Small gangs for whitebait
Submitted by bulkie on Tue, 2013-06-04 11:56Thinking of giving this a go now. Hook and size recommendations please for a set of 3 gangs on the standard tackleshop white bait. I've seen some use the mustad limerick, just not too sure about sizes.

Any GIS users?
Submitted by WAter-baby on Tue, 2013-06-04 10:59 Greetings fishwrecked community,
I have been sitting in the background for a while enjoying all your fishy posts! so firstly i want to say thanks for all the eye candy
. Ofcourse now that i want something, i have decided to create an account!
I was curious to know if any of you rec-fishos out there are using GIS software as part of your tool-kit? i would like to know if anyone can point me in the direction of datasets related to our WA coast? i am sure they would exist out there somewhere... otherwise i know that there are digitzed marine charts getting around, has anyone tried to georeference them?
I am a keen fisho and i love WA with all my heart, i am still a GIS rookie but i see it as a powerful tool that has the potential to ad some serious value to the rec-fisho arsenal and the wider concept of rec-fishos as a tool for citizen science!
I look forward to getting to know some of you guys and would greatly appreciate any wisdom/shapefiles you might have

LED Strip Lighting
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Tue, 2013-06-04 09:02Guys just bought some 500mm LED strip lights and have started re-doing the wiring on my boat, not that there was anything wrong with it before except the fuel guage wasn't working which i found a loose wire. But now its all out, i'm adding the anchor light, cabin light, two extra speakers for the stezza, a new VHF radio and the strip lighting. Seems the boat has a loom fitted to include the extra lights to the switchboard but they arent connected.
Curious as to where others have placed their Strip Lights, under the side pockets or in them seems to be popular? Doesn anyone have any pics of them going or suggestions on where to put them?

Jurien Bay Report
Submitted by dant on Tue, 2013-06-04 07:51Gday All,
Hope you all had a good long wk end with plenty of fish, had a great wk end myself up in Jurien bay took the family and tub - bit of a read for a tuesday morning.
Me and a mate have been waiting to get up to Jurien bay for the last 5 years with a boat, its been a dream of both of ours, we would sit there on the beach morning and night trying to catch tailor and odd mullaway, well the time finally came when we could take a boat up to his holiday house in jurien bay, the anticipation starting about 3 weeks prior, i think we spent about 10 hours in the shed on Sat doing up rigs talking shit (all fishing), having a few beers and walking around not really knowing what else to do but stare at the fishing rods.
we both copped spray from the wifes " we will laugh our heads off if you dont catch anything" the reply was "dont bother getting anything lined up tomorrow night love, we are having fish" (whilst touching wood and crossing my fingers).
weather looked ok with 15 -20 knot easterlys with a 1.1 mtr swell so off we went at 6am, fk were we excited to get out there - the cruise wasnt to bad out the north passage with a bit of tricky nth west follwing sea, but got out in no time to spot on the 2nd bank about 30km out - as we put the anchor out the weather turned pair shape, the drift was so hard the anchor went straight under the boat and ripped of the transducer (great fkn start i though, mrs is going to kill me again), the seas wipped up with the wind and became quite dangerous with wall after wall of heavy seas and a couple of breakers over the boat we decided with out the transducer enough was enough and decided to go pot hunting.
We were sitting on about 8 knots due to swell and seas - it was definately the worst i have been in, was like a washing machine, not sure if anyone else was out in Jurien that morning but it was not a good ride, dont think i have concentrated so hard in my life - we were drenched.
As we got closer in the seas were dying and it became alot more pleasent, finally we can get some fishing in (we were not going home to the wifes without a fish) - drifted past a pot and decided to do a bit of drift with the jigs now we could atleast hold bottom, was hanging for leak and beer after shitting myself for the last 2 hours, so cracked a beer and lent over the side for a slash, BANG the mate gets a hook up first drift, beer and pss put on the backburner, in a flash captain dan with the gaff arrived, was a good fight for about 5 - 10 minutes slowing getting the big fellah in, up came the silver - you fkn beauty a nice pinky, i made sure i was not going to lose it gaffed the bastard so hard i landed ass up on the deck witht the fish flapping in my face - did not give a shit we were stoked, couple of high fives and a beer followed, very happy to land it on the jigs, something we had read alot about.

i got a nice blackass (50cm) which equalled a great feed that night, heads held high we had to head back (to my mates dissapointment) to grab the kids for a quick put around the bay.
so we get the kids out and anchor up around the little island next to the south passage on the south passage (in 2m water) burleyed up (we threw fkn everything out the boat that smelled) about 10 min passed the kids were over it and off they went in the cabin to do some colouring in - beauty another beer and bit of play on the small gear.
with the oil slick coving about 3/4 of the island we were bringing in everything, rays, birds, NW blowies - then a couple of big shadows crept past us FK ME its a sambo i yell out - sorry kids, bad word naughty daddy. me and my mate both fell over trying to scramble for the big rods that we had put away - gang hooks and mulies went straight out, BANG my mate was on - was all aboard the rocket express, stripped about 100 mtrs of his line and snapped under the boat, we hooked up another 4 times but they just kept snapping us off around, under the boat - they were atlest 10-15kg , was good fun though to actually see them smash the bait and just take off in 2 mtres of water.
sorry again if a bit long winded - but a fair bit happened in one day at jurien, what a great place to fish - cant wait to get up there again on a good day.

Prawn fishing in Exmouth
Submitted by Griffo84 on Tue, 2013-06-04 07:05G'day fellow fishers,
Myself and a few mates are heading to Exmouth this Thursday for a weeks fishing and are keen to chase a few king prawns. Does anyone know anything about prawn fishing in exmouth? With all the rain in the area lately perhaps it has got them on the run?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
PS- Detailed coords of your best fishing spots will also be useful on this trip!! Haha!!
Cheers
Griffo.

Submitted by Young Tuppa on Mon, 2013-06-03 17:50Hi ... I'm thinking about purchasing a 4m Quintrex Hornet dinghy with an Eclipse Hull and 30hp motor. I expect to mainly use the boat for trolling close to the shore off south west coast of WA. Any comments regarding your experiences with this type of boat and hull would be welcome. Thanks :)

Can of Old Worms
Submitted by TheJettyRat on Mon, 2013-06-03 10:24I normally don't open cans of old worms once they have been resealed but this is for my reputation.... a 90+cm tailor was landed on the end of the Busso Jetty lastweek. I have confirmed this with several eye witnesses and a fishing buddy who was there. I don't BS when it comes to my fishing.

Fishing goodwill
Submitted by deanot on Mon, 2013-06-03 09:33I start this by saying I'm a completely new fisherman, I picked up a rod for the first time since I was a kid in Feb of this year, so I've got a lot to learn.
Learning isn't always easy, there is so much variety in gear, tackle and methods, distilling all this info into something I can put into action and get results in the water with is easier said than done. So this is why when experienced fishos have the goodwill to take the time to give a newbie some advice and help, I'm always grateful.
One such example of this goodwill came my way on Sunday morning, I'd been out on Saturday morning flicking lures for Tailor which resulted in two hookups, followed by two leaps, two head shakes and two lost fish. I was still determined, so out again I went on Sunday at first light.
After a few hours of fruitless fishing along came another fisho, Mark, who flicked his lure not 10m away from me and landed the tailor I'd been trying for all morning. Mark must of seen the diminished hope in my eyes after watching him land that fish right where I'd been trying for hours, so he did something I'm grateful for, he stopped off his own back, and took a few minutes out to share some info from his experience.
He showed me a couple of his lures, explained why he used them, talked through the tailor habits and the territory he covers to fish them. He also advised me to swap out the trebbel hooks for singles, and then most importantly advised me to keep fishing a bit longer. It was 9:30 and I was about to pack it in, but Mark had just told me he'd caught some of his biggest fish around 10am. So I persisted, 10am rolled around and just as the fishing soothsayer predicted the tailor came past, I hooked up my first, the hook stuck with my new single hook and I landed the fish at 39cm, straight out again and my next fish hits, I get this tailor ashore and it goes 50cm.
So with a little help from a new friend and a bit of luck, I landed my PB tailor just as I was about to give up. So Mark, if you by chance are reading, I owe you a drink - and thanks for the fish.
Deano

Coral Bay:The Town Without Pity. lmao
Submitted by Cardinal on Mon, 2013-06-03 08:20There was a skit on sunday night channel 7 about a 'bite club' ( people who have been attacked by sharks). There was a victim from Coral Bay (David Pickering) who says he got bitten by a tiger shark. It wasnt. It was a reef shark only around the 1.5m mark. He told everyone that is was a tiger to sell his story. He then got run outta town when the media showed up. You think we were gonna help them with a dodgy story. Dont bloody think so...

Am I Wrong!
Submitted by Bluetonic on Sun, 2013-06-02 23:34I've been on this site for at least 5 years now and although this is by far the best fishing website for WA I still feel the time has come to say something!
I am sick and tired of seeing members post or comment something negative towards a good capture!
I am sick and tired of seeing people say a picture has 'go gadget arms' (Who fucken cares! If the photo is good! what should that matter!!!!!!!!!')
I am sick and tired of people who crititicise shit on this site yet when I look at their profile they have never had anything to do with what they are criticising! yet alone posted a great capture!
I am one of many members who fishes every weekend but now chooses not to put anymore pics up because, Hey! (Some fuckwit is having a go because my arms are too long in a picture or shit! there's one too many fish in the picture! yet you don't know the whole story!!!!)
It's about time some of you BUCKED your idealogy up! YES! PUT UP! or FUCK OFF!!!
This site does not need dickheads who jump to conclusions!
How about if someone posts something you're not sure about, then maybe PM them 1st before rubbishing them, and get the whole story!
Please read this and think about it!

Sea Defence, North of Mandurah estuary
Submitted by biggaf on Sun, 2013-06-02 08:08Hi guys,
Fairly new to the area and was just wondering what the sea defence is like for fishing off? Haven't fished that far down before, was gonna give it a go through the day with the kids. Usually fish Secret Harbour or Madora Bay at dusk/dawn, fancy a change. Any tips for bait and rigs? Only ever use mulies for the tailor and sqiud for the tiny stuff for the kids.

Weather tomorrow...where to go?
Submitted by tigerfish on Sat, 2013-06-01 18:46Just looking for some advice on location for a fish tomorrow on my boat (5.3m ally runabout). I'm still pretty green when it comes to boating on the 'big briney' and not too sure what the best option will be with the predicted weather.
Seabreeze showing around 1m swell with 15-20knt easterly. Was thinking of going down to Cockburn Sound where it wouldn't really matter, but it is a long drive for me (north of Wanneroo) and if it is likely to be okay out of say Ocean Reef then I'd rather do that?
Any thoughts on what it will be like? I assume the swell won't be too much of a problem but just wondering what sort of chop that wind would make for out at 3 mile? Any advice on what I might target (and how
) would also be greatly appreciated.
