Drift baiting - help please
Submitted by Hayzy on Sat, 2009-05-09 15:49Hi all,
Im just after some advice / tips re-driftbaiting in 30 - 40m.
I have recently been experimenting with driftbaiting and found that my hookup rate (when compared with bottom bashers on the boat) has dramatically increased. My problem is, I seem to drop the fish once i have them about half way up!!!!! Very frustrating when you know a quality fish is on the other end.
Anyway, I have tried a couple of different techniques including, both hard and loose drag settings, striking vs freespooling and then setting the hook. I am very conscious of highpointing the rod, so I dont think this is the problem. ANyway, any tips would be appreciated. I know there is some great info on the site already (which is my main reason for recently joining fishwrecked), but nothing seemed to answer my specific question.
In terms of equipment, I generally use a spinning outfit that comprises a spheros 8000, 30lb fireline and matched wih a 6'6 Livefibre rod. Would an overhead (Saltiga 40 - 50lb braid) be the better outfit to use or is this too heavy? My rig is usually two snelled Owner 7/0 with a running bean sinker (size dependent on drift) to the top hook. Circle hooks? Bait is usually whole squid.
Not sure if i am doing something wrong, or have just been bloody unlucky up until now. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hayzy.

Man Falls into water with shark
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Sat, 2009-05-09 12:36Man falls into water with shark
Posted 48 minutes ago
A man has had a lucky escape after a shark attacked his dinghy at Point Perron, south of Perth.
It is understood the shark bit the boat's outboard motor, and as the man tried to swat it away with an oar he fell into the water.
Police say the man escaped this morning's incident without injury.

travel rod
Submitted by kane on Sat, 2009-05-09 06:10Hi
This ones mainly to the sponsors,
After my recent success with a hand line and home made popper with the dolphin fish, fishing from the oil rig i work on im keen to get a rod out here and cast some decent poppers. The problem is i have to be able to fit the rod in my bag to put it on the helicopter to get it to work.
I have found this rod, but it isnt sold in Australia, well it might be but i cant find it anywhere.
If you guys can supply me with this rod or something similar please let me know, otherwise Ill have to send my cash over to the poms and id rather keep it here in aus if possible.
Ill be using 15kg line with probably something in the region of 40 - 50kg leader so i can skull drag the fish the 100 foot air gap from the water up to the main deck of the rig.
Anyway any help will be greatly appreciated,
Kane

Coral Bay
Submitted by keithsoutar on Fri, 2009-05-08 20:37New to this website and new to fishing!
Got bitten by the bug when up in Exmouth with work and for the last six months have been getting to grips with shore based fishing in Perth with limited success, but still enjoyable. Certainly aint the same as fishing off a boat on the North West Shelf, but never mind.
Looking for some advice on good spots in Coral Bay (really around there as I know it is a sanctuary zone) & Exmouth (family holiday coming up in a few weeks) - any advice appreciated.
I am mainly fishing with lures and poppers, but should I try bait up there? What seems to be more successful in anyones opinion?
Cheers for any advice
Keith

Car / Ute Under $2500
Submitted by Matt T on Fri, 2009-05-08 17:13Hey fellas - seen a few similar threads lately, but though I would throw it out there for everyone's input... I need to get a cheap vehicle capable of towing my 17' Bayliner. I never really go off road so it would mainly be city / freo ramps adn something with a back seat would be good. Unfortunately the budget is pretty tight and I've only got about $2500 to spend. Any ideas would be great....

Sea anchor drift setup
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2009-05-08 15:22Hi guys,
Is there any trick to drifting on a sea anchor? - can you set it up to control the drift angle of the boat? Any ideas on how much rope it needs on? Does it need a swivel to stop the rope tangling?
How do I attach it as I only have a front rail and 2 back bollards? Boat is 19 ft fibreglass half cabin.

shark ID
Submitted by CURT on Thu, 2009-05-07 20:56HEY FELLAS
a while ago i caught a 5 ft shark off warnbro beach whilst tailor fishing (suprising i know!!). it had black tips on its dorsal and tail fins and therefore i thought it was obviously a black tip reef shark, untill the other day when i was looking through an ID book i saw a "long nosed grey shark" its description fit my shark quite closely but im not too sure. it did have quite a long nose and now i think of it BTRsharks are more of a northern species, so if anyone has any suggestions, dont hesitate.

Organising your tackle.
Submitted by bradizle on Thu, 2009-05-07 17:53Hey guys just wondering how you guys organise yourself when heading out on the boat or landbased?
I dont like storing hooks in tackleboxes, i find that they rust up pretty quick so I just leave them in the original packets and chuck them a sandwich bag full... Not easy to find what your looking for tho!
Can anyone recommend and tackle bags two fit a couple of boxes and some jigs / poppers or a method that works for you organising your tackle? e.g squid jigs, hooks , poppers etc etc?
cheers, Brad

Challengers??
Submitted by Blake.T. on Thu, 2009-05-07 15:24Hey guys, following on from the first car advice thread.
Whats everyones opinions on the 1998 Mistubishi Challengers? I am looking at one that has done 200000km, on gas, manual.
It will mainly be a 4wd to get down on the beach to fishing spots like whitehills, wagoe etc. , towing a small 4.35m boat around (occasional trips north), launching/retrieving at places like tantabiddi etc.
What does everyone think? He’s asking $8000
thanks

Garden Island restrictions
Submitted by Sekans on Thu, 2009-05-07 14:58How close are you allowed to take your boat to Garden Island. Being a naval base I assume there are restricted areas. Does anyone know of any sites that show the restricted areas?
I'm interested in fishing the eastern side of the island. Any information on what species I could realistically expect to catch would also be appreciated.
Thanks.

London Aquarium
Submitted by Roger Knife on Tue, 2009-05-05 00:25Alright lads and lasses
Looks like theres been some more good trips over the last few days, with some good fish getting caught. Unfortunately i've not been out due to time. BUT this long weekend I have been to London and took the opportunity to dive in the aquarium. Not always sure on how good they are for the bigger fish, but I was impressed with this one and the conditions of the majority of the fish. The shark tanks were big although they could always be bigger, but on the whole it was a good attraction and well worth the visit if your over. Here are a few piccys.
Cheers Rog
The piranha tank looked pretty good for a reconstruction.
Gt's and smaller trevs shoaling up!
Turtle swimming over a fake whale skeleton!
Redtailed catfish...awesome fish
Mixed reef community
Lionfish
Sand Tiger Sharks in with the GT's

FLATROCK "SHARKATHON"
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-05-04 09:06AFTER receiving “get out of jail passes” from our wives, Sherbs and I decided to head up to Flatrock on Saturday night for an allnighter in the hope that we might be able to find some elusive mulloway.
With the trusty Andrew at the wheel, we arrived at Flat Rock at around 8 pm with a half moon rising and a light south wester blowing.
Andrew maneuvered us to our chosen location, a spot we had fished previously where a reef sits about 40 metres off the shore and nice gutter runs between the beach and the reef.
Sherbs and I soon had our lines in the water and within minutes we were hooked up. Whatever was on our lines had a lot of weight behind them and were pulling hard in the fast travelling current and the small shore dump.
Man, seaweed can sure pull hard - especially when there is at least 10 kilos of it. Sherbs hard fighting lump soon snapped his braid and I then heroically fought mine collection to the shore. Half an hour of de-weeding later, I finally had my rig back.
Deciding this wasn’t looking too good, we headed back up to the beach to Flat Rock itself in the hope that it would be clear of weed.
A few test casts with just a sinker on the line confirmed this was the case and we re-setup camp and soon had our lines in the water.
While the Flat Rock is a good fish attractant, it does make night fishing a little difficult as you have to make your way across the rocky reef in water up to waste deep to ensure your cast takes your bait away from the reef edge.
Eventually we worked out a system and were able to set ourselves up to that we could sit back in the comfort of some fold-up chairs, drink a few beers and fish at the same time.
Not too long after we got underway Sherbs had some movement on his bait which had all the hallmarks of a mulloway enquiry. Playing the patient game he waited till the weight came on set the hook. What seemed like a nice mulloway began pulling away from the reef with that telltale paddle tail action.
After a solid fight Sherbs had the fish at the edge of the reef where it unfortunately managed to hook itself up and then free itself. The disappointment was overcome with the thought that if there was one there must be more.
So we settled down to fish out the night confident we were in for some action.
After a few more hours of soaking mulies and squid baits, we finally had another hit and Sherbs soon had a small Port Jackson shark on the shore and then on its way back out to sea.
That small bit of action rejuvenated our efforts and we sent out some more baits. However, the action certainly wasn’t thick and fast and with a nice fire burning the temptation to pull out our swags and put our heads down until the morning was growing very tempting. Andrew had already succumbed and he looked pretty comfortable all wrapped up in sleeping bags in the front of the car while we froze out butts off in wet clothes.
However we decided to persevere and I soon had nice little banjo shark which was soon back out across the reef.
Another hour or so and I felt a decent bit of weight on my line which I was thinking may have been another big clump of weed. It turned out to be a decent sized Wobbegong which we decided to keep.

That kept our heads up for awhile longer and Sherbs managed to hook and land the biggest Port Jackson I have ever seen.

With only an hour or two until sunrise we settled down in out chairs with the hope that the action might hot up.
In fact it got even colder and our baits failed to attract any interest. Sherbs managed to keep his eyes open somehow, but I dozed off only to be awoke by a wave washing around my feet.
Eventually the sun came up and we were refreshened by a beautiful morning.
Unfortunately it was too nice with the sea flattening off with a building offshore breeze.
Sherb’s work mate Doug arrived and we changed up rigs to see if there were any tailor, herring or whiting around.
Sherbs managed a double header of whiting, but the flat conditions were definately not in our favour and after a 14 hour fishathon we decided that was enough and to head back to your warm homes.
While we didn’t end up with the catch we had hoped for, it was a great night out with a great mate and for two old buggers we did pretty well to stick it out in pretty crappy conditions.

A Session with Uncle Stu
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sun, 2009-05-03 19:39Stu invited me to join him for a weekend away at his humble retreat in the hope that it would be third time lucky to catch an elusive Salmon. Time was on my side so I gratefully accepted. Stu had also invited a young Irish fella who he has a work association with. The fella is named Steve and I will refer to him as "Irish" from here on in.
Stu and Irish picked me up from work at 4PM Friday. I parked my car up in the warehouse and we were off! Much to the disatisfaction of Stu we had the tops off the Crownies before he even got out of the car park at my place of work.
An nice trip down. A few beers by the fire and it was time for bed. While we were chatting I nominated 7am as my first Salmon in the morning.
We rose early for usual Stu full breakfast and then it was off for the long trek to Windy Harbour. When we arrived the conditions were perfect with a moderate swell and offshore breeze. I almost wanted to go surfing. After studying the beach we decided to walk some 500 meters to a hole that showed some promise. It took me a while to recover from the walk and set up my two rods. My 12 footer with Mullies and my 9 foot graphite for lures.
It was 7:08am when my first bait went in the water and at 7:10am I had my first strike!!!! Dancing fish! WOW everyone was excited. A nice Salmon was landed as per photo.
An hour later I hooked another beauty! Stu being Stu whispered to me that Irish had never caught a decent fish so I gladly offered my rod to him to finish off the landing process. Well done Irish! Photos show results.
Stu then got some action and landed a nice Salmon. Irish then did the real thing and hooked and landed a fish of his own. I was on again also.
All in all, 5 fish landed, one decided to leave me before I could grab it, and 1 or 2 were released. Nice session!
Back to the shack and a few too many beers. I decided, after much pushing from Stu, to cook a Salmon pie. See pictures. The pie turned out great other than one small issue. The fillets had some sand in them................ Pie tasted great but there was a lot of grinding happening. Anyway, the Kookaburras loved it the next morning.
Speaking of the next morning, it was too far to the beach so we headed out to some of Stus favourite river spots. While the boys played I tossed a few lures in the creek and guess what? Redffin were around. It was some fun.
We then went back and did all the chores through lack of female help and headed back to Perth.
Stu; thanks mate and Irish; thanks also.
I promissed Stu a weekend at S-bends as a payment for such a fine weekend.
I hope you enjoy the pics and sorry it took a while to polish up this report.
