Just got in from a GREAT arvo's fishing.  Unfortunately log on to the site to see some d**khead trying to start stuff, sigh.  Anyway, went out about 3.30 this arvo and was expecting 3 knot northerlies, ended up being 15, spewn.  Anyway decided to troll some skirts and raised two very fiesty sails in the first hour and a half and a very inquisitve dolphinfish, unfortunately no hookup.  We decided to try a bit deeper and with no interest for the next 2 hours except one little zip decided to head in.  As we were slowly starting to motor in the wind died off to its forecast 3 knots and up flared the bottom showing some good signs of fish.  A quick drift and bang, solid hookup and a nice little rankin cod, things were looking promising.  Next drift another big hookup, only to be disappointed with a 6kg golden trevally which felt like a red.  On the way up the golden also brought two rat dolphinfish, but with nothing to throw at them they just cruised around and disappeared.  Another few more drifts and we got an 8kg cobia and 2 just size spanglies.  On the way in past north west reef the birds were going nuts and on closer inspection we discovered 8-10kg longtails with solid shark mackerel jumping all over the surface and busting up small baitfish.  Second cast and whammo, 10 minutes of getting toweled up on 6kg and sharked, doh!  As it was getting dark we headed in and grabbed a coldie to celebrate a quick arvo session.  Only took one photo, but a beautiful sunset none the less. ;)

Got back on Sunday night from our trip to Coral Bay and Exmouth, I thought it was time I posted some pics.

Rolled into Coral Bay on the 24th to be greeted by 20kn+ winds, thinkings didn't look good on Christmas night with 40-50kn winds at the boat ramp. Finally the wind died off on the 27th and allowed us 5 days of fishing, I think the cyclone had something to do with it.

First day out on the boat I had Amanda's Uncle Kev and Cousin Matt as deckies, all we wanted was a fish on board, so we went out the north passage and trolled lures down the back off the reef. Within 15 min Kevs reel screamed and a 15kg mackie was the result.

After this Kev and Matt lost there breakfast over the side, I helped them by yelling abuse and taking photos haha

The second day saw us heading out the South Passage searching for some Reds, Amanda was the first to boat a fish with a nice Rankin.

Matt scored his first Red Emp and he was pretty happy about it

The next day Matt and myself headed out and did a lot of driving around looking for fish. It paid off with Matt scoring a huge 7kg Red (waiting for him to email the pic)

I got the biggest Rankin I have ever seen weighed in at 10kg, I thought it was a shark as it took the bait while I was reeling up a lil red throat. The pic doesn't do it justice.

The next day I had to ban Matt from the boat for getting more Reds than me haha. I went out with Amanda and scored Two 5kg Reds. I was happy when I saw that Red come up.

New years eve was a cracker day in the boat, I had Matt and Elliot as deckie, we started out early as I had to be back early to go on the quad bikes.

We started of trolling south of the south passage, after an hour my reel screamed and after a short fight I had a 7kg Mackie

After that we hit a spot to try for some Reds, We got a few small spanglies then Elliot hooked into his first Red.

Not to be out done i got a 7kg 78cm Red on the last drop, the fish swam through everyones lines it was a total mess but I got it up.

Matt also got a nice Rankin and I got a Spanglie.

The fishing was better than I thought it would be and it was great to get the boys into there first Reds. If your going there watch out for the south passage, a 5m+ boat flipped upside down on new years eve with the guys lucky to survive.

Well we left Perth on last thursday morning and headed down to Walpole for 5 days of fishing. We stayed at the Coalmine caravan park, which was great..and very close to the action!

Friday morning we were up at 0530 and hit the water on sunrise.

 We had 4 of us piled in the runabout, beers..bait and a couple of rounds of vegemite and cheese sangas...and we wanted to go and try for a few fish around the mouth of the Nornalup Inlet. After a red bull, a couple of winny blues and some pushing..we finally got our boat to the river mouth, as we had struck a mega low tide ! Who would of thought the tides raced so much this far south. We pulled the boat up on the shore near the house boat mooring and all 4 of us walked up the right hand side of the mouth, and fished off the rocks.  After a few hours, we ended up with a nice feed of Tarwine! We then went across to the sandy side of the mouth, and casted around into the shallows..but found nothing on the bite!

Sat morning..kicked Claire in the guts and were on the water again at sunrise. We were greeted with fog this morning..and decided that today we wanted  to catch some king george. We were working the coalmine beach flats...and found heaps of bites any where there was structure. Claire hooked onto a nice bream and i caught my first size kg..so all was going well !  We landed 12 size kgs this day and found them to come on the bite when the sun was well up and starting to warm the water. They were very tricky to hook up...which provided a challenge for us. We used prawn  for a while, but when we changed our bait to Cockles..shit did they go off!  Once we had taken the cockle meat out of the shell, we were throwing the shells  in front of our boat, which proved to be good burley for them. We also tried fish baits(mulie,whitebait) but found that brought in the pesky Trumpeter! We had a lucky find in the arvo, when I spotted a big blue manna in the shallows. I jumped out with my landing net..and scooped him up...we measured him and he went 174mm

Sunday morning we worked the flats again, for a few more King george. Claire once again caught the biggest fish of the day, with a nice 34cm bream.  Then after yesterdays 174mm crab...we struck it lucky again....but this one was a little bigger at 185mm. We had a great day and headed home for a few cold redbacks.

The crabs tasted great (better than mandurah ones)....and were full of meat! First time ive ever filled a cereal bowl with meat from 2 crabs. My first taste of King george was great to..they are some tasty buggers. All in all we had a great time in Walpole, bugger all wind, nice and warm weather......but just watch those bloody march flys..there the size of a small finch!

well im sittin on the rocks at north mole, been here a good 2hrs so far. Nothing to show for it yet. Sun is starting to set, hoping it'll bring something decent in. Got 3 surfs in the water with cali squid on 4x ganged 6/0 hoodlums all on running rig. Still havent got any loner rays, maybe its to breezey and cool. While waiting we have 2x more gp rods with some cut prawns on paternoster rigs, not much luck. With 5 rods in the water, me and the mrs are spinnin some mulies, nothing either, mulies untouched. Lets hope sundown brings me luck. I'll update this post when i got something. ZzZzz...

Headed out from Two Rocks with the other 120 boats,sea were slight from the south east ,had Sherbs along for the ride . Tryed many spot throughout the day with only the odd fish coming from the patches and lumps .Im not to sure on Jesse's fish skills at the moment ,he seems to be letting the team down,with only a couple of small blackass to his name .No big dhuies to report but some good sambo's tally at the end of the day

Went for a crab down at Mandurah near the Cut yesty.

Picked up a dozen crabs , threw loads of undersized back.

Was very slow at the start and picked up around 3.30 onwards.
Only picked up one that was a good size but all were fairly full of meat.

Cant believe the amount of people that had pots out.

Was a good day though, did a pot pull lap and then cranked up the stereo and dove overboard to cool off. repeat.

Pity I had to drive as a esky loaded with Ice and beer would of topped of the day.

If anyone would be kind enough and give me some places to give a whirl and when's the best time to fish for them? I hear that it could be anytime aslong as the water is flowing. Is that true?

Hi everyone,
Just got back from Exmouth last night after a great week with the wife and kids and a couple of other families. Weather was pretty ordinary with 31 knot winds and a couple of scorchers of 46 degrees plus but we had a ball. Fished every day but had to work hard in the conditions. Have a few cuts and bruises to prove it. The fish were going off with the hot water temps and we had no probs catching a variety of great fish including some huge Mackies, Tuna, Rankines, Coral Trout,Coronations, Big Trevs, heaps of Cobia and some Dollies. We released a heap of fish and ate fish every single night. The Billfish were out there in force but having a tinnie it was just too rough to get out to the deep parts.(Dan O'sullivans boat had 7 tagged Billies one day we were out there but it would not have been very comfortable) My cousin had his 18 footer up so we opted to get bruised and battered most days at Tantabiddi with only 2 or 3 boats out each day and a few raised eyebrows when we came in with the wind blowing it's guts out and we were the only boat out there some days. My kids (8 and 11 ) caught some nice fish out in the gulf on the tinnie but it was too rough to get them out at the Biddy. I must say in the last 20 years I have been fishing Exmouth I have never seen so many sharks. Whether we fished Tantabiddi, Bundegi or the Gulf we encountered some massive sharks at anchor and trolling. Fortunately we didn't lose too many fish to them but they were everywhere. We had an 8 footer come up and headbut the prop while bringing in a mack off the troll and there was even a 7 foot shark in a metre of water at the ramp while launching. The one or two days that were half descent with the wind we caved and took the kids and wives to Turquise for a snorkel and did the family thing. It was a great trip and the kids cant wait to get back. I love Exmouth, the locals and the fishing. What a place! It was the first trip ever that "the Boys" were not fishing every day from 5.00am till 5pm for the entire week and we actually swam in the pool every day and even hit the Potshot most days. I have a heap of photos that I will post as soon as I download them off my camera. Sorry for the long report but I am really pumped after arriving up there on the 2nd of Jan to terrible winds and still having such a great time and catching so many great fish.

PS A special thans to the boys at Bluewater who are always too happy to give us a weather report when we cruise into town. It was great to be checked by fisheries on more than one occasion and we had two boat safety checks which is fantastic considering it is the "quiet" time for Exmouth. Hopefully fishos do the right thing and stick to the limits giving our children and their children years of good fishing up there.

well we just got home from jurien and one word to sum it up would be "WIND" it blew sotherlies non stop and seriously limited us in the the four days we were there to only the inshore reefs, however we had fun catching monster skippy, dhuies, BB and heaps more on light gear and i managed to get a few PB's freediving with the spear.

Down in the swan last week - couple of crabs. Loving the river atm, bloody nice even at 10pm with a wettie. Blues are just starting to get to size but in a month or so they will be the beautiful. Got them in about 5m and missed quite a few. Nothing like a fresh crab BBQ in the middle of the night after a good dive.

went for a buffy bash today with liam(SOI) snorkelled round to the spot and got the gear in

burleyed up abit with dough and got some seaweed

ended up landing 13 buffys myself and hooking up 20 times

liam landed about 8 and a strange fish which needs ID. liam also managed to foul hook a big mullet which took off like a bat out of hell and hooked up to a 3-4kg buffy which did him in 20 seconds

we fished with 4lb briad main lines and 8lb fluro leaders

 even the small 1kg ones in the pics were awesome fun on the light gear

but i must say the pics didnt do them justice but what can you do

all in all a good day out

Fished Pengo's tonight ( penguin Island ferry area ), our main plan was to fish the sand bar but that area was closed to the public so we headed to the jetty instead, that was packed not enough room, so we head about 300 mtrs up the beach and set up our gear for the evening fish.

I was the first to hook up with a small KG, that was released after that it went quiet for a while, I was thinking why did I come here to fish, after the sun set the guys at the jetty let out this big burley trail which turn things to the better for us, we just fished the burley trail, the Herring were taking baits from a bottom rig that was casted about 6 feet away from us, then after a bit that die off and the Herring were hiting the float set up we had.

also landed a couple of blowie's and jazz lost a Tailor in the surf, over all we took home 12 herring.

Headed down south for the weekend to fish the Blackwood river with damo. Got into Bunbury pretty late thanks to an overheating car (radiator was clogged, and I'd just had it serviced the week before). After dropping the car off in the morning, we headed down to the south west.

We hit the river after stopping for some lunch in margos. Unfortunately all afternoon we didnt get a single fish, and barely a nudge. Lots of snags to fish though. Probably too many, as you need to find ones with fish on.

Headed in to Yallingup for the night to try again on the sunday. Woke up nice and early and decided to hit canal rocks first. Tried chucking plastics around in the wash and spinning some metals and poppers but nothing was biting. Burleyed up and you could see the fish (herring and skippy at least) but they wouldnt touch anything including some gulp worms wafting around. A few hits on a gulp prawn, but no hookups. We were hoping it wasnt going to be a repeat of the first day.

Went to the blackwood next, and first snag just up from the ramp and I got a few hits on the SP. Cast out again and 3rd cast of the river got this 34cm bream, a PB.

Tried chucking some more plastics around the snag, but no more hits so went onto the next one. Only about 2 casts and I was on again. This time a nice 35cm bream. So previous PB only held for 15 minutes or so.

Lots of snags around, perhaps too many to choose from.

Tried another snag or two, and damo brought out some of the new Atomic Hardz. Thought that the fat crank ones werent as effective as the thinner shads, but damo started flicking one around anyway. A hit, then pause, then a smash and nice hookup.

Unfortunately no more fish. Seems that once the wind comes in, they dont bite, but it could just be coincidence. Have to find out where the fish are holding on the day, because theres a lot of river to choose from and all of it nice and snaggy. Even though only 3 fish were caught, I ended up getting two really nice sized fish, including my PB (twice :p). Damo got some fish on some new lures, so was happy with that, so still a good trip.

Hey guys, I'm new here to Fishwrecked and I been out n about fishing lately bout 4-5 days a week for the last 5 weeks so I figured I might throw in my 2cents.
I'm just a recreational fisher, never fished off a boat before so dont expect anything too fancy lol.

TAILOR AT THE CANNING BRIDGE

Starting at the canning bridge platform, most nights, starting from about 10pm to anywhere upto 2-5am, chopper tailor has been running, and starting well before summer. I've found that these choppers has outdone the tailors i've been pulling in everywhere else in size. Casting within the channel going underneath the bridge is the go. I found that if the current is going left, cast between the pylons to the left, always cast with the current seeing that they will usually move with the current and they're always facing the bridge to easily spot baits reflecting in the light while passing through the channel. There's only 2 spots on the platform that lets you cast there, so it's pretty much first come first serve. Bait is just the usual mulies or whitebait on your choice of gangs that fit the bait. Although, the mrs did use some really cheap lure that came with a cheap tackle box and DID pull in 2 more tailors then i did, which did heaps for my self esteem lol, that was only her 2nd time fishing after i'd I taught her. The lure was silver, 20gram, kinda looked like a sardine with a single treble on the tail. Did the job. Strange thing was, there was a regular dude to this area next to me and he'd ran outa bait so he put regular fluro coloured labourers earplugs on a 4/0 suicide and still kept pullin in choppers. The best night I had down there It was pretty much 1 tailor per mulie give or take 5 or 6 that i mashed up hookin it up badly, i always use 2kg bags so it was plenty of tailors, not forgetting the mrs nearly matching every hit with her own. Dont usually take any fish home seeing that im kinda sick of eatin em lol. One last thing about that spot for tailors is if you look in the water and theres a current pushing jellies past, its good, if the current is barely moving, it sux and the tailors scatter so dont bother chasing them.

FREO BOAT HARBOUR (near where the trawlers are docked not near cicerellos)

At this area, I always fish off the rocks pointing into the opening of the harbour. This was the first place i found where i could constantly catch tailors from about 2pm in the middle of the day. Tailors have been usually the average 25-30cm, but occasionally you do get 35-40cm. For such a known place and where waters are average, i've caught most of my biggest tailor here. Thing is you have to troll at a decent speed or cast a decent distance otherwise skippy schools will shred up your mulies real quick. There's always skippy and herring around from about lunchtime well into the early morning, but the skippy are mostly very undersized, though herrings arent as frequent but do get to very similar size as my tailors. Bottom fishing just catches the eyes of blue swimmers that picks apart my bait often. Sinking smaller baits like cut and peeled prawns usually gets me trumpeter and yellowtail. Baits i use are mulies on 4/0 gangs for tailor, peeled and cut prawns and burley or pollard (i use my own secret formula of pollard mix i been using for 15yrs) on size 7-8 longshanks for skips, herring, garfish, yellowtail. As for burley cages i always buy the ones with white foam (polystyrene), pull it apart and cut off 2/3 of the foam that allows it to sink just right. Using the full thing as you buy it isnt as good because all you need is a few waves or abit of wind or abit of reeling and your rig will still stay afloat too much. Its cheaper too 1x white foam cage + 2x empty cages = 3x perfect cages. If there is abit of swell and its hard to notice bites, use the cages with a red plastic straw goin through it (running cage). The straw has light boyuncey (however you spell it) so it'd be as good as the custom cages just with abit more sensitivity. With the leader make sure you have enough length, i think 1m is sufficient. I see alot of fishers use short leaders that wont barely even get them a nibble, well blowies.

NORTH MOLE/QUAY

This place lately hasn't been that good for decent sized tailor. Usually undersize or just reaching the legal mark. Dont get me wrong, few hrs after the sun sets there are hordes of tailor, only haven't caught one big enough for me to say F@#k thats big. This is the most recent place im making my regular trips to and it has been rather disappointing so far this summer. Snooks have been outdoin the tailors in size. Biggest snook i caught from there was pushing 48cm, a one off huge tailor was nearing 60cm but after getting up after measuring i slipped while holding onto it still, leg grazed up between rocks, ripped my rig straight off my rod (i dont know what made me measure before i unhooked it, probably still stoked bout this tailor), had to let the fish go to get myself back up. I was so disappointed to watch it swim away with my glowlight still hanging off it. Saw it swim past a few times later, tried casting ahead of it a few times to get it, but no luck. Apart from tailor, Snook also have their days when they're hording the mole, though they never seem to venture out that far out. Usually from the last rock you see in the water to about 10m out is all you need to aim for. You dont really need to troll mulies for snook, just chuck it in and wait. They arent picky eaters either, even if all thats left on your gang is a mulie head, they still go for it, unlike tailors that prefer whole unmunted baits. Snooks usually feed anywhere from the surface to a metre or 2 so below surface around here. Those that havent caught snook and likes a fight, you'll soon find yourself disappointed as they suck at giving you a go. Snook isnt bad eating either, i find its similar to garfish. If not, they make good bait as they're rich in oil.
Yellowtail and skippy are everywhere there too. Casting some cut prawns as far as you can with a running sinker can get you some tasty whiting. Cut squid on a running sinker rig got me a few so-so sized flatheads amongst heaps of gummy or port jackson sharks (i dont know the difference).
While chasing everything else, i always throw in my surf rod chasing rays. I've only just started doing this so im low on stories lol. Most ray runs i've had were usually round 5-10pm, i kept losing my rigs to some ray that are just too heavy for my outfit. Til 2 nights ago, scored a southern blue spotted eagle ray, measured just under a metre from wingtip to wingtip. God they tire your arms out good. For rays i make my own gangs with 4x 6/0 hoodlums and a few whole small squid to cover it. I find using a few squids is better then 1 bigger whole squid coz, as it may get pecked or pulled by something else, you dont lose all your bait at once, hence having to bait up less.
Last note about north mole that i see most fishers do, it isnt necessary to crowd over near the lighthouse. Most guys there just keep following everyone else thinkin thats where all the fish are because some other guys are there. I've tried most spots round there and found it isnt noticably different. Where I usually fish is, out of everyone i can see, i'm the furtherest away from the lighthouse and very comfortably away from rogue crossing lines and cray floats, i do quite well.

A useful tip you'll find is to always bring a landing net down with you. There's been countless times where i've had unexpected blue swimmers, squid, cuttlefish etc. come in with my bait. Theres nothing better than catching something else good without tryin to catch em. Always nice to have an extra addition to your lovely dishes, so why not turn it into a platter.
I always have my net, gaff and gigi spear for all those 'if only i had my...' times.

We got to the first set of reefs out from mindarie at about 6.30am anchored after that it was just a case of getting a good berley trail going and the fish came on we got about ten really good sized herring and a few gardies should be good for the next time we go deep. Fresh herring cubes to start with and 3" power minnows were the go once the fish were in.

Been out a couple times over the break and did notice the increased number of undersized dhus.

These ranges from as small as 25cm right upto 50cm. with probably a dozen or so caught.
Funny thing is they are quite deep in the 40-50m ranges (Which i thought smaller fish may have stuck around shallower depths.)

Hit 2 rocks 2 days before new years, and picked up 9 dhu's with only 1 being sized at about 5-6kgs.

Did however manage 4 ripper Black bums, 3 of them well over 600mm in length and estimated at 4kgs.

Many small pinky's about as well in the 30's

Good to see so many smaller fish around. we released 1 fish on a release weight due to a blown up gut, but rest went back no worries by them selves.

Im led to believe that smaller fish seem to be more reziliant to blown up bladders. Am i the only one who notices this?

hey guys been a long time since last post so thought id quickly share me last trip and first since start of october '08....

working shift has been a arse for the fishing of late with the good weather falling on me days on and vise versa... anyways i finally had a slight window this swing around and decided to make or break it... winds looked average and a lowish swell myself and a mate bit the bullet and loaded up for a assult on some grounds about 20mile sth of gero.. spent the arvo gathering some fresh whiting and herring for bait and all looked good..

daybreak bought with it no wind and after fueling the boat and gathering some tucker n fluid we finally chucked the big blackfin in the drink... was a tad more sloshy then had hoped but we decided to press on and go from there.... steamed straight into wat seas there where checking out the odd pot on the way out without finding anything or wetting a line and finally arrived at our first spot after about a hr and 15mins... a quick sound around and the eyes sure lit up over our chosen ledge in 49m of water.... set up for a quick drift and straight up it was on.... mate norm was first into a fish and it looked the goods on his tld20 with 50lb braid as i  decided to drift bait some whole whiting on 6kg i was still making my way down.... after some huff and puff normy got a beaut 12kg dhu up along with a just legal pink which was released... then my rig went scccccreaming for sunset and it was awwwesome to finally get strecthed after the long lay off.... after a really really top fight on light gear a 88cm pink came up and i was on the board!

drifted off the spot so after quick reposition was back into it with normy cranking some more just legal pinks up 2 at a time for release whilst i again played the waiting game watching line slowly fall off the spool.... knew i had made when i was whalllloped big time and it was on again.... this time after another long solid fight on the flick stick i had a beaut 13kg dhu in the boat and was over the moon!!!

fish went quiet at our first spot after letting go alot of small pinks and 2 undersize dhuies which went back fine on the release weight so decided a move was in order. seen a pro boat dropping pots on our way to spot number 2 and realised it was the skipper i worked for at the abrolhos last season.... quick hi howzit ect and he gave me a quick waypoint he had just dropped 3 pots on... was a strictly "DONT TELL NO ONE!" msg after plotting it in so thougth "hrrm must be alright" took another hr steaming straight into the slowly building swell and very confused sea to finally arrive and find the spot.... flat flat ground all around and BINGO oasis! 2.5m rough corally rise the size of a house cooooooovered in fish..... was mayhem for another 45mins of bustoffs and landings on pinkies up to 80cms 1 big sambo and other odds and ends... again the light stick outdid the heavy gear besides the fact of gettin stiched by a couple... ice box looked very nice by then and decided to try once more on another lump b4 heading back....

did 2 drifts over the next lump and boy was the dhuies hungry... bang bang 2 hookups YESSSS! bang bang stiched in the coral.... C****Ts very nice fish.... did it again the dhuies had moved but got a nice blackbum and baldie....

very happy with the results finally have some fish in the fridge and weather was ok....

end tally - 2 dhuies kept 12 & 13kgs 6 released all went down good besides 1 -which got date raped by a small mako

well , the weather has hit us down south, been a good week from work hanging with my family,swimming etc..

even got them all out on the boat  a cple times, swimming, cruising, and most of all catching the bait for the dhuies..haha

anchoring up and swimming is deffinately good fun.. with cold beers ..

With the horrible Summer howling Easterlys then the swing to a horrible howling seabreeze there's not much inbetween. That gap i call "Window Fishing" and i suppose that's better than not getting out at all and that's what i've been doing of late!

I've been targetting the Big Offshore KG and doing well. These plump fish have been 45-60cm in length and go hard on driftbaing outfits. The Window is a great time to get into these fish with not too much travelling also so more Window time to fish and the feed just superb!

A few pic's from Thursdays trip, we got a feed but i spent a fair bit of the Window time to gain new KG spots so that I dont hammer my current spots.....farming!

G'DAY EVERYONE,

Headed down to Albany over xmas to see the rellies and had some fun days out on the brother in laws boat.We bagged some good Queen Snapper with the biggest going to the in law at 75cm.we also bagged some nice breaksea with the biggest just shy of  50cm. We only headed about 10 mins from the boat ramp and fished around the 35- 40 mtre mark.

 was'nt really sure what this fish was but it liked the Lukanus jig

Even caught a John Dory (which was a first time capture for me)and was pretty stoked to get it on the jig.

I probaby pulled more fish on the jig than the boys using bait so will be sure to give it another bash next time!

Well it was a good couple of days fishing annd can't wait to get back down next week to explore some more territory

went to s-bends for chrissy , looks like the tailor had the same idea caught and released about a dozen each morning all around 41 to 46 cm
and a few pike
nice way to christen the new twin power 10000fc and rapala rod

went down ysterday arvo bout 5ish to hilaries as usual. saw a few skippy around. a guy next to me got a nice tailor on mulies and that was all the action. fishoreub rocked up at about 8ish nd we were set. i had my alvey out with a yakka on it and had fun casting lures at burley slicks. it was rather busy so reuben didn put in his big rod till later. anyway back to the report....
put out a live skippy and that got mauled by pickers pretty quickly. the sun went down and the fishing didnt really pick up. later, reub had a nice run on his penn accord and he missed the the fish because his hooks bent under pressure. another run happned but this time on my alvey, but it just missed the hooks. this happened twice to both of us. early this morning around 2 we decided to flick around with lures. we had some success on twistys and raiders on snook and herring. nothing huge to report but it was a nice night overall

I just got back from mandurah and we were cleaning up on 300mm to 380mm tailor and herring. We kept our bag limit them went home leaving them still on the bite...

Loads of tailor and 3kg salmon!!!

Christmas for the Dreamweaver family promised to be a quiet affair, with only one of our four children making the trip down to Mount Barker. Emma, our eldest daughter had promised to come down - minus the partner and duly arrived on Christmas evening, accompanied by all the presents - hers and everyone else's. The plan was for her to be the 'present messenger', taking all ours back up to Perth on Boxing Day Morning.

We'd discussed what we would do, and Emma, always ready to have a crack at fishing on the boat, suggested we do just that.

So, after final preparations the day before Christmas, we loaded the boat and set off at 06:15am and were down at Emu Point boat ramp for 07:00am.

As expected, the ramp was pretty quiet, although unlike last year, we were not the first. There was already one empty boat trailer parked and another chap in front of us. 

After watching him doing everything wrong )he obviously hadn't read my Boat Ramp Etiquette article in FWA's November issue ) and preparing the boat, we dipped the hull into a glassy low tide Oyster Harbour:

After some discussion as we made the long 8 knott arc through the channel, we'd decided that, with a SW swell and moderate wind, and the promise of both to increase later in the morning, we'd head out around Eclipse Island, some 15nm from base. Promised conditions weren't perfect by any means - but that's Albany for you.

By the time we reached the mouth of King George sound, everyone was eager to get out there:

The trip to Eclipse Island was fairly slow going, with a fairly lumpy head sea, despite the low seas and swell.

But by 09:00 am we had reached our destination and I'd set us up on a drift across some good structure.

With Sandra and Emma on board, the requirement to assist removing fish, my role as the photographer, and the need to log all the catches, it promissed to be a VERY busy morning for me!

Sandra was first to drop her line and immediately brought up our first for the day - a nice 50cm Harlequin:

Action was aplenty as Sandra followed that five minutes later with a 45cm Fox Fish, followed by Emma 5 minutes later with a double header of swallow tail, then her own Foxy: followed by a good sized wrasse:

Moments later, Sandra's rod buckled and, after some struggle and some grunting and groaning, a very respectable skippy was brought on board:

It was just before 10:00am and things went quiet, so I decided we'd set up a slightly different drift over alternative ground. Thirty minutes later Emma was first down and immediately her rod buckled - indicating a decent fish, with lots of head thrusts and the occasional line peel. I called it immediately for a blue morwong and was right. A nice 52cm specimen came on board:

After that, and only 6 minutes later it was action a plenty with a nice black bum from Sandra, a Foxy for me, and a double header (Nanny and BA) for Emma - all hitting the deck at the same time. I was going to be VERY busy!

14 minutes later - Emma followed up with another double header - another Red and a swallow tail - here's the red:

Then Sandra's rod buckled savegly and I could see she was loosing line far too fast and was dangerously close to being buried in the structure below. At Sandra and Emma's prompting, I took over. Try as I may, I could not retreive any line:

I might add that this last hook up was whilst anchored and we found out later that the fish had snagged the other paternosta rig hook on the anchor line.

Like I said, conditions weren't perfect, but they could have been worse:

Between the three of us, we had a fair hall of fish, and called it for home just before Noon.

Went for a dive today at a local marina and broke in the new gear, was surprised to find more crays inside rather than on the outside the rock wall. Caught a few but they were all undersize, and most by quite a long way :(

does any1 no which beach in the metro area is going off with tailor and what bait should be used
