Hard to believe I am writing this when it sounds like my house is being hit by a TC at the moment (Tuesday)

But putting a calling out to the FAD regulars for a bit of advice for some first timers...

First things first, looking at the current predicted weather for rottnest both on ever reliable willyweather and windy. Am I right in thinking that the weather for saturday will be suitable?

Bear in mind we are small boat users, at this stage planning to take 2 for safety(reassurance) in numbers, a 6m glass and a 5.2m pressed ally (maybe)...

In regards to Launching, we are planning on driving up from south mandurah, looking to launch at point peron, Navionics suggests that there its only 3 or so km further. than if we were to launch at the likes of woodmans point.

Is this a smart thing to do? or should we be driving further northt?

Most importantly in regards to fish. Has anyone had much success this time of the year? What can we expect to catch and how should we expect to do it?

I usually take an array of stuff to play with, first thoughts is to mindlessly cast stickbaits around, hoping to spot some working birds...

Ive had some advice to stop in close to rotto (Not too close) and get some live herring to dangle around too...

Plenty of wrecks on the map, assuming most of those in that depth would hold a pretty healthy stock of samsom fish?

I am chasing some info on max HP on the transom relating to weight etc. Apparently it is rated to 150HP 2 stroke but only a 115HP 4 stroke.

Just heard an almighty bang from out the side of my place, went outside to find the entire fence on the northern side of the house is now on the ground. Thanks a lot Mr storm 8 ft sheets of hardiflex ( I think that's what it is called replaced asbestos sheets)sheared of at ground level 6 ft high.
Boat on trailer with brakes on pushed 2 metres down the drive way, wind at falcon registered 92 kph time to batten down the hatches me thinks.

The project is supported by the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation and has some well-known fishing names that also support it. With the current regional border closures I cant head to exmouth and have had a couple of trips planned to go there so I'm thinking of heading to onslow instead as I'm in that region can anyone give me some advice on the area it looks like it's a bit further of a hike to get into deeper water is it worth getting out into the deeper water to chase some reds. Are most of the islands good for a look around for a free dive?

I have just picked up a couple of alvey snapper winches that I want to use to fish in 200+m of water would you recommend running mono or braid will be mainly used in the deeper water but may also get used in shallower water for kids I'm thinking mono just In case lines cross over at those depths but not sure on stretch with so much line out. I'm thinking 70 or 80lb. What's your thoughts.

 There is a channel on Youtube for the Schmidt Ocean Institute and their boat, the Valkor. They run a brilliant submersible called SuBastion, goes to at least 4500m, with brilliant video quality and the ability to manually pick samples. They recently spent some time in Australia, first exploring the Bremer Canyon, then the Perth Canyon, then two of the canyons wide of Exmouth. Some of this stuff was previously unexplored. Staff was a mix of Full-time international operators and scientists and people from the WA Museum, including Glenn Moore. The dives are often long, unedited, and they do highlights for each week. 

Below is a link to one of their shallow dives in the Bremer Canyon. By shallow , I mean starting 330 metres, going up to 184m, along the pateau for a bit,  then back down again, working along one wall of the canyon.

if you want to skip to highlights, 1.41 in you find some fishng gear, a float sitting a couple of fathoms off the bottom. Doubtless attached to lost gear. This had me a bit perplexed, but it becomes clearer later in the video. they keep running across ropes stretched tight across the bottom. 1.50 in you are getting up the rise, and the sponge gardens are becoming brilliant. they find a Southern cray at 1.55 in 220m , a king crab a bit later, but there is a surprising lack of large fish life. But that all changes a few minutes later, get above 200m and the bottom and life is just brilliant. Mostly red snapper and swallowtail, but there is a surprise patch of Terakihi. These are common in Kiwi waters, a type of morwong,  didn't know we had them over here. As they go shallower, the bottom flattens, reef largely disappers, but still the sponge gardens. They find a nice queenie at 2.42 in 184m, then go back over the edge. At 3.00, they find what was attached to those ropes--a plastic craypot. These were widely used up this way chasing snow crabs out on the mud, all strung off a common line, and were easily stackable by pulling the pin. So all that gear was likely just lost lines, snagged on the bottom, and snapped off. You can see one of them actually running under a ledge--this form of fishing is really only suited to the deep flat mud.

Defintely worth a watch.

Having just read a post in the "Swan River beginner spots in autumn" post and it had a mention of fishing the canning bridge for bream it brought a smile to my face as I remembered fishing (as a young teenager) for bream off the top of the bridge. Now this was in the late 50s when although it was banned fishing from the bridge it was not rigidly enforced and the traffic was no where near as it is today.

A mate and I would catch various trains and busses up to the bridge arriving late in the afternoon go to the rivers edge dig out some worms and then make our way to the northern side of the bridge on the road way. There you would join the other 10-15 other anglers doing the same thing Your stranded bream gear would be a rod made of Rangoon cane about 6ft long with latest in reels namely an alvey solid wood side cast reel loaded with 20ld mono line going down to a 25lb leader (can't remember the hook used) and a running ball sinker.

About mid evening my mate hooks into a real stonker of a bream, after a couple of minutes he starts to lift his great catch up to the top of the bridge, it is during this activity that everyone holds their breath as many a fine bream has been lost on the way up to the top of the bridge.

The practice then was when you got your fish level with the top of the hand rail you swung it over onto the road way close to the edge and completed the capture, now this worked fine in 99.9% of the time, but not this time.

My mate swung the big bream up over the rail just in time for a car to come close to the hand rail and run over the bream , turning it into a very good size flounder.

It's a very sad thing to see a young teenager coming close to crying and it has staid with me all these years.

 Went out last night chasing some snapper, still a bit sloppy so came into Warnbro to drop a line. I noticed some fish coming into the burly that i thought might be skippy. After a couple of goes i managed to hook one, just to discover that they where small sambo's about 5 to 6 inches long. It was a bit of a suprise as it can only mean that  they are spawning in warnbro sound. Has anyone else come acroos schols of the that size ? there were a lot of them.

over . A simple pollard and oil doin the trick . 
had a quick squid managed a couple but we 

were trolling the jigs with the wind blowing up ..

So I got a small boat which has a Garmin 820xs purely for maps and a Furuno 627 as sounder powered by a TM260 1kw trannie.

My thoughts are to use the 820xs as my sounder as it is capable of receving 1kw unlike the furuno. I do however like the stand-alone set up though and was thinking of replacing the furruno with a dedicated plotter.

Size is pretty inportant as they both only just fit, the mounting bracket is actually screewed through the perspex. Dose anyone have any good surgestion? Did a google search but nothing jumped out.

We have successfully been squiding in the sound with my 2 young boys, building their confidence and sea legs. Our boat is a 4.75 Savage with 60 on the back

My next question is they are keen to have a fish so looking for some pointers on where to head to, as last week whilst squiding the had a ball catching butterfish on the light gear, but hoping someone can point us in the right direction of possibly some skippy and best place to anchor and burley

chasing reccomendations for polish/cutting compound to bring up an older fibreglass hull.

There are places where the glass is looking a bit "milky" & discoloured, so i thought i would spend this down time bringing her back to shiny.

Any thoughts will be appreciated. The easier & cheaper the better. DIY is good for me.

After many years of putting up with an inferior sounder I have bought myself a new one! 

I have mounted the new transducer in the same spot as the previous one, Now the problem I have is that I cant pick up the bottom depth or clear picture anything above 7 knots. Under that speed its perfect.

When I look down at the transducer under the swim platform- there is nothing but bubbles and turbulant water.

Is it a matter of moving the transducer to the starboard side further or ideas please?

Just checking before I drill new holes.

Any advice/help would be very much appreciated.
