Crayfish worms/parasite
Submitted by Paul_86 on Tue, 2015-11-24 18:42Gday everyone,
I just received this photo from a mate. Seems like some kind of worm of some sort has come out of the crayfish. He said the cray looked normal before he dropped it in the pot, boiled it whole for 8 mins, strained the hot water out of the pot, filled it back up with ice water and left to cool down. Come back 5 minutes later and all that crap was floating on top of the water.
Any ideas?
He said the flesh looked fine and presumed it has come out of the head of the cray. I've done some googling myself but couldn't come up with anything

Lawrence Elite 5 Boat Current Position setting??
Submitted by Cold Feet on Tue, 2015-11-24 16:27Hi guys,
Does anyone know how to keep the boats current position in the centre of the Lawrence Elite 5 chart when riding around without a waypoint destination?
I have to zoom out, find my location and put the crosshairs on the position of the boat and then zoom back in - there must be a centre boat position function available?
Looked at the manual, and only reference I can see that may change this is the COG or North Up Option?
Appreciate any help on this..
Thanks,

VHF verses 27 meg
Submitted by C.P on Tue, 2015-11-24 16:08My 27 meg radio is out of action - can't figure out whats wrong
So may need to get a new one - again (the boat has had two already)
I think one of the reasons the radios keep failing is because the little 4.5 mtr tinnie get bashed about in all but the calmest of seas. The radio gets shaken up.
So its a general question - grateful for any info
What are the differences between VHF & 27 meg?
Is a VHF more likely to be damaged by the shuddering?
Is a hand held any use or is the range too little?

Crayfish - setose or not? - edited photos added
Submitted by Percula on Tue, 2015-11-24 12:32Hi Guys
Question is, how hairy does the crayfish endopodite need to be before it is classed as setose?
Every female I have caught this year has some sort of hair on the claws, very very minimal though. Do you throw these ones back?
I have caught one other which had slightly longer hair, so this was easily different.
I rang fisheries to ask, and they said as soon as there is any hair, throw them back. He said it needs to be bare bare. Is this true?
Anyone have any photos to show?
Thanks

First Cray Dive Advice
Submitted by Industrymanboy on Mon, 2015-11-23 12:19Fish Wrecked People,
Myself & a Mate are planning on going on our first dive for crayfish this coming Saturday.
With no pre-determined marks or experience, our rough plan is to head out towards the FFB and spot an area worth diving using our sounder and the presence of others cray pots.
The question I wanted to pose is how close should I dive to other people's pots? is there any other unwritten rules I should know about.
Cheers

FIN NOR Customer Service
Submitted by psion on Mon, 2015-11-23 12:10In todays land of poor service I thought I should share a good story.
I bought the 5.6" 100lb fin-nor OH rod (yea that long ago it's successor has been discontinued). I paired it up with the Talica 16II. figure it would be a beast to chase those big sambos and the odd shark.
spooled the reel with 80lb braid and then, due to work commitments (FIFO) never got the chance to use it. So I packed it away.
Anyway I uppacked it last month pending a sambo session and decided to replace the leader. holding the rod at 90 degrees I peeled the line off and the rod splintered between the 3rd and 4th eyes and then broke.
Now it gets good
I sent the pictures to Fin nor with an explantation and stated that I knew it was out of warranty and wasn't expecting a replacement, but rather, I was looking for reasons that the rod failed. (in the advent that it was how I stored it,etc. so I could ensure it didn't happen to my other rods)
After 3 weeks of "techncical review" Fin-nor concluded that it was a manufacture default and even though it was "way out" of its warrantly period they are replacing the Rod.
Go figure
Nice one FIN NOR, take a bow.

help with reel choice
Submitted by JoRn on Sun, 2015-11-22 22:43ive been tasked with buying an outfit for a mate who is coming to sharkbay with me later this year.
im looking for a 5000/6000 size shimano and really impressed with the new stradics. but how would go for casting lures and retreiving bibbed lures?
the other option is the biomaster sw.
the only reason i ask is one year i brought a 4000 twinpower for this occassion and teh reel did not have enough power when working the lures - not mentioning when an angry mackie is on the other end

cray season over!
Submitted by sandbar on Sun, 2015-11-22 20:25A big thank you to the piece of sh1t that has taken my pots. Co-ords have been dived on and they are gone. Yet when I put them in the spot there was not 1 pot within 300mtrs of them. Yesterday and today there would be atleast 50 pots within 200 meter area.
So far they have cost over $700 without a result.
Whoever does better not let me witness them because the outcome will not be good!

Craypot winch 2
Submitted by ranmar850 on Sun, 2015-11-22 12:07As we can't add pix to an existing thread we didn't start, I'll start another one, but this for for a glass boat. Glass boats, particularly older ones in the 5-6metre range, can be really difficult to do a good job on due to the shapes of the narrow gunwhales and coamings--by comparison, any ali boat is a piece of cake. I have seen some really horrible instals on glass boats--gunwhales hacked, or bloody great brackets over the gunwhales to mount them inside, so you are banging into them all the time.
I looked at the Dommi for a long time, and had the advantage of having a fellow Dommi owner just up the road with one mounted. His, frankly, is horrible, involving cutting big holes in the glass and lifting it up to clear the top coaming on a big wooden block. My original plan involved fabbing up a ply box, heavily glassed, then glassed to the boat permanently. problem with this is that I don't want it in the way for at least 6 months of the year, and doing a good, aesthetically pleasing glassing job to fix the box to the boat is not easy. Nor did I want to weaken the side of the boat bu cutting big holes.
So I fabbed up the box from 12mm marine ply , and glassed it with three-four laminations . The winch is secured by 3 8mm studs--I needed to source some s/s M8 threaded rod as 2 of the original studs were too short. I could actually fit the winch inside the box with minimal clearance underneath without doing a gunwhale cutout, at perfect height to match the tipper roller, meaning I only needed four holes through the gunwhale--3 x 10mm for the winch studs, and a 20mm hole for the cable. So why the hell do I need to glass the box on? It was a neat fit around the countours of the gunwhale already, so I made it better by laying some body filler onto the edges, Inox on the hull as a release agent, then, hey presto, a perfect fit. Trimmed it up and gelcoated. The studs are actually taking the pull, particularly the 2 outer ones, and the box is really being compressed under load. The two outers run through a 6mm ali plate to spread the load.
So I ended up with a very tidy setup, held by three studs with nylocs--literally a 5 minute job with a socket and ratchet to get them off, lift the winch, disconnect the cables, plug the holes with ss bolts, and it is gone until next whites.
For controls, i couldn't see a good way of using the foot switch supplied--these are great on the foredeck of a big boat, retrieving the anchor, but I didn't want to mount it in the deck, or have to wedge myself hard against the side of the boat, against the roll, if it were mounted inside the gunwhales. That could be a very stop-start bit of winching, spitting catch out the neck each time it stopped. I wanted to use a solenoid for control, to cut down the length of cable run battery to winch. Power is supplied straight from the Aux power isolator to a 80amp waterproof breaker, then isolator, then solenoid. All this is mounted up under the outboard well, out off sight and most splashing. The solenoid is switched by one of those Narva isolators with the removal key, mounted out of the way , but right where you need it--key is removed when not in use, so it can't be snagged or turned on accidentally if the isolator is left on. Bottom picture is with the key removed. Key cannot fall out when it is in the on position.
Mattdee's tipper is mounted on the other side--too early up here yet for any real crays, which is a good thing as my gearbox upper oil seal has sprung a leak and I'm waiting on parts before I put pots in the water. Maybe end of this coming week, with any luck.
