$500 cash to anyone with a boat who can take me out for an occassional midweek fish
Submitted by paulsmez on Sat, 2014-11-22 14:53I know this is a long shot but…
I’m looking for someone with a decent size boat (6m+) who is available to take me out for the occasional midweek session in return for $500 cash per trip. (early morning to late afternoon).
Preferably launching from Hillarys, Ocean Reef or Mindarie (I’m in Woodvale).
I don’t need to go out too far, maybe up to 5k’s, and I’m a fair weather fisherman so only on days with light swell/wind. Short notice trips to suit the weather are fine as I work for myself. Weekends are out though. I prefer to anchor up and berley rather than troll so not much fuel involved.
The skipper is welcome to fish too, I just need a boat to fish from, not a fishing guide. I’ve got my own tackle and bait.
Anyway, send me a message if you’re interested or know someone that might be.
Cheers
Paul

Qualified Home/Mobile Mechanic v Boat Store
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sat, 2014-11-22 14:30Interested in everyone's opinions on getting my 6hp tohatsu serviced for the 3 month service.
I am leaning toward getting a home/mobile mechanic to do it as although there is a greater deal of security using one of the bigger boat stores (you would hope) I know that my little motor is going to be given to the apprentice to work on and would rather have it looked/worked on by someone with experience. Some may scoff at why I am so concerned about my little 6hp but it's my pride and joy as part of my first little river setup for me and my 4y old plus it still cost me $1700.
Has anyone used a good home/mobile mechanic NOR that I can contact or would others suggest sticking to the boat store?
Cheers
JF

River
Submitted by lachieH on Sat, 2014-11-22 09:29went down on the kayaks last night, dropped a couple crab eats on the cliff side of mount henry bridge, then started flicking around some extreme metal slices around for tailor. I think I got a couple hits but no tailor and no crabs either. We did see Dolphins in Rossmoyne herding up bream or tailor, and thought that maybe it spooked them? They were heading towards Kent street wier so we thought that they were probably gone. Did anybody else catch anything last night?

Wind on leaders for mackerel fishing
Submitted by joycey on Fri, 2014-11-21 22:04Hi all,
I'm setting myself up for trolling for mackies and tuna around metro area this summer
Just after some terminal gear advice.
What "lb" and length of wind on leader do I need?
Also is it ok to use snap swivels for attaching lures or do they open up ?
Cheers for tips,
Joycey

Australian native eaten in Africa
Submitted by bushbeaver on Fri, 2014-11-21 14:20Following uncle's post today about the whopper Murray cod found in Canning vale, here's one I came across myself in October. The story goes:
Every year I visit Lake Phobane in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa (expat), to catch largemouth black bass (the type of fish in my avatar).
Now a couple of years ago, a private citizen who had some redclaw yabbies in a tank, started introducing them into the lake. They have flourished to the extent that I frequently catch Bass which have the yabby tentacles still sticking out of their gullets.
The first three picture show a rat of around 1.5kg, which has first regurgitated a "brush hog" (plastic creature bait) before being brought on board the boat. Sticking out of the gullet are the claws of a redclaw yabby, as well as some other angler's line, which the silly little bugger must have busted off fairly recently. He must have had a big appetite for a fish of his size!
The second to last picture is of a slightly better fish of around 2.5kg, just to illustrate what a largemouth black bass looks like. They are caught on soft plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits, jigs, surface lures etc. These fish are native to the USA, and were introduced to South African waters as sport fish around the 1920'S. Almost all dams and rivers in S.A. nowadays have bass in them. My P.B is a modest 4.22kg, but would still be considered a trophy fish in South Africa. In their native USA, they can reach 24lb, and bass fishing over there is a BIG $$$$ competitive sport.
The last picture is from 2011: Another rat which had regurgitated a half digested bird.
So, just like the Murray cod, they eat everything!

Catalina/Daiwa High speed query
Submitted by greyheads1 on Fri, 2014-11-21 13:22Prompted by Belly's Stella question the other day, i thought I would float another. Some time back I owned for a short period of time a Sol II 3000H which when under resistance was almost impossible to turn the handle of. It would spin freely and super smooth when not under load but any weight on the end of the line (herring, small weed etc) seemed to have a massive impact on winding resistance.
Anyway, I recently got a 5000H Catalina and seem to be having the same problem? I have Hi gear Certates which are perfect and nothing similar has been experienced in any of the shimanos or other Daiwas owned. I should add that despite the resistance the Cat is really smooth and pump-wind scenario is fine but a ball ache to retrieve flat out against any loading (like even a few ounces of lead!).
Anyone have any similar experiences/recommendations - it's only a few weeks old so can go back if necessary.

Atomic lures
Submitted by lachieH on Wed, 2014-11-19 17:36hi everyone, I have got 2 atomic breamshad 40 lures in the clear colour with a red eye.
http://products.atomiclures.com.au/products/product/HBS40D-CRE
I got these for flathead fishing last summer, and losing an atomic breamshad 40 but it was a ghost tiger one not the clear red eye, and I think I lost it to a flathead, but my nots were useless back then. Anyway I think the action from the lures are awesome and that they can catch fish but I can't seem to get anything on them. I think on my first week of school holidays, I'm just going to head down to the flats infront of aquinas college and bring my backpack, a nice light bream/flathead combo and my atomic hardz and a few softies. I might also get a few vibes and a cranka crab as said in my other post.
but the question that I really want to know is does anybody use them, and think that they are any good in the river?

Boat Wrap, Part 1 - Request for Member Assistance
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2014-11-18 20:42This post is Part 1 of a series I will write to show Members the progression of the installation of a digitally printed graphic boat wrap that is being carefully designed and is scheduled for install on 12 December. It is also a request for help in sourcing the last “hard to get” images.
In essence we are making an 8m long ocean scene to make a digitally printed wrap for the side of my mate’s boat. We are including pelagic and demersal species, and also adding a coral reef, crayfish and bait school. We have sourced some fantastic high resolution images of dolphin fish, tuna, tailor, mackerel and bait fish from a pro underwater photographer in the US. Have a look at these – how good are they?

We have got the reef and crayfish from iStockphoto (commercial image site) but were having trouble getting good images of the local WA demersals. We did contact a WA underwater photographer, following advice from Fisheries, but you wouldn’t want to know the price.
This is our request for help. I have seen so many quality images that Members have posted of their fish but unfortunately you cannot “steal” them at the resolution required to insert them on an 8m “canvas”. What we are after are side on images of pinkies, dhuies and baldies, and a kingfish would be good as well.
The properties of the images that are ideal are:
- the fish looks alive;
- it is a “horse” so that we can add it to the boat in actual size;
- it is side on;
- it has very little in the way of fingers and hands over the fish; and
- it has been taken by a good camera.
For best results, the image is ideally needed in the resolution that it was originally taken (5MB+ would be perfect). There is no intention to “ping” any spot from the photo data and this is certainly not the reason for the request. All background will be eliminated by the graphic designer so it doesn’t really matter what this looks like, or the horizontal angle of the image – the good looking fish at the required resolution is the important thing.
It would really be appreciated of members could review their images and PM me if you think anything is suitable. I could then give you an email address.
Part 2 of the “journey” will be the graphic of the final design prior to installation, and Part 3 will be the finished product.
The boat preparation is underway in earnest. The below photos show the rub-back and first undercoat.

I hope there is interest in the project. My Hornet has an excellent wrap designed and produced by PilbaraBrad and it has inspired us to go “bigger and better”.
Thank you in advance. Mick

Unusual crab sighting
Submitted by CURT on Tue, 2014-11-18 19:45Hi all,
Was hoping someone could help me identify the crab I saw today when I was free diving off the beach in safetybay. I have never seen one like it. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera and have struggled to find anything really resembling online. This one photo which came up as a spider crab is close . It was slightly different as it didn't seem to be covered in spines but it was heavily covered in algae which was could have been hiding them. The ends of all it's legs were a greyish blue colour apposed to red in the pic, these were the only part of it not covered in algae. It was about the size of a large mud crab.

Found a couple cray pots...question
Submitted by Notorious on Tue, 2014-11-18 17:01What are the legaliities of divers claiming discarded cray pots?
Both were well stuck in a reef, small length of rope on top that had its ID floats removed. Both pots have no ID on them themselves and both were well overgrown with algae and bait box lids missing.

Cleaning crabs
Submitted by fisharoo on Tue, 2014-11-18 09:57I've always taken the crabs home and cleaned them because I thought you had too. But speaking to a mate of mine, he cleans them after he has caught them before bring them home. He brings me back to an episode of fwa where they cleaned them on the shore.
so what is the deal? Can I measure them straight from the net and clean one at a time to save me a whole lot of cleaning when I get home?
thanks

What sort of jig weights are you using for shallow water sambos (35-50m)? Obviously fishing in good conditions without a howling breeze.
