Three Kings aboard Enchanter 2014
Submitted by Phu Le on Sun, 2013-06-09 12:35Hello,
I'm organising a trip to the Three Kings (New Zealand) on 6-11 April, 2014. This is a 6 day live aboard fishing trip on Enchanter. I've already got 7 people booked and looking for 1 more to join us. We will be mainly jigging and topwater fishing for Kingfish and New Zealand Bass.
Cost will be $AU1900 (6 day fishing trip)+ flights+ food (we will be self catering)+ accomodation (1 night before and after trip) + your own tackle.
Coxy from Jigging Master Australia visited The Three Kings earlier this year and what a dream trip it was!
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jigging-Master-Australia/116190705091193?fref=ts
30+kg Kingfish on jigs and topwater lures as well as 50+kg bass..... what more could you ask for.
More information about Enchanter Charters can be found here http://www.fishntrips.co.nz/kings.html and http://www.facebook.com/pages/Enchanter-Fishing-Charters/122823904403245?fref=ts
Last month Enchanter boated their largest jig caught Kingfish to date, weighing in at 51kg which was released.
I will need a $500 deposit to secure your spot.
Pm if you are interested in this trip or if you want more details.
Thanks for reading

Hey photography pros- what camera for a novice?
Submitted by Versus on Sat, 2013-06-08 13:26Heading to the Phillipines in about a month, and looking to buy a good camera duty free. Have only ever owned little digi- cams, which are ok but obviously looking to take it up a notch. So thinking around the $600 range (not including memory card etc), something that's amatuer friendly but will still serve us if we get a bit more advanced. Also would like to be able to get an underwater housing for it in the future, i'm not sure what the go is there, if you can get one for pretty much any camera or not.
Also is there a 'photography for dummies' book or something similar that anyone can reccomend?
Advice appreciated, cheers.

Submitted by propel74 on Sat, 2013-06-08 01:49Hi,
Looking at heading up to Quobba station in about 3 weeks and just looking for some info on gear to take and any other relevant info..
Im taking 5kg and 10kg spin sets, 15kg and 10kg overhead sets. Plan to throw some soft plastics and metal lures out and hopefully get some live baits in the water.
What size leaders are being used up there and how easy is it to get fish up the cliffs?
Cheers in advance for any info!!

Friendly fishermen in Coral Bay
Submitted by crano on Fri, 2013-06-07 19:16I was 10 miles out from Coral Bay and had just finished a drift and was heading back into the wind for another drift and a black Genesis called Ace-when nature calls
turned up and sounded over where we had just drifted and then came back to us and put the sea anchor in and started drifting in front of us.
I am sure they were not being rude and ignorant but were just being friendly and wanted to fish with us.
By the way I got some nice photos of you.

Cockburn Sound?
Submitted by Aaron Santos on Fri, 2013-06-07 18:54Hi all,
planning to head out in the sound on sunday chasing what ever is biting.
Has anyone had any luck with crabs in there lately or tried. Was just wondering if it would be worth throwing a few nets out while chasing squid.
Also how are squid catches? easy or hard work moving round chasing them.
Cheers

Raymarine support and the dragon fly.
Submitted by paula8519 on Fri, 2013-06-07 16:56Following all the hype i went out and purchased the dragonfly unit to put it thru its paces.
The transducer cable length was not long enough so i ordered and recieved the extension cord. The set up is a little different in that transducer has its own seperate power supply cable which is the same as in the origina transducerl cable. Logic should mean that you just tape up the original power leads and use the extension power leads. Having purchased marine electronics over the past 45 years experince has taught me not to assume anything and to get the info from the manufacturer .
Naturally the extension came with no instructions neither did the limited supplied manual nor the more extensive manual on the ray marine on line site, have any relevent info. Armed with this i called the Australian tech support center, well the service agent did not even know that an extension cable was available let alone how to wire it, not to worry his manager would contact me, i left my number and and email, with no contact after 2 days i rang and was told that they did not know but they had contacted the manufacturer and they would respond, a week later with no response i rang back to be told the agent handling the request was on the phone and he would ring later which of course he did not do, neither did he send an email.
Faced with this high level of service i contacted the U.S. service center only to be told that i should contact my local distributer as they did not handle overseas requests. This is the same level of incompetance that i have experienced with the Garmin brand in Australia. Two weeks later i am no further in .this great quest to answer the simpliest of questions .For the record this unit is built to a price, the golden statement of you only get what you pay for is very relevent here, a cheaper chinsier flimsy model, would be hard to find. The mounting system is a case in point, it is basically non functional, designed to fall out and hopefully break your head unit as soon as possible. EVERY THING ABOUT THE DESIGN And construction is AS CHEAP AS IT GETS .
I have yet to test it on the water, if i can ever find some one to verify how to properly set it up. The lesson here is pay peanuts and expect a monkey service. The sad thing is that when it was owned by the Brits this was a quality company with an excellent service record, how times change. I will eventually sort it out and give the heads up on what its like compared to the Lowrance down scan and Humminbird down vision.

Dirk Hartog Adventure May 2013 - Photos
Submitted by Goodz on Fri, 2013-06-07 16:41Dirk Hartog Adventure May 2013.
Seems like I was waiting forever for this trip to come and now it's over so quickly! I won't really write too much but will share a bunch of photos of our trip and the island. A quick back story though..
Got an invite late last year from my best mate Adrian to join him and 2 others on a Dirk Hartog trip for about a week or so but knew I'd never be able to get a leave pass for that long with the 3 kids under 5 at home so after saying I couldn't I didn't give it much more thought... until feb or so when my missus tells me she had a secret that she wanted to tell me about. Apparently she had secretly called Adrian and told him I could go and they had been organising the booking of a week trip to Dirk Hartog (10 days away!). What a good wife!!! :) Little did I know she would hold this trip over me for the 3 months till I went.. haha.. but it was worth it.
Anyway, here's a few pics...

The drive up went quick with all the talk about the week of fishing ahead

Ready to get off the bitumen and head toward Steep Point and Dirk Hartog

Glassy crystal clear water greeted us

Managed to get onto the island the arvo before we were planning to as others were coming off

Both cars on the island just after the sunset and a fun 5hr drive (lots of stops) to The Block

Day 1 we went for an explore to the top end of the island. View from the Lighthouse looking back towards Turtle bay

First fish landed for the trip after being busted off by a suspected Shark Mack 2nd cast. Caught a fair few of these that day and over the week. They went great in the curry's that the boys had brought up with them for dinner

Next day first fish landed to Jim on a crab bait

And another Gold Spot Trevally

Adrian cracks the Parrot fish code

My first of many Baldies for the trip

End of the day was filleting time

Another Parrot fish (different colour one though?)

Sunset over the front reef at The Block

We ate well for the week, fish every night cooked many ways

Not sure what this spot is called but it looked cool. Unfortunately the swell was up this day so the surrounds weren't really fishable.

The Cave or as we called it, The Lair (the blow hole there sounds like a dragon breathing)

Love the way the rocks are formed from shells and sand

Few photos from the front reef late one arvo

And a few photos of the stars. Haven't perfected the night sky shots yet but still think they're ok

Adrian scored fish of the trip with this Baldie caught on a popper! Can't say I've heard of one being landed on surface lure before.

Only Tailor landed for the trip but a couple hooked and one serious horse of a green back spotted several times at one spot.

My Baldie on stickbait was also a highlight for me.

View from the toilet sand dune behind the Hartog Hilton

The Hartog Hilton at The Block

Cliff fishing infront of The Block

Plenty of good reef breaks around the island that cranked on the right tide

I went for a snorkel ontop of the reef infront of camp a couple of times and saw plenty of fish life

Walking and casting the beaches up to Cape Levillian we caught plenty of small GTs along the way
7 Days on the island really wasn't long enough. We only just started to figure things out and before we knew it we were on our way home...

Being abducted by aliens while we pumped our tyres back up back on the hard track

The road to the end of the universe
In conclusion.... What an awesome place! It was so good to be somewhere that you didn't see another person for a whole week. There's certainly some amazing fishing spots around the island and if the swell was down theres even more!
Highlights..
Sight casting crabs to Baldies and Parrot fish
Baldies on surface lures
Massive GT coming shoulders out of the water to smash a lure but not connecting
Free jumping billie horsing across the horizon
The Stars.....
The End.

Local Perth Advice Needed?
Submitted by EmLou86 on Fri, 2013-06-07 09:32I moved over here from England a year ago and when my parents came to visit I thought it would be nice to go fishing with my Dad seeing as the only bit of fishing we have ever done in the UK is normally in the wet!
A friend of a friend recommended Mills Charters so we gave them a go and weren't disappointed! The crew were really friendly and chatty, asking lots of questions about the fishing in England and took an interest which was nice. The food we were given was great value for money and the day in general was fab, definitely helped that we were fishing in the sun for a nice change!! Didn't take the skipper long to find a good spot and even though my fish was undersized and had to be released back, my Dad caught a decent sized snapper and we were able to take that home!
Overall a great day out so would definitely go back and recommend them!
But still being new to the area i've not managed to get out fishing much and would be interested to try different places - i'm in Perth WA. I would also like to do some fishing off beaches if possible? I'm not too experienced so if anyone could recommend any spots/places to me that would be great.
Thanks!

Looking for a Dive Partner
Submitted by TGMitchell on Thu, 2013-06-06 21:50I'm keen on getting into some more diving - have my advanced PADI but only about 50 dives under my belt. I'd like to learn spearfishing as well.
I have my own boat (5.5m fibreglass) and am currently fishing out from the Safety Bay Jetty. I'm off to Thailand next month and will be purchasing more dive gear there - so will have my own set up soon.
Problem is I don't know any divers here, so I never really get to do it as much as I'd like - so I'm putting it out there - if there is anyone out there interested my partnering up with me or taking me out on their boat it'd be good to hear from you

quobba spangly
Submitted by jay91 on Thu, 2013-06-06 19:41Just got back from quobba for the long weekend. Mackies were pretty scarce but still managed a few hook ups while spinning. Got absolutely smoked by the first and sharked or groupered on the next (dont know which one got it first haha) But the trip wasn't a complete waste, cleaned up on the bottom with a few decent pinkies and baldies plus this stonkin spangled emperor! Went 71cm at an estimated 5-6kg

Beach/Jetty/Rock fishing advice.
Submitted by BoozeFishSnooze on Thu, 2013-06-06 19:19Hey guys, just recently I was thinking about getting a rod and reel that would be alright for throwing out baits and maybe lures from jettys beaches and maybe the moles/asi groyne. But I'm not sure if I should go for a 10ft+ rod or something a bit smaller, I'd like to be able to try and nab a ray or shovenose as well as trying for mulloway and tailor on occasion. Here's the catch though I'm on a bit of a budget at the moment so at the most I could spend 200-250 on both rod and reel.
Cheers

Furuno Chirp sounder
Submitted by paula8519 on Thu, 2013-06-06 19:01Just a breif note to let readers know i was lucky enough to get hold of a pre release Furuno dff1 uhd chirp sounder module, recieved it today and will install and ocean test it on the weekend. Having used the simrad bsm2 and the garmin gsd 26 offerings i am looking forward to putting the furuno thru its paces. The unit will only run a 1KW AIRMAR 200kh or 50 kh transducer so it will be fitted to a a tm265 200 hz airmar chirp transducer. Interesting that furuno has relesed the model in Australia prior to its U.S release. A bit of a turn arround going on past releases . The unit retails at $2450 but shopping arround will lower this price. The module is to be linked to a furuno TZ14 MULTI FUNCTION DISPLAY That furuno have provided with the latest updates to run the chirp module. Will keep you posted.
