts of extreme physical violence and verbal abuse.

"Officers are vicious bastards ... factory manager just rapped this 12kg stainless steel pan over his head, splits the top of his head, blood pissing out everywhere...," one informant told the University of Auckland.

"I told the Master can't leave him cause he's bleeding all over the squid. He said 'Oh no no, he's Indonesian, no touchy no touchy'... Took him to the bridge and third mate said 'Indonesian, no stitchy no stitchy'. I ended up giving over 26 stitches ... bit of a mess."

Muslim workers were frequently called dogs, monkeys and other derogatory names.

Others were sexually abused, one describing being forced to "massage" the captain every day.

Another said: "Galley boy, good looking boy on a Korean boat was raped by four Chinese crew who got him...."

They drank brown water, ate rotten fish bait and were denied medical treatment when sick or injured.

A fisherman described his experience as being "trapped into modern slavery", while another said they lived "like rats".

A New Zealand official quoted in the study called the boats "a floating freezer ... absolutely appalling conditions just like a slum ... there are definitely human rights abuses out there, they are slave ships".

Many of the interviewees were survivors from the 30-year-old Oyang 70, which sank off New Zealand's South Island last year, killing six men.

The replacement crew and crew from another boat, the 30-year-old Shin Ji, have also contributed after marching off the job objecting to poor conditions and wages.

The Korean company at the centre of the allegations, Sajo Oyang Corporation, has denied claims of widespread abuse. In a statement, it said it had not been asked to offer evidence and claimed the researchers were known to be against foreign fishing.

The study, entitled "Not in New Zealand's waters, surely?", showed the men's annual incomes were just a tenth of what crew on New Zealand boats received. Many did not get one day off in two years, and worked an average of 16 hours a day.

However, falsified time sheets showed shorter days and regular breaks.

Paperwork obtained by the researchers show New Zealand officials were routinely and systematically lied to over wages and conditions.

The revelations have shocked New Zealanders and sparked a ministerial investigation into the operations.

The crew of both boats remain on New Zealand shores fighting for lost wages.

Immigration officials had planned to deport them but this is unlikely to go ahead amid fears the company may never pay the men and may seek retribution upon return to their homeland.

"Deporting the men now would be unjust and also prevent all the relevant evidence being available to the ministerial inquiry into the conditions on foreign charter fishing boats in New Zealand waters," Green Party MP Keith Locke said.
