Flatrock Frolics
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sun, 2009-04-12 12:14With the promise of a beautiful day and light wind conditions, Sherbs, Andrew (Son of Sherbs or SOS), Topper and myself decided to make a quick dash up to Flatrocks to try our luck.
After a few unscheduled detours we arrived to find a misty cloud setteld over Flatrocks and the Flatrock itself already covered by a bit of water.
With high tide still a few hoyrs off, we decided to head a couple of hundred metres down the beach to where there was a nice patch of water between the beach and some offshore reef.
Peppering the water with a good dose of Spess' Spessial Brew we were soon into a good school of quite decent sized herring.
Sherbs soon switched to his favourit "blue bait" and began to pull in some nice double headers, Topper landed a nice double header of a sand crab and a herring, my surf popper outfit accounted for a few quite nice herring and Andrew had a lot of fun on some acrobatic herring on his 1000 Okuma and Strudwick bream rod outfit.
Topper provided some of the highlights of the day when a quite sizeable stringray smashed one of his outfits and a particulary feisty sand crab tried to take the top off of one of his fingers.

Topper prepares to do battle with a big stingray and a crabby crab.

Andrew is pretty happy to be back on his feet again.

Sherbs the master of the double header prepares his beach gear

The surf popper rig was very tempting to some nice sized herring

Topper and Andrew show off Toppers crab and herring double header, seconds before the crab turned the tables on Topper.

Andrew does a "Honshu" with a herring while I was pretty happy with this hard fighting Skippy.

A found a nice little area with a reedf system within casting range.

Some of the mornings fish, many of which will be head up to Exmouth for use as bait with Andrew.
All in all it was a great morning with great company. How can you beat being away from the rat race, on a beautiful beach, with great weather and friends.
All the best, Colin Hay

Suggestions for fishing with the remaining Easter days!
Submitted by Snort on Sun, 2009-04-12 08:48Hi guys,
Well the new home is taking up so much time and i've not been able to get a rod out yet but am looking to head somewhere tonight and tomorrow.
Anyone have any suggestions as to where i should try (landbased in Perth) and what i should target? Was thinking of heading down to the north mole as i've never been there before or maybe Hillarys. Any reports from either location?

get ready to get screwed again on boat fees
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Sun, 2009-04-12 05:24http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,27574,25321320-2761,00.html
{Registration fees for boats less than 9.99m would increase from $124.30 to $223.10. Boats between 10m and 20m would be subject to an increase from $231.70 to $506.90.}
well thats almost double for my old tub.
And what does the government give me back..SQUAT!!!
3rd world refueling facilities around Perth...yes I have seen better in many 3rd world countries. With the fires at Rotto and other places, you'd think they would have upgraded refueling facilities and fire protection ( oh and I am qualified to comment, seeing I designed, installed and commissioned the refueling system for a naval port in 2004! with full fire protection)
then lets not start with lack of pens, public jetties to moor at for lunch on the Swan, or anywhere else in general.
Getting people on and off your boat around Rotto is a farce these days. You forced to beach your boat, as the two small areas you can get people on & off are utterly inadequate for the amount of boats in the area...
Maybe I need to buy a ferry to get service from the state...because Joe-boat-owner does not!!!
yes, my 5am rant for the day!

BBQ'd Ugly Stik
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sat, 2009-04-11 20:00I bought this rod in 1995 after a devestating house fire that left me with all I had on and that's it! Naturally, this rod has some sentiment to it and means a lot to me. It has winched and popped and tossed, been thrown around everywhere and still remains faithfull to me. So; it's time for a makeover.
I'm using my BBQ spit turner to do the trick here. A new coat of clearcoat greatfully sold to me by the boys at the Tackleshack (at great expense may I add LOL).
I will post pics of the results in the next day or so.
Oh, BTW. Mad Fish is a secret ingredient to home improvent efforts by me....
UPDATED 12/04/2009
last pic is the end result. It didn't take much to bring the old girl back to life. Just a bottle of red to steady the nerves :)

Emergency help---Broome trip
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2009-04-11 14:13Would you or wouldn't you take a Trailcraft 5.4 to Broome from Karratha in lieu off charters in Broome. Thinking about the fuel and time but I suspect I should take the boat as I have the time.
Original plan was not to take the girl.
Also more space then and can take the Engel with cold beer.
The home engineer suggested why not and I cant disagree.
What do you all think?

Eerie Scenes at Mindarie Today
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sat, 2009-04-11 13:15I have just got back from doing my Saturday chores at Woolies in Mindarie. Coming back via Marmion Ave I saw what I thought was thick smoke. It was in fact a pea soup like fog coming off the ocean. Quite strange really. Anyone else see it?

best time of year to fish Wagoe?
Submitted by scano on Thu, 2009-04-09 09:25Hi guys,
Me and a group of mates are thinking of heading north to wagoe to check out the beach fishing. I have read several post's on here with suggestions on rigs and what you can expect to catch. My question is what time of year is normally best to go?
We would be shore based and looking to go for approximately 5 days. Would mainly be chasing larger species such as Snapper, mulla's and perhaps Mackerel.
any info much appreciated.

Kalbarri land based
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2009-04-09 08:57Hi guys,
I am going up to Kalbarri for the first time with the family in a campervan early next week.
Not much space to sneak a big rod with, but can take a 9 foot 2 piece with a medium size reel and limited tackle.
Any suggestions where I could sneak off for an early morning or late arvo fish?
Can rent a boat, but don't know the area at all - river mouth any good?
What species are best to target up there?

Dampier fish, what could it be
Submitted by crasny1 on Wed, 2009-04-08 13:10Unfortunately left the camera as we were only going for a crab, but decided to fish near some structure in 18m of water last saturday night. Caught 2 fish that have me baffled. Catfish head, close to metre in lenght, fight like a sportsfish with multiple runs, no give up like a true cattie, and with a large sickle tail. Silver blue in colour and almost looks like a shark in the H2O. Caught right on bottom.
Never seen one before but they fought like the blazes and had my Miller barra stick and Curado screaming.
I just wonder if anyone has any ideas about what it could have been. Both released TFAD (to fight another day).
