Cervantes - Jurien: Beach - Saturday night - brief report
Submitted by Skippydogg on Mon, 2013-02-25 11:13Hey all,
First post here. Great site!
Fished a beach between cervantes and Jurien saturday night. Staretd around 4pm and aside from feeding the local nibblers we had a pretty lean afternoon / evening. One small tarwhine, a 300mm soapie, dart, two small flathead, an eagle ray and a big *&^??@! north west blowfish. All went back in.
The howling southwesterly slowed down around 9.
Weed floating everywhere, and we were fishing a pretty clean section of beach. It got a little better when the wind died down but still made the night a little friustrating - as it always does. I swear I magnetically attract the stuff.
FA tailor at all, which was a first for a session in that area.
Seen a huge school of 'herring' swim past us about four times - our baits obviously offended them as the didnt even stop to try our treats. You know it is going to be slow session when even the herring arent interested.
Using locally (Pert) caught tailor, scaly and trumpeter as bait, along with a slab of table cuttlefish (thought i'd try them out for the mulla) and the ubiquitous mulies.
Hardly anyone around too.
Still enjoyed oursleves!!! The night sky in between moonset and sunrise was epic.
cheers

Kalbarri this week
Submitted by drifta on Fri, 2013-02-22 22:01Just got back from 5 days landbased fishing in Kalbarri which I have to say was a whole lot better than when I was there this time last year, didn't catch what I was targetting but got some pretty good bycatch in the process.
First night fished the sand bar on the river and hooked a monster shovelnose, stuffed around for about 40 minutes trying to get it shallow enough to land but everytime I got it into the drop off next to the beach it would take off before I could get a hold of it. I'd had enough so grabbed the line to hold it in close while I tried to get a hand on it but it was to much pressure and the line snapped.
Second and third night were spent fishing the jetty where the missus caught the usual huge amounts of small silver bream and finger marks plus a few small estuary cod, only notable catches on the second night were two size Javelins by the missus and a small shovelnose by me. On the third night the jetty was going off! Baby mulla's were smashing bait fish right along the jetty while giant herring were leaping all over the place with small tailor following suit. To say I regretted not bringing my bream rod along would be a massive understatment! This was also the biggest and only tailor caught the whole trip after hours of throwing poppers and waxwings at a few different spots.

![](http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/brett_03/kalbarri%202013/DSC_0057_zps5e8ce2bc.jpg)
Fourth night hit Red Bluff beach where my second cast with a half eaten mullet fillet must have landed right on this little mulla's head as he hit it before I could put the rod back in the holder. Third cast resulted in a little gold spot with it going quiet after that and no more bites except for the pickers.
![](http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/brett_03/kalbarri%202013/DSC_0120_zps6032ae1c.jpg)
Last night so went to the jetty again so the missus could have some fun on some smaller stuff, again the usual countless undersize silver bream and finger marks with the occasional cod. Had an AUSTRALIAN couple near us who were filling their bucket with undersize cod, until what appeared to be some locals had some words with them after which they reluctantly released the next few caught until the locals left. Later that night hit Red Bluff beach again but was having trouble getting baits out behind the waves, after a couple of hours of no bites even after sliding out a half mullet well beyond the waves we made the move back to the sand bar. Few slightly larger finger marks from here and the one and only big run was from this nice little cod, not much of a fight but was nice to get one a bit bigger than all the little ones around.
Apologies for the shit fish photo's the missus hadn't used my camera before
Cheers,
Brett
Ps. For anyone going up for the classic, there was cops set up on the main road in front of the pub during the middle of the day doing random breath tests which I never seen there before

PGFC Fad 20/2/13
Submitted by Camo.W on Thu, 2013-02-21 11:02Ventured out to the Perth Game Fishing Clubs FAD yesterday, with the intention of doing a bit of bottom bouncing on the way back in. Tigh was in flying form forgetting to put the bait on the boat before leaving, so we stopped at a spot and picked up a couple of livies, then went for my first trip out to a FAD. Strong easterly in the early morning slowed our progress out, but started dying as we finally got there, and the Dollys were everywhere. Very, Very finicky and after throwing a handful of different lures at them Tigh hooked up on a soft plastic to the biggest of the day, on 20lb gear, which was a great sight of aerial display and after 20mins we got him on board (The guy in the blue shirt + biggets of the fish). Tigh continued his stella form by then dropping the fish overboard while cleaning it and sending down to the bottom. :( . So after another hour or so of throwing everything we had at them including the same plastic colour and many others, I decided to rig up one of our livies and throw him over. 30 seconds later the reel was screeming and I had 10mins of fun before bringing him boat side. Grants turn was next so rigged up another livey and 15 seconds later he was on. All in all a good first attempt out wide.

Typical EShed
Submitted by Feds on Sat, 2013-02-16 08:32Hi guys,
thought I would give a quick report....Eshed is fishing really bad...there are heaps of snags close in and not big runs to report.
after last years mulls way season and odd tuna things have gone very quiet. There are reports of smallish mulloway being caught up to about 12 kg.
personally I have spent hours and hours fishing. This year very unproductive. So decided to try a new spot where a mate had caught a 25kg mulloway. He bought a Kmart rod worth $30 and landed 4 45cm tailor, three flat head and the monstor mulloway.all on gangs and Mulies. In two session I caught to size pinkies at 51 and 55 cm heaps of tailor and flat head....couple of big chunks taken out of tailor being live baited....all in all way better fishing experience than e shed
I generally think ppl under estimate Mullies and I know of many big fish being caught up river at the moment. It seems like they have not pushed down river yet in any great numbers. Give last year was so productive I'm wondering if pulling up 20-30 from Estes last year has actually impacted river stocks...
the good news at Eshed that a lot of the young clowns have moved on. More families down there which is nice to see. I Hear they ate all ballooning for sharks at he moment...lol...
Anyhow I gues one of my point is I'd rather catch some fish hen no fish and frankly catching scales doesn't do it for me....
anyone else heard or more importantly seen any fish being landed. Obviously don't post locations just want to know if its just me.

Wednesday 13th - the deep and the FADS
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Fri, 2013-02-15 00:01Managed to hook up with Colt_Striker (Jason) yesterday. The weather was fine and we were hoping for a good session out in the deep.
Headed out to target some red snapper / bight red fish in 180m, spotted some birds on the way out so did a quick troll around them and picked up a couple of stripeys before continuing on. When we pulled up at the spot we both dropped our lines down, Jase was on the electric and I went manual. He lost his bait on the first drop, I got a triple header - 2 x reds and a big breaksea. With only one more fish available before we bagged out on the demersals I left the job to Jay who picked up a pinkie on his next drop. So twenty minutes after pulling up there we had our limit.
Time to head to the southern FAD, trolled all the way there for nothing but got excited when we pulled up as there were dollies everywhere. You could see them bubbling on the surface and swimming under the boat, then to top the excitement off we saw a stickface break the surface twice chasing some pup dollies. Well the excitement ended pretty quickly, no matter what we and the two other boats out there (Honsu were you out there yesterday?) threw at these fish we couldn't get any interest - surface lures, divers, softies, jigs, bait the works. After 1.5hrs of trying we gave up in frustration, did a couple of laps towing some skirts but nothing happened.
Stopped off at the 40s on the way back to Mangles Bay but nothing was playing the game there either so we called it a day and headed back to the ramp.
It was a hell day on the water, calm as, some good fish to start with and it's always cool to meet a new FW member. It just didn't finish as well as it started. That's fishing.
Few pics below to help show the story...

Canning bridge 14/02
Submitted by drifta on Thu, 2013-02-14 23:31Missus suggested a picnic dinner on the river for valentines day, took the opportunity to take a rod along and soak a big bait while we were there since I'd seen bull sharks feeding in the same spot many years ago.
Had five big runs from the five mullet fillets I put out with the first run tearing off 30lb line at heavy drag while making a few big jumps, had me thinking I'd finally hooked my first bully (after 80hrs of trying for nothing this month).
The result... five big eagle rays each around a 1m wingspan.
This was in the bay area just next to the raffles, no photo's since the missus couldn't figure out how to take the lense cap off and they were going ballistic on the sand while trying to unhook them

The Busso Jetty Report 14-02-13
Submitted by TheJettyRat on Thu, 2013-02-14 22:49Tailor have been fishing well over the past few weeks if you are willing to put in the hours until their feeding time comes on. They have not been running for the majority of the night as they were last year but rather they have been having shorter harder runs that last between 1-2 hours. If you are seriously wanting to catch tailor you may have to put in the hours to find these runs. They have been running quite late over the past week. Bonito are still hanging around with a few being caught at night on tailor rigs and harder runs on hot sunsets when the ocean is very calm. Bonito will take lures if you are fishing for them in the late afternoon or sunset. The best place to fish for these two species is from just before the second shelter onwards. Herring are plentiful at night especially where the dark meets the light from the jetty. There are some quite large herring in the mix that are close to 30cm in size. Herring can be found anywhere after the first bend. Squid have been quite slow but are starting to make a comeback. Several sharks have been landed, hooked and lost over the past month for those who have been willing to put in the long hours. The three species that have been hooked are Gummy, Tiger and Bronzie. There is plenty of fresh bait swimming around under the lights at night time with yellowtail in their thousands for those who want lives or if your mulies run out.

Fads are starting to cook..,...
Submitted by terboz123 on Thu, 2013-02-14 08:22Headed offshore for the morning yesterday....Hit up a fad which resulted in 11 fish being boated another two lost in battle. Biggest went 6-7 kg, there were still some small fish 2-3 kg fish thrown in but generall size was 4-5 kg... our last fish would of been up there with the best of the day, but was thrown back as we already had kept two.
Got them all on the bream gear was so much fun, with one tussle last longer then 20 mintues , as i was playing him on 12 pound
The two fads we visted were holding good amounts of dollies, it whether you could interested them or not. We caught ours on skirts/baits/placcies....we had to keep changing everything up as theyh consistently were getting spooked
was wierd heading out, at roughly the 100m mark we just went through this wierd fog....couldnt see anything within 10 m, slowed right down, then all of a sudden back to clear skys!
headed offshore to the 600m mark after about 830 am...and trolled for a lonesome kingfish which i found wierd....maybe a rainbow runner?

Night fishing on the three mile
Submitted by rex73 on Wed, 2013-02-13 14:38Last week someone asked what they might catch out on the three mile at night, well we went out last night and I have listed everything we caught. I don't know how helpful it is but certainly shows that you can get a good mixed bag of fish not far from home.
So we headed out at about 5pm and the water was nearly glassy as we flew down the coast at 28kns. We anchored up in only 12m of water but a nice lump nearby coming up to 9m. we started with a little burley out the back as we set up the big floating baits out the back of the boat, one bait was a whole bonito we caught the other day. things were a little quiet at first but then the first wrasse started to come in and my friend pulled in a nice skippy. Then without warning the big rod with the whole bonito bait started losing line pretty quickly and we watched as the balloon was pulled under the water and popped. My friend grabbed the rod and waited for the fish to take the bait properly but unfortunately the fish must have taken us near the bottom and the 100lb leader line was scraping across the reef and the fight didn’t last too much longer, the leader wore through.
Also not long after we had that big hook up there was two small boats not that far from us and we could hear them yelling and screaming and I am sure I heard one of them say shark, there was screams of look at that and whooo how big is that, all coming from their boats. So we wondered if the shark we had hooked had headed off over to their boats after we upset it. if anyone knows someone that was fishing last night and they saw a big shark near their boat I would love to hear about it.
Our list of edible size fish
2 Tarwhine
6 skippy one near 1kg
3 tailor one went 49cms
1 king George whiting 53cm
Our list of other fish
eagle ray
striped whirra
sand bass or false barra
A couple of brown wrasse and red wrasse
Under sized pinkie
A small round black ray, smallest I have ever seen
port Jackson
scorpion fish
Snook
Then the bust offs
We both lost a big fish, busted us off on our small gear, most likely stingrays
We had a floating bait go off with a mulie on it, I had it on for a little bit but it spat the hook, would have been a medium sized shark
Then when packing up we found the whole skippy bait we had out had been bitten off leaving us with just a head on the hook
Then of course the big bait went off and we lost it.
