Catching Tailor in the Swan River

Went fishing in the swan river yesterday. (Secret location)

And another guy that was fishing there caught about 12 Tailor and we caught nothing apart from blowies.

We were both using triple gangs (his were a bit smaller than mine).

Also we were both using half mulies for bait (his were a bit smaller than mine and his bait covered all three hooks my bait only covered 2 hooks)

We were bothing using no sinkers as well.

What was I doing wrong because I would like to know for next time I go there?

Trolling for snapper?

Has anyone done this successfully? I know a few of the yakkers have worked it out but maybe a motor would put them off?

Was thinking about running a deep and a shallow diver over the FFB, as slowly as possible, and in natural/neutral colours like pilchard or bonito...

Gps mapping card question

Hi all. Anyone know if you can run a "C Map " card in a lowrance hds unit or are you stuck with the Navionics cards . Searching around doesn't bring up many answers .

Upgrading very soon and just working out if I need a new card or can steal the one out of my old gps .

Humminbird GPS- transferring waypoints to PC advice plz

As you can probably tell from my last couple of posts, Im giving the tub some TLC this week as the weather gone to crap after the good week everyone else had over easter while I was away working...

Next problem is this: Decided to make a more updated copy of my marks from the GPS (to aviod black gens problem of losing them if the headset gets nicked) and ive done this before a few times, but seem to be having issues this time...

I use the humminbirdPC program to tap into my navionics card and usually just save an excel sheet from that with all the marks, but this time it seems that only the older marks are showing up in the program.... All the ones i want show up OK in the headset, but dont show on the PC when I plug it in..?

Am guessing it could be something to do with transferring them from the headset and saving them on the SD card (like a mobile/SIM card set up), but have looked through all the options on the headset and cant see anything that seems relevent (btw its a humminbird 787c2 if that info helps)

I have tried to just directly open up the SD card, but cant find any data/marks on it....

I know I could just write them all down from the headset, but that means checking what ones i do/donhave by process of elimination etc, and that could take a while...

any advice, as always, is much appreciated!

Fibreglass/ repair advice please

Hi all

was doing a bit of a hull inspection and found this damage (see pic)

Am guessing it was from the nasty gnaraloo track a while back and I never noticed it as it was probably sitting on the roller itself. I ratchet strap the boat down/ let down tyres/ take it easy etc but it still obviously bounced around a bit and hence the damage... or thats what Im guessing anway as other than those trips, the boat only takes 3km sealed roads to the boat harbour and back...

It looks as if its just the gelcoat etc thats missing, as its obviously rubbed down to the glass, and from what I can see it theres no indent/ signs of wear on the acutal fibreglasss itself.

I asked for some advice from the local boat shop up here and hes put me onto a product called Flokote, that apparently mixes with a catylist and just paints on (once the areas been sanded/ prepared etc)... It hardens to a white colour apparently and is a tough resin so hopefully this should sort it out?

Couple of quick questions for those who have expereince in this sort of thing:

- is this the best way to go about repairs/ best product to use?

- Ive been told to just sand back the gelcoat about 10mm around the area (as the flokote wont stick to paint etc), mix it with the catalyst in 1:100 ratio, stir it till it starts to thicken then paint it on, wait for it to dry and then repeat. Any tips/ advice on the process?

- Rollers: The local boat man also mentioned that the rollers on the trailer might be a bit too hard and this added to the problem. From memory, I think theyre the semi-soft red ones, but would putting the softer black rubber ones help avoid this again, or is it just the bouncing around on the track which causes it and the rollers wouldnt make much difference...?

Sorry for all the questions, but am going to have a go at fixing it over the next few days so any advice would be much appreciated

Groynes Hillary Boat Harbour

Does anybody on Fishwrecked fish the groynes at Hillarys Boat harbour. I'm trying to get fishermen friendly access to the groynes at Port Geographe in Busso.and had the same old arguments thrown at me as to public safety and who's responsable for maintenance etc. etc. and wondering whats the go at Hillarys. Things like, are there footpaths giving access to the end of the groynes for fishermen and built in fishing platforms for fisho's to use? Any info. will be very much appreciated.

Guilderton (Moore River) Bream this weekend

Just wondering if anyone knows if the entrance is currently open (or if there is much water in the river?

Also has anyone had a go at the bream recently in the river, would be good to hear your report.

I’m looking at putting the tinny in the river this weekend for a bream fish.

Daily boat limits for the Gascoyne region

Good morning all,

Just need to clarify the boat limit for demersal/pelagic species in the gascoyne region. The fisheries pamphlet states a daily mixed demersal bag limit of 5 fish however I highly doubt it if I had 3 people fishing on my boat (with current licenses) we could take a total of 15 demersal species in 1 day. I may have misread the pamphlet somewhere however I can't seem to find the daily boat limit.

Thanks in advance.

Anybody running a Furuno FCV-295 ?

I am looking to get one.

Some Questions:

Would you buy it again knowing what you know now?

Are the worth the money?

Which transducer are you running?

Any "add-ons" you would get with it?

Cheers in advance.

Dongara Mullas

So back to fishing, went to Dongara for easter and caught bugger all of note. While walking out on the harbour groyne just chucking a metal before sunset hoping for Tailor, I clambered over some rocks next to some blokes fishing and there laid out on a rock were not one, not even two, but THREE nice Mullas all about 1-1.5m long (dunno what weight that would equate to). There was a bunch of them there, possibly a dozen of them spread along the end of the groyne though i'm not sure if they were all mates. They knew what they were doing, had a gaff and all. As far as I could tell they were using mulies.

I tried off the beach a few days later with live whiting for bait and got fuggall. Anyone else caught that many mulla in one session?

Abrohols Help

Okay this will be a long one...

You see i have a relly with conections in gero to a sailing club, they bought a cray boat as a "support boat", and they also sometimes use for fishing the abroholos, in the future there may be a chance he'll ask me to come along to the abroholos, im 14 and have an overhead for trolling and bottom bouncing (braid though), a nice small combo 3-7kg whiting rod, a Soft Placky rod -> slinghsot, and am getting a plfeuger salt 50/60 for jigging and poppering, lures etc,. also got a fly rod, 7wt i think. I would have $100 bucks to buy lures, jigs, SP's hooks, sinkers leader etc, already have trolling lures though. Im not sure where or how we would fish, but what are the items you would take if you only had around $100-150 bucks,  (give i already have rods etc.).

So what would the top items i would take if i only had 100-150 bucks. Things like leader, SP's,lures, jigs, lucanas jigs, basically the must haves, and also things like leaders, i have 10, 14, 1nd 25lb, Basically the top items you would take to fish the bottom, and topwater at the abrholos.

Sorry bout the vagueness, it might not even happen, but i want to be prepared if it does.

finally a barri pink on fly!

took the tinny up north this mornin. flat as was able to get right inside in the gutters to try for a pink on fly. took a while, lost a few flys but eventually managed to rip this stonka out! gave me grief for a bit and had to try n contain my excitment but finally got him in! 15ft of water, on a Penn Gold 12w n light saltwater reel. the flys were made at home when theres nithn to do so even better catch on a homemade one! very addictive fishing!!

Forward controls

Hi all,

As I stated before I got a old merc 35hp and im currently having issue with it. The forward controls are buggered they just get stuck and rev the engine crazy. I pulled them apart and looked inside and it looks to me like ware and tare ( heaps of play in the throttle)

Question is : Do you have to buy controls that are branded by the engine ?
What would second hand controls fetch in price ?
Anyone know somewhere in Mandurah/rockingham to replace them ?

Cheers for advice, I miss my boat!

Stylez

Newbie poster

Hey all, been reading the forum for some time now and decided to get my act together and register!
Im from Mandurah and love my fishing as does my 5 year old boy.
I have a old 14`boat with a merc 35 on the back ( red band) I think they are called ( as I said ooold)
When that's going you will find me at any boat ramp possible.

When im not on the boat I take the 4wd and the family to whitehills-preston for some good landbase fishing.

Hope to be part of this community and have a decent fish to post on your brag board ( bloody good efforts there!!)

Cheers all,
Stylezy

Night fish report.

We left my house with my 12ft dingy to head to leeuwin boat ramp, then motor out about 7nm to our snapper spot in about 22meters of water.

sounded out a lump and anchored up a bit so we drift over the spot with our lines, the current was strong pushing our baits opposite to the drift, very annoying

anyway pulled out the 5k stradic and put a floater rig on it with a whole squid as bait, this was the first rod in the water just as the sun had hit the water, turned around to make my other rod with a patternoster on it, just looped the sinker on when all of sudden the stradic starts screeming off, couple really good runs later and up pops my PB snapper of 92cm, stoked! havent even got the berly in the water yet haha my mate isn't even in the water yet and i've already got a stonker pinky :P

thats when i called up my old man and bragged about the catch :P apparently he wasnt very happy hahaha, now he is annoyed and is going tonight

then it went quiet for a bit for about 30mins, then the bottom bashing rod went off and up comes a port jackson.. great.

couple minuites later the skippy start coming on the bite, for there size the skippy put up a really good fight, going to take my bream rod next time

over the night we ended up getting the 92cm pinky, 50cm kg, small pinkies, 2 dhuys(one was 15cm), hammer head, 2 gummy sharks, bronzie, a big ass cray!, heaps skippy, couple port jacksons, massive yellow tail bream?, think thats all i can remember lol.

ended up being a very good night and it's the 4th time we have been in this spot fishing at night for pinkies and cleaned up on dhuys/pinkies it is also the second time we have got a crayfish on the rod, big ones aswell.  going again tonight on dads boat, lets see how they go

this was my previous pb

my cray from last trip

my new pb from the tinny last night

Road Rage Rant

So after the Easter holiday madness I have some whinghing to do about drivers. To put it in context i'll go back in time a little; when i was young the old man would take us down south in an old yellow Volvo which tonked along at about 80-90k's. Not only was it slow already, he'd pull over fairly frequently to allow others past, adding more time to the travel (which I whinged about, as younguns do). When he got a better car, the situation was reversed and we'd get people pull over for us, just occasionally, and i suddenly could appreciate the practice.

I don't think I can remember anyone doing this since I've been driving. It's pretty friggin selfish behaviour (caravan drivers, boat trailers etc take note) to be doing 80k's along Indian Ocean Drive on Easter, (along the stretch from-correct me if i'm wrong- before Jurien all the way to where it rejoins the Brand Hwy, where there are no overtaking lanes) with 20+ cars banked up behind you wanting to get past... And the road is fairly lacking in nice straight stretches where you can safely overtake, especially at night... and not to just pull over for 1 minute or less to let some people past. Plus, its friggin dangerous to actually overtake people on this stretch of road, at night, etc. Its made especially worse when the cars immediately behind the slow driver wont overtake, which means you either have to try and overtake 5 or more cars at a time or frog-hop along overtaking 1 or more at a time to finally overtake the slowpoke at the front.

I consider myself a fairly safe driver, my mates even call me a nana at times, but on these long drives if i can do the speed limit I will, and nothing over. If its a stretch with fairly regular overtaking lanes than its not so much of an issue. Sitting on cruise control at 110 I even had half a dozen people overtake me; when there behind me obviously wanting to overtake, I simply do what the truckies do and give em the right indicator and slow down a bit when its safe to overtake me. Not my problem if they want to speed, I'd rather let them past than have them sitting up my ass.

Which brings me to an incident on the way up on Thursday night. I'm guessing it was about 30k's before Jurien, when i found myself behind a 4wd doing about 100. I wasn't right up his ass, but just close enough to overtake if i got the opportunity (I hate tailgaters). Anyway, I've been behind this guy for atleast 5 or 6 minutes when suddenly all his lights go off; initially i thought "shit maybe somethings wrong with his car". Then as he kept driving along like this i began to suspect something was up. I figured, the only light he's got is my headlights...he thinks my headlights are bright enough to drive...He thinks my high beams are on?? Sure enough, he flicks his lights back on and then slows right down. Righto, whatever i'll overtake then. Of course he speeds straight up behind me and chucks his high-beams on, and starts tailgaiting me. I tried flicking my high beams a few times to say "look dickhead, they wern't on" but he doesn't get it. I slowed down to about 70 for a while to annoy him back but realised it was pretty dumb and accellerated up to 110 and away from him. If by any chance you're on this site, what a knob-end you are.

Anyway thats my rant. People with traliers/caravans/boats no doubt have their own views and reasons, but its pretty ridiculous when (especially on the way back on Monday) theres literally 30 or more cars banked up behind them doing 80k's. Rant over.

canning bridge/raffles

Hey guys just started heading out to canning bridge and the little jetty behind raffles these past few weeks so thought i'de let ya know how I've gone. Went out last week tuesday and caught alot of 20cm bream and a few just over 25 from about 12pm-5pm. Went out again on thursday and again alot of little bream around but caught about 5 aorund the 27cm mark. Decided to head out again tonight and got my pb so far with 29.5cm (only just started fishing again this past month) and a couple of 35cm tailor. Also been round the flats chuckign soft plastics around, been doing alright with 1 or 2 a session and generally spooking another 2 at least >.<
Im yet to get onto a bream on soft plastics tho past few trips have all been on baits. Are there any tips for bream on soft plasitcs or even hard bodies round that area?

Luck on squid??

hey, i was woundering how people are doing with squid atm? or if its to early for squid, might go out in the little dingy with the 5 hp :) on it just at woodies when the winds low. maybe a snorkle aswell if its not to cold haha.

Fresh fish bait in Exmouth

Just a matter of curiosity.  I will be fishing Exmouth in a few weeks time and would like thoughts on what fish is good for bait up there.

Similar to our humble wrasse and seargent Bakers for dhuies, what fish would you use fresh whilst fishing?

In the past I have found a nice big piece of tuna works well along with some Cally squid.  Trevally doesn't have as much bang with the fish.

Any thoughts?

Thank you

chopped off

If the owner of a 6-7m cat that was about 3 miles north of cape nat around 4.30pm today is a F/W member, just to let you know that you chopped off my lure as you belted past my stern today.

In the future it might pay to give other boats a bit more room, especially when they`re travelling at 5 knots and have two slightly bent rods sitting in the rear rod holders.

Cheers

Woodman Point Shop

Hi guys (and gals),

it's been decided that I'm taking a friend and going fishing in the morning

bad news is I've no bait, but I know the shop at woodies sells it,

but don't know what time it opens. anyone know?

Or does anyone know of an alternate place to get bait from on the

way from armadale to woodmans point from 5am onwards..

I know you used to be able to get bait from petrol stations, but must confess

I havent seen any on sale for ages

Thanks in Advance
