Fishing Discussion
Thanks to Chivers Marine - site sponser
Submitted by Rambo on Sat, 2014-07-26 18:15I don't normally do this sort of thing but I wanted to say a big thank you to Luke at Chivers Marine.
I went in on Friday with an old Lowrance unit that was not powering up and it had my 700 waypoints stuck inside with no back up. I was peaking thinking that all my spots were irretrievable and that the unit was fried. Cursing the fact that I hadn't previously backed up the data. Luke spent over an hour trouble shooting and managed to power up the unit and transfer waypoints to a SDI card.
While there wasn't much in it for Chivers yesterday, they have picked up a customer that will come back again due to their good service. I will get my new sounder and plotter for my next boat from them when the time comes.

Fisshing Wilbinga tomorrow
Submitted by woodywantstofish on Sat, 2014-07-26 12:01after finally having our fishing times aligned and friend and I planned to head out on the boat this Sunday , but as luck would have it the conditions are not favourable.
not giving up we have decided that a beach fish is in order, and while we are at it lets make a journey out of it and head up to Wilbinga . but a few days of using the search function and I am starting to second guess myself.
is heading up at 4 am to 4wd on track that neither of us have been on before wise
will the beach be covered in weed after all storm front that is on us now.
will we be able o find a gutter to fish on at 5 in the morning.
I am starting to think that maybe the two rock mariner would be a better option early on and once it lightens up head up the beach.
with this option does anybody know if the track from two rocks is open or is it necessary to make the drive off Wanneroo rd.
any help or input would be much appreciated.

Pe3 v Pe2 on holding bottom
Submitted by byrnedog on Sat, 2014-07-26 10:35Just wanting some advice from those in the know about jigging and using sp's.
It's a new world to me which I'm keen to get involved in and I was curious to know if the line diameter plays a big part in trying to get your sp down to bottom. I seem to need to use a 2 ounce jig head min in 40-50m of water on an okay drift and even then I find my line is way out and off bottom in no time. I'm using tuffline xp pe3. Would I be better off using a pe2? Would that help at all with keeping it on bottom for longer?
Cheers guys, any input appreciated.

Anchors?
Submitted by BoozeFishSnooze on Fri, 2014-07-25 22:17Hey guys. I know this is probably a stupid question and I've had it on my mind for years, why do boats anchor from the bow and not from anywhere else? I've always thought it's so you take the ocean from the front area of the vessel instead of copping everything over the stern am I on the right sorta train of thought?
Cheers

Lost: Wedding Ring
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Fri, 2014-07-25 09:59Hey guys,
I know its a long shot, but I was out fishing yesterday with Anytime Brad from the forum and unfortunately lost my 4 month old wedding ring overboard while squidding in Petrov Bay on the north eastern side of Garden Island. My hands were cold as I had just washed them and it slipped off into the weed beds in about 4.5 mts of water at the northern end of the bay. I jumped in straight away, but without a mask on board and on the drift I was unable to locate it. While the wife is understanding, I am pretty gutted and thought I would put this up. Brad has the spot marked on his GPS and if the forecast for the next two days wasnt so bad I would probably go out in the dinghy for a dive to try to locate it, Maybe I will be able to have a look on sunday.
Basically if anyone is fishing, crabbing or squidding the northern end of the petrov bay and ever comes upon a silver and gold ring with a wavy line chased around the centre please let me know as I think I have got buckleys of finding it myself. In some ways I wish it had come off when we were out at 35mts knowing there was no way I would ever be able to get it back than in 4.5 mts in the bay in the weed and there being a slim chance that I might ever be able to find it.

HELP!!!!!! Etec motors
Submitted by Shacked81 on Thu, 2014-07-24 21:07Hi All,
First up, apologies for posting this in this forum, but would love a quick reply. May have stuffed up, sold a 24ft Wellcraft little while ago, have been searching ever since for an ally walkaround. Found one, racked out our savings to fly up, went for a whip, paid a deposit, and agreed on a price pending a motor check. Got check today and I'm pretty committed to delivery next week.
I love the boat, mrs and little dude adore it but the 2009 300 etec has come back with a heap of errors, temp and shift switch malfunction. I need to speak to an E-Tec dude/chick tomorrow. I live Sth metro, any suggestions??
Any help would be appreciated.

steep point december January?
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2014-07-24 10:39has any one had much luck fishing & camping on the beaches at steep point in late december early January? mate and I are thinking of heading up 27th dec and returning home 2nd jan... apparently no room left on the cliff to fish or camp... ranger saying that only leaves the beach as an option... if anyone has been up that time of year and fished anywhere but the cliffs wouldnt mind any advice... mate has all the necessary cliff fish and beach fishing gear just in case.... (mate will be camping high in the hills, got hit by the tsunami at steep point in 06)
other option is to take the boat to hamelin bay for those dates and leave steep point for another year

Phenix Titan rod build update
Submitted by Bunny on Wed, 2014-07-23 18:04The sister rod to the green and silver Titan I posted a few weeks back is finally underway. Here's a sneak peak. I had no intention to make it a Captain America theme but that's how it is turning out!
It's a personal build but will have no labels and I may sell it when it's done anyway so if anyone is interested let me know. It won't be cheap though as it's about to get a set of the new Fuji TORZITE guides with Titanium frames. Hopefully I'll have it done in about a month.
Advice needed on rod blank choice
Submitted by craig scott on Wed, 2014-07-23 16:34Hi guys.
Just got back from up North where the young bloke managed to snap the top 8 inches off a saltiga dorado all rounder 70s.
Thinking of using the guides and bottom section( handle) and doing a rebuild.
Would like to hear suggestions for a blank that would closely resemble the original.
Cheers, Craig.
Cosy Corner and surrounding areas.
Submitted by 420casts on Wed, 2014-07-23 13:48Staying about 2 mins from Cosy Corner from the 8th for a couple of days.
I was there about 2 weeks ago (for only 5 minutes, mind you), and I got only a bit of a look at the end of Cosy Corner Rd.
I'm trying to work out which species I should be targetting at this time of the year. Apparently it's a killer salmon beach, if so - is it any good this time of the year?
I'll bring a number of baits including mulies, squid, prawns and some frozen whole fish (various) since I haven't tried the spot before.
Any info would be appreciated.

Camping down south
Submitted by johnjohnthedon on Wed, 2014-07-23 13:03Hey guys!
Me n my mates are planning a camping trip down south but are unsure on where to go and where to stay!
We are hoping to be within 3.5 hours on perths CBD. Can you recommend any good locations or camping grounds?
Spectacular fishing isn't exactly nessesary as we are more into drinking beer and chillin than hauling in massive fish. But it'll be nice to catch a thing or two.
My friend told me its illegal to just pitch a tent and set up camp on the beach, is this true?
Any info on the subject is appreciated! Cheers in advance.

SYDNEY Fishing
Submitted by captain salty on Wed, 2014-07-23 06:41G'Day Lads,
I am making the move to Sydney for work in the next couple of weeks, off to the big smoke. I currently live down in Hopetoun, WA and have always fished down here.
No doubt the fishing isnt going to be as good as Hopey but can anyone give me a general run down on what it is like over there, i.e., what species are about that are worth chasing, how far out you need to go to get in good water, any spots and/or any other tips?
Much appreciated,
Captain Salty.

Land based Denham/Shark Bay advice...
Submitted by BigRang on Tue, 2014-07-22 22:39As the title suggests I'm looking for some advice on land based spots for Shark Bay/Denham. Heading up there early August but never been further north than Kalbarri so not too sure what to expect, I've done a lot of fishing along the south coast and south-west. VERY keen to get into a few Pinkies! Got a very capable 4wd so offroad isn't an issue but I'll have the boss and two small kiddies in tow most of the time... Thanks in advance! Cheers!

Tamala Report
Submitted by timboon on Tue, 2014-07-22 18:10Gday FW crew...
Just arrived home from a week up at Tamala... Stayed on the Prickly pt side and fished the gulfs and channels closest...
Plenty of Pinks of all sizes... Biggest went 83cms, didn't get a weight as wanted to get him back before the Dolphins gained an upper hand... Cheeky bastards!!
Ran a net out one arvo to chase some Mullet but only ended up with the one and a net full of Butter fish.... Fail...
I used placcys for the week and let the girls use bait ( butter fish :) ).... The most fun was some good sized pinks in about 80cm of water and a few times sight casting to them with the SP's... Managed one that went about 6kg ( no dolphins in the shallows waiting for an easy feed )...
Tried a few weed banks for squid but didn't have any success... Anyone done ok at Tamala on the squid??
Spotted a few Blue Bone in the shallows but being so clear and no live crabs/Occys we didn't get any hits...
Anyway all in all a good week away...
Recommend a trip for family's, a good place to dingi fish!!

Stella spare spool options
Submitted by triggy on Mon, 2014-07-21 20:12Gday All
Looking at options for a spare spool for a Stella 5000 swb. Not looking for the cheapest but definitely best value.
Should I stick with genuine or look at aftermarket? SOM look to be a very good option aftermarket. Will most likely go between pe2 and pe3, capacity obviously dependent on actual line diameter but not an issue for my fishing.
Any advice on which way to go, where to buy and cost would be a great help. Seems to be endless information on Stella but not so much on specific upgrades/spares etc.
Cheers

Deep drop coral bay
Submitted by Shortylook on Mon, 2014-07-21 18:57Now I have shared some of my spots with a few lads on here, so I'm hoping for some fishing karma. I'm after some help/1 spot to start me off for a deep fish at coral bay next week. Don't want every spot you have or the best one, just a start.
Cheers boys
