trout report
Submitted by travally21 on Sun, 2014-08-10 17:59For two days fishing I caught around 25-35 trout ranging from 23cm to 35cm near all were caught on strike tiger nymph soft plastic. With the exception of a few on skinny pops and duo toto's. The trout were voracious taking the lures right at you feet or at the bow of the kayak. When retrieving the skinny pop I made it barely pop just to create a disturbance on the surface let it sit for a few seconds. With the nymph any retrieve worked, straight wind or lots of twitches but letting it sink is when the trout took it the most. For the toto it wobbles when sinking so just a quick twitch up and let it sink again. I only ended up taking 2.

WTB
Submitted by lachieH on Sun, 2014-08-10 14:59This post is really about a few things. First of all I have a really old ryobi cobra S but was hardly used until I did at the start of the year but lost the winding handle down the rocks at the dawesville cut. It's a good little reel and came as a combo and really want a new handle.
secondly I have a rod with a tip which has a big chip and it frayed all the fishing line that goes through it. Any idea where I could buy a tip that would fit and how to put the tip on?
any info would be appreciated!

Lost Anchor - Diver(s) wanted
Submitted by Guardy on Sat, 2014-08-09 20:50I was out last night off Carnac, not a great night. Could see plenty of snapper on the sounder but only got 3 undersize, released well. Unfortunately although I anchored in sand (I think) when I went to pick up my Sarca anchor it was a no go. Spent about 45 minutes trying from all angles but could only get the anchor rope up to around my 25 metre mark and that was straight up and down. I figure the rope or chain is wrapped around something down there as the water depth is a touch over 13 metres.
Anyhow to cut a long story short I had to cut off the rope and I now need a diver or two for safety to go down and release it for retrieval. There is a slab of your favourite amber fluid in it. I can take you out anytime. Give me a yell if you can help. Cheers.

Where to go fishing - Suggestions Needed!!
Submitted by Piggy on Sat, 2014-08-09 15:14Gents,
I am thinking about taking 2 weeks off in late October / Early November and traveling from Perth up to as far as Exmouth fishing anywhere I can along the way. I have just got a new 7m ally and keen to test it out with a few decent fish.
As the demersal ban would have started by then I cannot fish anywhere south of Kalbarri (For demersals) so I was thinking around Denham, Coral Bay and Exmouth.
My question is if anyone has any experience with fishing up in that area (North of Kalbarri) Where would you suggest going? If there are any locals keen to come for a fish I will be happy to take you out if you show me some good spots!!
Cheers

Amazing day off Hillarys
Submitted by wrasse magnet on Sat, 2014-08-09 09:54With the weather clearing yesterday decided to take the boat out and go for some sandys behind the 3 mile. Launched at Hillarys after 10 and headed off in perfect conditions. Didn't take long to find the whiting, and they were good size as well, but fishing soon became an after-thought when a pod of Dwarf Minke Whales surrounded the boat. Thinking they would disappear quickly I deployed the GoPro to get some footage, but amazingly the pod stayed with me the whole day - they were still swimming around the boat when I left for the ramp at 2:30 in the arvo!
Was a truly amazing experience, and all just 4 miles off Hillarys! My only regret is that I couldn't jump in the water with them - solo mission and no snorkelling gear onboard.
GoPro footage turned out really well, here's a couple of photos:

Any takers?
Submitted by Burra on Sat, 2014-08-09 09:53Hi guys,
I currently have my father over from the mid north coast of NSW and he is / we are keen to get out and catch some WA fish. I currently don't have a boat and was wondering if anyone on the site is looking for a crew for either Sunday or next week some time.
We are both very experienced with boating and fishing and I have mastered the art of pulling an anchor. We will pay for our way and are situated near Hillarys.
Regards,
Adam.
Green Head LB
Submitted by Hutch on Fri, 2014-08-08 21:44Hi guys,
Heading up to Green Head in a couple of weeks and just chasing some info on the landbased fishing there. Searched a fair bit and it sounds like a boat fishing mecca but only taking the yaks out and so is weather dependent.
Being winter I suspect the beaches will be weeded up but Ill give it a go anyway.
Staying in South Bay and heard rumours of a jetty in the area, is fishing allowed off it? If so is it worth trying for b&b species or possibly someting larger?
Cheers
Hutch

Cray Pot hauler advice
Submitted by Gman66 on Fri, 2014-08-08 07:42I'm looking at getting an electric cray pot hauler with a preference for the crane arm mounted type. I have spoken to a bloke with a "stress free" brand and he rated it highly, the model sold in WA is a bit over 2k. There are a number of different brands/models sold out of USA and Canada that look good as well. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience/recommendations on Pot Hauler types.
The hauler will be used on a 6.5 metre Whitley sea legend, it's a very stable boat at sea. Any helpful advice welcome.
Thanks G

Beach casting outfit
Submitted by gav1970 on Thu, 2014-08-07 12:38I'm thinking about getting myself an overhead outfit for casting off the beach and have been looking at a Daiwa Millionaire 7ht Mag and a Daiwa sensor surf oh 11'4".
Does anyone own/have any experience with either of these or maybe any other recommendations? I'm not great with overheads but it's something I'd like to get into more and the millionaire is supposed to be quite easy to cast. Any advice is appreciated.

Best Mods You've Done
Submitted by elliotbirch on Wed, 2014-08-06 13:37Hey guys,
I've had the chance now to take my recently (6 months ago) purchased boat out for a few day trips and a couple of trips up North too and am compiling a list of mods/accessories that will make it into a fishing/boating machine. It's a 4.7m Ally Centre Console and already got a fair bit of kit with it; dual batteries, casting deck, salt water deck wash, UHF etc etc but missing a few of the basics like a built in bait board and bimini. Going to Chivers today to get a quote of the bait board and a few other things - just chasing a few ideas on things that you guys really value in your boat and would consider a must(want haha)-have mod? I'm sure plenty of people on here will be interested in your responses!!
Cheers in Advance.

Helpful tips from someone in a night time fishing trip boating accident
Submitted by Gman66 on Wed, 2014-08-06 11:54I was talking with a bloke down the jetty who recently had to abandon his boat at night after hitting a reef. The boat was lost and he's now shore based for a few years until he saves for a new boat. During the conversation I asked him if he had any learnings he could share about the emergency situation and he offered the following which I found helpful.
- Make sure you can identify your night flares from your day flares and have them in a place they can be easily grabbed at night in the dark. The example he gave was that in the moment (could well be panic involved stuck on a reef at night being hit by waves) he set off a his day flare/s first due to confusion.
- The night flares when set off don't last for that long so pick your moment.
- Keep your EPIRB above deck and accessible.
- The cause of the incident was he allowed himself to be distracted by a passenger who was discussing a bit of a medical condition with him and he lost concentration.
The skipper had been offshore night boat fishing for four years incident free, seemed a level headed bloke from the short interaction I had with him. I appreciated him sharing the learnings, there might be something in it for others as well.
Cheers G
