The First (and hopefully not the last) Post
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2014-01-26 06:08Hello knowledgeable Fishwrecked Members,
For some time now I have watched this site with interest and am constantly amazed by the quality of the content posted by members. The information provided, and the search engine, has helped me no end with the unfamiliar waters of Perth Metro and I wanted to introduce myself to Fishwrecked, detail my novice experiences and seek any further advice that members may be able to provide.
For 8 months last year I had the "wonderful" experience of commuting to Perth from Brisbane on a weekly basis (there is nothing like 15 hours of travel each week). The ASX-200 company that I work for requested that I come to "fix" a business, and in the end it is not a short term proposition and the option of relocating to Perth with my family was put. It is a long story that I won't go into however my wife is from Perth and her very extended family is here so needles to say we moved in December 2013.
I have fished all my life, although not as often as I would have liked at times. Throughout my childrens upbringing we would on regular occasions head north from Brisbane to Cooloola Beach, north of Noosa, where you could camp in the dunes and fish the magnificent waters of the 40 mile beach. Through a project I did on the Noosa North Shore, I became good friends with "The Bear", who is a local tailor fishing legend in his own lifetime, and through the many hours of enjoyable times (and lots of Bundys) with him I learned a lot about reading water, rigs, baits and strategy and would constantly annoy my friends with images od sucessful trips. I have used the image of my daughter with a couple of nice tailor from the Noosa River mouth, taken from The Bear's front yard, as my "ID Image" to remind me of the good times we had. Similarly, I attach an image of one trip with the boys.

take care out wide
Submitted by seadog-1967 on Fri, 2014-01-24 23:56gday had an interesting day a few weeks ago firstly given all the ocean to find a group of five boats drifting over the same area on the edge of the shelf my friend and I in a 19ft tinny were quiet concerned when a larger vessel,i,ll go as far as saying it,s first name was excallabar or something pretty close to that name came very close to having a midship collision, even though there were 5 people on this boat all concentrating on 1 person who had hooked up I would like to add a very small piece of advice, there was only 2 on my boat and as designated skipper my firstresponsibility was to make sure of our drifting line up and where our other fishing companions were,i have done the rotto channel swim twice but don't think I could do quadripple it in one afternoon, and was also wondering what is the gentleman,s rule on diving at the fad,s as far as approaching with care to get the skippers attention or do you just throw your lures out and hope for the best, interesed to hear your feed back, cheers and keep it safe out wide....

bimini twist to cats paw am i doing it wrong?
Submitted by Gaffatron on Fri, 2014-01-24 14:44hey all,
learnt how to do a bimini twist last night and then tie a cats paw to a wind on leader when I complete the cats paw I cant pull it tight so the braid bunches together at the end of the wind on loop. the braid grips on the rope/cord section of the wind on so it leaves an open loop, I can pull like hell and it doesn't slip but is there an easy way to get around it? or is that how it is meant to be done?? cheers

Engel question
Submitted by SandGroper84 on Thu, 2014-01-23 20:27G'day members,
I have a question about Engels, I'm heading down to Albany for the long weekend with the lady and unfortunately the cruiser is out of commission due to a gearbox issue so I'm taking the ute down, my problem is I have a hard tornue cover on the back and my engel does not fit standing up, I've done a crazy amount of "googling" to try find out if it's will destroy or effect the engel if I lay it on it's side, the engel will NOT be running when on it's side, any info or opinions on this topic would be much appreciated.
regards
Matt

Warroora / Warra - Sandy Point - Beach launch
Submitted by AHarman on Thu, 2014-01-23 10:36Hey guys,
Anyone launched a 6m boat at Sandy Point before? Have a 6m Haines (2 ton) and toying with the idea of beach launching at Warra, rather than motoring down from Coral Bay. Heard some larger tinnies to 7m been launched at Sandy Point....Have only ever launched tinnies at Maggies and the Lagoon.
Any tips or info would be great. Dont have a third beach wheel, but thinking of taking some plastic lattice to reverse down on if needed.
Cheers,
Adam.

Montebello Islands September - A couple of spots left!
Submitted by da_houghsta on Wed, 2014-01-22 16:15Hi all,
Has anyone here been itching to get up north to the Montebello Islands? I'm at Compleat Angler Nedlands and we have organised a couple of charters to the Montebello Islands of which I still have a couple of spots available in September. The first trip has been fully booked, but there is still a couple of spots in September 4-12 this year - 7 days with Blue Lightning Charters out of Karratha. I will be there to help out anyone who comes on with us, with gear and techniques for the 8 customers. We will be staying on their 55' Conquest and also have access to their 26' Boston Whaler and even can hire their 40' Blackwatch for game fishing. There should be great fishing available in September including GT's, Coral Trout, Billfish and anything else you would normally expect.
I can't wait for this trip and hope to find some people to fill the spaces! Please contact me for the pricing as it is a bit cheaper than normal, either through PM or just call me at the shop on 9389 1337. Hope to hear back from a few of you, if there is any information you want to find out, let me know.

Bit of fun with barra
Submitted by pale ale on Wed, 2014-01-22 15:19One day I went fishing. It was a beautiful hot day with a bright yellow sun. The tide was low and the mangroves were sitting high and dry.
I was struggling with the insect life attacking me and drinking my beer.
Anyway, after a while sweating in the sun, I landed a nice 107cm barra.

barotrauma studies
Submitted by randall df223 on Wed, 2014-01-22 14:13I have seen on Fisheries NT facebook page an article on a barotrauma study on golden snapper. Interesting read and I have tried to cut and paste the link and text herr but my phone isnt allowing me to. If someone else can great - do it please.
Its finding are that survival rates for reef fish from deeper than 10 metres are significantly reduced when released (using a weight, not vented).
There is an interesting comment attached putting forward an argument for purely bag limits for these fish, not size limits. Basically saying that as soon as you catch your bag limit you stop fishing. Ie keep what you catch no matter how small. Argument is that less of the bigger breeders would be dragged up, released and die anyway.
Have a read and post your thoughts.
Would be interested if WA Fisheries are doing similiar studies?
