Busso squidding.

Hey all.

I went down to busselton to try and get some of these squid that everyone was talking about. so on thursday i headed down. I got to the jetty in the day at 12ish and only stayed for a few hours, i caught around 30 squd all wayy to small so i released all of them much to some peoples discust. It was quite amazing how many small squid were around i had 10 chasing my jig at one time pretty cool. Im thinking this winter will be massive for the guys down at busso for big squid and lots of them good signs. Finished up down at the jetty and went home and prepared for a night squid. I got there and there was heaps of small squid around again. i released heaps again then i started getting into some that were big enough to eat. We had about 10 or so between me and a mate and i was just messing around when i hooked a big squid, my mate recons it could of gone the kilo mark but it was only lightly hooked and dropped of. I dropped the jig again and hooked it this time i gave it some time to take the jig in to the firmer bit of the tenticles, someone that was squidding up the jetty sore me hooked up big and thought that we would try and hook it aswell. Im not shore if he was trying to help or to take my squid but any way he hooked my jig and not the squid and pulled my jig out of the squid in which the squid bolted off. My mate then got a 25cm hooded squid and was quite happy about that. We finished keeping squid because we got our limit around 11.30. We then had a few casts for herring and catching and releasing some more squid. Got to the cleaning station and cleaned the squid which took ages because we were messing around with the guts and taking photos. Got home at 2.30 and ate some squid and went to sleep.

A Couple of small ones that were released

Average size squid. Haha

My mates squid and mine. ( mine was smaller :( )

The haul. 29 squid and an occie.

The plan was to get up at 5.30 and have another squid and try get some crabs, but we slept through both of our alarms so we got to the jetty around 9.00. started having a few casts of the squid jigs and got quite a few follows and a couple of small ones which i released. I got 10 or so average ones but nothing to big. i walked up to a couple of younger guys using cheap jigs and mono casting in to a weed bed in close becasue they couldnt cast any further. i asked caught anything? they said nar nothing not even a follow, i said oh ok. So i put a cast into the further back weed beds a few meters down from them and hooked up solid, it took drag and was the best fight ive had on a squid. I got it to the jetty and started pulling it up when all these people out of no were started watching. I had the squid to the top of the railing and the bugger grabbed on to the out side of it and started swinging and shot ink and slime ALL over me haha. i pulled in in and it measured around the 27cm hooded mark so i was happy. Nailed another smaller one after that and thought that will do for lunch. Walked back to were my mater was crabbing and he had 10 crabs so lunch was awsome!

27cm hooded squid.

Me and the squid ( bending over becasue the line was tangled and a random was taking the photo so wanted it done quickly)

Lunch.

The new busso jetty is a massive improvement from the old. And the lights on are really nice one down side is the graffiti already on the jetty if it keeps up the jetty will be closed at night. All in all a great fun and tasty trip down to busso. Thanks for reading.

Cheers Danno

BIG THANK YOU

Would just like to pass on my thanks to all the gents and ladies who give up their time over the easter break (and anytime for that matter) to make sure help is available for all us boaties when things don't go to plan and need assistance on the open water.

Headed down to woodmans point this morning and launched just before sun was up with the anticipation of an awesome days fishing.excitement was building and all geared up ready for some bottom bouncing just south of rotto.Started the motor fine let it warm up for a few minutes and headed out of the groins got just outside the groins started to open it up with the fresh easterly behind us and within 1km motor decided to shut down as if it had run out of fuel (which was not the case because put 100l in on the way to ramp) tried starting again and had a fiddle with the spark plugs etc. but to no avail.20 mins went by and decided to let Cockburn sea rescue know i would need a tow back in and thankfully they arrived within 1 hour to take us back to the boat ramp.

As annoying and frustrating as this was I will be grateful that it didn't happen further out to were we were headed.

The next time i post a report it will be of a more productive day"with a bit of luck"

p.s thanks to the boys at cockburn sea rescue.

Tiagra: difference between models?

hi guy

was just wondering (and I know this is an obvious question): but what is the difference between the different models of tiarga: A, WA, LRSA, WLSRA etc... im guessing that means single speed, 2 speed, left hander etc.. but which is which and surely there must be more to it than that?

Also, looking at doing the ebay thing- can usually find them for a couple of hundred cheaper than anywhere else... anything I should keep an eye out for in terms of different recent years models etc (besides the handle?)

thanks guys for any help!

what is the gurus plan this long weekend?

Overhead Drag Problem

Just bought a nice TN16 Trinidad from Wooden Fish.

Took it down to Bluewater to get the drag upgraded to carbontex.

They put it in and now it has less drag than before.  I would expect to be able to lock the thing up so I couldn't pull line off it but that wasn't the case.  I have left it there for them to scratch their heads over.

Anyone have any exeperience with this?

Am I right about thinking I should be able to lock it up or am I expecting too much?

Broome in may

Hi all, sorry to be a pest!!!

Im flying up to darwin and my mate n i are driving to broome to chase some sails on fly. Ive been looking around the net and there really isnt a great deal of info about the place. We are towing up a 5m boat.

Has anyone else fished Broome in May and if so what have you had success on? I hope we can find trevs, macks and tuna. Im just trying to nut out what to bring, Im not just a fly fisho. We will chase sails until we get a few and then we can target other species. We have 7 days there from May 22nd. Cheers guys

P.s we would love a few Gps marks for some tasty reef species. Please? we will take them too the grave, promise

Where to go....?

I'm a bit stuck.

Got no boat - don't really want one.  Go fishing sometimes from Woodman's point - for herring and small tailor - but right now there is NOTHING except scaly mack.

I'm not real experienced with Australian fishing.  Just looking for some tasty, easy to catch fish - they don't need to be too big (the Mrs loves herring!).

I'd like to catch some salmon (if and when they get here)....

I've got a couple of beach-casters, 5ft, 6ft and an 8ft.  I live in Northbridge and don't really wanna drive too far.

So - suggestions anyone about what I should be targeting over the next month and how to catch it.

Cheers

Tim

Easter weekend. What you up to ??

Wharts everyone up to ???

We have a pretty good weekend planned cruising around some of the islands further across the gulf , trout, bluebone and a cray or two on the menu. Had a bit of a look last weekend and loved it so with 2 nights up our sleeves before Bec has to work again its off again for us.

The brother is taking his family to Augusta and a my best mate is off to Denmark with his crowd so its lookig like a water based weekend for us all.

Saw a fair few local boats fuelling up today ( busted adz) and the weather looks awsum.

Tight lines, straight spears and calm waters to you all . . .

Cockburn - Rockingham Advice on whats hot

Hi Everyone,

I am looking at dusting of the rods and getting out tomorrow, wanted to know if anyone was able to let us know what is running around Cockburn and Rockingham area's from the shore,

Good locations and type of fish, if anyone has any info that would be awesome.

Thanks everyone

no big salmon bunbury

even know there hasnt been any strong reports of salmon on the west coast, the salmon trout here in bunbury have been keeping me entertained on the light gear with plastics and little poppers..most fish around a kilo. everyyear around salmon season we get massive amount of salmon trout. they move around alot but once u find them u can hold them in front of u for hours..any lure and they absolutley inhale them. and the good thing is they just seem to get bigger and bigger untill they piss off again. i just the love the typical salmon hit on a plastic(big dead weight then...HANG ON IM HOOKED  zzzzzzzzzzz) i make it fun by fishing 2lb main line and 3 kilo trace, trying nearly every lure and plastic in my box and  i even bring out the fly gear and try out some homemade flys. no point sitting at home waiting for the reports to come in..get out and enjoy some light takle fishing, bream have also been firing up, got 4 hooters from the one snag last thursday. also been doing really well on flathead, snapper and skippy in the harbours one flatty went 42cm. just wish i could get out deep and enjoy some bottom bouncy or jiggin but im stuck to landbased and me kayak..ohwell might have to ring the bank soon:P

hope everyone has an awsome easter..loving the 5 days off..beer+fishing+no work...ahh what could a man want more:D happy travels and hope everyone gets a good fish or two..looking foward to all the pics

happy fishing

Daily bag limits?

Hey all.

So my plan is to do an alnighter on the busso jetty and i was wondering can i keep two days bags limits because its different days? not shore so i better ask.

If so how would i prove it if someone asks?

Im not saying thatim going to keep the two days bag limits but just wondering it it's legal or illegal.

Cheers danno.

Black Pete Dillfish Mirror teaser.

There's no doubting the effectiveness of mirror teasers in attracting billfish/YFT/Mackerel/wahoo etc to a lure spread, and while there are numerous mirror teasers on the market, one of the very best is the Black Pete Dillfish teaser. Nose-weighted to keep its head down at high speeds (it therefore sinks at rest), the overall colour scheme of the Dillfish teaser is day-glo orange and white, which combines with those highly reflective mirrored surfaces to throw out heaps of fish-attracting flash.  The mirrors on Dillfish teasers are fixed with stainless screws and siliconed in place to prevent saltwater intrusion underneath - a major problem with other mirror teasers where the silver backing corrodes and the teaser loses its all important flash after just a few trips offshore.

We stock the medium size version which is the most popular size (same size as the witchdoctor)

Fishwrecked Special $     with free rigging and done properly by us.

After a Lemax ProTiny what shops have the best prices?

Hi guys,

Went to Anglers Spot today and saw the Lemax Pro Tiny 6'+ which was priced at $122.00 would I be able to find these any cheaper? Was also recommended the Aijiking reel which definitely looked the part was around the $80 mark. If I could get a good softplastics combo for around $180 I would be a happy man. What shop has the best prices?

Cheers,

Eco Beach & Broome

Hi All

Heading up to Eco beach and Broome (5 days each) on Friday. Just wondering if anyone has any info on best tides to fish landbased?

Also any areas firing at the moment worth a crack at?

Have already had some good help from few FW members but any locals or others that have been fishing recently either Eco or Broome or Jacks Creek that can shed some light on best times and also best lures that would be great.

Getting pretty pumped up and hopefully can get onto some good fish.

Cheers

Jurien Bay for Easter

Hi all

Team gates is heading up to Jurien Bay tomorrow for 5 days and the weather forecast isn't looking too flash for fishing out wide.

As we've not been there before, was looking for some guidance from seasoned Jurien bayers on what to expect with the current weather conditions?

Friday looks the best day, but I've been told that it gets quite windy up there and you don't want to be out on the water when it comes up....pretty normal for most places really, but I'd rather err on the side of caution for our first trip there.

I'd rather fish from the beach than risk going out if the conditions aren't any good, but was also wondering whether there's shelter within the bay or close inshore for some light tackle boat fishing....if so, what's the target species...herring, whiting, skippy, tailor, etc...all good stuff in my book.

Thanks in advance of your comments.

regards
r.gates...

PS. if there's any other FW members up there, hope we bump into each other...will be good to put a face to the names!

Have a safe and enjoyable Easter
