What combo
Submitted by mrwinta on Sat, 2011-01-08 13:00Hey guys... I have a mate who sometimes joins me on my boat and has recently discovered that he enjoys fishing.. He wants to buy his own rod and reel to bring along next time.. I thought I would put it to you to possibly recomend a combo.... he is a big 30 yr old lad so size and weight is no factor... he was thinking he would prefer an overhead and had a budget of $200-300. We usually mess arround in the 30-40m mark targeting- well anything- but would like to heavy enough to troll for tuna and maybe fight a sambo from time to time.... we are in Rocko too so shops in that area...
Cheers....

Kid Fishing
Submitted by Mick71 on Sat, 2011-01-08 11:01Hi People
I am after a nice place, north-side to take my little one fishing thats nice and sheltered and safe, don't need to know any of the "secret" spots, just a nice place that doesn't have too many blowies. She is very keen but just catches blowies, I usually go to Ocean Reef Marina, and when we release them she is always very concerned about how they are going to get back home!!!
Thanks
Mick
Her first fish, very sad, but still excited!

Team Daiwa Tournament Dealer
Submitted by Luke R on Sat, 2011-01-08 11:00Hey all
I am extremely excited to annouce that All Boat Business has now become a team daiwa tournament dealer. This a great move ahead for our forever growning tackle department. We can now offer you not only one of the best specilist ranges on lures and equipment in Perth but also some of the finest rod/reels available on the market today. As of mid next week i am expecting our tournament gear to arrive but i can now start taking orders and enquires for gear that you are after. If you are after prices please don't hesitate to send me an email or give us a phone call. Unfortunalty i can't offer a fishwrecked members discount on daiwa tournament products but have marked prices on ALL tournament gear extremely well. I have had quite a big call for high end gear over the past months and now i can supply our customers with what they are chasing.
Also to note If you have any tournament reels that need servicing we are able to send back to daiwa and get them poperly serviced by daiwa technicians, please call or email for a qoute.

wasted or not
Submitted by Patto 1 on Sat, 2011-01-08 07:11here is something that has bugged me for quite some time.every time i go into my local IGA store down south i always have a look in the fish section.I remember one particular day the bloke behind the counter was just about trying to give the fish away as it had obviously come to its used by date.just last week looking again was a decent dhu there that i reckon wold have gone 8 kilo and was looking like it was just about at its used by date .My question is what happens with all this fish they dont sell, is it turned into cat food ,fertilizer that i dont know ,but i think its a great waste of fish that must go on all over this state,i know by catching my own at least it dont get wasted.

Esperance Holidays
Submitted by Goodz on Fri, 2011-01-07 21:34Well I've just return from 10 days in Esperance with the family over the Christmas/New Year break and had a great time away from the city and it's summer heat. ( I did miss the chance of catching a dhuie though!)
After sourcing some local advice from Woody (Cheers mate!) I was excited to get out and find some ground and try to nail a few southern treats from the depths. Deckie duties were assigned to my father in law Nev and with the first forecast of lighter winds we were "out early and back in early" (another piece of helpful advice from Woody). First trip out we found some nice looking ground (a Cave?)

but we only managed a Queenie, Harlie and a big Sweep amongst the wrasse.

Next trip out a few days later to the same area produced another Queenie and a nice Nannygai (The target fish for our Esperance trip)

but nothing else to write home about.
The old Esperance wind blew for the next few days but we got 2 little trips out for some whiting, flathead, herring, slimey mackeral, and squid to get out fishing fix in. Other than the fishing we headed out 4wding a few times around Cape Le Grande checking out the awesome beaches down that way.

and also got a little surf in one day. The water down there was surprisingly quite warm!
The last day before leaving the forecast looked good for one last trip out deeper and I decided to head a little further out to go hunting for some Nannygai! After putting the boat in the water before 4am and being greeted by glassy conditions our spirits were high... until we got out past the first islands and the wind was blowing out there. First lump showed some good fish but we only landed a few small ones and after losing my fav shout stay to a large reefy lump we headed out a bit further in search of the Nannys! Next lump I sounded a good edge that showed a nice school of fish sitting on the top edge and the call was Nannygai... it was first drop and we were into fish. No Nannys yet but I landed a nice double of BA's and a nice Queenie to Nev.

We spent the next hour or 2 drifting the same spot and finally got into the Nannygai landing 8, along with 6 Black ass, 4 Queenies, a Harlie, Foxfish, Skippy. It was great fishing even if nothing was of a big size, just good to get into some quality fish. Enough to actually take a few fillets home with us even!

Overall we had a great time down in Esperance, just wish the wind had of been slightly lighter so we could have gotten out further a few times but it was still good. Thanks again to Woody for the advice!

Demersal Jig Choices
Submitted by Ryno13 on Fri, 2011-01-07 10:51Hey guys,
Have used bait for most of my time fishing for demersals, but lately have been trying some different techniques and have landed a few Dhu's etc, on the McArthy soft plastics. Would now like to try some jigging for demersals - mainly Dhu's - but was wondering which jigs to use (Have heard good reports on the Daiwa Pirates?). Has anyone had recent success with particular jigs? Any suggestions on brands, weight and colours would be greatly appreciated. We mostly fish in 30-45m of water.
Cheers,
Ryan.

Proud to be Aussie
Submitted by Stoinka on Fri, 2011-01-07 09:27Copper Wire................
After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the Brit's, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British".
One week later, the state's Dept of Minerals and Energy in Western Australia, reported the following:
After digging as deep as 30 feet in Western Australia's Pilbara region, Jack Lucknow, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely Bugga all
Jack has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless."
Just makes you bloody proud to be Australian.

first demearsal on a jig
Submitted by ricey on Thu, 2011-01-06 23:16went out Tuesday from jurien with Whitey, keen to land a big one and also to try out some demearsal jigging. I started off with bait and landed a foxfish, and then a baldie and a wrasse (yay). with a fish in the esky (the baldie) i switched over to the jig. Chose a 150g daiwa pirates on my twinpower 4000 with 30lb braid on a 6-10 kg penn cheapy K mart rod.
I tried jigging this a variety of ways attached from the end for no result (Honsu had jigged a 10 kg dhui earlier on a different style fluttering knife jig earlier). A guy suggested i tie in the middle, that is what they did in Darwin where he was from. So i tried that and automatically it fluttered a lot more. I just yo-yoed it up and down a few winds and dropped down again. Within ten minutes the rod buckled and could fell some very strong surges. Tried to adjust drag right and held on and started getting some line back (a few others on jigs hooked up at same time). Within 5- 10 minutes had boated my biggest dhufish to date at 89 cm and 12kg. Was very stoked!
Was very relieved to land this fish as on inspection both hooks were close to being straightened. maybe in future i would use stronger hooks?
Very excited I continued with my new found faith in jigs and attached a skirt from another pirate onto the 150g jig. I came up very tight again soon after and having huge head shakes questioned whether this was a dhufish, thinking maybe a samson fish. However took it very careful as had already taken my fish for the day and was stoked to land gently another 9 kg 80 cm dhufish which was successfully released.
Am convinced of the effectiveness of jigs (11 size dhufish boated, mainly about 8 - 10 kg, one or two just sized) and two smaller dhufish landed on the day. i think only three (two small and one abouth 8kg) landed on bait only, despite at about half of boat using bait. Many sargeant baker landed too on the jigs (of many different sorts).
I did note a lack of snapper caught , and breaksea (several) and baldies (three of the four) went to bait, though honsu caught by far the largest baldie on a jig.
Several amberjack and sambos caught too and a particularly impressive catch was Honsu landing a 23kg yellow tail king fish on light gear (about PE2) which was impressive.
Bring on some more jigging!

shark bay in april
Submitted by spanishmackeral on Thu, 2011-01-06 16:45hey fellas
goin up to shark bay in april with the rents and were staying at a rental home in denham for 2 weeks (anyone else goin up this time?)
keen to get into some BIG mackies, which is probably gonna mean taking the boat (preferred than off rocks) to steep point. (are sails common at the point or are they hard to entice? it'd be a good exp to get one)
trouble is weve got a trailcraft freestyle 485 with a 120 litre tank and a merc 75hp 2 stroke with an ss prop (if that makes a difference) which dad reckons will do 1 litre per km and its a 100km round trip (not including trolling). wanted to know if we'd make it there and back with some trolling in between (will use livies if we have to)
has anyone had any experience with that are up there as i have a lot more to ask (eg do you go close to the cliffs or is it too dangerous/busy with rock fisherman?)
if this is too far are there any spots in denham or mia (we will def be going there on the bad days) that are better or just as good as the point
p.s. ive chucked in some pics to make it worth the read, from 09
also i hope i havent missed anything as this is the second time ive wrote this as it didnt post before!
pps or is it pss? met up with a guy named JOHN 2 years ago (about april) and keen to see him again as he said he was an annual up there! anyone know john?
thanks rob
