Fishermen winched from water
Submitted by Andy Mac on Sun, 2012-09-23 15:50Reported in the West Breaking News http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/14933442/fishermen-winched-from-water/
"Three adults and a teenager have been winched from the water by the rescue helicopter after their boat overturned when it was hit by a wave near Garden Island this morning.
The stricken dinghy set off an EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority just after 7am and the RAC rescue helicopter was sent to the scene.
All four of the men, who were uninjured, were winched to safety and are being taken to Jandakot Airport where they will be met by family."
Big swells today, so hopefully nobody else got caught out by the conditions.

furuno 585 help and advice please
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Sun, 2012-09-23 14:43Finally looking at getting a 585 with a transom mount transducer for the tub and was after a bit of advice from anyone who has had some expereince with them plz... I havent been seriously looking at them for long but have been doing a fair bit of reading but have some rookie questions:
-Tranny: will a 1kw make much of a difference in terms of speed I will be able to do while still getting a decent read? Or does it only really help in deeper water etc?
-Tranny: I have noticed there are 2 1kw models that get regularly mentioned: the TM258 and TM260. Whats the main differences between these? Im prepared to pay the extra for the 260 if people recommend it being worthwhile?
-If set up properly, what sort of speed can I realistically expect to be able to do while still getting a decent bottom read? I understand that a lot of variables come into play (correct mounting/ settings etc) but what is the usual results with a decent installation and set up? I know it should read alright at trolling speed (correct me if Im wrong, but it should be able to still not just read the bottom but also pick up fish etc at 8-11knts?) but will it be able to do 20-30knts and still give a decent read?
No doubt I will be asking more questions when I get it (waiting on the tax return to hopefully be able to afford it!) but any basic advice on what sort of settings etc to use for this type of searching would be much appreciated as well
Cheers in advance, i know its a heap of questions, but any help n advice would be much appreciated

Anyone know where to get an old pneumatic speargun serviced?
Submitted by Braxi on Sun, 2012-09-23 13:54Hi, I have on old speargun from the late 1970s. My dad gave it to me a while back. It is a Mares Pnuematic gun but it leaks and doesnt hold pressure. I tried contacting Mares but they were not much help. Ended up emailing some lady from Italy that said there probably not any service kits available for it. Does anyone know if there are any dive stores or anywhere I can send it to have it repaired? It is an awsome gun with the two chambers and the handle in the centre like a bazooka. Took it into Karratha and they told me it couldnt be fixed and then tried to sell me a WAY overpriced new gun. Best gun Ive used and dont want to see it go to waste. Cheers.

Advice on OH rig
Submitted by slam on Sun, 2012-09-23 08:54Ok time to buy some new bling. Looking at an outfit to suit bottom bashing mostly using 8oz but some jigging and trolling. I am looking at talica 10 single speed on a Wilson live fibre pe 1-3.i think rating is way out on that one after spending time comparing it to other rods in the range I am after. Hung a 12oz off it and handled it well! Just not convinced on the rod. Any advice on these rods would be good and any other suggestions in that price range of $400 for a rod would be appreciated. Searched old posts but not much on them.

Geraldton weather
Submitted by fishfish on Sun, 2012-09-23 07:44A question for those that have fished out of Geraldton or live there and fish, I 'm possibly tagging along on an Abrohlas trip this weekend and have been keeping an eye on the weather and have noticed that the swell is hanging around {winds tend to be variable }
So my question does the swell play an important part fishing out of there ie travel to and from the islands { I presume the islands would shelter once closer} . I know there are reef breaks further to the north of the town but what about leaving the town ramp { havent looked at the gps yet }.???
Cheers fishfish

exmouth landbased
Submitted by EL SYD on Sun, 2012-09-23 07:16here are some landbased pics of my Aug-Sept trip in exmouth,
alll I can say is the landbased scene was a lot of walking and no fish, my usal haunts produced zip but did see a lot of whales on the horizon and turtles one even knee capped me in the surf,
I might mention that this was where my lures had the most hits where I waded out to the reefs edge but for the life of me could not get a solid hookup, maybe if I dropped the lure size down, who knows.
well anyway here are some of my exmouth monster fish and echidna on the beach

I was thinking of winding the fireline onto the saltist and buying new braid for the stella but not sure which type. any opinions on which way i should go? i use the saltist for bottom drop and stella for jigging.

Broken guide, how/where to get it fixed?
Submitted by Justo82 on Fri, 2012-09-21 15:50So, who can help me. I'm assuming I'll just head to my local tackle shop, but as I've only been fishing for 12 months have never had to get a rod repaired before.
The broken guide is the one on the tip if the rod. It appears to insert into the end and is then attached to the shaft for stability. The rod is a shimano starlo classix 2-5kg. I use it for whiting through to skippy and small snapper.
Cheers

Mulloway on popper?
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Fri, 2012-09-21 07:19A friend and I took the dinghy out for a bit of a test run in the river after a long lay off yesterday and we fished some spots in the canning river. We anchored up in the lee of a point for a bit and benno was working a small popper around. In two seperate casts he had something big have two or three strikes at the popper but no hookup, had both of us thinking what it might be. I know people say mulloway get caught on sp's and other lures, what about a popper?
If it was a bream, it was the grandaddy of them all, but aside from a mulloway, I dont know of anything else with a thick body profile in silver like that?
Aside from about 300 blowies, I managed to bring a nice black bream to the side of the boat, but lose it while trying to boat it as we had left the net behind.
Not a bad day in all.

trolling deep to find new ground?
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2012-09-21 00:11In the past, (in Shark Bay) I (or others on the boat) have caught good size snapper and rankin cod on lures.... trolling.
I have a down rigger, which i haven't actually set up on on this boat since i upgraded, and i am wondering what peoples thoughts are about putting a metal slice lure or mulie deep on a down rigger and trolling that around to see if it gets taken by a pinkie, and in doing so, find new ground?
Has anyone used this method before with any success?

Great Thread!
Submitted by sandbar on Thu, 2012-09-20 20:35THE BIG BLACK SCHNAPPER SLAYING thread is a very good one and needs to be highlighted! Its a shame it has been locked.
I too could have easily acted upon what I first read but chose to read on further.
Thanks scotto for the links to what had taken place earlier, it highlights how easy it is to get things wrong and falsley accuse people of doing wrong.
Happy fishing and fish for the future.
Good luck to all.

kalbarri LBF report
Submitted by tangles on Thu, 2012-09-20 19:56thought id let you all knw whats been caught in barri!
the pinkys have come in early to spawn. a cpl of mates and myself went to a local beach targeting croakers and ended up having probably the best LBF session ever! 13 pinkys average size 5-6kg landed between 4 of us. we all got dusted on some honkers but was well worth it. some large whaler sharks around if you fancy stretching your arms! wittacarra has been good for pinkys tailor and mullaway at night. chinamans has been fishing well for tailor and the occassional pinky on the tides. the south cliffs have been fishing really well for pinkys and mullaway at certain spots.
the river is the healthiest ive seen it with bream sambos mullaway jacks muddies bluies whiting on the in coming tide.
just on a qick note. one of the boys came in this arvo with some photage of a nice sailfish caught just north of the mouth! its gona be a great summer for mackirs n bill fish up year this season!
anyway was just a quick one enjoy the fishi g.
