Warroora :-) Station - camping & fishing
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Thu, 2019-02-21 16:50Looking at heading to Warra Station in May ?? (undecided, plenty of time yet), just my brother and myself, camping gear and my 4.3 tinny. Would like to see the area before it all changes and gets restricted. I'm pretty much aware of the restrictions and necessities. (water, fuel, toilet, power, recovery gear)
Looking at the maps, Warra station has a marine reserve ( Pelican ) pretty much in the middle of the station on the coast and extending 5-6km offshore ( I think, roughly google mapped it)
So my options are to camp north (14 mile) or head south of the marine park and camp down that way still on Warra Station (Nolans Nook ?? or close to it within the boundary)
For the guys who may have fished north or south before and camped, what in your opinion was the best or is the best ? Now i assume north would be more fished being closer to Coral Bay but that is just an assumption. I prefer to pretty much use lures only, so my style suits shallow water then heading out a bit to chase pelagics and drop jigs on anything interesting.
I chose May as I am hoping to miss the April crowd (kids) and arrive before the June crowd (nomads), again just assuming, there are bound to be plenty of nomads at 14 mile.
Also would be nice but not necessary to be able to have a small fire at night, hence May - October I believe fires are allowed.
Now if you have an area that you think is better (camping, fishing, access) then please share your opinion. Not really looking to head further than Coral Bay at this stage.
Just looking to get back to basics with the bro, beach camping, fishing and a beer as he is coming from over east.
Cheers
Scotty

Mandurah fishing offshore
Submitted by barnes on Thu, 2019-02-21 12:29Hello all
this was a discussion 8 years back I have seen in the site.
But I’m in the same situation. Moved down from up north and now running out of the cut, hitting spots out 35 m , behind the five and all over.
managed 1 x due but not much else.
any clues as to moon phase or tides for these fish is it any time of day or dawn and dusk better?
anchor and burley, or drift?
any information appreciated

Fuel shortage
Submitted by Fathom on Wed, 2019-02-20 19:46Went to Bunnings in Cairns and bought every one of their jerry cans, loaded them into a maxi taxi and on the way back to the boat I bought 2 x 44's as well. I aint running out of fuel on this trip. Strapped 1 of the 44's to the bow, 1 on the marlin board and the rest went inside, I made it to another country.

Fishing with my oldest son
Submitted by PJim on Tue, 2019-02-19 06:38My oldest boy Jarrad is down from Geraldton at the moment and had some free time yesterday so we headed out in my little boat to chase some KGW. I took him to a spot I have that produces consistantly from September through to about March. I have been fishing this spot on and off for over 40 years, initially with dad when I was a little tackler.
We got to the spot about 9am and started drifting with 2 hookpaternoster rigs and strips off squid. It wasnt long into the drift when Jarrad boated a mid 30s kgw and from then on it was pretty constant action with 3 hours of fishing producing 19 keepers from 32 to 40cm with quite a few fish from 28 to 32 cm thrown back.
Was heaps of fun especially as I only get to fish with him once or twice a year due to both our work commitments.

Furuno 587 - Advice on Furuno guru in Perth Area
Submitted by kangas87 on Fri, 2019-02-15 13:12Hi Guys,
I have had a Furuno 587 teamed up with a TM260 1k transducer for around 2 years.
I have found the unit is very hit and miss with its showing in 50m plus.
I have changed through the TGV settings, gone between 1k to 600, ensured the bottom lock is small and played with the gain manual and auto. Its getting to the point where im thing of swapping the display to ensure the transducer is working correctly. I have also had an experienced Furuno 585 operator onboard checking the settings and also has him scratching his head.
Does anyone have any ideas or maybe even know of a business who help me out around the Perth area?
Cheers in advance guys.

Cleaning up rouge ropes, pots, floats and boats
Submitted by Ayamigo on Wed, 2019-02-13 20:51After a week in rotto with my cray pots I had my first floats cut off by a boat since the new weighted rope rule. What I realised, theres no chance of finding you pot unless you dive the area... the weights sink the rope. Never really thought about it before until it happened.
I also noticed the number of boats blasting through heavily potted areas at a pace where there's no chance of changing course to miss the odd rope an float on the surface. Over the week I saw at least 9 cut ropes sitting on the surface. (In depths needing less than 20m rope so the weights don't apply) most had so much sludge on the rope, clearly no one was there to look for them.
Lastly, I snorkeled out to the back of the barrier reefs at Longreach and saw that about 60% of the floats our there were attached to pots that were so rotted some were barely even a frame, another 20% were simply tangled in the reef with no pot at all.
My first impulse was to want to clean up these rouge ropes, floats but you can't tamper with anyone else's gear. I think there should be some sort of 'clean up WA water day' where divers can get some sort of amnesty to drag all this crap to shore so fisheries can dispose of it. Particularly at rotto where there is so much gear rotting in the water it's only going to get worse and worse.

Blooding the new Polycraft out of Mandurah
Submitted by BigJevans on Tue, 2019-02-12 08:12Tagged along with the old boy for the maiden fishing voyage of his new Polycraft Brumby 4.8
Took it pretty casual didn't jump in the boat til 7:00, headed out through the cut and headed to the 30's to look for some birds.
Action plan for the day was to get the old boy onto some tuna to get the boat blooded.
We spotted a patch of birds around the 28m mark, set my rod out with a skirt, just finished setting the old boys and about to put it in the holder ZIIIIIIING, thing was screaming in my hand.
Passed it over to the old boy, ZIIIING my rod starts screaming.
Double header couple of Southern Blueys.
Bleed them and into the bucket, set my line again, winding the old boys drag off getting ready to set it, ZIIIING mine goes again, sorry old boy but duty calls :P
The school took off and was about 8:00 now and the Southerly was just starting, decided to head North and plan to make our way back in through the Mandurah mouth.
Little bit of a plod along, no real signs of anything happening, still had the skirts out the back, ZIIIING mine goes again, Old boy starts bringing his line in and gets smashed within a few seconds, two more Blueys these two better size than the last.
Spot another pack of birds so make our way slowly, aproach the birds and cirle them, trying to round up the school and then it was on.
Landed another 3 which took us to 8 onboard, thought the limit was 4 each, double checked to find out it was 3 so 2 went back in and we made out way home :P
Back at the jetty in the marina by 10:00.
Old boy was over the moon, first trip on the new Poly and he's been wanting to target the tuna for a while, had 3 double hook ups, cant buy days like that.
Clean up at home and 1 fish becomes fresh sashimi lunch :)
