Trip up to Denham early July
Submitted by big123dave on Tue, 2018-06-05 22:12Evening all,
Heading up to Denham for a week or so in the schol holidays (first week of July). I've got a 6.5m Chivers Predator, which is a very recent purchase, I'm thinking about towing it up there. Is it worth it? Taking the wife and the youngsters who love crabs and usual Snapper for dinner.
My question is, is it worthwhile taking it up there? Is there any consistent spots to drop a line in? Not after your spots or anything, just general advice please, they are more than used to me going out all day and bringing nothing home so would be nice to make a change!
Cheers,
Lofty

Sounder vs Gopro images
Submitted by sonofdarryl on Sun, 2018-06-03 18:14I have been doing a bit of gopro videoing to compare with sounder images lately. A lot of learning and trying to document where I can. After reading a lot of sounder how to's I questioned with some of the things stated, which I'm trying to prove with the footage. Anyway I thought a couple of people could be interested and I could upload things as I learn, or with a PM I could share more. I had transfered my old images to an SD card but they got corrupted so I only have the last couple of sessions now! Ended up c/r about 14 dhus over the last two days, one went 10kg but the rest all arond the 6kg and under mark. Most were on a new 300g jig which goes against what a lot recommend, but helps tracking the boat with a resonable drift so you end up covering more fish. Put in a couple of other screengrabs from the last couple of sessions.

building a home in two rocks
Submitted by Meeuwissen on Sun, 2018-06-03 07:53so my wife and i are pretty keen on building a house in Two rocks. We went to the bank to see how much they would lend us and its pretty ridiculous but they said the maxium we could lend is $941000. Not that we plan on borrowing that much. This will be our first purchase and just wanted any advice from people that have gonr through the steps of building. we found a block we like and know that two rocks doesnt have deep water sewerage so we will have to put in a septic tank that will cost $8500 and retaining will cost a bit. What other costs should i be thinking off? Regards Josh

Drum Anchor winch rope
Submitted by silly on Thu, 2018-05-31 19:37hey guys,
any recommendations on anchor rope for a drum winch? Currently have 90m of 6mm double braid (not sure if nylon or poly) with 8m of chain and have snapped it twice while retrieving anchor. First time was after a scuba dive so managed to get it back easily enough. Second time was when I was fishing, Ended up marking spot and diving to get it the following week. It snapped as I drove up to it to retrieve it obviously caught and a bit of swell caused the boat to lift and it snapped straight up.
Thinking of upgrading the rope to 8mm double braid nylon as 6mm i think is too thin, won’t get 90m on it but can settle for less rope..
oh and It’s a sarca anchor so should in theory slide off the reef to retrieve and it’s expensive enough to warrant diving for it.

An equipment warning self bailers
Submitted by uncle on Thu, 2018-05-31 19:09Went out last week in the arfo, was sitting there on the anchor when we noticed water coming in the scuppers, started up,bilge pump on pulled the anchor headed back to hillarys
Week before I'd put on a self bailer bung so I thought to myself had the tube come off. Went down on the back board could feel the rubber bit had come off replaced it with a normal bung and went back fishing. It was filling up with water like Id left the bung out. This could have ended differently had it have been dark! Be aware of these things if using them. They may need a steel hose clip or some thimg to hold them on.

Beware of Mobile Number 0488 828 535
Submitted by Uluabuster on Thu, 2018-05-31 10:39Beware of this mobile number, claimed to be from Information Australia, assisting ATO to give rebate back to eligible customers.
I started quizzing him becos I never heard of any rebate from ATO and asked him to point me to the link on ATO site giving such rebate.
He obviously couldn't and said that is why he is there to help many Australians.
I told him straight how would I know he is not a scammer trying to phish for my identity and I need to verify whether he is legit.
He then retorted saying I probably don't and couldn't afford my own house and mortgage judging from the way I speak.
I told him straight I am not interested and hang up straight away.
A quick google confirms that I was right.

Anchoring at Salutation Island
Submitted by ranmar850 on Thu, 2018-05-31 09:10
Thinking of doing a shakedown camp aboard trip in Shark Bay later in the year. Plan to launch at Baba Head and spend something like 3 days/ 2nights. I know the Tea Tree camp side of the peninsula well enough, and think it is logical to plan my movements around wind and tide, priority being a comfortable camp for the night after fishing ceases. I know how the water just disappears from the bottom of the bay ( at least on the Tea Tree side) when you get a sou'easter, and was wondering if anyone had looked at Salutation Island in this respect. Charts aren't much help, of course, when a couple of foot of water makes all the difference at low, so I've been looking at Google earth as a rough guide to how shallow it "looks", compared to other places which I am familiar with. I know it won't be deep, but would it be do-able, preference being to not wake up in the early hours with the hull starting to touch the bottom? I've noticed it is a reserve, and have looked for information on that, and just assume it is OK as long as you don't go ashore. Not a fishing exclusion zone like Mary Anne island?

Tuesday night pinks with sounder pics
Submitted by z00m on Thu, 2018-05-31 08:59The forecast for Tuesday afternoon looked too good to pass up and having fished the previous Tuesday night for undersize pinks and a just size Dhu, I thought it a good idea to get out and have another crack at an after storm pinky. Being soft I don't like to fish the gale force downpours so waited for after it had well and truly passed.
Launched the boat at Hillarys about 4pm and the deckie supplied the coffee which was a nice touch. A friend had reported some action on the close reefs outside the hole in the wall so we headed there. Using the Garmin side scan to see where a likely place was to drop the anchor.

There was a very light breeze from the NW and the current running north/south meant the boat sat very nicely to fish floaters next to the reef. I got the berley pot set up with some of the ShoreCatch berley mulies. I like these as they seem to keep a good trail going and only have to pump the muncher from time to time. My floating mulie got picked a couple of times and the deckie landed a size baldie. Next the deckie landed a skippy, so it was time to send the fresh skippy fillet out on my floater. Getting close to sunset we started seeing these images on the sounder (image is from later when I remembered to take a screen shot):

Just as the sun went down my floater reel screamed into life with a blistering first run and when I pushed the lever drag up on the reel, it didn't stop. That kind of obnoxious behaviour made me call it for a sambo. Another couple of runs and I gained some line and when it surfaced I was very please to see it was a good pink. Deckie was quick with the net and in the boat went my new PB pink of 85cm. I was stoked.

After dark the action kept going. I had a few more runs that didn't hook up and then another where it came up tight when I pushed the lever up. Funny enough, this 56cm pink came up with an old rig in his mouth that had been there for some time. You can see the rig where the seaweed is growing on it. Circle hook, very thick mono with crimps and a failed swivel at the other end.

All in all, a great little session and back in the marina just after 8pm.
