What size for deep drop weights?
Submitted by markj on Tue, 2014-03-18 17:09Need to make up some sinkers for deep dropping and chasing advice from the deep drop gurus on here as to what weight or range of weights I should be making. Will be fishing in the metro region and probably in the 250 - 450 metre range. Was thinking around 2 kg's would be a good starting point?
Looking to make them out of lengths of old steel rockbreaker pins or similar with loops welded to them.
Cheers

Retiring lures to the pool room
Submitted by Goodz on Mon, 2014-03-17 17:57Just wondering what others think about retiring lures that have served you well. I always get to a point after catching a few good fish on a lure where I don't really want to use it incase I loose it. Does that happen to anyone else?

how did everyone go today?
Submitted by randall df223 on Sun, 2014-03-16 19:52I took the young bloke and his mate for a free dive north of little island, hillarys. Hoping for some crays and occy. Three crays all undersized and released. No occys. While I waited a mate and I fished off the boat. 3 herring that managed to get past the blowies and wrasse!! Then we trolled along outside the three mile as far north as ocean reef and as far aouth as scarborough. No luck. Any way, nice day on the water. Better than not being on the water.
How did everyone else go?

Today's venture SOR.
Submitted by Swompa on Sun, 2014-03-16 14:36Took my newly acquired tub out for a ride today. What was going to be a day of pulling my pots and then taking my 10 and 8yo nieces to look at penguins and seals ended up with me and the dog out for a play.
Pot was unfortunately stuck and with the surge, I wasn't going to get too close to the rock it was under so I headed south to try for Tailor south of penguin island. Could see the bastards on the reef, and at one point had 4 or so of them chasing my plug, but that was as close as they got. Kept heading south and came across another patch of white water where I could see Tailor on the reef bu couldn't get them interested.
Kept working south, now half playing to see how far I could get out of a tank of fuel. For to south of long point where I came across a cray boat dropping pots. Trawled amongst the oil slicks but nothing was interested so set myself up wind and threw in a few chunks of shark mak. Plenty of big tugs and with 1 minute to go on my timer the drag went off. My reel has mostly braid on it, but the last 50 or so meters is light mono...well that started to peel off so I had to start chasing whatever I was attached to.
Finally started to see braid coming out of the water and onto my reel and continued to chase. At times I wonder if I had been snagged and held my hand on the spool only to agrivate whatever I had hooked, making it go for another run.
After 30 minutes of this, I deduced to tighten up drag a little which pissed off the other end of the line. I was chasing at around 8 knots to maintain line on my rod then it all went limp.
Pulled up my line and all gone. No chew marks so no idea what I had.
Overall, 30 miles on 15l of fuel. Dog is sleeping and the boat didn't sink. Good times.
That makes my fishing ventures for this year at 8 herring from 6 trips out.....

Submitted by Tim1511 on Sat, 2014-03-15 20:05Hey guys I'm planning on going fishing tommorow at about 5.00-6.00am. Launching of of Hillary's and heading to mindarie and anchoring on the back I the tree mile reef Ina about 10- 15 m if water and burley up for snapper and anything else around. For about an hour and if that dosent work I wa planning in heading out to the gemine reef and dropping some baits and lures to try and xatch some demersals.Than maybe do a bit if trolling around that area. if that didn't work I was planning on cruising around that area in about 30 m - 40m of water with baits and maybe try and get some demersals. I have never done this before as I mostly fish of Hillary's. Is there demersals of mindarie, how deep out ? Any tips Info or where abouts I should be fishing would be great .

I NEED HELP WITH SEA SICKNESS! I HAVE TRIED TABLETS THEY DIDN'T WORK....
Submitted by Steve911 on Sat, 2014-03-15 15:43 Hey everyone,
I have recently gotten into my fishing seriously again after a few months not wetting a line.
i fish entirely land based because i get horribly sea sick when out on the water. (last boat session i did was 12 hours of throwing my large intestine up)
i was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about sea sickness tablets, medication or even remedies that work for you.
i really want to get more into the deep sea side of things and make catching a large pelagic more of a habbit than a 1 in 1000000 chance from land.
any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

LiDAR Data and Images
Submitted by Mick C on Sat, 2014-03-15 11:39I "uploaded" a LiDAR generated image on the ocean floor adjacent to Two Rocks Marina yesterday. A number of members asked about the origins of the data and whether it was available generally. I responded to a question and have included that response below. I will try and seek relevant data and make that available to Members in due course.
Being new to WA I have only just discovered that the DoT holds LiDAR generated bathymetry for coastal waters (the image was in a proposal request from DoT to my company to undertake a geophysical survey of the coastal reserve immediately north of the Two Rocks Marina). Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) mapping is an accepted method of generating precise and directly georeferenced spatial information about the shape and surface characteristics of the Earth. For anyone interested a LiDAR 101 explanation can be found at: http://www.csc.noaa.gov/digitalcoast/_/pdf/lidar101.pdf.
LiDAR data is expensive to obtain because it must be captured from the air by specialised equipment. A number of government agencies and private companies undertake LiDAR surveys for specific purposes and will commission the collection of LiDAR data. The data may then be purchased by others and is generally about $100 per square kilometre (assuming that it is available for your area of interest). Once purchased, it may be imported into a range of different mapping applications and manipulated and presented for specific purposes. Working with LiDAR data requires specialist knowledge and computer software.
Without having a specific knowledge of the DoT LiDAR data set, I would say that it would have been captured to provide a better understanding of the offshore features of the coastline. This would be important to DoT as it regulates shipping and the like and knowledge of the sea floor would be important for a number of purposes (for example, currents in particular places are highly dependent on the shape of the sea floor). The bathymetry would have been generated by using the different colour spectrum in the captured data and calibrating this with known water depth to produce a graded image that reflects sea floor features. As always, there is an error bound that is associated with the data and this is not stated on the image (general land based LiDAR errors are about 150mm) but I would expect it to exceed land based LiDAR errors. Nevertheless, the image is a very accurate representation of the ocean floor over the area presented.
So, you can not just "log on" to a site and get easy access to LiDAR data in the format you desire. I know what most people would like for fishing purposes is a LiDAR generated image of the Perth Metro coast on a spacially referenced base that can be interpreted through a simple computer application such as Microsoft Paint (if you move the cursor over the image, coordinates are presented that reflect actual eastings and northings). I have a few contacts in DoT and will make some enquiries about the availability of its data and the format it is in. I may then be able to make a map that has the desired properties and make that available to Fishwrecked members. It is probably a "hard ask" but I will give it a crack. Barring that, I should be able to get an image of the Perth coast such as the one presented and make that available where location positions can be generally determined from the scales on the x and y axis of the image.
The technology available now days is quite remarkable really.

? for the fly fishos
Submitted by crezz on Sat, 2014-03-15 00:55I have just ordered all the components to build a 6'6" #2wt fly rod for all the tight sections of the rivers down south. My question is, how far can you cast such a short, light rod? realistically I would not need to cast more than 7m. I have 2wt WF floating line for it already.
Any info is appreciated.

Shimano Warranty
Submitted by Boydy on Fri, 2014-03-14 21:10Recently I had my first issue with one of the Shimano reels I have.
I guess unfortunately from time to time some things do go wrong, when they shouldn't.
At this point OEM's can be judged on how they are corrected, or not.
Last Friday I went back to where I purchased the reel from 2 years ago and showed them what had happened, I did not ask for warranty just explained what went wrong.
The guys I dealt with said it shouldn't have failed and would submit a warranty claim on Shimano.
Today I received a phone call from the shop I returned my reel to saying the failed part was replaced and ready for collection warranty covered.
The new handle was wrapped in a Shimano Australia bag and handed back to me 7 days after I had inquired about a repair, 5 working day's so to speak.
So I have to say well done to Shimano for dealing with issue and rectifying in a more that timely manner but also a credit to the retailer for submitting it to them quickly to enabled a prompt repair.
Well done.
