Fish flesh deterioration?
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2011-09-27 16:33Hi guys,
A weird question and I wasnt even sure what category to put it in, but has anyone ever melted the flesh off a fishes head in order to preserve the fishes skull and jaws.
A mate of mine has a collection of jack, barra, snapper and mackeral jaws on his desk at work and they look awesome. He told me he lopped the head off and put the head in an air tight container with napi-san and hot water and it reacts and eats away the flesh. Other people put the head on an ants nest
Has anyone ever done this and what method have you used. I think it would be a neat little hobby to catch a descent fish and keep its jaws as a trophy. Im testing this with a coral trout head i caught the other day. I have it in a container with a heap of napisan and hot water but it doesnt seem to be doing much. Do you think the water needs to be changed regularly to ensure it stays hot or will it still react when the water is normal temp?
Sorry for the weird question but can anyone help

ID please
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2011-09-27 13:49Now I love trying to help and know a little about ocean critters, but what could this be. Taken through water, but with the colouration not going to tackle it!!!
Everyone will go BRO, but way to big for this one, about the size in circumference as holding your hands together forming a loop roughly.
It flashed these colours when it was hunting, or being hunted. Not to worried overall but thought why not see if some guru can for fun help.

Dropper loops - landbased.
Submitted by pembo6 on Sun, 2011-09-25 23:50So guys (and gals), what is your preference for dropper rigs (paternoster), for landbased fishing.
I usually do the standard dropper loops. I try to get them around 15 – 30 cm long and occasionally use a twisted dropper. I like being able to change hooks easily. Just loop them on.
I often wonder if the double line in the dropper loop will scare fish away. Would it be better to do a dropper knot with single dropper line instead of a loop? I think some sort of blood dropper knot is used???
Or even use 3 way swivels and tie the droppers directly to the swivel (which I do use for larger rigs for tailor, salmon etc).
I never seem to catch as many fish using a dropper rig, and I wonder if it is the doubled loop that the fish can see easily. But I definitely like the idea of presenting 2 different baits.
In particular I am talking about rigs for fish like skippy, tarwhine, salmon trout, maybe whiting (when not using the typical running ball setup).
Thanks for your thoughts. What do you use?

WA fishing rec. licens
Submitted by flyingdutchfisherman on Sun, 2011-09-25 21:33Bought today a tinny for my WA fishing trip! A 3 meter alminium tinny with a 8 horsepower!
Me and my mate heading next month From Cairns down to Perth on a crazy road trip! It is gonna be 2 months off hardcore fishing! We're driving a piece of the savanah highway to Normanton and down to Mount Isa and Katherine, Darwin 2 the West coast.
So the boat is registerd and i'm gonna do a skipper/boat licens but what else do I need to organise to make the trip sweet as possible?!?????!
I heard you need a rec fishing licens on the west coast; How and where can I get this one?
What kind of safetey gear do I need to take on the boat?
For cast netting I need a licens I can get from the Post office , correct?
Anything else what could be inportant?
And ofcourse where are the hotspots to stop from Cairns all the way up to Darwin; from barra fishing to game fishing preferd out of a tinny
So any tip to make our trip SWEET as possible, is Welcome!
cheers!

Surprise in 65m and PE3
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2011-09-25 20:54Bit of a surprise when jigging for demersals on a little lump I spotted yesterday in 65m that we have never fished before...gave the Ocea Jigger 1500 and jigforce a bit of a workout....

Big FAT head...the fish..... in case your not sure.....

Chrisp, my trusty deckie and keen snakes alive consumer, followed up next drop with his PE3 XZoga indicating a nice fish...

Result, this cracker pinkie on jig.

Which was happily released to fight another day, making the capture even better seeing it swim off strongly
.jpg)
A few other surprises turned up.....this went hard on PE2, the Stella 4000PG getting a nice little workout.
.jpg)
Was a cracking day, ended up with bloody sore arms after hitting a patch of pretty nasty sambos in closer at another demersal spot, this time in 45m, that seems to have been overrun with larger models.....we needed PE5 to stop the fish....our mates in the boat in the background were running PE3 max, and while they landed a couple of absolute crackers, were rapidly running out of jigs so they called us over and then sat back and watched the fun.........both me and Chrisp ended in some very solid shallow water sambos, that always seem to go harder, while the other lads lost several more jigs on PE3 and PE2.........cheers fellas!!!

Am looking at buying a splash cover for my 2010 115hp 4 stroke Mercury and i like the look of the OMC covers and have seen them on alot of boats. I was in the process of ordering one online from Australia's Marine Direct and paying about $250 incl postage. But i then thought is there someone local that supplies them. Or are they all made to order, i have no idea.
Any help would be appreciated.

Best SW land based fishing spots ?????
Submitted by pembo6 on Sun, 2011-09-25 15:46Hi all.
I am going away with the family in a couple of weeks down Dunsborough way. Looking for suggestions for some decent fishing spots.
I dont want anyones "secret spots" (unless they are willing to divulge...), just your recommendations for decent areas around the Dunsborough to Yallingup area.
Will only have time for 1 or 2 fishing sessions so dont want to spend hours driving around tryig to find the perfect spot.
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have fished Yallingup beach before with little success. Low tide. Huge swell. Maybe I should try further north up the beach??
P.S. : I dont have any super heavy gear. Heaviest rod can only handle 4-5oz cast weight.
Will be on my own so dont want any dangerous spots.
Have 4wd.
Thinking about going for some decent skippy or tailor (if they around).
Thanks

Lures for up North
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Sat, 2011-09-24 18:57Hi guys
I'm going up north this friday (30th?) and am only taking my tiny gear- small reel with 90m 3.6kg braid and 4' rod- and am wondering what are good lures to try for GT's and other species from the beach.
Also, should I take bigger reels like 2500 or 3000, and 6ft rods?
Cheers Ben

OK - who is going fishing at noon today?
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2011-09-24 09:36I love the Eagles, and good luck to them, but I am off fishing as the wind looks good from 10am to about 3pm. And no music radio on the boat so cant listen.
I think I must love fishing more than footy. If the Eagles win, there is no way I would miss a GF with them in it though.

Toe-Rags
Submitted by deezydee on Sat, 2011-09-24 08:48
I`m sure we`ve all purchased an item at one stage or another that looks good, but just doesn`t cut the mustard according to the ratings listed. When buying off ebay it`s buyer beware, so if you find a Perth based seller you would expect that anyissues arising can be sorted out without freight hassles, WRONG.
Humour me please, i purchased an advertised 100 lb jigging rod and made an offer,(i really didn`t need another rod but thats beside the point) received the rod within2 days, great service so far. I decided to christen the rod with a calcutta 400 with 30 lb braid on it, first decent hook up and the fish taking drag, tightened it up some more and bang the top section of the rod snaps in two. High sticking was the cause according to the seller and thats as far a i got with any sort of correspondence.
Clearly the rod is not capable of handling the advertised line rating, i set my drags by digital scales so am well aware of the one third rule. For those about to say i should have bought from a local shop, i did spent over $1500 at bluewater prior to my trip, a jigging rod was not on my priority list hence, ebay.
After discussions over a few beers with some other anglers, it seems like this seller has advertised other items over the years as something their not.
I`m from the old school that believes what someone tells me, i need to harden up and take nothing for granted eh.
Any other aggrieved buyers out there ? thats my 2c for today.

Fisherman's Etiquette
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Sat, 2011-09-24 06:59Looks like this might be a fine oppertunity for Fishwrecked to put together a Fisherman's Etiquette Information Thread for responsible fishing and get the input from all Fishos and then maybe add this to the site for all members/non - members to read, understand and discuss for when going fishing.
Not only for boating, but landbased as well. I have just seen too many incidents the past 10 months, boating and landbased that begs the question has the fisho no respect for his fellow angler or the enviroment he / she fishes in. Makes me question a lot things...
Found this on the net and looks like thought and discussion went into this - this can be a starting block and we can adjust and add as we go along. The interesting bit here would be that there are the legit Fisherman's Etiquette - and then there are those "unspoken" etiquette rules, and would be great to see some input from everyone, also the older farts -
As Ethical Anglers:
- We do not spill or dump gasoline, oil or other pollutants on land or into the water.
- When fishing we never leave trash behind, including worn or discarded line, old hooks and bait.
- We leave our fishing site as clean or cleaner than we found it.
- We report environmental damage and pollution to the relevant authorities.
- When boating or anchoring, we take care to avoid damaging sensitive areas.
- We do our best to prevent the spread of exotic plants and animals.
- We never use as live bait fish that do not normally reside in the waters we are fishing, nor do we introduce exotic species that may survive and reproduce into fishing waters.
Responsible Anglers Respect Fish And Handle Them Carefully
- We use only legal tackle, attend to our gear and value our catch.
- We keep no more fish than needed for consumption and legally allowed and we never wastefully discard fish that are retained.
- We practice conservation and use proper release methods for fish not retained.
- We use tackle and techniques that avoid the capture of, or minimize the harm to unwanted fish or fish prohibited from retention.
- We learn and comply with all angling regulations.
- We report any illegal fishing activities we observe to the proper authorities.
Responsible Anglers Respect The Rights Of Others
- We treat other anglers, boaters and other people we might meet in the field with courtesy and respect.
- We obtain permission from landowners and never trespass on private lands or waters.
- We respect the space of other anglers when fishing from the shore or in a boat and give room to all anglers playing a fish.
Responsible Anglers Take Care Of Their Own Safety And The Safety Of Others When Fishing
- We observe all operator and safety regulations.
- We watch our speed and our wake and keep a safe distance from shore based anglers, jetties and other boats.
Responsible Anglers Lead By Example
- We educate fellow anglers, especially new participants about fishing ethics.
- We promote ethical behavior in the use of aquatic resources through education and example.
- We maintain and promote public awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding responsible fishing.
