Near Tragedy at Quoba
Submitted by carnarvonite on Fri, 2008-12-05 17:06Was speaking to an Ambo mate yesterday, told me they had a callout for a bloke who had gone for an unexpected swim at Quobba
Seems the bloke and his mates were fishing off the lower ledges, with waves coming over about knee deep they would stiffen the legs and keep on fishing, untill one that bit bigger came along and in the drink he went.He managed to get out safely but was cut to ribbons from head to toe from the barnacles and oysters.
Bet he doesn't go down onto the bottom ledge again to be an accident waiting to happen. At least the sea rescue didn't get a call to go looking for him or possibly a body

soft plastic bream
Submitted by damo6230 on Fri, 2008-12-05 16:04in line with previous discussions about SP I fished the Donnally River down south for bream using soft plastics(SP).
in response to Stevef and till thought I would quickly post a forum.
I was using Slam 3' minnow and managed to land a few bream ranging from 33-38cm.
used the SP on 1/20 TT jig heads mainly concentrating on the deeper sections of the river around/adjacent to rock bars/banks.
no fish caught on bait.
all bream released
no phot'os yet as camera at work and I have been away all week. will post later

Stella or Saltiga
Submitted by cen on Fri, 2008-12-05 14:28Now i have seen this placed up alot on sites but never with a good solid answer to solve the age old question!
Stella or Saltiga.
The comments that come back are always 'Stellas better!' or 'Go Daiwa'.
I don't want to see that! i want good solid evidence on why the one is better than the other and to specify,
i am talking about the heavier models ie Stella 18000 and 20000 or the dogfight and expedition.
The reason i ask this is because i am trying to work out which one to buy for jigging and popping.
Cheers Cen

Sea/Drift Anchor
Submitted by Stevef on Fri, 2008-12-05 11:34Hi, Just wondering what length rope people generally think is best for using a drift anchor. I had mine on a fairly short rope, and the bloody thing snapped at the knot last time I was out. I am thinking that a longer rope would end up putting less stress on the anchor and rope.
Any opinions appreciated

Deckie Required - Maybe
Submitted by Stevef on Fri, 2008-12-05 09:18Hi, I might be in need of a deckie out of Mindarie tomorrow. My regular crew is only a maybe at this stage and if he pulls out I will be looking for someone to tag along. Wont be an all day trip due to arvo commitments, but planning to try out a few plastics and jigs in the deeper water.
Let me know if anyone is interested in coming along if a position becomes available.

need help buying rod/reel for augusta
Submitted by byrnedog on Fri, 2008-12-05 08:43Hey peoples,
This is my first post on here, so please be gentle...
Firstly I don't know the history of fishwrecked but well done to whoever started it and to those who keep it going. I stumbled across it in a google search for Bream fishing!!
I've just returned from a long long stint in the UK (very happy to be home and to see the sun again) and are looking to set myself and the Mrs up nicely with some suitable gear for Augusta. I plan on doing a bit of blackwood river fishing and maybe chasing some salmon when it's around. I'm looking at buying maybe two-three rods/reels to begin with but have no idea what would be a good combination for what's being fished down that way.
I'd really appreciate any help from you peoples. It's like learning to fish all over again!
Thanks and Cheers

Junior Landbased competition
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-12-04 19:15Well the junior landbased competition is over and unless there was a later entry I haven't been told about, Flangies has taken first prize with an 18 kg mulloway and Original Teenager 2nd with a 10 kg mulloway.
That was a mighty fine effort guys and you deserved the accolades for the time and efforts you put in to catch some great fish.
Congratulations to all the entrants. Hopefully the competition gave you some impetus to continue to learn more about fishing. Below are some pics of Flangies and OT's great fish.Flangies and OT drop me a PM and I will organise for you to get your prizes.
All the best, Colin Hay

Gravel Patch
Submitted by wrassinator on Thu, 2008-12-04 15:33Department of Fisheries Southern Bioregions Manager Kevin Donohue said fishing for pink snapper was not allowed in either of the Sounds between 1 October and 31 January each year.
Went for a few squid in the sound yesty evening and noticed about 5 boats on the GP. Now i'm not wanting to create any accusations here, but what would these guys be catching out there besides snapper? Mullas perhaps? What do you do if you "by-catch" some poor snapskis mid spawn? Hmmmmm......one for discussion and perhaps enlightenment (on my part).

Experimenting with singles.. or barbless trebles?
Submitted by WODF on Thu, 2008-12-04 13:28Ok what do you guys think about singles for trolling lures? or would barbless trebles be a better option? Considering this for the fish and fishers safety, also i'm a big fan of catch and release so either of these would make it easier.
Would target species make a difference?
Opinions..

day of the submarines
Submitted by brenz on Thu, 2008-12-04 08:10well the day finally came around to head out for a jig with the xzoga boys we got down to east street jetty at 6 when both spess and i looked at each other and both agreed that the day was going to be cancelled due to weather . no sooner had we introduced our selves to all the xzoga/lemax guys we saw the boat cruising up the river. we all borded and headed out . 2 hours later we arived at the south barge with minimal fish showing on the sounder and no fish being hooked in 2 drifts so off to the north barge were we stumbled accross apache charters and a few fish on the sounder. first up was leonard (creater of xzoga/lemax rods) with a nice 25 kgish fish, second drift produced 2 more fish of round the 15 kg mark . after the second drift the skip decided it was still not productive enough and headed for spot X.
45 min later we arived and none of us could have even dreamed about was about to hapen . down the jigs went and all 5 boys were on straight away to unstopable sambos it was incredible that not 1 fish was landed so spess and i got called up to have a crack. i have dropped down in to a hookup straight away to se spess with the same result . i got done over well and truely on pe 6 whislt spess managed to empty his certate completely in seconds what a laugh it was . long story cut short the day was undescribable with xzoga rods blowing us away whilst not even breakiing on a on a large shark dave hooked on, on pe 6 and played with full lock sure put it to the other jig rods i have played with . and a massive thanks to craig and mitch from saltwater charters for providing the best charter i have been on.
brenz
p.s will be plenty of pix when spess jumps on.

trawling lures for swan river tailor?
Submitted by scano on Wed, 2008-12-03 09:00Hi guys,
Heading out on the Swan Friday night with some work mates to get amongst the Chopper Tailor in the river. We are heading near Mossy Bay and Blackwall Reach and will be trawling and flicking lures for Tailor. My question is what do you all recommend as good lures for trawling for Swan River Tailor?
Once we are anchored up somewhere we will be using small metal slicers and wobblers so they should hopefully do the trick whilst stationary. But what do most of you use whilst trolling? will metal slicers and twisty's still do the trick? or would some small bibbed minnow lures be better?
If some of you could mention particular brands or models that would be much appreciated. Something well priced that is pretty effective is what I am after.
thanks for your help

15 or 24kg for Exmouth
Submitted by Simon C on Wed, 2008-12-03 07:50Need some guidance from the locals/experts. Picked up a Tiagra30 from a mate who never used it. HEading to exmouth for two weeks in Feb and looking to have a serious shot at some billies and bigger tuna. Would you recommend spooling up with 15 or 24kg line. Pros/COns of each. Already have a really nice 10kg outfit in the boat. ROd is a Sabre 15-24 so either class is not a problem rod wise.

Sambos - or lack thereof
Submitted by Simon C on Tue, 2008-12-02 22:48HEaded out past Rotto today (very game but conditions were actually ok) with the intention of putting a mate on to some sambos. To cut a long story short, there seems to be a distinct lack of schools yet - did I just miss them, or are they still further out? We tried around the 100mark and the 110 in spots from last year but nothing much on the sounder. Anyone had any luck, wish to PM me if you don;t want to publicly share. Thanks. I was getting some good ambos and YTK's off these spots 2 months ago, but they seem devoid of life at present.

I was thinkin " Woah! a pusuit!!! 10 min later i see this old boat coming into the south passage. 5 min later i see a airforce orion swoop down and get about 50-100 ft above it. The poice and customs came up the beach to us and ask if out dingy was ready to go if needs be haha. Must of going to borrow it haha. 20 min later a big tri hull cat came hammering up and got against it and stopped them. They towed it into shelter bay were it was out of the wind and chop. Pilbara Tropical Fishtank Weekend
Submitted by Kelvin8r on Mon, 2008-12-01 18:23So my mate came up from perth on thurday night for a spot of fishing. I may have talked up my fishing skills a little, but i was fairly confident i could get him onto some edible and good fighting fish.
The new Pajero is getting a tow ball fitted on tuesday so i couldnt get the boat in on friday, cause my mate usually takes the boat out with his car, and he was working so we headed out to the bridge on the way to Point Samson with Fordy and the old girl.
Fordy hooked up to the biggest Scat i have ever seen, and would look fantastic in my fish tank back home. I hooked up to what i think was a baracoota, only to jump off right as i was lifting it out of the water.
Fish: 1 - Us: 0
On came Saturday and we got the boat in and headed out towards rosemary island. We had a troll past tish reef for no joy, and as the weather was looking half decent, we headed out to the patch. As soon as we anchored up, he heard this huge splash in front of the boat, so we turned around to see what it was, and a few seconds later, this massive mako shark launched out of the water, i estimated it to be about 6 and a half ft. Bloody awesome sight, still stoked about it.
We hooked up to some nice fish, only to be swallowed whole buy the sharks, i hooked onto a beauty mako shark, with a nice fight and another big launch out of the water. Great fun.
Fordy hooked up to yet another shark, and with a guide tour of our anchor rope, this is the end result
With all that shark fun, we headed to Chookie Bay for a bbq and then headed home.
Fish: 2 - Us:0
Round 3 - Sunday! With the weather finally giving us 1-3 knots, we heading out again, this time around Enderby Island over to bare rock. The water was beautiful, so it was near on full speed ahead. Our last few trips out to the rock have seen us pull in some nice Coral trout, so i was confident i could put fordy onto a trout. So off our lines go down to the bottom, and out came the bites. Fordy got excited when he got a bit and was hooked on. This the result...
Another nice addition to the fish tank back home. Anyway back it went, and few bites later, and a big solid hookup for Fordy.
Another shark, and another bust off for the big fella. A few more drops and and a few more of those pesky red striped cod thingys and that was about it. The girls started to get a bit sea sick so up came the anchor and we headed for a troll around bare rock for again, no joy! We took off to the small island next to Goodwyn Island. I think this is my new favourite island, a small beach to ourselves, beautiful water, a reef just off the beach about 6m deep. We set up the bbq and had a swim there.
A small troll on the way home, for again no joy and that was it. The fish had beaten us.

Gracetown
Submitted by wrassinator on Mon, 2008-12-01 15:21Just joined the site - very impressed, seems to be a great outlet for all that time you can't spend fishing. After years of surfing the south west, i'm dead keen to do some bottom bouncin down that way before Xmas. Hope to stay in Gracetown.
Can anyone give me some rough guides as to where there may be some ground? Looking at the charts it seems to drop off pretty quick to 50m then to 100m only about 20km out. I guess the old adage of work the contours would be a start but any more specifics would be great.
Any guidance greatly appreciated guys,
Cheers,
