Please Explain
Submitted by Broome lad on Fri, 2015-11-20 13:56Hi everyone went out to bait the pots this morning after a week up north working and three days not being able to get out due to the weather fingers crossed might get a feed tomorrow , trying to get the hang of the way things work down here after 25 years in Broome . But I was shocked this morning coming back in on the inside of garden island to see at least a dozen huge big pink snapper floating on the surface after only three day ago attempting to get out seeing a massive school finning on the surface looking very healthy is this something that happens or is is the water toxic in Cockburn sound ?? And affecting the fish and crabs .

for discussion - interferring with gear
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2015-11-20 13:48The situation. This morning we are checking our pots and come across a cray rope without floats, the end floating on the surface. Its a hazard to boaties. We mark its location and tie a (cheap) spare life jacket on the end.
I reported its location to fisheries.
They have been out and recovered my life jacket. Loaded the rope on the winch and start to pull and the bridle has snapped. Pot is stuck and still there. So i ask the question. Having done the right thing, having marked it for the safety of other boats, having marked and reported its location. After fisheries have tried and not been able to recover it. I asked if i could now try? Fisheries have responded, but before i post it, i'm interested in peoples thoughts.
Go.

A Good Thing ?
Submitted by The Saint on Fri, 2015-11-20 12:45
Personally, I reckon this would not be a bad thing.
Not many size ones about this time of year and would definatelly help to keep the dickheads away from the undersize crabs !

Jurien Bay - Feb
Submitted by JAB86 on Fri, 2015-11-20 12:06Hi,
Heading to Jurien Bay at the end of Feb for a few nights and haven't fished up that way before. Wondered if there are many here that have and what kind of species might be on the bite that time of year.
Also gonna be doing a couple of dives for crays so any advice on what kinda depths they are usually in up there would be appreciated.
Thanks

Good Large Filleting Boards?
Submitted by fizzywhizzy on Fri, 2015-11-20 09:54Hi there, Not sure if this is posted in the right place or not...
Just wondering what people use (other than ironing boards) for large filleting boards when they get their fish home?
Found a good Rapala one but can only get from the US. Basically something that's washable/durable plastic.
Sick of hubby getting p*/* with his set up!!
Thanks for any help

Degree in Recreational fishing law required
Submitted by Chinbald on Fri, 2015-11-20 08:37Just heard on the radio that the snapper laws in Shark Bay gulfs have been relaxed, with an allowance of 5 kg of snapper fillet in possession. Guess you will have to leave skin on for road transport ID.

Rod Butt Protectors
Submitted by Willlo on Thu, 2015-11-19 14:44Anybody know where I can get some of those butt protectors locally ? The ones they have been using on IFISH that slip onto the butt of your rod instead of using a gimble belt. Cheers in advance.

advice on purchasing a first spear gun please.
Submitted by MandurahMatt on Wed, 2015-11-18 21:01Hi guys about a year ago i got got my SCUBA ticket, on a recent trip to the south coast i got the oportunity to use a mates spear gun and shoot the first and only fish i have ever shot in my life. We had a Great time and brung in a seafood feast of the likes i have never seen before. After doing a shallow dive (11m) and getting a few green lips and a mixed bag of southern and western crays and enjoying the spectacular seenery and abundent marine life around the reef including Pink Snapper, Queen Snapper, Western blue grouper, we fed a big healthy vibrant Blue and his two girl friends an abb that my mate had broken the shell on and couldnt be mesured properly so would more than likely be eaten by fish anyway if released, it was one of the best dives ive done since getting my ticket.
After this dive it was decided to head out deeper (21m) and see if we could get onto a few fish for esky and find some more productive cray ground. Due to the depth the hooker could only suply air to one diver so my other mate stayed on the boat. Ryan got a few Queenys n some more crays while i followed. I spoted a good size Queeny n started to follow but Ryan was too quick chased after it as he went after the Queeny i spoted some movement out of the corner of my eye and turned to see a big old blue sitting under a Ledge on his own, i was in awe of this fish n just sat and watched him for a minute, as i did i noticed the diference in conditon of this fish compared to the other Grouper we had seen in the Shallower ground.
I thought about the arguments i had seen from people online some arguing its better to leave "old breaders" alone and others saying if a fish is close to the end of its life cycle why not take it and let the younger fish go to continue breading for longer. Thease arguments between wana be self educated "marine bioligists" have always amused me, im pretty happy from what ive seen that fisheries are doing a good job.
So weighing up my options this old boy was still just sitting there unlike his younger brothers n sisters that swim off in a hurry once spooked, that i have seen countless numbers of since ive started diving. I took my shot n made the first fish ive speared a cracker, that all off the 19 people who had a share of it and the rest of the days catch say it was delishous.
So now im looking to get a gun of my own, One mate had a Cressy n the other a Rob Allen both 1200 rail guns but not sure i want to splash out $400 for one yet can anyone recomend anything around the $150-$200 mark that is amy good or should i hold out till next year n spend the extra?

Advice required on very long boat trip
Submitted by Fathom on Wed, 2015-11-18 16:52Been asked to help a mate deliver a 56ft boat to PNG from the Gold Coast QLD, then off to Darwin to stay on another boat.... If you could only take 2-3 rods with you, what would you take? I have a TLD 25 on a beastmaster, a stradic 6000 on a terez and other crap, I'll probably take the stradic/terez combo but will need something for Dogtooth and possibly stickfaces. I dont want to be wasting time on Marlin and stuff but we will be most likely hook a few so I will need to stop them.
I am considering towing 1 lure the whole way (amongst the spread of others) 1 in the water at all times and tick off the species it gets...suggestions?
Thanks for any info/knowledge you may have, I've never fished that area before and a couple of places we are going hardly anyone has fished.....apparently :)

Feedback on 40hp, 4 stroke Yamaha and Suzuki outboards
Submitted by Poppy on Wed, 2015-11-18 06:24Hi guys. I own a 4.5m fibreglass Pongrass Surtfmaster. Quite an old boat, which has been converted from a forward control to a tiller steer. It is powered, at present, by a 40hp Mercury Lightning XR (Tohatsu), which goes really well. At my age (heading towards 75) I am looking to get away from pull starting a 3 cylinder motor, as well as having to manually lift the motor. Mixing fuel is also a pain. So am looking to re-power with a similar size 4 stroke with electric start, power trim and tilt.
I have searched the net to try and find some non-biased comments and it is difficult. At this point I am interested in either a Yammy or a Suzy. I had a Yammy 90hp 2 stroke about 10 years ago and I loved it. I've never had anything to do with a Suzuki, but understand they are good. I would appreciate any comments from fishos who have run either of these motors.
Thanks in advance.

cliff Jig pic
Submitted by Chinbald on Tue, 2015-11-17 19:39After a post on the for sale a couple of crew asked for a pic. Plus my PB land based baldy lifted with it. Before digital cameras. Good luck gaffing or straight lifting that from 20 metres. Have lifted 5 to 5.5kg bur after that it gets a bit touch and go.
