Fishy find lands angler in strife
Chris Thomson May 22, 2009 - 9:22AM
A tipoff has landed an Alexander Heights fisherman in hot water, after he was allegedly caught red-handed with 42 undersize pink snapper.
Department of Fisheries officers said the man had a haul of 69 fish in total when they searched his boat at Hillarys Boat Harbour on May 13.
Departmental compliance manager Todd A'Vard said his colleagues seized 42 undersize pink snapper, a tiny tarwhine and a scrawny skippy.
"The average size of the undersize pink snapper seized is 223 millimetres," Mr A'Vard said.
"The minimum legal size for pink snapper, taken south of Lancelin, is 450 millimetres.
"Pink snapper is one of the high risk species and the daily bag limit is two per fisher."
Mr A'Vard said the rules were in place to ensure the sustainability of fin-fish stocks.
"The Fisheries and Marine Officers were not only shocked to find one person with so many fish, they were also concerned to see so many undersize fish in the haul," he said.
"This matter will proceed to prosecution and we are in the process of establishing the charges that will be issued against the fisher.
"He is likely to face charges for breaching bag limit rules as well as taking undersize fish, which each have potential fines of up to $5000."
If the fisherman is found guilty, he will automatically face an additional mandatory penalty, which could be well over $6000, if the magistrate were to choose the option of assigning the penalty on a per-fish basis.
"The mandatory penalty is 10 times the prescribed value of the fish by number or weight," Mr A'Vard explained.
"In this case, each of the 42 undersize snapper is valued at $15 per fish, tarwhine have a prescribed value of $2 per fish and skippy a prescribed value of $1 per fish."- 28 comments

Submitted by Roger Knife on Thu, 2009-05-21 18:02Hey guys and gals
As most of you know I am coming over in 8 weeks for a holiday and a fish. Any advice on lures or spinners I could take for chucking off beaches and piers. I will have a medium weight spinning rod that will cast about 90 grams/4 oz? Pictures would be good as well as i dont know all of the names of the different lures. Cheers fellas

Favourite reel
Submitted by catchalittle on Wed, 2009-05-20 22:23Thought I would post up another topic what is your favourite reel,I know everyone has different budgets on what they can afford so does not matter if it is a Kmart special or top of the range each to their own.Plus a few reasons why it is your favourite
Mine would be my Saltiga 6500 Dogfight
I can use it for popper fishing
bottom bouncing,
jigging
and trolling
it is built strong, has been given some punishment and not let me down where as a few others that I own have had to be repaired or retired,I have used it all over the world in different fishing enviroments both boat and landbased,I have three spare spools for it so I can run different line class's
Will start another topic on your favourite rod

NEATFish now online
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2009-05-20 18:15Recfish Australia is proud to announce the live release of the interactive website www.neatfish.com where organisers of fishing tournaments can complete the NEATFish environmental standard online. NEATFish (National Environmental Assessment of Tournament Fishing) is the world’s first environmental standard designed specifically for fishing tournaments. NEATFish is a voluntary industry standard developed by the recreational fishing industry for the industry.
The NEATFish Standard uses a questionnaire which measures a tournament’s environmental, social and economic performance and rates them using a 1 to 5 star rating system. The Standard and website were both developed by Recfish Australia with funding from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation after consultation with fishing tournament organisers, government authorities, environmental groups, accreditation bodies, insurers and representatives of the fishing tackle industry.
Len Olyott, CEO of Recfish Australia, says the long awaited release of the website will improve the accessibility of the standard and make the process of certification of fishing tournaments under the NEATFish standard simple and user friendly. “The best thing about the www.neatfish.com website is that online membership is free of charge and provides all tournament organisers with the necessary tools to undertake a NEATFish assessment. Full accreditation under the standard can be achieved in 5 easy steps. Once the organiser has completed the free initial assessment, they know how their tournament rates and can then choose to apply for official recognition of their rating by submitting their results for approval. Tournaments approved under the standard obtain an official NEATFish Certificate after paying an annual registration fee ($95.00+ GST), after which they are publicly listed on the website with other approved tournaments.
Tournaments which undertake the NEATFish process are better able to demonstrate their environmental, social and economic credentials to the wider community. Organisers who run NEATFish accredited tournaments report that they are better placed when dealing with government authorities, media and environmental groups on a range of issues related to their tournament activities. Discounts on public liability insurance are also available for accredited tournament organisers. The www.neatfish.com website also provides opportunities for sponsors to contact organisers of accredited tournaments, and vice versa, to develop relationships that are beneficial to both parties.

End of season "Slatty Craypot " Special!
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2009-05-20 11:32Well its that time again when the end of the season is near and we need to clear out our remaining "slattys"
Our slattys are made by an Ex commercial crayfisherman and are well built. They are jarrh frame and pine slats so theyt catch well on whites & reds. The locally made slattys normally sell for $140 but we have limited numbers left and clearing them at $115
Nows a good time to buy and save some money. You can use them now or leave outside to soak for next season.......call #9337 5682 or PM for more info!

Winter Fishing
Submitted by mako magic on Wed, 2009-05-20 09:36Well with the cooler and wetter weather fast approaching i thought i would see who still fishes and what do they fish for.
Personally im not one for going out in the wind and rain and sit down the rocks for snapper or anything, i like my creature comforts, but it can be very rewarding and the next couple of days are going to be the first chance for the snapper fishermen to hopefully get into a few.
Best part of this time of the year is generally we can get some better offshore weather so shortly should start taking the new boat offshore from perth and getting stuck into a few good fish.

Bycatch
Submitted by 7739ian on Wed, 2009-05-20 07:50I have been watching an interesting series on SBS on Wednesday nights called "Trawlermen" which is basically about the boats fishing out of English ports. What i find interesting - and somewhat disturbing is the massive amount of bycatch that goes overboard because the boat has no quota for the discarded catch. This comes after reading a book by a guy called Redmond O'Hanlon called "Trawler" in which he goes to sea with one of the English fishing fleet. Bycatch is enormous in his description of the operation, the discard process being overseen by an onboard fisheries officer. I realise that there are release devices used but these appear unable to do much given the amount thrown back. I hear the bycatch being referred to as Biomass - all goes back into the food chain etc etc - it should be utilised for people, not flying rats. Obviously the professional fishing industry in Australia has the same issues - it would be interesting to know how much they waste - and to me it is waste. The general public hear a lot about recreational fishers that plunder stocks - isn't this a bit of the same on a far bigger scale? I would appreciate some enlightenment from people such as Adam, Damo6230, Colin Hay and all the others who regulary post in an informed way on the bigger issues due to their professions or deep interest.

Intro
Submitted by Wrassassin on Tue, 2009-05-19 17:54

G'day guy's
Just wanted to say hi, i've been a lurker for a bit now and think the site is great.
I've just moved down from port hedland to perth after 5 years so the fishing is going to be a struggle!
I will prob ask some questions that no doubt have been asked before so sorry in advance.
I don't know anyone who fishes down here either so i'll generally always have a free spot on my boat for those willing to chip in.
I live in landsdale and went out to rotto on the weekend with the wife and kids we had a ball on the salmon but the bottom fishing left a bit to be desired but i have to start somewhere!
Hope the pics are the right size.
Cheers
Ryan

LB squidding 101
Submitted by eddie on Tue, 2009-05-19 17:29G'day all! Your local WA fishing newbie checking in for more advice!
Well the wife and I have developed a real taste for Calamari, so I thought I'd ask a few questions.
I'd like any and all tips you have on LB gear and tactics.
What am I looking for as far as squiddy habitat when LB? If anyone wants to share good spots NOR, pm me, but I don't expect that. Just really wanting to get into the action.
Any tips on skinning them? I've done it once, but didn't have much idea what I was doing.
Also, is there a minimum size limit on squid? Yesterday I walked the inner wall of Hillary's casting a small jig and caught 3 small squid in about 20minutes. I threw them back bc I wasn't sure if I could keep them. lucky little buggers!
anyway, all your tips and advice welcome! Who knows, if your advice pays off, I might just show up at your door with some complimentary squid rings!

Submitted by catchalittle on Tue, 2009-05-19 13:46Was speaking with a couple of blokes that I work with who are both avid fishermen, one is strictly a catch and release as he does not like to eat fish, the other is like me loves the thrill of the catch and fish's for a feed. Each to their own I suppose. So the question is which one are you just thought tyhis would be an interesting topic to get other peoples perspective.
