rotto today
Submitted by roddo on Mon, 2012-12-31 19:12Headed out to rotto today for our first time and it was a great day couldn't ask for better weather. Headed straight out to the 100mt mark and chased some bait schools around with no success so headed in a little shallower got a monster sambo on bait along with a coral trout a.pink snapper and a dhu fish along with another 7undersize dhuys a dozen black arse few sgt bakers and couple scorpion fish. This was all in the one spot we then tried a few more spots with nothing serious showing up so called it a day.
Gotta say the coral trout made my day as it was my first and I also didn't realise they came down this far.
Cheers

The Busso Jetty Report 30-12-12
Submitted by TheJettyRat on Sun, 2012-12-30 22:18Fishing on the jetty has picked up quite considerably over the past 2 weeks. The good news is the Bonito are finally back after quite a few years of no show. If you are after a few they are on the bite on the second half of the jetty in the evening just after the sun goes over the horizon. Make sure you are there on that time though since they run for only about 10-15 mins. If you can pull yourself out of bed before sunrise the Bonito can also be caught then. I have been using Rapala X-Rap's colour Crystal Ghost to catch them, Smilin Jacks have also been working well. Good sized tailor around 40cm have also turned up in the early evening with larger ones around 50cm in the morning. The best place for the tailor at the moment is around the halfway point. Pike and snook are still around in good numbers and can be found anywhere along the length of the jetty, some large ones can be landed right on sunset. Herring are quite thick with some very good sized ones in the mix, anywhere past the bend is good for them. Squid numbers are still a bit down for this time of year however some monsters are floating around here and there, you may have to work a bit to get them. Crab numbers on the jetty seem to be a bit down since they have been heavily fished over the past weeks, you are better off going to the beach down the road a bit and scooping them.
Side note : If you are heading down to fish the jetty leave the burley at home, there was so much burley in the water from tourists yesterday that the slick stretched a good 100mtrs past the end of the jetty. Too much burley ruins the fishing and makes them go off the chew.
That is all for now, tight lines and good fishin.

Taught a fishing lesson by wife
Submitted by Fisheagle on Sun, 2012-12-30 16:33Launched from Woodman Point yesterday (29/12/2012) and went out to FFB. After having a whale surface right next to the boat scaring the living daylights out of us, the missus got stuck in to the fish. Caught about 10 different species including three Skippys. When wind picked up we moved to Carnac Island where she caught a 2m Tiger Shark.
Going back to see if I can find my name tomorrow.

Lady Joyce trip
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2012-12-29 16:01Had the boat in the water at 0600 yesterday [ Friday] morning for a run down to the Lady Joyce wreck. Near flat condition saw us cover the ten nm at 23 knots in no time.
There were two other boats there when we arrive, one anchored just south of it and the other with a sea anchor out? in near windless conditions [must have been a visitor from down south because nearly all locals anchor and fish to prevent breaking the schools up]. We anchored right on top of the wreck and cast away from it in an attempt to get away from the millions of undersized fish that inhabit it. 2 just size black snapper in an hour and what seemed like 200 releases of small fish was enough to make us move.
One of the other boats set sail for home and the other looked like he was going prospecting a couple of miles further south so we upped anchor and moved to a small edge not far from the wreck. After anchoring it was pink snapper of 3-4 cm over minimum and black well over . Colin got an estuary cod around 70cm . We had a fish count after an hours fishing to check on our numbers, black snapper 7, need one more, pink snapper 5, could do with one more, estuary cod 1, could do with one more for our limit.
Over the next half an hour it was big black snapper one after another, all to be released, a big break off on what felt like a huge cod until finally a rankin cod put an end to our trip.
The wind had changed from a gentle puff from the SSE to NE about 5 knots just enough to cause a ripple on the water for the run back home. Arrived at the leads and was tempted to turn around and head back out because the closer in we got, the stronger and HOTTER the wind got. Stiil a nice cruisey trip with good company, some good fish and back home at 1030.
Not enough good fish to take pics IMO so none to put up

Quick flick this morning
Submitted by Michael Yoni on Sat, 2012-12-29 13:01No whinging, whining etc. Just a boring post.
This (4:30sm) mornings catch "south metro" not too secret as "my secret spot" as there were 5 others fishing in the same area, so no complaints about them taking my spots.
Note the bite mark on the dorsal side of the 5th whiting. Most likely herring as I then caught two of them after I landed this.
Went for a swim then home after a few hours.

todays fishn on the 5
Submitted by dakka on Thu, 2012-12-27 16:39 howdy all
I took my ole man and son for a fish on the 5 today. It was perfect conditions to catch a feed. we ended up with a variety of fish today, it started of with heaps of wrasse which my old man wanted to keep, i said no pop put em back we will be on to something soon as i had a good berly trail happening. it wasnt long before the skippy arrived which kept him busy' then a few 410, 430mm snapper both released,a couple of undersized black arse, we ended up with a 33cm one which i reluctantly kept for him even though it was sized, if it was just me and my son i would have released it, got a rat sambo, eagle ray and then this big lipped thing i didnt know what it was i think some sort or morwong with the rubery lips it had,but there was no way dad was gonna put it back he reckons it will taste good it was 585mm long any help about the id of this fish would be great please. then on the way home 8kms from land i lost the steering to my boat, so while i was having a look at it pop was chucking in a line and was onto some nice whiting. i had to disconnect cable from motor and my son steered it home from the motor, i think it might be my helm as the cable was coming in and out from the helm but was not turning the motor, any way had a good morning with my dad which i only see about once a year hence him wanting to keep everything LOL he is from the country and doesnt get to fish that often.
cheers

Hamilton Island QLD Over Nighter
Submitted by Longcast on Thu, 2012-12-27 13:44My Family and I have just returned back from our Holiday at Hamilton Island.
During our stay on Hamilton we charted Sea Fever Sports Fishing for an overnight charter last Thursday and Friday they operate out of Airlie Beach there boat Reel Work is a 32 foot game boat.
Target species Giant Trevally on surface lures.
With some blue water trolling between spots.
All equipment was supplied by charter which included.
Custom Aussie Built 7'8 PE10 Popping Rods.
Shimano 1800 SW Stella's.
Lures used where Halco Roster Poppers with upgraded terminal tackle.
Various brands of stick baits where taken but the poppers where the stand out.
Not having to lug rod tubes and copious amounts of tackle was a nice change.
Service quality and put you n the spot from our skipper Ash was ten out of ten very professional service.
On the Thursday we were picked up at 0600 from the main ferry terminal on the Island.
We commenced our two and half hour voyage out to Hook and Hardy Reef.
Breathtaking spot taking in the Islands with the family as we headed out to the reef.
High Lights of the Trip.
My oldest Daughter catching her first GT and the largest Mackeral for the trip.
Youngest Daughter also catching her first Mac and Shark and various other species having the whole family involved and having fun for the two days.
Snorkelling late afternoon on the reef with family and then moving around to our anchorage point and Ash saying just have a cast into that pressure spot on the reef which was holding bait third bloop from the popper and ambushed by an XL Black GT on sunset.
Twenty One GT where caught and released over the two days not including missed hook ups and terminal tackle and one lure being punctured by the teeth on a large GT all the way through to the rattle.
The conditions where perfect for the visual display from these fish and how hard they strike loved it hope you enjoy the pictures.

fishing around perth
Submitted by bronzey92 on Wed, 2012-12-26 01:49just an update for anyone curious of some spots ive been in the past couple of weeks.
swan river:
went down on sat with a mate, fished between left bank and the C shed. My mate was using hard bodied lures most the time and caught a few flat head ( all undersize).
My soft plastics remained untouched (except my the occasional blowie) until i got in front of the left bank. In 2 casts caught a decent flat head and flounder ( didnt have size charts so they were released) on first jig.
Then another 30cm+ flatty was caught on one last cast of the C shed jetty ( i think its called that).
Yesterday whilst enjoying a beer at the river also noticed lots of birds working baitfish in the middle of the river, between point walter spit and mossie park, right in the middle, was devestated i couldnt take the dingy out for a troll.
Secret harbour:
Went to secret harbour on friday and saw heaps of fishing busting up out the back, lots of fish activity in general, saw what looked like a couple of sharks aswel but still not too sure what it was, could have been seals.
Also went yesterday and there was bulk whiting 3m off the shore on all the sandbanks, definitely worth checking out if you live down that way.
Lastly went out on the boat on sunday, went to one of my mates whiting spots near garden island. Didn't see many whiting around, but as many herring as you wanted, and also quite a few north westers...

Mixed Bag
Submitted by Faceplanter on Mon, 2012-12-24 08:57Went for a fish at Floret drain yesterday morning with my young bloke. No tailor but got 4 Dart a Herring and most surprisingly a Striped Threadfin between the two of us. Also fished down on the river at Burswood Saturday arvo and got my first two Swan river flatties. None of them monsters of course but a pretty good start to my three weeks off work. Hopefully Kalbarri in a couple of weeks will see a few big ones for us.
Cheers.

Niagara river fishing
Submitted by cuthbad on Mon, 2012-12-24 05:32Ive been in Canada for about 6 months now and havent done nearly as much fishing as I would have liked with work taking most of my time. When I first arrived I was pretty keen for some fishing, but was told not to expect much with the water too warm. Gave it a shot anyway and had some fun with a few carp.
Tried again a few weeks later, this time after bass, but it was a pretty poor effort with a bunch caught but none any bigger than a small herring lol.
I was hoping to get into the salmon run around October but things were crazy busy at the time and that didnt happen unfortunately. A while back I saw KenTse's post about his sturgeon fishing and remembered we had a fishwrecked member in Toronto, which is not far from me. So I hit him up for some info and got some great advice re rigs, bait, gear and spots. Thanks again Ken!
So with this new info I tried for some Niagara river trout and after striking out the first time I came away with a 55cm steelhead (migratory rainbow trout). Was good fun with the 8lb leader and these fish know how to use the current to their advantage! I wasnt fishing for a feed but the guy who netted the fish for me assured me it was perfect eating size. Gotta admit he was right, probably the nicest tasting fish Ive caught from shore.
Such a strange style of fishing for someone with no freshwater experience. Casting upstream and letting the rig bounce along the bottom with the current. Every rock the sinker hits feels like a bite and takes a while to get used to. Also seems like tiny hooks with size 8 or 10 the standard, but I guess its all about deception with trout.
Anyway was good fun. Got down again this morning and lost a good fish right at the bank. Hopefully will get a bit more time for fishing over the next couple of months while work is quieter. Goddam itss getting cold though, had to buy an ice fishing suit just to get through a few hours of fishing. Literally have to scrape the ice off the rod guides every few casts. Hopefully will get out on a charter or something in spring so might have something a bit more impressive to report
Cheers guys and have a good xmas!

Breaming
Submitted by dan.the.man on Tue, 2012-12-18 21:55Went for a flick yesterday evening to a spot I frequent, met a guy there who was bait fishing and he was quite happy withhimself after landing a33cm,the biggest he had got in awhile and i thought maybe it could be a good evening!with no hook ups after an hour(usually an active spot for me).
i decided to move on to a couple more spots with not much luck, couple of tiny fish but nothing major, not put off as the weather was good and I was just enjoying being by the river, then hit a spot where it got interesting.
hooked onto"a decent fish" awesome power my heart was racing as I new if I landed it it would be my pb. Landed her for a quick pic and released again, went 36/37
shortly after hooked another, smaller fish but actually gave an even better fight than the previous.landed for another quick pick and release.things went quite for a while and then hooked on to something big again that started peeling line, changing direction hard, then changed again And went rite for a tree, put pressure on the spool to slow down and tried to guide him out but he broke me off,was using 6lb braid with 5lbleader, I decided not to rig up again and left them bitting.fish caught after 6pm,upper swan on z-mans grub in pumpkin seed colour
not massive fish, but certainly a big jump up for me from high 20 to 30 cm range I was gettin before, have to say I was buzzing after it. Still stoked so wanted to share, please excuse the bad pics, was rushing the process to get fish bak in ASAP, can't wait to get out again,

Dunsborough Deep Drop Cherry Pop
Submitted by Lamby on Sun, 2012-12-16 19:39During the ban many bevy's fell victim in the discussion of fishing & suffice to say Harro & Nizzy sold me the virtues of deep drop all too happy to pop my cherry! I was keen to put my tub to the test & had a nice cruise out there before handing it over to Harro for tuition time. The boys had only touched the bottom after sorting the drift & both began wrestling with double headers, Nizzy with a Puka & Blue Eye whilst Harro was dealing with a double Blue.
Next drift I had a crack getting my own double of Puka & Blue Eye, too stoked on the Blue to worry about the Puka.
2 drifts, bagged out & time to go home. Cheers for the day lads, good banter as usual!

Northern Suburbs Crays
Submitted by Jabba Jabba on Thu, 2012-12-13 14:23Does anyone have any news or opinions on what's happening with the whites? We've had 5 pots off the back of the 3 mile in 23 metres out from Quinns Rocks since before that massive storm but have only picked up about 15 whites. Noticed this morning that most of the pro's have moved on from that area and we got no crays out there this morning after a 3 night soak.
Is it worth hangin out there a bit longer? Thinking about bringing them inside for the locals.
