Advice required on very long boat trip
Submitted by Fathom on Wed, 2015-11-18 16:52Been asked to help a mate deliver a 56ft boat to PNG from the Gold Coast QLD, then off to Darwin to stay on another boat.... If you could only take 2-3 rods with you, what would you take? I have a TLD 25 on a beastmaster, a stradic 6000 on a terez and other crap, I'll probably take the stradic/terez combo but will need something for Dogtooth and possibly stickfaces. I dont want to be wasting time on Marlin and stuff but we will be most likely hook a few so I will need to stop them.
I am considering towing 1 lure the whole way (amongst the spread of others) 1 in the water at all times and tick off the species it gets...suggestions?
Thanks for any info/knowledge you may have, I've never fished that area before and a couple of places we are going hardly anyone has fished.....apparently :)

Feedback on 40hp, 4 stroke Yamaha and Suzuki outboards
Submitted by Poppy on Wed, 2015-11-18 06:24Hi guys. I own a 4.5m fibreglass Pongrass Surtfmaster. Quite an old boat, which has been converted from a forward control to a tiller steer. It is powered, at present, by a 40hp Mercury Lightning XR (Tohatsu), which goes really well. At my age (heading towards 75) I am looking to get away from pull starting a 3 cylinder motor, as well as having to manually lift the motor. Mixing fuel is also a pain. So am looking to re-power with a similar size 4 stroke with electric start, power trim and tilt.
I have searched the net to try and find some non-biased comments and it is difficult. At this point I am interested in either a Yammy or a Suzy. I had a Yammy 90hp 2 stroke about 10 years ago and I loved it. I've never had anything to do with a Suzuki, but understand they are good. I would appreciate any comments from fishos who have run either of these motors.
Thanks in advance.

cliff Jig pic
Submitted by Chinbald on Tue, 2015-11-17 19:39After a post on the for sale a couple of crew asked for a pic. Plus my PB land based baldy lifted with it. Before digital cameras. Good luck gaffing or straight lifting that from 20 metres. Have lifted 5 to 5.5kg bur after that it gets a bit touch and go.

WTB Falcon BA Canopy
Submitted by Cold Feet on Tue, 2015-11-17 16:14Hi Guys, I am after a White fibreglass Canopy to buy, for a Ford Falcon BA UTE.
My Ute is White, so I am after a White canopy, preferbly like a Carry Boy style, with the tilt up side windows, so I can get to my gear inside, without crawling in the rear door.
There are a few on Bumtree, but really expensive.., and miles away to view, and I am often dissapointed by some guys opinion of "Excellent Condition"
Willing to pay good cash money for a quality Canopy. Will need the keys for the windows and locks though, to ensure legitimate seller.
Will collect within 50km of Safety Bay.
Sometimes we all get pissed off. What do we do about it?
Submitted by SQUIDDLY on Tue, 2015-11-17 14:04Recently I was trolling through the Brag Board as usual and once again I saw a photo that made my blood boil, really boil.
In this case it was of another dude showing off (Brag Board POTM I couldn't believe he wanted that!) another speared big Blue Grouper, hooka in the background.
I made a rare post that dared to say something deemed as negative and asked for a bit of a reply on the circumstances of the catch.
WOW!!!
Once again did I kick a hornet nest.
Most replies were to the effect of "How Dare You?" "He did nothing wrong!" "How can you comment you don't know shit" etc.
The reponse from the guy in shot was such a flippent careless reply that I realised he had no clue what I was on about and I just couldn't let it go. Just how many blokes look at this post and have no clue either I thought. Turns out HEAPS was the answer.
I'm simply astounded that so many of the site members only send in the typical "top fish" to those posting, nothing further. If it stirs you enough to make a post it can be with thought cant it? It all just becomes meaningless. So you have 500 posts? If they are all the same ego boost to all you post too then really, who cares?
As I saw the posts coming in both good and bad I couldn't help but wonder if I had done something wrong. Even Adam was dragged in and to my surprise his comment of "this old chesnut again" was at the top.
Ok so your over anyone bringing up a topic you've seen before? Sorry Mr G but without continued discussion of some practises out there we participate in, legal or not we don't get a set of laws, guidelines or just plain fishing morals that allow us all to continue to do what we love.
So for me when I see a great fish or outstanding catch I'll post my back pat with some feeling.
Just as when l let the dude that wants the same from a catch that is TO ME just plain wrong the next time I see one, I'd like to think I can let him know how I feel as well.
For me this site is fantastic for seeing whats going on throughout WA and some of you guys make some amazing catches. Take your pats on the back with glee. At the same time if and when someone gets pissed off about your post take on board the comment, have a little think and THEN reply if you think it's warranted.
Beware, to all who question a post. There are some super touchy guys who don't like being called out on anything but you will quickly find out though if they have any idea or not. So have the balls I urge you to pat the good shot on the back and speak your mind on the ones that shit you.
If you want POTM be willing to take a negative post as well, could be educational for you.
In the case in question here, the to and fro left me with but one conclusion. The guy had absolutly no idea of the species lifespan, ease of expliotation and lack of sporting effort, OR he is a guy who simply doesn't give shit about those things.
Both options to me are no excuse to do it. Legal or not.
The east coast saw this specie's variant all but wiped out by dickhead spearo's and that stigma sticks to all us spearo's weather we are aware or not. We get to choose the fish we spear unlike the more random practise of rod and reel, so a big blue, an undersize fish or an over-size cod is just not acceptable behavior to me.
We dont need to hide behide legality to know something is just not on do we?? Come on lads.
So go on and call me whatever you like and tell me I'm an opinionated wanker. I dont give one flying toss about that. When I see some Knob doing the like next time, I'll ask the same of them as I did with this bloke.
Then Maybe just Maybe some of you who may have thought nothing of it will stay your trigger and show your kids a photo of a live one as it feeds from your hand instead.
Thanks too to constructive critisism of me and the offering up of good ideas from some of the posters, keep that stuff up too.

Yellowfin at Gemini wreck
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Tue, 2015-11-17 13:07Just thought I would let the pelagic guys on here know that I had yellowfin tuna free jumping at the Gemini wreck yesterday.
They looked to be around the 7 - 10kg models and bloody fat.
Did a quick troll with skirts but no luck and will definitely try next time I am out.

Shore Catch Wangara - Getting Closer Update
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2015-11-17 11:22It has been a while since I have posted anything so here is a Shore Catch update. I really respect Members comments so please feel free to make some, particularly about stock you would like to see.
Following planning approval, we are now progressing rapidly to our opening in Wangara. I will do FW Members “soft openings” in late November early December, with sausage sizzle and some free 6’0 Mustard hooks, so we can get feedback before we open to the public.
The showroom has been our highest priority. Demo, floor sanding and painting, and it is finally taking shape.

Fixtures and fittings are progressing with freezers, POS system, counter, display cabinet, benches and other associated items being obtained. The custom rod & reel holders for the showroom floor have been designed and are being constructed. Security bars have been commissioned and will be put in before we hold anything of real value. Relevant insurances have been sourced and supplementary statutory licences are due in the next week or two.

The preliminary design for the window graphics is complete and will be finalised and printed in the next couple of weeks.
We have been spending a lot of time getting the stock range together. As I have indicated before, we do not intend to operate a tackle shop. We seek to provide quality items at a fair price in one place, that you would normally have to “hunt for and evaluate”. It is about provision of quality products and service that Members would want, and we will publish a full stock list in the future. Burley, selected bait (fish, cray, crab), second hand goods, shirts, graphic products, selected tackle and accessories probably summarises our proposed offerings at this stage. We will be a “fishing gift shop for your friends to buy you stuff”. A few images of recent items are shown below.

I finally got to go for a fish on Saturday, in the MAAC comp (the weather has been crap for afternoon fishing over the last 2 months!). My bag was ok, but nothing special. I must say that I like to fish the comps to get out there once a month, without fail in different conditions, and spend time with the knowledgeable fishos at the MAAC during the weigh in and presentation (winning means nothing).
Couldn’t buy a 200mm sand whiting (the one in the photo shrunk and I didn’t weigh it in) but at least I have my vacuum packed “pinkie lollies” for when the ban is over.
I look forward to meeting you and will publish further updates as things progress.

Exmouth last week in October.
Submitted by Humpback on Mon, 2015-11-16 12:59I read a lot of reports on this site but never post to much thought I should have a go since you lads have provided many highlights this year, especially during the footy season!!!
Went for our annual trip up north this year, was planning on going to Coral Bay to avoid the Exmouth shark plague, however at short notice there was little accomidation and too expensive so Exmouth it was. Suprised that time of the year the accomidation was very cheap for a good house on the canals.
Sharks lived up to the expectations however after a few days we felt a few things did help. No deck wash, turn off live well and keep dead fish on board. We could then get 3-4 drifts in (if we were lucky) before they turned up. It didn't seem to matter what depth we we're at, we had to keep doing this tactic from 35m to 350m as it was the same situation.
In total we fished 5 days and got really lucky with the weather. Before and after was windy, might be something in the old tale that winds tend to drop on the full moon!!!
1st day we got into plenty of Scarlet Sea Perch, Rankin, Cobia and Mackies. Day 2 we couldn't leave the floater out as the Mackies kept buzzing the boat. Kept 3 and released 4 in about 30mins, some days you can't even fine one then other days can't get away from them. Nice problem to have! Days 3 and 4 went to westside to chase Rubies. We found them in a big bunch on 300m line top of the drop off as Ryan has explained in many of his comments. Was nice to tick them off my bucket list.
Those of you going up that way we found coming into South Passage on low tide a breeze this year, the new ramp was perfect even on the bottom of the tide.
Will try and put up a few photos hope they work out!
Cheers Humpback

Radio problems
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2015-11-15 10:34Having problems with my 27 meg radio. Im a bit peeved because its relatively new.
I can hear plenty of chatter. Other boats loging on & rescue ops responding. But they are not receiving me.
The little boat gets bashed about when travelling so the radio gets shaken up. That may be the cause but I would have thought it wouldnt work at all if that were the case.
Obviously its an important bit of kit so need to get it resolved.
Any guesses why i can receive but not transmit?

Sea temperature hit 24.2 degrees off Mindarie today
Submitted by beeroclock on Sat, 2015-11-14 17:03Took the wife and kids 35 odd kilometres west of Mindarie today to see if we could find some whales. at about 15kms out i looked at the sea temp and couldnt believe it was right on 23 degrees, kept slowly getting warmer then at 25 km out the dragonfly showed 24.2 degrees then slowly dropped back to 23 at about 35km out. There was a large school of little southern blues that looked about 40 -50 cm long busting up on the surface out there but not a whale in sight anywhere. 2 weeks ago we were 10 km behind rotto and i never saw the temp get over 19 degrees lots of whales though. Did anybody else get high temp readings today or is my dragonfly playing up! hopefully the reading was right thats gotta be a good sign for the up coming mackie season! cheers dave

Owner split ring pliers.
Submitted by cruzy111 on Sat, 2015-11-14 13:55Purchased a pair of owner gp20 split ring pliers a few months ago. Was assured they were quality and stainless. I dont mind paying for top quality. Well trust me these aint stainless steel. After five trips out in the boat and a few reef flat walks and being washed and spray with inox in between sees them just about binnable. Will be buying a pair of cheapys again. Last shimano ones lasted 15 years and were still shiny when they eventually broke. Any recommendations from anyone on some quality small split ring pliers that are stainless and will last?
