Any recomendations for an approx 8' spin rod? Mainly for lure casting, sps, stick baits medium poppersetc on the flats up north and off the rocks around town and down south. Gonna be matched up to a stella 4000 mainly, probably running pe2, 35lb. Ideally around 4-8kg, maybe a little heavier.

Price range around $200-300, a bit flexible though.

I ask, because I am chasing quality whole occy. I feel the general run of the mill stuff I purchase from the normal shops isnt that great. Obviously the ideal situation is to go and catch it yourself, but we all know that sometime time doesnt permit.

Taking a guy from work fishing tomorrow as he is new to fishing and looking to get into it. he mainly just wants to catch a feed but i want to get a balloon out with the easterly aswell. sick of getting nothing at all the metros beaches and jetties so i was hoping for some suggestions on some beaches. willing to travel about an hour and a half at the most and we dont have a 4wd so kind of limits our options. i was thinking maybe around secret harbour way but not sure. any help would be great,

We have been lucky enough to get our hands on one of the New Daiwa 2012 EXIST'S. This Saturday(3/2/12) we are going to give you the oppitunity to have a cast "on the water" down at deepwater point, just over from the deepwater point cafe. We will also have a selection of Daiwa Black Label series of rods down for you to put the Exist on and you can even bring your own reels down to test out a Black Label. Feel Free to drop down and have a few test casts to check out the New Exist 2012 and have a chat, who knows you might be the first person to catch a fish in W.A. on the new Exist!

so i was playing around with the webcam, and somehow ended up incorporating my 1st shark jaw i successfully removed.

Cut as much as i could, then left it on an ant mound for 3 days for the ants to eat. came out ok. 90% happy with it

Hi all, can anyone tell me if you can get Slimies Mackeril at Exmouth to use as live bait, or what is the the norm up this way and the best spots to try for these little critters we want to troll some around the surface activity, if the men in grey coats will allow us to do so.

I was looking at the alot of surface lures & poppers etc

I have found a couple which I think might be a go-er

But I would like to hear what else has worked for people! Im not really big on soft plastic fishing but willing to give it a go if you have any tips!

Greenwashing’ forces poor policy on Australian seafood consumption

Known internationally for myth-busting on fisheries and oceans management, Dr Ray Hilborn will launch a research paper on Australian fisheries that says marine parks do more harm than good in sustainable fisheries management.

Dr Hillborn, (Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington State)  maintains that Australia and the world’s seafood supply is threatened by unwarranted concern about the sustainability of fisheries as portrayed by environmental NGOs.

As Australia is set to get the world’s largest marine park in the Coral Sea, world-renowned marine scientist Dr  Hilborn has debunked the science behind the lock-up of Australia’s seafood resources as ‘faith based’ and not science.

He maintains Australian fisheries are sustainably managed, yet governments continue to lock up vast areas of our ocean’s natural resources, threatening consumer access to Australian seafood and impacting food security (noting Horvat’s hesitance re food security angle).

He says fisheries have low environmental impact compared to other sources of food production.

As part of a week-long visit hosted by The Sydney Fish Market, Dr Hilborn will launch a paper which dispels the ‘faith based’ science being touted internationally by enviro NGOs.

The truth is:

•    World fisheries stocks will not collapse by the year 2048, as is often claimed, or any other time soon;

•    The majority of the world’s fish stocks are not over-fished;

•    Commercial fisheries are not “fishing down the food web” (starting with large species and gradually fishing their way to a point where nothing will be left but jellyfish); and

•    Large marine protected areas are not required to restore fish numbers.

Dr Hillborn has called upon the fisheries community to question the strong movement of faith-based acceptance of ideas, and a search for data that support these ideas, rather than critical and skeptical analysis of the evidence.

Context:

•    Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke’s proposal for a one million square kilometre marine park includes a complete ban on trawling, with additional restrictions on commercial fishing and a complete no take zone for amateur and professional fishermen in the green zone component.

•    Already Australia imports 70% of its fish – if we lock up Australia’s fishing resources in marine parks Aussies won’t have access to Australian fish

•    Australia’s fisheries are amongst the most conservatively managed in the world. Most of the world is aware of this, but Australia actively refuses to accept the credit!

His contribution to environmental and fisheries science has been recognised by many awards including the Volvo Environmental Prize, the Ecological Society of Americas Sustainability Science Award, American Fisheries Society Award of Excellence and the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists Outstanding Achievement Award.

when it comes to balooning off the beach or a jetty with a hole fish as bait or a decent fillet, what size baloon do you use? do you use helium? i want to get into it just want some pointers first, cheers!

im just about to buy some penta trim tabs

they come with 2x 2.5m cable and 1x5m cable.

does this sound like enough cable? obviously one for power, one for connecting tabs to control unit etc etc.

but im just a little worried that from the transom of my boat up the back, down the side and to the gauges will be longer then 5m.
my boat is only 5.5m long, but there would be a bit of winding aroundto get there...

 any help be greatly appreciated

hey, this may be a bizzare forum topic, but humour me, please.... for my sanity

my wife will only fish with a handline, and does it very well.  is there an absolute need for a swivel between the main line and the leader? or would a double uni knot be sufficient?  I am thinking about just reducing the number of connections in the line to reduce the chance of breakages or swivels giving way.  the 80lb main line will have a running sinker clip and teardrop or bomb sinker, tied to a 100 lb leader which will be tied to a no 8 circle hook.  to be used in shallow water in shark bay (less than 12 metres)

in the past have used a paternoster rig with success, but just trying to simplify things in the shallower water.

New to the forum but browsing through some of the threads it looks like there is an abundance of valuable information and knowledge to tap into and thought it would be a crime not to post my proposed adventure up here. By the looks of things im not the first to do such a trip as i came across a thread similar to this on here.

I plan to circumnavigate Australia on my bicycle, fishing and spearing the coastline where i can, looking for work along the way to top up supplies enough for the essentials. I start next week (9th March 2012), leaving Byron Bay and heading north. It will be great to meet other keen fisho's along the way, so please dont hesitate if you have the time to get in touch. As you know good fishing opportunities can be hard to find when you are away from your own special spots.

ive been fishing since before i can remember and was lucky enough to grow up on a boat with my old man, fishing most of the east coast. Over the last 5 years i havnt had access to a boat and have become quiet the keen rockhopper around my local headland, Cape Byron. If anyone has any advice, work, or are willing to put up with me for a days fishing i would be extremely grateful.
