Day 1 - 4 days fishing at the dam.
Target fish- Giant snakehead aka toman.

Fishing in the wild dam is like hunting game. Looking for your fish in the big & open water.
It can be rather challenging.
But then nothing beat fishing in the wild than fishing ponds.
Beautiful scenery and exotic fishing groundthat angler's experience during the trip.

My best metro fishing day

Launched out from point peron on Thursday morn with the intention of heading towards rotto somewhere, however wind and weather dictated terms so ended up anchoring and bellying on the back of the 5fb, between 6 am & 7 am I managed to boat 3 dhu between 44 & 47 cm, lost a thumper to a broken swivel before another small one of 28 cm, lost another thumper boat side spat hooks, took photos of fish caught as well as school ball on the sounder, between 7 am & 8 am caught 5 undersized pinkies before getting a keeper of 68cm, again took a pic of the sounder, I noticed a big difference in the way both schools showed upon the sounder, the dhu showed up as a big ball about 1 or 2 metres from the bottom where the snapper showed coming from the bottom, anyway as soon as the tide changed the bite stopped, I don't normally follow the almanac's but Thursday's was spot on, also I'm f@$&ed if I canwork out how to upload pics to this site, can it be made easier pls?

Quick trip with the missus

So while my brother and sister in law headed out wide and slayed them (see the big Trout posted, they got more than that) I took Narelle out from Cairns to try and get her a fish. We had about 2 and a half hours fishing due to kid duties so I took a punt at a spot I have and luckily it paid off. I was hoping for a mackerel or two and we ended up with twelve (school macks). We probably lost over 20 as well and Narelle was in her element and getting stuck in which was awesome to see. A few Bludger Trevally and Mack Tuna added to the fun. As you can see the weather was awful. Good fun but a little jealous now after seeing some other photos sent to me .......

Kalbarri today

Went out at gentlemans hours, easterly was fresher than forecast, anchoring was the only option. Didn't go very far north, initially. Busted up on 40lb leader and bait first drop, then nothing. Faffed around slowly working my way north for nothing, bait and jigs, stuff it, head up to Baldface. Immediate action, first a sambo before the anchor rope was straight, then a nice 70 cm trout, then another sambo. Went quiet and wind dropped, pulled the pick and started to prospect, then the southerly came in with a bang, certainly not forecast. Headed straight for home and really bashed the last four miles or so.

Metro KGs

Headed out of Hillarys about 5pm this afternoon to see if we could find the pinkies.  Conditions were as good as you can hope for so out to the back of the 3 Mile on hard ground to burley up and wait for the schools to move through, hopefully.

On the first drop Mark hooked a good fish which fought all of the way to the boat, and was initially called for a big skippy.  No, a large metro KG (now that is a desired species).  Over the next half an hour a few more came in and the trip was certainly worthwhile.

The pinkies were absent from our spot, except for an undersized 400mm model (hopes were high when this one was landed but unfortunately no more).  Undersized dhu, a 1m bronzie and a couple of 6kg+ Port Jacksons made up the rest of our catch.

A tasty bag in a few hours so close to the coastline.  I still marvel at what you can catch within 15 minutes of the marina, and whiting that measure around half a metre.

quick dawn session

saw this guy cruising past so flipped the lure way in front and swam up to meet him

havent seen any schools of salmon lately but the odd lone one seems to be around..the last couple i got were beaten up but this one was primo. released after pic.

Slow day saved at the vinegar stroke

Me an Bodie headed out yesterday, plan was a deep drop given 4 out of the 5 forecasts were looking great.......you guessed it, the 1 out of 5 that said it would be shiiite was spot on.

Ended up bashing about on the 40's with a dirty northerly wind getting rained on and generally wishing we were at work.....by lunchtime we ended with a few size dhuies for dinner and a nice sambo on the light PE 1.2 gear for Bodie which took a bloody age to get in....in fact Bodie did most of the damage, I was a generally bystander......

After seeing a gap in the clouds after lunch and the wind dropping right out, we made a dash for the deep drop in very confused seas. Despite 5 knot winds out wide for several hours before the westerly came in, the remnant slop made it almost impossible to sound in the deeps, so all we could do is a couple of blind drops for a few greeneys and a knifejaw. As the sun was getting low and the westerly had come in, we decided to give up and headed home.

With the sun getting close to setting and still a long way from home, we came across this new spot. Always happy when you find new spots like this steaming home at 23 knots.

Although we were all packed up, there were no questions asked, we both got our PE2 jig gear out and thought we would have some fun. Wrong. After hooking up immediately, we were both dominated. I got the PE3 gear out....dominated and bricked again. Out with the PE4 for me, PE5 for Bodie with drags tightened right up, and it was on. Fish were not huge but man they were fat and went hard in shallow water. Friggen hectic 30 minute session where we had multiple double hook-ups which had to be cut off as the sun had set and it was getting dark with a long way to go home. Got a few pics of Bodie in action whilst releasing my fish.

Fun way to end and otherwise slow and sloppy day.

West side friday

First real session in my new tub. Caught most fish inside 30m. When it glassed off headed out and found some hard coral in 45m. That's where the nanny come from. The bigger dhu was snagged on a hooked parrotfish. Big bait big fish!! Got stooged a couple if times. Combo of bait jigs and plastics. Put back quite a few small dhu's

Friday

Took the daughter out  fishing today,Had a few good showers of rain, bit rough this morning.Managed my pb snapper just under 1 mtr 9.5 kg,daughter caught a 73mm snapper, caught 2 more snapper just size but had more than enough for a feed so they went back to fight another day.Didn't catch anything else today except snapper.

Will get some photo's up soon.

Last day fishing in Coral Bay

Well, we have bagged out and got to the point today that we had to release all bar the largest fish.

The trip has been nothing but sensational, great weather, plenty of fish. Lots to see on the water and a freezer full of fillets for home. the tax man has been around but not to the point where you want to scream. Some NW blowies, about half a dozen or so, so we just moved, plenty of good ground around so if you want to pick the GPS co-rods from the pics, help yourselves, nothing special at these spots other than fish were there on the day.

We have had the best weather that I can recall for some time with afternoon temps hitting 29 degrees, perfect for a swim and a bit of a bikini fest on the beach.

Andy, if you have half the weather that I have had you will enjoy yourself tremendously.

last couple of pics. I might put something together when I get home and put up all the pics for, those that want to see them.

Fishing in Coral Bay - again !

It was a bit breezy today so had a lazy breakfast and a swim before heading out in they arvo for some squid. Not many around but what are around are big and mean !

Chillie squid and chips for tea tonite !

Last trip for the winter

With my surgery for a double knee replacement scheduled for the Tuesday morning, Gail and I decided to take a chance and get out on a rainy Saturday which was to be my last trip for the winter. The recovery time for this type of surgery can be up to three months and I had to make the best of this last trip before the summer.

We launched in the rain from Woodman Point and made our way towards the southern end of Rottnest Island. By the time we reached Seaward Reef on Five Fathom Bank the visibility was less than ten meters due to the heavy rain and Gail was protesting as she could not see land. I assured her that the Raymarine chart plotter does not lie and that other than Seaward Reef itself we did not have any “known” obstacles until we reached our destination. Her obvious question was “what about the other boats” which fitted perfectly into my future justification for a sonar. This rain squall lasted for another 30 minutes – so did the squabble. None-the-less we arrived at our designated destination all intact and dropped the anchor as the clouds parted to allow the sun to beam out its morning greetings to a receptive fisherlady.

On Gail’s first drop she hooked up into the largest Scorpionfish that I have seen to date – caught on a 7/0 hooked, loaded with a block of Herring. Soon after I caught a keeper of a Snapper on a drifting Scalie where no weight was needed due to the lack of a current (see video footage for method). The next fish was a Samson Fish on light gear which gave Gail a good run and tested her ever improving angling skills. I managed to get some underwater footage of the fight on the GoPro.

During the next couple of hours Gail lost three good fish and I managed to land the biggest Cuttlefish that I have ever seen. On our way out we stopped off on a sandy patch in about 16m of water about 2km west of the northern Point of Garden Island and caught a number of Whiting to end off another memorable trip.

Please keep on posting your catches as I will be “living” on Fishwrecked and YouTube during my recovery period. Tight lines and safe angling.

Sons pb rainbow

Went for a drive with one of my sons today looking for new camping spots.

Had a great day in the bush, found a few new spots to take the whole family back to.

Spent some time chasing some pigs around and stopped for a quick fish where my son picked up a reasonable trout at 41cm.

Day 6 fishing in Coral Bay - pics added

Well another day in paradise. Headed out on the rising tide and back to favourite ground in 130m. As soon as we stopped and dropped lines fish were on, with Rosie's and solid Goldband coming up. We encouraged a couple of visitors as we had a 4 meter Tiger circling us for a while and after he nicked off we had a few Dollies turn up, not the ones with skirts but the fish !

We managed to invite a 1 meter plus on board and he is joining us for dinner tonight - yum.

As soon as the tide peaked the bite slowed and we moved back into 90 to chase some Reds. We landed in the Red kindergarten and started bringing up baby reds, all of which were returned but we managed to winkle out a couple of fish around the 3 - 4 kg mark to make up our emporer limit. That with the Goldband and a nice snub nosed cod all helped to fill up the fish box.

In just before Mahi Mahi who unloaded a boatload of Rubies and 8 Bar. Weather looking a but suss tomorrow so a lay day has been declared so the old boy can take a break. I'm fairly knackered, pulling fish up from 130m is bloody hard work especially when you have don it for 6 days in a row !

I'll post some more pics when my boy emails them through to me so they are all on his phone.

cheers

Garden Island , Cockburn Sound - Anything biting ? Saturday 01/08/15

 Hi all

Looking at putting in the boat for a much needed run tommorow Lunch time untill early evening - is there anything on the bite ?

Day 5 fishing in Coral Bay

Bugger it, typed out a half page and it bombed, not doing it again.

Here is a précis, went fishing, nice weather, bit windier, glassed off in the arvo, fish box of Goldband, Rosie's and Robbos. Do it again tomorrow.

cheers

Day 4 fishing in Coral Bay

Well it had to happen, perfect weather, no wind and the fish were biting. Headed out at 8.00am and started looking in 90m, landed a couple of Robbos and a Rankin with a small Red. Weather was too good so up and off to 130m chasing Goldband.

Went to my secret spot which is probably 10,000 other peoples secret spot and down went the lines. An hour later and it was bagged out time. Scored a nice Red, scarlet sea perch and a swag of Goldband and Rosie's.

Return trip sitting on 26 knots all the way and off the ramp with still a lot of boats still out making the best of the light winds and sunny weather.

Most fish were taken on fresh fish and squid. The Robbos definitely preferred squid but the others were all on fresh fish. Only lost a couple of fish to the taxman and they must have been big buggers because they took the whole rig!

Another nice day tomorrow so we will try and do it all again. Couple of pics below.

cheers

day 3 fishing in Coral Bay

day 3 was a bit of a loss, lots of Km's for very little return. Only put a few fish in the box with a solid baldie the best of a bad bunch. The northerly was pumping again, turning NW. and the fish went down, lots on the sounder but no takers. Better forecast tomorrow with the wind shifting so hopefully will fish better and I'll have something to say tomorrow.

cheers

Atlantic Canada 2015

My sister and I visited four provinces in Atlantic Canada between Jun 7 to 17. We spent most of our time exploring national parks. Although the primary focus of this trip wasn't about fishing, you won't catch me traveling without my gear!

I made a challenging but achievable goal to catch a new species from each province. In the end, I caught 7 new species and accomplished my goal!

Shorthorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius) - Species #464 (Newfoundland)

Rock Gunnel (Pholis gunnellus) - Species #465 (Newfoundland)

Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) - Species #466 (Prince Edward Island)

Blackspotted Stickleback (Gasterosteus wheatlandi) - Species #467 (Prince Edward Island)

Three-spined Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) - Species #468 (Prince Edward Island)

Atlantic Tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) - Species #469 (New Brunswick)

Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) - Species #470 (Nova Scotia)

There were so much spectacular scenery that there isn't enough room to share here. I'll share my favourite panoramic view with you, but I so encourage you to visit my blog posts to see the rest.

Two Rocks sunday - not many fish but heaps of whales

Left two rocks marina around midday and went straight out to a few spots in the 30's and 40's that have produced well in the past but only size fish landed was by the mrs - a 52cm pinkie. Plenty of whales around so ended up doing a bit of whale watching as the mrs had never seen one before. I saw  2 large whales breach in the distance about 2km away so went flat out to get to them. About half way there another whale that we hadnt seen surfaced just in front and to the right of us while we were stil going flat out, was a close call. I kind of assumed whales hear you coming and tend to stay down,  has anybody ever had a close call like that . Weve had them surface at the back of the boat right next to the drift anchor in the past but they went straight down and under the boat still shat myself though.

Tantabidi boat ramp conditions?

Hey guys, me and some mates will be up in Exmouth from August 5th for around 3 weeks,

will be launching from tantabidi boat ramp a lot of the time,

chasing a report on its conditions at the moment?

cheers for the help

day 2 fishing in Coral Bay

Well day 2 and still 20 plus knots backing off in the afternoon around 4.00pm

Cruised out around 10.30 and managed a couple of small Rankins. Wind turned North and the bite went off. Not much over the next couple of hours but when the wind dropped we managed a couple of fish. A nice Red, a pearly, a nice sized Cobia (released) and a NW snapper. went down well as a green curry fish !

Looking for the wind to drop tomorrow to get amongst them.

Dhufish - 25/7/15

Hi All

Went out yesterday for a bottom bash. Jeez it was rough in the morning! I even felt a little unwell for a while.

We found it hard going with plenty showing on the sounder, but only small nibbles. Ended up with a undersize dhu, 2 undersize breaksea, and brought home 1 dhu and 1 braksea which were size. Dhu went 61cm and was the first for my deckie! He was pumped.

Found on the inside edge of direction bank. How did everyone else go?

Day 1 fishing in Coral Bay

Well it was bloody cold last night and it was still cold this morning. The wind was making its presence felt with a orecast of 22 knots, so we took the easy street and organised our gear ready to hit the water in the arvo when the wind dropped.

So at 12.30 a real gentlemans hour out we went on flat seas with no swell. It was intended to be a shakedown so we only went out to the 70's - fish were steady and the boys picked up a couple of nice ones. Elliot first with a solid Rankin followed by Dillon with a nice Red. Unfortunately the skipper failed to put a notable fish up and had to settle for a few spanglies.

going to do a longer run tomorrow chasing Reds so will report further then

Ocean Reef Friday

I had the day off on friday so me and my house mate headed out fishing.

We stopped at 3 mile for 20 mins or so and grabbed some whiting for bait, then headed out about 8 miles to a spot my house mate had. He said he has fished there a few times and the ground looked good, but he's never actually caught anything there before. We had a couple of drifts with bait and nothing much was happening, so I dropped down a soft plastic and almost straight away hooked up on a dhu.

We kept on fishing the same spot for a while and caught 3 more undersized dhus on the soft plastic, 6 or 7 skippy, an undersized baldy, an undersized pinky, a tarwine, a sambo and a scorpion fish. It was constant action with the fish on the bite the whole time.

We eventually decided to head out further to direction bank and try another spot. On the way we saw a bunch of splashes on the surface which turned out to be a couple of humpback whales.

When we got to direction bank my mate caught a decent breaksea cod.

We moved to another spot and my mate caught a big sea sweep. Then on the next drift he hooked up on a decent sized pinky.

While we were sorting out the pinky my rod started going off, and it turned into another sized dhu.

We were bagged out after that, so we started heading home. It was an absolute glass off on the way back.

I don't think I've ever had a day out like that around Perth, the fish were on the bite the whole day and the weather was fantastic. Perfect day out.

Sambos all round

Took Brett (Terboz) out for a run on the Whaler and chucked a few jigs around with TimVB and my daughters boyfriend Ross. Had some fun with a few Sambos on PE2 and PE3.

Terboz on.

Ross on his first ever sambo, not bad on PE3.

Tims fish.

Mine on PE2.

Two Rocks Friday

Friday was looking good so Darren, Bear and myself headed out from Two Rocks to the 40's. Launched at 7am along with stacks of others and started out. The seas were a bit confused and choppy so we decided to stop at a little Snapper rock on the way out, just to let the wind die down a bit. Like most secret spots the drift on this rock is really short, ie a very small patch. First drift had all 3 of us onto snapper but all under size. Second drift and all on again with 1 size in the bunch.

It looked like the fish were on the chew so we didnt waste any more time on the snapper and headed out. First drift in the 40's landed our fist size Dhu and several undersize, a couple small snapper and a black ass that wasent much bigger than the hook he tried to swallow. Not wanting to pull another Dhuie from the same spot we moved to a rubble area that can produce some great KG's and in summer has some good Baldies. The KG's didnt put in an appearance but the Baldies were there and we had a great session with 2 good keepers coming onboard. I also picked up a cracking double header that had a lot of weight. I obvously didnt know it was a double until half way up when i lost most of the weight. When i got the just undersize Dhu to the surface the top hook was missing. The 50lb leader was rough as where it had snapped so in top fisherman form i'm calling it as a monster Dhu.. Lol

The esky was looking in good shape and the wind had died down so in the intrest of getting a smooth ride home we headed in. Another nice Pinkie would make the day perfect so we stopped at the snapper rock to give it one last drift. I'm glad we did.

One drift and two of us hooked up. Both nice fish but mine felt like a tank on the 30lb. Bear got in his 6kg Dhu pretty quick but my one took a while longer. Ended up being my PB Dhu of 12kg. Put Bears on the release weight and headed for home.

Great day out, good company, good fishing and a PB to boot.

Nice Dhufish

Nice Haul
