Finally got one of these "Barrel" fish...Easy as hey?!
Submitted by Wojieboy on Thu, 2018-09-27 20:164 times out fishing in the "Barrel"...everything A1- Time, tide, bait, location (It is in a barrel- easy hey?!) We were the first ones there today- 0430am.
TODAY, we finally cracked it.
Mate Matt snapped a 8/0 hook (Gamakatsu) to drop a decent fish. Next hookup was mine (of course- on the small gear) pulled the hooks late in the piece (After all other lines were cleared)
Next hookup was Matt again. Pulled/spat hooks.
Same same for me shortly thereafter.
Began to lose hope...one guy boated two decent fish and left. Even more despondent.
Few light touches, nothing serious then WHAM~ The big bertha got a screamer (Dogfight 6500 on a Fin Nor PE8 rod) quickly got it out of the Bait board rod holder and started inflicting some HURT. This fish was heading for home base in a HURRY.
Matt was concerned about pulled hooks. I was worried about sharp rusted STEEL.
After a few surging runs, I turned the fishes head and began the "pump and wind" with short stroked (Goddam the dogfight is a lovely piece of gear!)
several anxious seconds later ,90cm of Pink was in the net, and gently lowered onto the deck of the boat.
FINALLY...we both exhaled...Whoop whoop and high fives! This is what it is all about..
:)
Tight lines

Moving to Onslow / First Boat
Submitted by Little_Richo on Thu, 2018-09-27 09:50Hey guys! I'm moving to Onslow for the next couple of years for work and am strongly considering investing in a boat to make the most of the fishing while I am up there.
I have never owned a boat and am looking for some advice, particularly for the Onslow conditions. I don't have a huge budget so was considering something on the smaller side, even if that means I am only able to fish some of the creeks, rather than past the islands.
Any information and advice for Onslow or purchasing a first boat would be greatly appreciated.

Spinning rod to pair with Saragosa 20K
Submitted by chris1108 on Mon, 2018-09-24 16:26Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend.
I'm just after some ideas on what rod to pair with a Saragosa 20000. I want to use it for casting big baits into the surf, slide baiting and also general shore fishing. Budget is anywhere from $200 to $500 for the rod itself.
I've got my mind almost made up on an Assassin EVO Zero AEZH, although that's at the high end of what I want to spend - can get a demo model for $495 at the moment. The Sensor Surf IZM Spin 153 (model 153XXS) also looks like it would go well with this reel. It's around $420 and the cast and line weight are similar to the Assassin.
I'm just considering all options and while I really want to get my first brand new Assassin, I'm also thinking f**k it, just get a 14' Prevail and with the money I'll save I can get some more of the gear I want.
In the $200-300 range though, what other rods would pair well with the 20K? Must be a versatile rod suited to the types of fishing mentioned above.
Cheers.

Gummy Shark
Submitted by joycey on Mon, 2018-09-24 14:32Hi all,
I caught a gummy shark for the first time today, however as I was unsure of how to dispatch and process it, I decided to let it go this time.
So what’s the way to deal with gummy’s, so I know for next time. Do you have to club them on head then bleed? Also what’s the best way to fillet them?
cheers

Cockburn Sound snapper numbers
Submitted by Mack1 on Sun, 2018-09-23 10:39I hve noticed plenty of boats in the mid sound area probably the D9 area, but most fishers I know are struggling to get a fish. Are there many fish getting caught? Last year plenty of boats were fishing along the rock walls with hit and miss results...all miss for me. Any tips would be appreciated. Are there more fish morningn night or day time?

Why not have extra long wkend
Submitted by Devocean on Sat, 2018-09-22 04:54Decided to ditch work fri and have the extra long wkend , hit two rocks beautiful day bit slow but got the goods in the end.
Surprise first drop was a spangled.shouldve got photo on the lie detector, photo didn’t do justice went 63cents. That’s a first for me metro , not the best on the chew imo but the boys were keen for fresh spango.
Next drop some good shows on a tiny little lump and the boys loaded up big time as soon as hit the bottom only to drop both of them Next drift got the goods coupla nice dhuys (nothing as big as the previous two just dropped) but everyone stoked to be on the board. Heaps of little pinks around, coupla big gummy’s , then finished the bag with sum nice blackass.
