New setup - what to get?
Submitted by ca11um on Fri, 2012-12-21 22:22Hey guys, been tossing up getting a new combo lately, something around the 6kg mark or heavier. I want to use it for flinging lighter lures from like 7 grams to 25grams. Will be used for chasing jacks to tuna, Spangled emperor to dhufish and maybe some light jigging for demersals. I was having a look at the Gloomis GL2 ESP spin 8-15lb, 6'8". It has a nice light tip but the guides seem really weird on how they have placed them out. It also might just possibly be to light for what i want it to do. I wouldnt use it for jigging though.
The other rod is a Shimano Terez 15-30lb 7'2" spin rod. This is ideal for jigging and stopping the bigger class of fish. but i am not sure how it would go casting lures like 1/4 jigheads.
Any body who has tried any of these rods, your feedback is very much appreciated!!
Also if anyone has any other suggestions that would be great!! Would prefer the rod to be around 6'8"-7' and an ideal weight would be around 15-20lb. splitt grip preferred as well.
The reel is pretty much sorted, will probably be a 3000 Sol or 4000 Stradic FJ (or if anyone is selling something like this, let us know!!)
Thanks guys!!

Reel Maintenance
Submitted by Braxi on Fri, 2012-12-21 20:05G'day,
I was just got my new Stella 4000SW from Oceanside. Absolutely love it. I had it out the last few days and christened it with 7 barra, the smallest being 71cm, the biggest 85cm. The little reel handled it with ease. But now Im home and I'd like to keep this little gem in as good condition as I can. Does anyone have any care tips that I can use on my Stella to keep it reeling in barra for years to come? Thanks.

South coast Noah's
Submitted by Chris fish on Fri, 2012-12-21 18:20After recently moving to Albany I've been doing a heap of fishing and free diving but still made time to chase a few sharks.
Ive been trying to get a few small sharks to keep for tea but just can't get past the plague numbers of 2-2.5m ones!! I've been kayaking and balooning baits with good success, we have hooked 20+ sharks and landed a fair few in the last month and hooked a few monsters that are just to big to get in haha.

Fremantle Boat harbour Penguin and Big Skippy
Submitted by Fisher Kid on Fri, 2012-12-21 08:42Hi guys, was down at the fremantle fishing boat harbour on 20/12/12)yesterday), with some mates trying to see how many blowies we could get. And there was a penguin!!!! Just a little fairy penguin swimming around catching small bait fish he cornerd up against the wall. he had oil on his back from the boats, and the water had a layer of oil on top, we tried to catch him in the net but he was too fast.
But anyways back to fishing. We berleyed the blowies up with cooked potatoes, and these 3-4 huge skippy came through, probably 1-2kg. Just thought someone might be interested.
Although bait is not an option, as there are way too many blowies, slices or softys are they only way to go.

Tow Vehicle Fuel Consumption
Submitted by Cruise Control on Thu, 2012-12-20 09:24Given that this is about a motor vehicle and not Fishing or Boats this is possibly the wrong Forum for this topic but then everyone that has a boat tows it with something.
I am trying to get to the bottom of what kind of fuel consumption I should expect to get from a petrol 4.7L V8 Landcruiser whilst towing a 3T boat. I currently try to tow at an average of 90KPH so usually I am sitting on 85 - 95KPH. At this speed towing say to Exmouth and back I am averaging 25 litres/100 - It seems to me that this is excessive and I am looking for feedback as to what would be deemed acceptable. Understand that there are lots of factors, wind, traffic etc but I am talking generally not one specific instance where I may have been affected by a headwind for example.
If this is considered "normal" consumption are there any suggestions of how this performance may be improved ie a custom exhaust, re-chipping or other. I can upgrade to a diesel but want to explore all opportunities before committing to the significant expense of a change over.
Appreciate any feedback.
Cheers

Bottom bouncing - jigging rod
Submitted by Rusty w on Wed, 2012-12-19 23:14Hello all. I am a recent new member to this site but have been following it for a while.
Im after some advice or opinions on a good rod that can be used for mainly bottom bouncing for dhuies etc but also a bit of jigging. I am chasing a rod for a threadline outfit. Most of the fishing I do varies in depth from around the 30m up to 110m. Ideally I run 50lb braid on my reels and like a rod that has a fair bit off play in it and not to stiff. Eventually I want to start doing a bit off jigging also for sambos and the like.
To start with I was looking at a rod around the $300 mark.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers

Submitted by Justo82 on Tue, 2012-12-18 21:47Ladies and gents. I'm looking for some good land based ideas for tailor during the middle of the day. I prefer to use lures. I can only seem to come across tailor just before sunset.
Any pointers appreciated. Cheers.
under sized fish!
Submitted by Jorie on Tue, 2012-12-18 21:27well today i went fishing with a mate to a popular spot in bunno the cut. we were sitting there fishing when a white fish frame on the waters edge caught my eye a big frame of a sweep. all was good as it was of pretty good size but after i was standing there looking into the water another frame caught my eye this one was a pink snapper frame and was rather small took it out and measured it only being 46cm in lengh frame was perfectly in tack so it wouldnt have shrunk. it pisses me off to know there are dick heads out there that do this and not get caught.

Query for rules gurus
Submitted by Ausfisha on Tue, 2012-12-18 19:55Read a thread discussing slide casting for lbf.(ie take a sinker out by kayak too deeper water from land then attach a lively and let it slide up and down line). If this was done in the sound say from the grain terminal and dropped just past the mussel farms then a snapper happens to jump on would I be allowed to keep or do I have to release?

Understanding the distance of a dive flag
Submitted by wogboy1963 on Tue, 2012-12-18 19:19Hi everyone,
Was out diving on Sunday and just about to come to the surface when a boat was above putting around my boat. When I surfaced he was playing with his gps and pinning my dive spot. On top of that after I used every word of abuse in the dictionary he then went and achored 15m away from me. I took photo of this twit and his mate and said I'm posting it on fishwrecked just to let people out there know who you are because alot of fisho's do the right thing. I wouldn't of given a shit if he came in after I left but the nerve of this arsehole was lucky that I didn't dive again and cut his anchor line. Is there a way of reporting this low life as I have proof of the dickhead on my phone camera and now computer. Would it be worth reporting this to Harbour and Marine, if so would they do anything? There has been so many disscussions on these dickheads coming out of no where just because they don't know where to go or how to use a sounder.
Regards
Pissed off Diver and Fisherman. Photo removed by Adam, it's Christmas, let's just take a chill pill.

Press Stud tool
Submitted by West coast pom on Tue, 2012-12-18 11:22Morning all,
Lots a couple of press studs from the boat clears over time, got some replacement studs but having real dramas getting them fixed through the fabric properly using this funny little punch thing i got to do it with- is there a different special tool i can get to fix them on properly? I was thinking some sort of special pliers or something?
It's the socket and button bits that have come off (not the plug section).
Can't seem to find them anywhere- Perth region?
Cheers
James.
