Ledge Point - anyone stayed there
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2011-09-16 18:33Has anyone stayed at Ledge Point Holiday Village? What's it like? What's the ramp like and importantly what's the fishing like? Is there anywhere protected if the wind gets up?

Submitted by bitten on Fri, 2011-09-16 03:18hey guys am heading up to the point in march next year will be my first time there and i cant wait.
just a couple of questions any advice would be good
i will be spinning and bottom fishing only no balloning for me this time i am going to buy a daiwa emblem 6000 reel for spinning and need a a rod to match it too somthing reasonably light and about 10 foot i think any suggestions? i want to go for somthing that is going to give me good casting distance also with a bit of power though.
also i was thinking 30lb braid as mainline agree or disagree?
how heavy a line is good for bottom fishing there especialy in the shallow reefy areas for baldies etc..
will probably use my penn spinfisher 950 for bottom bouncing
any info would be good cheers guys

MK2 Vernatone Muffler and B series Cummins Reivew
Submitted by SailFishQuepos on Fri, 2011-09-16 01:14Just put on a new Vernatone MK2 round 2 chamber muffler on my B series Cummins and the results were enormous. I have a 5.9 M3 330hp cummins and before I was running a Costa Rica engineered muffler system which just had some bends in the exhaust tube and was bad. Here's the pros and cons I found
Cons:
We'll start with the negative as I don't want to end with it :) This was hard to install. Vernatone recommends you install this thing above the waterline (which in my case is the floor) so i had to install it above the engine. Had to build a riser off the turbo so the muffler sits right above the engine. Then I had to buy a ceramic insulation mat to guard against heat from the riser (it is dry until right before it hits the muffler) and wrap the riser in Fiberglass tape. I am going to cover that in Aluminum but haven't got to that part yet. I then had to sand and add on arms to the versatone so that it is removable but well installed when I am in rough water. I built four tabs and put them around the motor in the side walls of the box, and the muffler has four arms that sit on those tabs with a big stainless bolt in each. Lots of work, but the muffler is very secure, you can sit on it, and it comes out easily. This might be easier on a different boat, but overall the installation was well worth it! The only other con would be cruising. It reduced the noise cruising a ton, but I thought it would knock 100 percent of it out. I'd say it got rid of about half the cruising noise. About 1200 rpm you can hear it throwing the water out of the muffler (a cool bubbling noise), and then about 1500 you start to hear exhaust. At 2000 you can really hear the exhaust, but not as bad as before.
Pros: It is dead silent trolling. I mean nothing coming out of the pipe at all at 1000 rpms. When we first started the boat, we all said "wow", nobody thought it would be dead silent. You could here a little noise coming out of the motor box, but nothing out of the pipe. I instantly heard one of the valves clicking out of adjustment, which I couldn't hear over the exhaust. It reminds me of when I had a race car and we would put mufflers on it to hear if the motor sounded ok and then take them off to race. You really can't hear what's going on with all that exhaust noise drowning out everything.
When we went out trolling, I never realized how noisy the wake is. I couldn't hear any of that before, but now all we hear is wake while trolling. The radio can be on low and heard very well as well. My particular boat was a little poorly designed and the exhaust comes out right at the water line (I think the exhaust noise mostly matters when the exhaust comes out at the water line, otherwise you are scaring birds and not fish:) ). The floor prevented me from raising the exhaust up, so I had to kill the noise instead of moving it. Mission accomplished.
Since installing the muffler, we are in the middle of the lowest season for billfish here, and have gotten 5, 4, 2, 2, 4 to the boat on the last 5 trips. Typical this time of year is 1 or 2, and I think this is mostly from the muffler. The two days with 2 I was trying a smaller prop, and I switched it back out and got the last 4. Good fishing technique is vital, but it's nice not to have noise working against me.
Before, we never had fish hit on the muffler side teaser, now both sides are very active. First day out, I yelled to mike, short teaser and instinctively he ran to the non muffler side. I had to yell, the other teaser, and he was like huh? That almost never happened before. I also used to not be able to make the lap and pick up billfish that bite but didn't get hooked as they would run off, but now I make the lap and they are still there. Another interesting story, we had a sailfish on yesterday, and in the past they always ran straight from the boat after they were hooked. Yesterday, this fish swam right up to the boat, and about 5 feet away, the boat startled him and he took off the other direction. He had no idea where we were at. I've only done 5 trips with the muffler, but I can see a huge difference in the behavior of the fish. And there are more of them.
So overall, if you have the time to install it, or better yet, the money to pay someone else to do it, I think this is on par with the Barry control motor mounts I installed a while back. Helps a ton with the fatigue, raises fish(which hang around longer as well), and definitely lets you hear the radio better.
And on a side note, I am in no way connected or affiliated to Vernatone, just a paying satisfied customer.

My big ride
Submitted by GrahamM on Thu, 2011-09-15 16:28
Gday I know this isnt fishing related but just thought i would share this with you all.
I will be doing a charity bike ride for Muscular dystrophy ( representing a young man called Kyle who has Duchenne Muscular dystrophy) Raising needed funds for reasearch on this disease.
I will be participating in the Dwellingup 100k classic which is a 104k mountain bike ride through and around Dwellingup this weekend with my colleague who 'conned' me into doing this but i do feel it will be a great acheivement and the added bonus of helping others
The ride will take me somewere around 6.5 hours hopefully ( 6.5 hours was the average time for my age bracket last year). This will be my biggest ride i have done by a long way and just hope to complete it as it is officially a race but just to finish it will do me. So feel free to check out the website and any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Recreational fishers fined for breaches
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-09-15 13:25Lobster fishers to pay $7,500 each for bag limit breach
Two men have been ordered to pay fines and penalties of $7,500 each, for jointly having 40 rock lobsters more than the recreational fishing rules allow.
Roland Thomas FLETCHER and Keith Edward FLETCHER, both aged 67, of Halls Head were found guilty of excess bag limit offences, when they appeared in the Mandurah Magistrates Court this week (Tuesday 13 September 2011).
When the twins where apprehended by Fisheries and Marine Officers in December 2010 at Horseshoe Reef in Comet Bay, they were anchored and fishing with rods from their vessel.
In a search of the vessel, the officers found a total of 52 rock lobsters on board, two of which were measured as undersized and returned to the water.
The court was told the daily bag limit for Western rock lobster was six per licence-holder and the boat limit was 12, when two or more licensed fishers were onboard.
South Metro Region Compliance Manager John Breeden said the court imposed fine of $1,500, plus the mandatory penalty of $6,000, for the rock lobster involved in the offences, would serve as a strong reminder that breaching WA fishing rules was just not worth it.
“Bag and boat limits are set to ensure sustainability of the State’s fisheries,” he said.
In other cases before Mandurah’s Magistrates Court this week, 35 year old Dingping WEN of Gosnells entered an endorsed plea of guilty and was ordered to pay more than $1,840 for possession of 18 Blue Swimmer crabs with a carapace size less than 127mm (legal minimum size). He was apprehended at 8.35pm two days after Christmas Day in 2010 towing a foam tub and carrying a scoop net, as he walked near the shoreline of the Harvey Estuary at Island Point.
At the same location on 2 February this year, around mid-evening, two further people were apprehended by Fisheries and Marine Officers for bag limit breaches. In Mandurah Magistrates Court, 52-year-old Delia Manolong STRAHAN and 61-year-old Angelina BRLJEVICH – both of Collie – were also fined for having 19 and 11 excess crabs respectively. Strahan was ordered to pay more than $1,680 for her fine, mandatory penalty and court costs. Brljevich received fine, penalty and costs totalling more than $1060.
The South Metro Region Compliance Manager said all crab fishers should be reminded that crab fishing was currently in a closed season for both the Peel Harvey Estuary and Cockburn Sound.
“The Peel Harvey crabbing season reopens on 1 November and Cockburn Sound reopens 15 December,” Mr Breeden said.

Wilbinga Tailor
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Thu, 2011-09-15 07:31Yes; they are still on. Trip yesterday confirms this and yes; it's still popular now. The fish in the pic went 55cms and a few were left in the hole. One I pulled the hooks out on the beach probably would have gone well over 60cms. Not sure how well the hole will sustain the pressure as there have been a lot of fish taken out of there recently.

We fished the power station without any luck but could see the chaos going on out towards the middle of the sound, looked like 20+ boats out there huddled in on the same area, figured they were onto some schooling snapper..

Giant 5m shark sighted in Cockburn Sound early today
Submitted by NightWolf on Wed, 2011-09-14 09:06A FIVE-METRE shark has been spotted in Cockburn Sound this morning.
The Department of Fisheries has issued a warning for water users to be cautious after the shark, believed to be a great white, was seen by a fisherman about 6.30am.
It was spotted in Cockburn Sound near the Alcoa Power Station.
Last week, bodyboarder Kyle Burden, 21, was killed by a giant shark near at Bunker Bay, near Dunsborough.
Mr Burden suffered massive injuries to his lower body and died at the beach after he was dragged to shore by fellow surfers.
If you see a shark, report it to the water police on 9442 8600.

Berly works wonders!!!!
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Tue, 2011-09-13 19:05had lovely conditions this morning and we decided to head out to cockburn sound for a snapper snoop :), winds had been good and so we expected the vis to be a bit better, and with all the lino reports we thought, lets go get some
we ended up at my mate Joes house at around 6:30, there wa four of us going out, me, Joe, Ryan and Adam. we got all our gear ready and watied for about an hour while we loaded the boat and adam was fixing his spear
finnally we go to woodman point at 7:30, we get there and gear up, put the boat in the water and and there the day started.
we headed out to our first spot ( ryans spot x where he last season saw the school and shot one and 2 other shots were taken at the school) we dived along there only find the vis was about 2-3m max, if i stuck my gun out (about 1.8m long with the spear) i could see the tip but not much past it. we dived all along this spot but we found nothing, to make matters worse my sinuses were playing up and it hurt to dive everytime.
we headed of to joes spot X where there is ussauly pink if they are in, and there are badlies if u look for em ( a 7.5kg has come from here) joe put a scaling bag on the bottom of this float hagning about 1m below the surface and filled it with our berly, he had all differynt cut up squid bits like heads and flaps, and i had half a bag of mulies, a yellow tail king fillet and some squid aswell
we all jumped in the water and again, terrible vis, couldnt see the bottom in 5m. and i loaded my gun and then looked around to see adam hitting the berely bag with the but of his gun, i then shook the bag a bit( you know get the juices flowing around) adam even said "wow this is good berely if theres something here this will bring it in." i followed joe who had the berely bag about 2m behind him as he was holding the line near him trying to make sure if the pinks come that we see them, i did a little dive everynow and then only seeing skippy and yellow tail.
On one dive Joe was breathing up and i was like ok i might aswell dive aswell, i searched around but found nothing, i re surfaced and then discharged my snorkel. looked at joe and saw him pointing at me. i turned to my left and all is saw was this big grey wall!!!, a 3.5m great white!(this is my second great white i have seen while diving now both times with joe) i basically teleported into joe and went back to back making sure it didnt come to close and we knew were it was, but with the vis that bad we kept loosing it only to see it re apear on the other side.
I was swimming into the float line and the berely bag was only about a metere away from us, so joe said we gotta get away from it, as we started going away it still followed us, this thing wasnt intrested in the berely, he wanted us! Joe later told me this is what scared him the most, at one point it even swam straight at joe and joe was about to hit it in the head with his gun but he turned, now remeber the vis is only about 3-4m here, so everytime we saw it it was closer then that! most of the time it was about 2m from joe and about 1m from me when it came to my side.
we started the biggest 50m swim back to the boat i have ever done in my life, it followed us the whole time and i was panicy, i had even joked about seeing one last night, when we got to about 20m from the boat i lost sight of it and didnt see it again, Joe told me a differnt story, he saw it the whole time, when we got about 5m from the boat i did a sprint for it, in one kick in threw the gun on board and flew into the boat, joe then slowly ( alot more relxed followed) now the scary part, appernetly when i did that last little burst, it changed direction and came for me, and joe said all he could think is i am about to get bitten.
We got on board and the white did a big tail kick right at the motor, i started pulling the anchor and we heading to go get ryan and adam ( about 80m on the other side of the boat) we got them in then we talked about the shark, after a few minutes i see a thing in the back of the boat, the shark was back! it kept cirlcing the boat and we tried to get the cameras ready to take a photo, it then dissaperad as fast as it first appeared.
we knew we couldnt go back in cause it was being very aggresive, even though our sounder showed very good fish! most likely the pinks, so we started heading to another spot to check it out, as we started, i looked in the engine trail, the thing was following the boat! so we started to take photos again and we got one goodish one :), we looked around abit more, had fishiers come and check us then headed back in and called it a day at 11am.
All in all a good day, and i am pretty sure i owe Joe Petrovich my life as he basically took control of the situation. but hey Adam was right, the berly worked!

For you blokes that slide.
Submitted by cudbfishn on Mon, 2011-09-12 19:24What knot do you use to tie your leader on?
Im using 30lb mono and I have been lazy and tieing it straight to the O ring. I mainly chase edible fish so havent worried about too many sharks. But also as my technique improves with my casting im worried about letting a 6oz sinker fly so will want to be tying 60-80lb leader to my 30lb mono main. Im up with all the advanced braid to mono knots. When trolling in the past i have used Plait to albright but this knot seems to big for casting?? I have searched a few different sites and found nothing, the next step is to get some hollow core braid but this might be a pita if I "crack off" a few times.
