Rod Building
Submitted by jay_burgess on Sun, 2006-08-27 18:01If anyone here is into rod building I'd like to ask a few questions.
Firstly, what are the benefits of building your own rod?
How difficult is it, how much time does it take?
Where can you buy the equipment, blanks, binding etc.. to build your own rod?
Is it cheaper than pre-made rods of the same calibre?
Thanks for any help.

Submitted by big john on Wed, 2006-08-16 21:45Just watched the fortieth anniversary documentary 'The battle for Long Tan' on Fox's History channel.
Absolutely awesome story, courage, she'll be right attitude etc. Sent a tingle down my spine how they found two blokes alive the next morning.
Do yourself a favour and get your hands on a copy.

Chuck Norris Jokes!
Submitted by Fly on Sun, 2006-07-30 02:32I stumbled across a heap of Chuck norris Jokes I thought i'd share a few and see if anyone has any new ones!
Chuck Norris won a lawsuit against NBC for copywrite infringements. Apparently Law and Order are the names for his left and right leg
Chuck Norris clogs the toilet when he takes a pi$$.
Chuck Norris, Vin Diesel and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all died and are in Heaven. Each of them hope to occupy the seat next to God. God asks Vin Diesel why he thinks he should have the seat and Vin replies, "I believe... I should have the seat because of the virtuosity in my toughness and pride." Arnie says, "I believe... that I should be the one sitting next to you because of all my achievements." God then turns to Chuck Norris, who replies with, "I believe... you are sitting in my seat."
Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding.
There is no such thing as global warming. Chuck Norris was cold, so he turned the sun up.
Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
Before the boogey man goes to bed he checks his closet for Chuck Norris
when Chuck Norris gets drunk he does not throw up he throws down!
Guns don't kill people - Chuck Norriss does!
When an episode of Walker Texas Ranger was aired in France, the French surrendered to Chuck Norris just to be on the safe side.
so come on - some a you guys must have a few Chuck Norriss jokes!
Cheers!

Crocks down south?
Submitted by Fly on Thu, 2006-07-13 20:03Crocks down south?
Here's a subject for discussion...
In recent years persistent rumors keep appearing about saltwater crocks reappearing in some of the Pilbara creeks rivers where they were last shot out back in the late 50's and early 60's according to the locals!
We know saltwater crocks were in the Pilbara waters that far back, and I guess with them not now being hunted in the Kimberley they are breeding up to the point where - they will eventually spread south and re-populate area's like the Pilbara where they once thrived...
So - the question that bugs me - is this!
If the warm water currents etc are headed south with global warming, and we have been seeing things like Mud crabs down in Augusta, and Bunbury etc...and Spanish Mackerel in Flinders bay at Augusta, Giant (wolf) Herring at Augusta and even Walpole...etc...
Is there any fear that crocks might find their way south like these other tropical species and if so - should we be keeping an eye out for when they do eventually inevitably arrive?
I mean we have mangroves now as far south as places like Shark Bay, The Abrolhos and even near the Parade Hotel in Bunbury!
So is there any physical reason why there CAN'T be crocks down south?
Discuss!

4WD Insurance
Submitted by poida on Fri, 2006-06-30 16:38Just contacted the RAC, whom I have had my cars insured by for the last 10 years, to find out if my 4WD is insured whilst off road. I have had 2 minorly hairy moments in it off road and wanted to make sure I was covered. I was surprised to find out that I was not covered at all, and after ringing a few other companies found them to be a bit dearer, but the cover included off road. I will have to change my insurance before the next off road trip. I was quite surprised and reckon that I am as likely to have an off road accident as i am to have an on the road accident, and will get better insurance value from else where.

Who paid the Ref!
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2006-06-27 00:53WHAT A LOAD OF #$%#%$. HE FELL OVER HIS OWN SHOELACES!!! The umpiring in this world cup has been atrocious, disappointing outcome but still a brilliant effort by the Aussies. The Italians certainly looked more dangerous when they went foward, but spent most of the game defending. Oh well, congratulations to the Socceroo's for making us proud and putting us on the map in regards to the World Game.
The way Brazil played against Japan the other day is an ominous sign of whats to come. Brazil World Cup Champs 06, IMO.

Croc sighted in Ashburton River
Submitted by jay_burgess on Mon, 2006-06-19 20:08Thursday, 1 June 2006. 07:21 (AWST)
Tourists have spotted a saltwater crocodile in the Ashburton River at Onslow.
Authorities believe it is the same 3.5 metre reptile that has been seen several times in the past year.
Local police say as soon as the flooded roads reopen they will drive to the river and try to check for themselves.
The Shire of Ashburton's manager of western operations, Amanda O'Halloran, says there are signs in the area warning people to watch out for the local croc.
Ms O'Halloran says most people know the basic precautions.
"You need to be very aware that swimming and those sorts of things probably aren't considered to be completely safe, but I think the best thing to do is to just try and stay away from the region and be aware of its presence," she said.
Anyone seen the resident croc or ever heard of it's presence? Why would a croc be so far south?

R.I.P Frank
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2006-06-19 13:21After a fairly long battle with lung and throat cancer my godfather passed away last night. Not sure if many of you have been to Walpole, but he was the local professional fisherman and had a million and one stories of battling giants of the ocean and surviving the Southern seas. He loved the water and fishing and it was his lifeblood which supported his family. I was conflicted for many years about what damage he was doing to the system vs the need to put food on the table for his family. I have so many memories as a child of jumping in the boat after I'd get home from school and rush over the other side of the inlet to see what they had caught in the scening nets. Or up to the ice factory when they had been out deepsea, or at the Nornalup inlet mouth during salmon season for so many years.
I just thought I'd take the time to immortalise for my future memories one of the men who made me realise my love of the ocean and fishing.
Rest in Peace

Socceroo's
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2006-06-13 10:25Off topic for a fishing website, but what a game!!!!!!!!!! Amazing that the Aussies managed to come back after such a dubious goal. Watching them beat Uraguay - Youraguy (or however its spelt) by penalties, then play well against the Greeks and the Dutch fills me with pride of the Australian efforts. Supercoach Guus is a whole new league, certainly don't think Frank Farina will be showing his face anytime soon.
Must say I was screaming at the TV and doing happy dances when the goal to take the lead went in. Awesome to see such strong team support over there as well.
OZZIE OZZIE OZZIE, OI OI OI.. Be interesting to see how well the Brazilian's go tonight!

Dissappointed
Submitted by TAPOUT on Mon, 2006-05-15 23:59Hey Guys.
Ive got a story that a friend told me the other day wich really made me wonder what the world is coming to. He told me how he left Hillaries marina to try his luck with some morning fishing. He headed south along the coast in his tinny.
He got a Few km,s down when the engine decided to die. He tryed for a period of time to try and start it but to no avail. After checking all the obvious things and having a good look at every thing he decided that he had no option but to try and get somebody to assist. There were at least four or more boats in the general area that he tryed to gain the attention of to no avail. After another period of time trying to start the engine he decided reluctantly to set off a flare. This is the dissapointing thing. Not one person came to assist. Even a surf lifesaver was seen observing the flare from shore but appeared to not be concernd. Now I could understand maybe one or two boats happen to not see the flare. But four boats not seeing a flare in broad daylight.
That to me is unacceptable. The boats were close enought to see how many were aboard so there is no excuse. Now regardless of the situation or weather a flare is a flare and when I see someone set one off Im definatly going to respont to assist. But hey thats just me. Maybe the fact that theres a chance that whoever responds might have to get this guy back to the boat ramp is just to much to ask of some people. God forbid we interupt your fishing time to help a fellow fisherman. Who I might add would go out off his way to help anyone else.
Anyway I just didnt think that people were still like that. Its Dissapointing. By the way im not having a go at anyone in particular Just bringing this fact to every ones attention. Ill be interested in hearing anyones opinion on this matter. PS; Sorry about the spelling mistakes my proof reader is asleep.

CRAYFISH - overated?
Submitted by max199 on Sun, 2006-05-14 11:48I've eaten crays straight out of the pot and microwaved with a little sea water and it was quite tasty. I also have had crays caught by myself diving, put in an ice slurry then cooked on a bbq onboard and it was not too bad either.
But I've eaten crays from reputable Perth seafood outlets and was so disappointed at the taste it put me off eating them and even diving for them.
It leads me to come to the conclusion that crays, to me, have a strong taste and can be toughish and a bit stringy so why are they sort after so much by recreational fishers?
