Rod to match fin nor reel???
Submitted by maccie on Fri, 2014-03-07 05:07Hi guys. A friend of mine is about to purchase himself a fin nor marquesa 30 or 20 for a trip north in a couple weeks. We're both away at work and leave the day we get back so he's unable to go to a shop and properly pair it with a decent rod. 2 questions. Anyone had any experience with these reels and can recommend a rod. Secondly, what size? 20 or 30. Will be bottom fishing 20 to 60 meters. Spool it with probably 30 maybe 50 pound braid. Any help much appreciated.

Dunsborough Artificial Reefs
Submitted by jayce on Thu, 2014-03-06 22:42Hi Guys
Thinking of taking my boat down to busso on the 15th of march. Just wondering if any one could tell me how the artifiial reefs are fishing lately or would i be better off just Sounding around out the back of rights bank and trying to find something.
I have heard the coral lumps are also good but cant seem to find them on my gps or navionics on my phone. Any one help me with this?
Would like to get into some demersals aswell as jigging for some sambos for some fun.
Cheers Jayce

FFB
Submitted by brucedog1 on Thu, 2014-03-06 21:54Hi guys
taking a mate out tomorrow night for a fish, normally go out to the 40s but seeing its his first time on a boat I dont want to take him too far.
never really fished the FFB and have had varied opinions on success / failures.
Any advise on my plan would be appreciated!
Plan boat in water at 4.30 pm bout 3/4 the way up garden island on the back edge of the bank drop anchor. Apply generous amounts of burley and fish rigs that have 2 snelled circles with squid or strips of mullet and light weights so they drift down through the burley trail.
Again any advise or direction would be awesome!
thanks in advance.

Couple quick questions
Submitted by sheldoncy23 on Thu, 2014-03-06 13:09G'day lads
couple quick questions while I wait for my burger after the front 9 (which was horrid)
1. When fishing places like eshed and busso jetty for mulla especially what sorta spin rod for a heavy spin real is appropriate? Would I look rediculous with my beach combo or should I rather get a heavy boat spin rod? Running 50lb braid mostly
2. I have my Uni break in June/July and thinking if camping down Albany for the salmon. Would they be past there by then or would they still be hanging about. Would it be better down dunsborough way at that time?
cheers fellas

Swan Over Nighter
Submitted by Hutch on Wed, 2014-03-05 20:09Hey guys, it's my mate's birthday soon and we were thinking of doing an over nighter on the Swan in our 4.6m half-cabin. Can anyone suggest any general areas where we could anchor up relatively safely and fish for the night (and nearest boat ramp if possible).
Any info and advice would be appreciated as this will be our first overnighter on the Swan.
Cheers

GoPro frame project with photos
Submitted by wrasse magnet on Wed, 2014-03-05 18:04OK, didn't know how to create a new post with photos in previous thread so starting new one....
My first go at the frame was very basic - just a square frame to completely contain the GoPro housing with heavy hand line mono attached to a single point on top and a heavy sinker attached to bottom via some mono. The theory was that I'd be able to feel the sinker hit the bottom at which point I stop feeding out line to keep the frame off bottom. In practice because the frame was quite heavy and bulky the weight and drag in water combined meant I could not feel the sinker hitting bottom and ended up with the frame bouncing along sand/reef. The other major issue was that a single attachment on top resulted in the frame spinning a lot and being dragged sideways resulting in crooked picture.
I re-started from scratch and ended up with this:

The key I've found is to make the frame buoyant, that's what the capped PVC pipe on top is for. The attachment on bottom is directly below the centre of PVC pipe, a heavy sinker is attached to it to make the whole thing sink. When the sinker hits bottom the frame naturally floats above the bottom and the GoPro is level (ie not tiled up or down). I control the depth of the GoPro off the bottom by varying the length of mono between the sinker and the frame. I attach the sinker with much lighter mono, something like 20lb, if the sinker snags the lighter mono snaps first and the frame complete with GoPro naturally floats to surface due to it's positive buoyancy. The double attachment of heavy mono on top has eliminated the spinning and also ensures the GoPro faces forward during a drift.
That's it, like I mentioned in other thread, very low tech!
My last test in the Swan worked very well, I posted a link to You Tube video in other thread. Now I just need to test it in deeper water. My only concern is the GoPro housing it's self is relatively unprotected so I'm thinking of rebuilding to better protect the GoPro.
I should mention I did not set out to mount the GoPro upside down, originally the frame was the other way round but when I added the capped PVC tube for buoyancy the whole thing ended up upside down. No big deal as the GoPro has the option to invert your footage.
Let me know what you guys think, always looking for improvement ideas.

Dogfight 6500 Tufline 100lb capacity?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Wed, 2014-03-05 16:54Hi all
time to respool the dogfight and was wondering if anyone knows exactly how much XP tufline 100lb will fit on it?
Reason I ask is that I know the 300yrd spool will go close, but didn't want to be caught short and wanted to know if I need to spend the extra for the 600yrd spool.
Have done a bit of net searching and 100lb tufline is .49mm diameter, but cant find the .mm capacity breaskdown for the dogfight anywhere... I know I could go the backing to make up the difference on the 300 if its not enough, but would rather not if possible.
cheers in advance

Catching Cod? of Ocean reef
Submitted by psion on Wed, 2014-03-05 13:50Hey guys
When I don't have the time to hit the beach hard, I generally shoot off to Ocean reef and lash the water. Lately I've caught about 8 "cod?" and have been trying to ID them to no avail. ANy suggections would be great.
Looking at the pictures they look like a cross between a chinaman and esturay cod, probably between 25 and 35 cms. Unfortunately I didn't keep and pics, but it has to be one of the more common fish out there, for me to catch one. So what Cod / fish frequents shallow reefs in Ocean reef.
thanx

My knob fell off in Leeman!
Submitted by Boydy on Tue, 2014-03-04 21:53Hi All headed up to Leeman for the long weekend, as you know the weather was perfect and the fishing didn't let us down either. As Friday was looking the goods we managed to sneak away Thursday arvo so we could get a full extra day in. Got out early and had a try first up with the jigs. With in the first couple of drops had a good hit with the fish taking off at a rate of knots. After a few minutes up came a nice cobia to our supprise. The rest of session included the usual supects some nice Dhu's and baldies.

As we were getting one of Dhus in the boat I couldn't believe it my knob fell off. Managed to finish off the session with no knob! Boated out before lunch with 3 of us on board our boat on 3 on the other boat in our crew.

Day 2 was a repeat on the bottom fish with all getting their fair share. We were just enjoying the magic conditiions when we spotted a big shark coming up from the depths with what looked a like a smaller one with it. As it got closer we realised it was another good sized cobia. My little jig rod, with the back up reel on a Saragosa 4000 was quickly dropped over the side in front of his nose by the skipper (good mate JK) and got smashed.

Second one on board for the trip. All done by lunch again.
Day 3 more quality fish and back in at 30 odd knots.
Matt with a nice Dhu.

James aka El Gringo pretty happy with himself.

So after 3 days fishing, 2 boats, 6 guys we ended up with boat limits on the demersals plus the couple of cobia, heaps of great memories with good crew, and even though I was knobless still got a happy ending......

Bernier and Dorre islands
Submitted by Davenay on Tue, 2014-03-04 16:02Hi everyone,
Heading up to fish the islands when the wind dies down and we were intending to base ourselves in Denham. However it has been put forward by the crew it may be better to base ourselves in Canarvon instead. So I thought I would consult the brains trust on here. Also interested in possible safe overnight mooring areas on Dorre isl if anyone has any.
Thanks in advance.

Charter Booked :-)
Submitted by buschy on Tue, 2014-03-04 12:36Hey guys,
Been a long time in the making but finally booked in with Whitey - going out on 23/04 with the old man (who is celebrating his 60th). Neither of us have experience fishing off shore in WA - but plenty of time on the boat back in the UK (although this is going back 20 years!).
I know Whitey is a top skipper and if the fish are there he will put us on to them. Was just hoping to get a better idea of what to expect from those who have gone out with him before?
Also, is it worth taking anything extra on the day - additional tackle/jigs, food, etc?
Just as exciting, have a couple of days up in Greenhead early in April so looking forward to getting into some tailor and something bigger if the fishing gods are kind. :-)
Cheers all
Buschy

Jurien Bay trip
Submitted by dant on Tue, 2014-03-04 08:17Hi All,
Finally managed to pick a perfect wk end to head up to Jurien bay for our long awaited fishing trip, my mates father in law is a jurien guru and has been fishing the local jurien ground for years - we had been looking forward to this for ages for the old fellah to take us out and show us what he knows.
There had been alot of banter between us leading up to this trip as it was bait vs jigs, the young bucks vs the old salty gurus - couple of beers into the young fellahs quickly followed into giving the old fellahs shit about the 20 -30kg shark hunter outfits they had been using, johnny (we nicknamed him the fish whisperer) the guru just laughed at us and our "whiting rods" and kept pointing to his 45 plus pictures of 20kg dhuies and numerous club records that surrounds the house in jurien.
Day 1 was a cracker of a day weather wise, but there was not much fish to show for it, couple of baldies and that was it, good warm up for the wk end though. this was the start of my so close wk end, dropped a couple of good fish on the jigs - think it was one of those days they were half hearted just having a play.
day 2 - all the fishing comps started, another belter of a day but a fairly big swell (making going through the South passage a hairy experience) - alot of boats at the ramp ready for the days fishing, some great banter over the VHF for the day - i was pissing myself for most part, it got funnier as the day went on as a few of the boys got a couple under the belt, the music/singing started and was coming over the radio - one of the funniest comments for the day MAYDAY MAYDAY............................ WE HAVE RUN OUT OF PISS (this was by mid day). a couple of others that come to mind WHAT IS THE WEIGHT LIMIT ON SEAWEED, and SIZE LIMIT ON SEA HORSES. after a short 30 min trip johnny put us on the spot and off we went - almost bagged out in a single drift, was a great spot, shortly after we had our 8 fish for the day (2 dhuies, 2 pinkes, 2 baldies and 2 BA), we then hit up a sambo spot which was good fun for a bit - johnny and browny picked up a couple of bigger models going over 15kg.

Day 3,
Another great day on the ocean - the VHF alot quieter as the boys must have been on the sauce the night before, again pissing myself though first sign of life was WE REQUIRE 2 BODY BAGS - I AM NOW 2kg LIGHTER haha.
So i was looking forward to my fortunes turning around as i had a pretty lean couple of days, myself personally loosing good fish and only landing small dhuies, nannagies and sambos, the skipper once again landed us on the spot with perfect drifts - we pretty much bagged out again on the single drift, hooked a couple of 15kg model Dhuies which my mate was stoked about was his PB on the soft placcy and the old salty jonny did not dissapoint with his 15.4 kg model also. had to put a few 10kg dhuies back which were wound up super slow, was good to see they all released well. As usual if cleaned up on small dhuies haha.
the old salty strikes first with a nice Dhuie
Browny replys with one for the jigs

after we pulled up our bag limit we went to play with a school of sambos, was more fun watching the old fellahs pulling up double headers on the bait, all i heard was puffing and moaning - they were shattered to say the least, the young fellahs were having a ball pulling up a few smaller models on the jigs.
then suddently WACK all hell broke loose - my mate gets his jig hit half way off, got smoked with his 5 kg stella, almost spooled him, i thought shit i better get mine up so we dont cross, WACK mine goes off - i was reeling as fast as i could and this thing still hit me like a trane - we had both never felt power like that, was unreal how many runs this thing had, was the best fun - after about 10 mins fighting this thing i was shattered, my mates pings about 15 metres below the boat - DEVASTATED, i still had mine on and i had to get it up for a look - 10 metres to go we got colour, looked like a tuna or some sort, the fish rolled around for one last run and PING my 80 pound leader busted FAAAAAA#$%#$#KKKKKKKKK that was it for me - spat the chewy massive almost threw my rod in the water haha, funny thinking back now. Was my favourite jig to (just my luck), hardly got a touch on my other colours after that.
Me trying to take a breather - arms were on fire

browny going hard on stella giving the unstoppable some curry back

All in all a great trip heaps of fish in the freezer so the mrs was still happy, I cant thank Johnny enough a for taking the time out to take us young fellahs away for a solid 3 days fishing, - a trip certainly myself and Browny will remember for a lifetime, we learnt a shit load and its amazing how much experience you gain of a single trip like this, still along way to go for us young fellahs but we are not far off, we cant wait for the rematch already.
Pic of the fellahs after a good day

sorry again if this is a bit longwinded - but hope you enjoyed,
Cheers Dan

looking for someone who can ally weld to do a small job on a roof rack
Submitted by fisho-ron on Tue, 2014-03-04 07:57hi guys
hoping someone on here can help???
im casing someone who can ally weld, you will also need to be able to bend som 25mm ally pipe.
bellow there is a image of my rack
i want to extend the width and lenght of the top rail on my roof rack so i can carry a dingy, proberly 4" all the way around and then attached with flat bar at the top/side of the origanal side supports coming down on a 45 degree angle to the bottom roof rack tube.
i can then screw some of that blue slide stuff to the flatbar.
i can email you some very rough drawingings of what i want, but i think you would get where im going with this
if it was steel i could do it myself, i can not run ally through my welder!!
i can pay cash, take you fishing or both, what ever you want.
i work away on 4/1 roster so you can have 4 weeks to do it, even 2 swings if need be, of course the roof rack will be off the car!!
the rack is a copy of the arb/tracklander full lenght ally rack of a 100 series cruiser

pm me your number and i can call you or i will pm you my number
thanks in advance
