Logging in to Sea Rescue
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2009-04-19 17:56When logging on to sea rescue it pays to give a reasonable location of where you will be fishing,eg---12 nm on 240deg,not as most give at present.
Here in Carnarvon we quite often get someone logging in as going to the "islands"
Great, there are three islands covering 30nm,then there is inside the islands, outside the islands. If a boat goes missing where do we go to begin our search, stand facing the water, point an arm directly out to sea, spread the fingers on one hand and take a guess which one to use as a beginning.I had a a boat call up to extend his ETA by 1.5 hours,he did a relay to his fishing mate who was behind the island and out of coverage to see if he wanted to extend as well. When I looked at the sheet he had logged in as going to fish 25miles north east of his present location,I asked him where he was and he said exactly where I thought he was.
Had something happened and if I hadn't updated his location and he had gone missing the first place we start looking is the his last known position, some 25 miles away.It would have taken some 12 hours into the search to even get somewhere near him---too late if he is in the drink.
If for some reason you change your position by more that 2-4nm,give us a call and update,it only takes a few words on the log sheet and 30 seconds by radio and if you're one of those secretive bloke who are paranoid of someone finding your spot use your phone,We usually have heaps of good fishing spots and are not interested in stealing others that we probably have already.
Doing these little things can literally mean life or death, yours or one of the people who has to try to find you

Flat Rock Overnighter
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sun, 2009-04-19 09:42It seems there is some interest in an overnighter so some of the boys can let off a little steam. This Friday looks like it could work with fine weather predicted and easterly winds.
I know Uncle Stu is keen. Is anyone else interested? Does Friday night work? It does for me because it gets me home for Saturday lunchtime in time to win back some brownie points.
Let me know what you think. I we go ahead we need to organise a fire etc..

Morning Fish April 18 2009
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sat, 2009-04-18 19:27Ventured out to Flatrock again this morning to de-stress after a long week. I met up with Sherbs, Uncle Stu and Andy just on daybreak. Great company guys. I look forward to further expeditions.
Conditions were pretty perfect and we burley'd up with the controvercial SPESS brew for what looks like chook pellets but probably tastes far worse. LOL. Herring came on the bite immediatly and I had 2 or 3 in the bucket before the others even got a line in the water. Everyone got into the action (except Andy of course). No sign of anything else so I tried some popping and slicing for a while. No results there so back to feeding Herring.
Sherbs managed a nice Flathead. That was a nice suprise. Herring getting reeled in one after the other. The guys packed up a bit after 9am and we divided the Herring into large and small. Large for a feed and small for Andy's Exmouth trip.
All in all a great morning. Thanks guys.
Sorry about the quality of the pics. It's about setting the scene more than anything.

Fisheries bust
Submitted by Mick on Sat, 2009-04-18 13:48G'day guys
Just heard that someone local got caught with 200kg of mackie fillets by fisheries. All packaged up and ready to go. Assuming its a well known pilferer thats had a run in with fisheries on several occasions and well known by most up here to not do the right thing. Be very interested to see what sort of fine would be handed down for such an offence. What is it with these people? Also over the Easter break alot of the pro pots had been pulled with several "calling cards" of empty tinnies. What the ? Mackies have been hot as with everyone getting in on the action with plenty of tuna to boot.
Cheers Mick

Submitted by Bodie on Fri, 2009-04-17 09:26Just wondering if you guys could give me a little info on targeting them?
Possibly heading out to the FADS tomorrow, but not chase dthem before?
Are they best targeted on Lures?? Haclo 2+m ones?
Also considering using snapbacks as well?
Are they any good on the chew? or primarily just a sports fish?
Thanks

How many Rods do you take out?
Submitted by johno on Fri, 2009-04-17 07:08Hi All
Just wondering what is common between fisho's when going fishing. When I go out in metro waters I always have 4 rods for myself and 2 for my partner so when you see the boat at the latching ramp you see quite a few rods on the rocket launcher
but seriously I have a mixed of braid to mono with different line weights etc.., rods and reels from light action, trolling and jigging (ie. hate chasing fish with oversize tackle... like a whitting on a jigstick lol) Call me keen or a mad fisho but I believe in having a selection of rods to fish with and of course only the best quality too.
which hurts the pocket, but I am over doing it? , when going north will that is another story
What do you do?
Cheers

Something to watch out for
Submitted by catchalittle on Thu, 2009-04-16 23:30
Tackle theft rife in Victoria
Victorian Police are on the lookout for tackle thieves following a spate of recent robberies in the state.
In the past four months Victorian tackle stores have suffered eight break-ins with the offenders targeting high value fishing reels from Daiwa, Shimano and Penn. A full count of the number of reels stolen has not been established, but it is believed to be in the vicinity of 400. The police believe these thefts are being done to order, but, also that the offenders must have somewhere that they are disposing of these items. As a note, none of the reels are in boxes, they have all been stolen out of the display cabinets from inside the stores.
Either a very organised crew of boys and girls or some very dumb shop owners that are not watching out, some of the reels they showed pics of were very nice reels so if you get offered a cheap reel chances are they may have come from this
Nanga Station
Submitted by Neander on Thu, 2009-04-16 21:45Has anyone stayed or fished nanga station?
I am thinking of changing my first leg to further north instead of Kalbari and looking at somewhere to camp for a few day.

Cape Arid National Park
Submitted by Bluetonic on Thu, 2009-04-16 20:30Well did the trip to the Cape Arid National Park with Damo6230 over the Easter break. (2 days driving, 2 days fishing) Found plenty of beaches and rocky headlands to fish between Poison Creek and Israelite Bay with a good variety of fish on offer. As expected there were plenty of resident Salmon and Herring with some real thumper Salmon mixed in. We also got bit off by some huge Sharks and I lost a Mulloway I estimated to be in the 30kg range. (I did get to see it and it was a horse of a fish) We heard rumours of a beach where Pink Snapper are caught regularly and thought it was just fishing tales until people in the camp site along from us confirmed it with 5 fish all over 7kg caught! Hence to say, we now know the spot and are planning our next trip.
If anyone ever wants to know more about the area, drop us a PM.

HAVING A BALL CATCHING BAIT
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-04-16 10:24Sherbs and I took young Andrew down to a local marina chasing some whiting to add to Andrew’s growing bait collection for Exmouth.
We arrived just before sunset to find the waters where we were fishing were alive with bait fish.
It wasn’t long before that cagey tailor speciliast Sherbs was hooked up to the first of many chopper tailors using his favourite bluebait casting set-up.
Trying a different technique, Andrew and I eventually atracted some school whiting to our baits and we had a nice little session pulling in some ideal bait-sized fish.
I managed to land some bonus captures, with my whiting rig accounting for two small pinkies.
It was a fantastic night, with perfect weather conditions and heaps of action to keep us busy on the extra light gear we were using.
Some of the interesting events to occur during the evening were:
• A number of solid bites which resulted in our lines being run straight into a large snag.
• The massive number of small blue manna crabs that were an absolute pest.
Another highlight was Sherbs giving some youngsters visiting from overseas a lesson in landbased baitcast fishing for tailor. It is people like Steve who help show the joy of fishing to novices that keep our great sport growing.
I hope to be able to post up a few pics later on.
All the best, Colin Hay

Electronic almanac/fishing log
Submitted by mattyoga on Thu, 2009-04-16 09:20Does anyone know where I can get electronic versions of:
1) WA tides
2) lunar cycles (either just highs and lows or continuous trend)
3) almanac peak times and days
4) historical wind data log
4) historical swell data log
I want to import them into excel and create an electronic logbook that cross references info against this data.
Or does anyone know of software that does most of this?
Cheers

Boat Canopy Clears- can you recommend anyone??
Submitted by hunterdive on Wed, 2009-04-15 22:32hi there all.
I need to get some canvas/ clear plastic work done on my boat in a real hurry. I've recently had a new higher bow rail fitted and I would like to get some clears fitted from the gunwales to the rail to stop that annoying spray you get in a tinny. I head North the end of next week, so if anyone could recommend somewhere, it would be appreciated. It shouldn't be a big job.
thanks guys
