Submitted by harry_davis on Fri, 2012-09-14 11:42We are heading upto Lancelin in late november, just to chill, sandboard and do some fishing...
As ive never been there fishing before, what can you get thats decent around the area.
Was thinking of the jetty or at the point for some eagle rays just for abit of fun...
What are some other species you can get or is it just the usual beach species ie Tailor, herring ect

Best Tides - Dampier
Submitted by Fozz on Fri, 2012-09-14 08:34Heading up to Dampier the week after next for a weeks fishing/diving. We have spring tides & will be fishing out wide, is it better to fish the bottom or top of the tide chasing bottom dwellers? Any guidance will help, its been a while since I've fished up there.
Cheers Fozz

Submitted by Bluedog on Fri, 2012-09-14 07:02I've had my HDS for a while now but have never been able to figure out how to cut out say the top 20m on the sounder reading so all i see is 20m-40m while fishing in 30m for example. Is anyone on here able to point me in the right direction with this one?

Submitted by brenz on Thu, 2012-09-13 18:36oes anyone else get into this? i have just purchased a 250 quad after being very impressed with how good my mates went in the soft sand and im thinking this may make a good surf fishing option for when the beach is just to soft for a 4wd. if there is anyone else who uses a quad , is there any suggestions or tips you have to make the bike more practical and usefull?

1ks tranducers - skimmer type or shoot through hull
Submitted by Cruise Control on Thu, 2012-09-13 14:36G'Day Guys
Looking for some current feedback on tranducer types.
I am going to acquire a 1kw transducer to suit my HDS8 - the aim is to be able to get a deeper read with better detail. I currently have the bog standard 50/200 skimmer type and whilst this can provide me with a fairly clear reading down to 300m+ the weather needs to be kind and my speed needs to be 5 kts or less otherwise it breaks up. In shallower water, say less than 100m this tranny can read up to 20kts and provide a solid read but I think I am lacking the detail.
When I speak to the sellers all I get is the "sales speak" and it can be very difficult to filter out the BS in the sales pitch - more important to get personal experience and feedback at to the best setup for me. Transducer needs to go into a 686 Cruise Craft which has a designated space in the bilge to locate a "shoot through the hull" tranny.
As I see it I have 2 choices with a 1 kw, the "shoot through the hull" type or the skimmer type hanging off the back. I'm not interested in cutting a dirty great hole in the hull for a through hull tranny. Appreciate feedback from members as to their personal experience, type of transducer and what sounder it was hooked up to, depth, detail etc etc.
cheers

Macarthy incident (not fishing related)
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Wed, 2012-09-12 20:01This is such a tragic event and as the information comes to hand I wonder about the ability of clubs to manage the lifestyles of their assets (human beings). I don't want to pre-empt any forthcoming official findings but it is looking blatantly obvious the this poor guy was on a bender and lost track of what was going on. He left a spot with mates and walked 4 kms to another place and it seems plain to me that he had no idea where he was or what he was doing.
Why these big trips? Why not just go away from the club for a while and spend time with the family or the g/friend and do some fishing? Why do we see the need to expose these young guys to all that is on offer???? Double standards in my opinion.

HDS 8 GEN 1 PALLET DEFINITION HELP
Submitted by captain 1 eye on Wed, 2012-09-12 08:22Gday Sory if ive posted this in the wrong section ,as i cant see a section on electronics.
well ive had my HDS for a year or so now but still having trouble depicting the colour of the bottom ,i know theres a brief description about it in the manual but only basic info is given weak and strong.I live in Darwin and as i can workout most of the bottom round here well in the harbour,is mud with rock underneath .i use pallete 1 or 13 most of the time .Ineed to know please what you guys think ,what colour is weed and does it look like weed on the sounder ,i know that if a colour is thick it means a strong signal ,so indicating rock .Any info on this topic will be awesome .
Thanks Rob
EPIRB information
Submitted by just dhu it on Wed, 2012-09-12 08:05I was on a training course this week and learnt more about the operation system of the 406 MZ Epirbs and found out that there are two models of the standard EPIRBs currently available , one unit non GPS chip which sends out the signal and may take several hours for the sattelites to pin point the distress signal location, and is only accurate to 5 sq KMs , The second unit which is only approx another $ 100 has a built in mini GPS and sends the exact cordinates of the distres location and would take only several minutes to assess your distress position and is accurate to about 125 sq MTS
I think if my rig was in trouble after dark in rough conditions i would want the rescue guys to be looking in 125 mt grid pattern rather than 5 sq KMs . for those who dont know might be worth checking your EPIRB which should be labelled which model it is

Wobbegong shark
Submitted by rooboy111 on Tue, 2012-09-11 21:42Hey Everyone,
Quick question on Saturday night my mate and I went out for a fish on 5 Fathom and my mate kept catching wobbegong sharks. He must have caught at least 5 of them and a couple were pretty big one of them went at least 4 1/2 - 5 foot. We got some cool photos and then relesed them all but my question is can you keep them and if so are they worth keeping ? To be honest i don't think i ever would cause they are just so docile !!!
On another note had a awesome night fishing caught my PB Dhui going to 60cm ( I'm only a beginer ) and a couple of snapper the sharks some western Whirrah stingrays and some KG's. All were released btw we figured we got the Dhui so early in the night we would get another one but lesson learned cause we didnt get another one lol. Im gonna try and upload some photos so everyone can have a look at my Dhui.

Downriggers
Submitted by viking22 on Tue, 2012-09-11 19:32Hey Guys,
Just wondering if anyone has made a homemade downrigger? if so do you have any photos?
I am going to start chasing Sails with rigged bait and want to get them down so the birds dont smash them, any tips on rigging baits for this
and what are the better baits to use eg flying fish, slimey`s etc?
I know you need to troll pretty slow 3-4 knots and by going slow the weight will stay at the depth you are targeting.
Cheers

sunday sesh
Submitted by brenz on Tue, 2012-09-11 19:03Sunday sesh
After a week of rather average weather the decision was made to head down to hillarys in search of a few different species.
We launched the boat at 230pm and squis was first on the hit list. We started our drifts around little island in 2-4 mt of water to not much success wich the desicion was then made to hit some deeper water in the 7-9 mt depth of water. This didnt take long before the squid were on . They were hitting a few different jigs with the standout being the berkley power bait jigs in both purple and pink/olive in the 3.5 size. The squid were not all huge but we did manage one that went just over 36cm hood length. The trick was definatly to work all water columns and not just rely on the usual "fish deep" technique.
Next we were off to find some skippy in the shallows . We pulled up on a nice lump that rises from 13 mt up to 6 on the top and set the burley trail. I was throwing the powerbait t-tail minnow in pink glow whilst my mate was throwing an assortment of other plastics . The skippy came on straight away which provided many moments of holding your breath as they tried exceptionally hard to bust you off on any bit of structure they could find. With both of us on 6lb and many of the fish comming up at around the 40-45cm mark you sure knew they were hooked. Another 10 minutes later saw my mate hooked up solid , Absolutely no line was gettin gained before "PING" the fish was set free. after a few laughs and both discussing what it could have been i had a short whack before getting bricked in seconds and this was the last we saw of the unstopables for the evening . Another thing to mention would be the abundance of small pinkies up to 47cm hanging around which shows how healthy the inshore reefs are..
I would like to say a big thanks to jules who took me out for a run in his tub and it was an enjoyable afternoon out.
