Sounder at speed
Submitted by AaronC on Fri, 2012-09-07 07:54Hi guys
Advice needed.
I currently have a 5.5m ali searider and a furuno 620 with the 600w transducer. Which was on the boat when i purchased it 7 months ago. the motor has a xl leg.
Everytime i go out the sounder seems to work ok until i reach around 12 knots. After then it loses its depth and goes all fuzzy, useless. This is making it very time consuming finding new ground. The boat came with a mounting position as seen on the photos.
How fast does everyone else drive until they lose a good read?
Not sure if its the position of the tranny in relation to the motor? or is this just normal.
Any help would be great.

South Tomi wreck, Geralton
Submitted by mr_meks on Fri, 2012-09-07 07:41So there is a wreck just north of the shipping channel in about 20 metres of water, with an danger marker next to it. Just wondering if this is the South Tomi and what the go is with fishing it. I'm assuming because it was sunk to be a dive location that fishing is a no go, but have not found the proof?

Freaky Loonies storys (pipidinny)
Submitted by tailor marc on Thu, 2012-09-06 20:47Hi guys,
We were just having a talk about fishing loonies. Quite a few weird storys came up.
I was told never to talk about it because we may be locked up at graylands and they would chuck away the key haha.
We had a ufo sighting up close there. Not saying it was alien, could of been something secret from Pearce airforce base?? Wont go to much into that because you had to be there to understand what went on that night.
Other story was just told but some guys that never bullcrap even after a few beers said that they were fishing till 2am and retreated back to the 4wd. They had a little camp fire going and there were around 5 of them. They were the only ones on the beach or so they thought.
The only light from them was coming from the fire and as they were standing around talking some guy walked straight through the middle of them and kept walking, didnt look at them, didnt say anything just passed through between them and disappeared down the beach. Now thats a long way from anywhere to be taking a night stroll down the beach. Couple of these guys tried to say gday but the guy walked straight through like the guys werent there. It apparently had them stunned for hours after.
I have always known it as loonies and found out why on my first trip there with the UFO incident and no i wasnt on drugs or drinking, none of us did that kind of stuff.
Seeing as though its had the name loonies for some time before i knew it im thinking there must be more storys.
Please add to this, maybe a good idea for a up & coming article ;)

FV Margiris Reflagging
Submitted by Leemo on Thu, 2012-09-06 20:06So, who else out there is utterly disgusted that the FV Margiris has been reflagged as an Australian vessel, and been renamed the Abel Tasman?
http://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/306952/seafish-confirms-margiris-name-change/?cs=86
Seafish Tasmania today confirmed the former FV Margiris has now been reflagged as an Australian vessel and renamed the Abel Tasman. Seafish Director Gerry Geen said today there were still some matters which needed to be finalised before the trawler was ready to go to sea.
He said that Seafish took the issue of by-catch minimization very seriously and that the company was comfortable with the environmental conditions imposed earlier this week by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke.
He added that many of these conditions would have otherwise been applied on a voluntary basis.
Mr Geen said it was expected that the Abel Tasman would be fishing initially in the Great Australian Bight.
In response to comments by the South Australian Government, Mr Geen said that Seafish Tasmania would not be competing with the sardine fishing industry, or affecting their catch.

Definitive proof the Fed Govt thinks anglers are stupid
Submitted by scottywiper on Thu, 2012-09-06 09:02Last week Enviroment Minister Tony Burke's office said: "Those in Perth would have to travel over 65 kilometres to reach the nearest non fishing area." This is part of their media campaign that the no fishing areas are so far offshore as to be inaccessible to family anglers anyway and therefore not an issue.
I then emailed his office and said "Surely this is not an accurate quote, given that the Marmion-Two Rocks sanctuary zone is only 5km offshore?"
I got this reponse today: "It is true that the small sanctuary (or Marine National Park) zone in the proposed Two Rocks Commonwealth marine reserve is only 5km offshore. However, the Marine National Park zone in the proposed Two Rocks reserve is also about 65km from Perth."
PLEASE!
How many rec fishers live in the CBD??? How many people launch from there to go fishing? How is the distance from the city centre to the coast at all relevant to angler access?
They are are treating us with contempt and it stinks.

Deep sea fishing in Bunbury
Submitted by Piggy on Wed, 2012-09-05 22:46Gday,
I have been thinking about going fishing in Bunbury soon and I have been hitting google to see if there were any decent catches at the moment and where the fish were biting. I have a 25 foot trophy so distance out isnt too much of a drama, its finding the ground and fish which is the drama and everywhere I look on google seems to be coming up with dead ends and everyone complaining there is no fish in Bunbury.
If anyone would like to give me pointers or let me know if they have caught any lately it would be a great help!

free cutting boards??
Submitted by fisho-ron on Wed, 2012-09-05 16:00hi guys
not sure if there any good but i found theses today...
they are a very hard, almost glass type of resin, they will chip like normal glass but, so you need to be careful with them.
i thought they would make a great fillet board for members that have a sink out the back and want something nice and flat to cut up on, so i grabed them.
we had a glass chopping board in the house for ages until someone(not mentioning names) smashed it, and it was so easy to clean.
as you can see there are differant colors and sizes, the biggest is the red one on top and measures 108cm x 48cm and is 1/2 thick.
the others are slightly smaller and varie in width and lenght.
if you want one it is pick up only from forrestfeild, only one per person, if they dont all go then you can have more.
pm me for address details if your keen, first to pick up gets whichever one they like until there gone.
cheers ron

Interesting article re: super trawler
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2012-09-04 12:3211. Weirdness of fish politics means trouble for the government
David Ritter, writer and CEO of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, writes:
BIG FISHING, MARGIRIS, TONY BURKE, WILSON TUCKEY
Saw this, thought others might be interested
____
A united front of environmentalists and recreational and small-scale fishermen has sprung up to oppose the supertrawler Margiris -- the second largest fishing boat ever built -- from being permitted to fish in Australian waters.
It is a political dynamic that is leading to some unusual bedfellows. In the Tasmanian Parliament, a motion against the Margiris received tripartisan support. Conservationists have even found themselves agreeing with an op-ed by Wilson "Iron Bar" Tuckey of all people, in which the former Howard government minister called for the Margiris to be barred from Australian waters.
Clearly, fish politics can be a bit weird.
Around the world, fish politics cuts across party lines. The reality is that local members with fishing constituencies -- regardless of party allegiance -- will generally fight the corner of their industry. On the other hand, the marine conservation constituency tends to be more geographically diffuse. The result is that it is common for the fishing industry to have a stranglehold on the politics, with the consequence that catch quotas are all too often set in accordance with the desires of the fishing industry, rather than what the scientists recommend.
Australian fisheries managers have a much better record than most countries, although even here mistakes have been made, leading to considerable overfishing. In the case of the Margiris, according to research professor Jessica Meeuwig, of the University of Western Australia’s Ocean Institute, "even at the most basic level, the scientific case is not strong enough" to justify the fishing level that is proposed. In any event, there is a negligible domestic constituency supporting the foreign-owned boat, and real anger and fear among local fishing communities, hence the unanimity of the Tasmanian Parliament.
Unusual alliances also emerge as dreamy sea-lovers and hard-headed free marketeers find themselves united in shared agitation at the sheer irrationality of the international political economy of fishing. The success of concentrated fishing industry lobbying means that very tasty subsidies are often made available in order to keep otherwise uneconomical boats afloat. And it is this rampant subsidisation that infuriates free marketeers. As World Bank group president Robert B. Zoellick told a conference in February, that the first step in reform of global oceans governance "is to stop doing dumb things" like paying out "subsidies that are used for fisheries that are net negatives to the system". The group that owns the Margiris is an example, having benefited from massive EU subsidies.
And the allocation of subsidies leads to a third point: in truth, there is no such thing as a singular "fishing industry" position. The actuality is that Big Fishing -- with huge boats, influential connections, ample capital and operational portability -- shares little in common with the lower impact local small-scale sector. The big end of the fishing industry is of course more than happy to deploy the iconography of the plucky fisherman in his weathered sou’wester heading out in his little boat -- you won’t see an industrial trawler in any retail marketing any time soon -- but the reality is that Big Fishing is a disaster for everyone else.
The difference is one of economics and mobility. Recreational and sports fishers have their favourite patches, and the more sustainable small scale local fishermen are based in particular ports, fishing grounds and communities, all complete with specific local cultural memories. As one fearful fisherman plaintively commented apropos of the Margiris:
"It's so important to me that I can take my little boy out and catch a tuna, and a fish for that matter, for the rest of his life, and then he can pass that on to his children as it was passed down to me … If this super trawler comes into this country and starts fishing, as it has done all over the rest of the world, this will be taken away from that generation and I don't think that should happen."
But for the giants -- the Margiris and her ilk -- geography, community and generational continuity is no object. Based nowhere and owing allegiance to nobody except their owners who profit from our collective loss, when the stocks crash and the fish run out, the big boats just move on. To quote Wilson Tuckey on the Margiris: "European super trawlers have so reduced fish stocks of their more benevolent oceanic environment that they are prepared to sail halfway around the world for a minuscule quota of low-value fish." Moving around the world, hoovering up all in their path, supertrawlers are like giant locusts of the ocean.
Growing awareness of these imbalances is causing significant political realignments all over the world within the fishing industry. Already, in Europe and Africa, small-scale fishermen are now working in concert with the organised environmental movement to break the hold of Big Fishing. The arrival of the Margiris has seen the emergence of a similar dynamic in Australia.
As The Canberra Times observed earlier this week, logic and politics suggest that the federal government should prevent the Margiris from fishing in Australian waters. But on Q&A last night, a frustrated Tony Burke indicated that as federal Environment Minister he lacked the power to block the Margiris from fishing in Australia, though he could at least impose conditions on the ship’s operations. Given the alignment of forces opposed to the Margiris, this is not good enough: Burke’s inability to intervene actually makes the situation harder for the government, which needs to come up with a tougher response to satisfy the growing coalition of opposition to the supertrawler.
If the Margiris is allowed to fish, the political problem for the federal government will not go away, it will only fester.
