Fish casually cruising boatside

 Hello all.

I just wanted to share an experience i had this afternoon out of Onslow in 45m.

While jigging for some reefies, i saw a large black shadow cruising on my side of the boat, about 2m away, and at a guess, 1m below the surface.  At first i thought it was a shark but as the shadow came closer, the dorsal fin shape became clearer, and then i saw the bill, and yelled out to my skipper mate, f**k it's a marlin!!

As my mate jumped over to my side to confirm, i was frantically winding my jig in a hope to have something to throw in front of this casually cruising marlin (it was the only thing i could think of at the time), and unfortunately something struck about half way up.... damn it!  Up came an undersized spaniard, but by this stage tbe marlin had gone.

I've only ever raised a marlin, never hooked or landed one, hence my excitement in seeing one in the wild with my own eyes.  I'm still in awe at how it was just casually cruising by.

Maybe next time i'll be more preppared with a gar or skirt pre-rigged... if there is a next time.

Tom

Pink bash

Took young Wayne out. Topped of with 30 squid on way in. Great morning . 1 thing I have noticed over the last 30 years chasing pinks. No one gives a crap about anchoring on top of people. Just common courtesy leave enough room for people to cast , pretty simple. Will save arguements on water. Hasn't happens to me yet this year , but I have heard few reports last few days people being very game basically dropping anchor in others boats. There like blowies ATM . You will find people move soon as limit is caught 95 percent of time. Evenings and early morn not the only time you catch. Still tides high and low you will always do good.. doesn't matter about times. :).

Squid ink in the ice box

Got a couple of big squid today at tanta's and chucked em in a placcy bag then in the ice box. Next time I looked in the ice box it was full of ink. I was wondering if this has any effect on the eating quality of the fish also in the icebox. Cheers guys.

Sand bucket anchor

2 lost sarca anchors, chain and most of rope this year. Time to use a cordial container full of sand &/or concrete. In 6m this morning. If it wasn't so bloody cold, I could have just about dived for it today.

No snapper either and a fair bit of swell around Garden Island. A few Chinaman Cod and ?spotted brown? cod.

Whale watching

Went out for a fish today around the 3 mile reef and had a small whale calve i think swim straight towards the boat we quickly started the motor and he followed us for a bout 2 mile before swiming at the boat again is this unusal for whales to do this and has it hapoend to any oje before

Friday Funnys

Enjoy

anyone used the saltigaX 762s-2/4?

 Hi All,

i was after an opinion on this rod - from the specs it looks like it would suit what I want it for but I havent actually seen one in the flesh

more specifically I wanted to know what was the sweet spot in terms of cast weight and how much drag you would be comfortable fishing through it. I was after soemthing that could throw 35grams but fish PE3 to the max (about 7-8kgs) i realise i might be looking for a unicorn though!

its for throwing 7inch plastics on a 1/2oz jighead to the bigger kings around sydney harbour (maybe up to 1m or 8-9kgs or so) and also for a lighter setup for use on the rocks - for throwing smaller lures when the kings are shut down

any help would be much appreciated!

Freo Rail Bridge Rock Wall

Just giving people a heads up that we are currently building a rock armour wall to protect the rail bridge from stray ships hitting the bridge.

This wall will be on the Northern side of the rail bridge.

My concern is that even while we are working in our restricted area we have still had boats and even Kayaks enter the area. We are still placing rock and they are just below the surface at this stage. So if you enter the restricted area you will run aground. There will be special markets in place once finished but rocks will only protrude minimally during high tide once finished. So just be aware of this new obstacle.

On another note I'm thinking the potential for a really good fish attraction could be a huge bonus.

Tips on cooking up Amberjack and Shark Mackeral

 G'day all.

Was fishing down at the boat ramp here at Coral Bay this afternoon and someone in a fourby ute turned up and handed my sister in law's hubby 4 bags of cryovac'd fillets including Cobia, Amberjack, Shark Mackeral and shark of some description.

Have eaten Cobia recently and find it very tasty. Haven't tried Amberjack and not sure about the Shark Mackeral (the shark got handed out around the Bayview Caravan Park).

Has anyone got a good method for cooking up the Amberjack?

Is the Shark Mackeral worth keeping, or a good giveaway to backpackers :).

If the fellas that gave the fish to us are forum members, thanks a heap. They must have some good quality fillets in the freezer if they're giving these fillets away :).

2017 Perth Boat Show - Convention Centre and Eizabeth Quay

Actually looking forward to the boat show this year being held at the Convention Centre and Eizabeth Quay. For me it will be to easy to jump on the train and get off right where the show is being held. No more getting jammed up in Mandurah trying to get parking etc.

Does anyone know of any international sellers that are good to buy from. Specifically looking for rods, and trying to save some coin.

Thanks.

Sunday Pinks

Quick report from a solo session i had on Sunday, was watching the rough weather all week with the hope a window would open sunday for either a morning or arvo anchor and burley session but with the police putting out warnings along with other rescue groups on FB i was hesitant to say the least.

After a 530am wake up and Met eye weather check i decided to scramble and get out there for a look, sun up was due at 7 so to be heading through the islands just after 6 it was a bit safer to at least see the waves and swell coming, quite a few boats had already settled between the islands which i found strange as this is sometimes the most dangerous spot with the breaking water, so i continued to head out to the five using the channel markers as a line through the wash and was soon out to a clear spot and on anchor just before 7am with the burley flowing....no breaking water in sight but still letting out all 50m of anchor rope due the swell...3.5m at a guess, sun just rising, high tide and peek bite time due before 8am i was hoping for a good session.

Within half an hour a double hook up had me scrambling, landed one and lost one at the boat with the bottom hook gone, rebaited the first rod and drifted down another scalie...few more cubes in the water...another shake of the burley cage and i was soon fighting another powerful fish, netted this one successfully, quick spike and measure 83 & 84cm...yahoo!! job done.

Grabbed the lighter reel i had and tied on the first plastic to come to sight and threw it in to drift while i put the fish on ice and started to clean up...within a few minutes the shinmano elf 4000 started screaming...gezz they were hungry and putting up very good show in shallow water.....landed a few more for fun before heading back in by 9.

Wind had picked up a bit making the travel back through the islands hairy....had a good look for a minute or two...then went steady to sit safely at the back of set heading in.....was soon up the speed and heading home for Pancakes!!

Brave, crazy or stupid

I saw a boat, around 20 foot heading out from the Woodman Point Boat Ramp at around 6:30AM this morning. Hope he's back in by now - looked pretty horrible out there at 6:30AM never mind now. At least he had all the boat ramps plus the entire carpark to himself.

Grapple sinkers

Just thought I would put it out there if anyone wants to make some grapple sinkers I have cut my mould to fit wires and do so ( or snapper sinkers). If you have lead we can cut a deal , cook it up , have a beer, yarn and split some of the creations .  Some I made on sat attached

Boat/ship mods

My sincere sympathy to those who lost loved ones on the sinking of the prawn trawler out of Carnarvon last year. I am raising this subject with the hope that wee all can benefit from the inquest currently being held into the tragedy.

Has any body else been reading the reporting's of the coronial inquest into the sinking of the prawn trawler out of Carnarvon last year with the subsequent loss of 3 lives, I think the trawler was named "Returner"

From the reports in the "West" it is appearing that the removal of a lot of lead ballast put the ship at risk through loss of stability. This may have played a very significant part in the cause for this vessel to be lost.

The reason I am bringing this up as a form subject is this, how many times do we read on this site about members doing mods to their pride and joy and I wonder just how many of us really know to what extent we are altering the sea worthiness of our boats. I know I have made some mods, fitting fixed trim tabs and putting in another fuel tank without really sitting down and doing a bit of serious thought about the possible effects this may have on stability in heavy weather.

The trim tabs worked great in reasonable seas, however after coming home one time with a quite large following sea and imitating a Collins class sub doing an emergency dive I quickly changed them so that I can raise them to a neutral position when coming home with a following sea.

I think this tragedy should be a bit of a wake up call to all of us who do our own mods to boats to get some advice from the people who build boats for a living and are/should be well qualified to give their advice about our plans to alter our craft.

App developers test public drone shark patrols over Perth's beaches

Hi All.

I am more a spectator on this forum than a regular participant, but i thought i would share this with you.

I have been using this app for a while now, and used it this season for Salmon. I know lots of people are using drones to spot schools, but what i like about this is that you dont actually fly and land the drone. You create a mission, and then press the fly button (look for the school by moving the camera, but the drone carrys on doing the mission as requested). Off goes the drone on a patrol and once its finished it lands. I guess i like the idea of spotting a school of fish and being able to go and cast at it without worring about the drone (it will just land on its own, once it has finished). I have seen a few videos recently of guys using a trolling out rigger clips attached te the bottom of a drone, and all they do is pull it out when they are over the fish. I might have to see how they rig it up and give it a go.

Besides my personal use of the app, i would think it has various uses for guys on the forum. If you hunt, how much better would it be to send the drone up on an automated mission to spot the pig. Spot them and go, instead of leaving a mate with the drone, or having to land it and hope the animal has not moved.

The app has actually been produced to use as a shark patrol, which over this part of the world, will prove pretty usefull.

Best of all, its free...
