Anyone had any success at the Barges / Containers etc lately
Submitted by hunterdive on Sun, 2012-01-01 14:53hey gang,
I'm going to take some American friends out on Wed / Thurs hopefully for a jig. All they have done is a bit of freshwater fishing as they're from up the north around the great lakes. Has anyone been out to the usual Sambo deepwater spots lately and how are they fishing?? We got smashed by sharks everytime we went there last year, and I said I wouldn't go back there just to loose jig after jig, but the thought of giving these guys a rampaging Sambo on the line is too much. Also on another note, in general terms, anyone had any success with shallow water sambos around rotto?
The plan hopefully is to head out wide for a jig, then find spend some time in closer for some demersals etc, cause Thursday is looking sweet at this stage

where to take the missus crabbing
Submitted by dakka on Sun, 2012-01-01 11:06
Howdy all
First off happy new year to everyone![]()
It has finaly happened ive had our little ally runabout for about 5years now and finaly i got the missus out on it for the first time last night.
we went and anchored up at the foreshore in rockiingham to watch the fireworks they were pretty good.
anyway the missus realy enjoyed it, now she wants me to take her crabbing(wow),so if anyone can point us in the right direction as to where we can go either cockburn sound or warnbro or maybe even mandurah to go crabbing. i dont want to scare her because it took so long for her to come out, and she is petrified of sharks. so any info would be greatful eg depths bait etc etc. if she likes it i might be able to get an upgrade quicker (heres hoping )
cheers

Year in review (2011)
Submitted by KenTse on Sat, 2011-12-31 22:42Hi all you Aussies!
Been a while I've been here...I don't have any Australia fishing reports to post (wish I had though, haha)...so I don't post often...but I thought I'd share a little bit of my fishing year with you.
This year was pretty interesting. I started off the year with no travel plans...and ended up going to Florida and Massachusetts in the end. What a bonus!
I ended the year with 37 new species...9 from Ontario, 23 from Florida and 5 from Massachusetts.
A couple of especially challenging local targets stood out...
1) Bowfin (Amia calva)
It took me 7 trips of careful observation and adaptation of techniques to finally catch one...and at the end I caught 3 so far :D
2) Northern Hogsucker (Hypentelium nigricans)
It took me 4 trips of obsessive observation and patience to finally catch my one and only.
A couple of notoriously difficult bait thief were actually surprisingly easy to catch...
1) Tautog (Tautoga onitis)
Tautogs are said to be hard to hook due to a super hard, bony mouth and they are very selective for green crab. However, I had no trouble at all catching 8 of them using sand worms...go figure.
2) Sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus)
Sheepsheads are said to be very keen at taking bait off the hook. However, a small adjustment on hook placement on a live shrimp proved to be the undoing of many sheepshead. In fact, they were in the way of my quest for other Florida species.
A few unaccomplished goals this year had me yearning for more...
1) Goliath Grouper
I went to Florida on a charter with Ben Chancey for a chance at a Goliath Grouper. We missed one hit...and had a mystery fish ran into snags. It was an expensive charter for a highly exclusive fish...I'm not sure if I will have a chance at it in the future. :(
2) Spanish Mackerel
On the same charter with Ben Chancey, Ben threw a cast net and netted a 15" spanish mac! However, when my threadfin herring was hit by a spanish mac, it didn't stay on the hook...and I got to see the fish teased me on the surface by swimming off with the herring in its jaw.
3) Haddock
I'm pretty sure on my second cod trip I hooked into a haddock that came off the hook. People left and right of me were catching them...haddocks just can't find my hook. :(
There was one fish I was really happy to get luck with. It wasn't because it was not an "expected" target...but just the size of the specimen was unexpected! I was expecting to catch a small snook...but this one came in at 33"! That's a good snook in anyone's book.
Common Snook
** You know...I forgot how many times I've helped people with their "firsts" this year...
Chiara, Stephania and Andrea's first time ice fishing...and their first Yellow Perch

Andrea's first White Sucker and first Ontario Steelhead...

Andrea's first Common Carp in Ontario...
Andrea's first Longnose Gar
Andrea's first Brook Trout
Matt's first Longnose Gar
This little girl's first fish...and her dad, Jack, with his first fish
Dave's first Brown Bullhead, Channel Catfish and Common Carp (and many White Perch that I don't have picture of) while fishing with my buddy Mike

These little kiddies' with their first sunfishes
Shane's first fish on the fly
Shane's first brook trout (on the fly...and now he bought his own waders and fly rod  )
Andrea's first King Salmon
Hopefully 2012 will have some surprises thrown in. I don't have any travel plans...but maybe I can apply to a conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico...and maybe if I can graduate some time in 2012, I may take another trip to Hawaii :D I'm running out of local new species target...but there are at least the white crappie and greater redhorse for 2012 :D
And hopefully I'll have more opportunities in 2012 to help people with their "firsts"! I'm already planning trips to help Andrea catch his first Lake Trout, Lake Whitefish, Walleye, Black Crappie and Pike through the ice...and maybe next summer I can help him get a Bowfin, Shorthead Redhorse, Golden Redhorse, Freshwater Drum, Mooneye and Channel Catfish. I'm also hoping to take Shane out for more fly fishing and guide him to his first Brown Trout (maybe even a Longnose Gar). Next year will be very busy for me

Hi all
Submitted by Smasha on Sat, 2011-12-31 14:30Hey everyone, long time lurker and all that, having a squiz at all those jealousy inducing pics on this site.
Thought I'd say g'day, the fishing bug has only just bit me again recently after pretty much doing nothing for the last decade after having moved down from Port Hedland. Those were the fishing days...though it had its quiet moments, I'd be hauling threadfin salmon, (I had tried for years to get these and then one day out of nowhere I landed two beauties) bream, jacks, flatheads, nice whiting, the odd barracuda who wandered in a bit too close to shore (!), gardies, long toms etc etc. Had this weird veiw for years that fishing anywhere else wasn't worth it until my trip to Kalbarri last month changed that for the better, landing my first ever tailor and having lost a few bigger ones as well.
Anyway, enough sentimental jabbering. Just wondering if anyone ever bothers with the area around the Ocean Reef marina? Was down there this morning having my first proper crack at fishing in the metro area, off the rock wall facing south and had no luck, had more snags than a barbeque. Guy a bit to my right hauled in a quite a few herring (I think). Everyone else seemed out of luck as well. Was thinking of giving Hillary's a shot next time off the south wall. I like to pick out an area and have a shot but if any more knowledgable types on here have any suggestions along the coast, I am open to them.
Cheers guys.

Submitted by doublej on Sat, 2011-12-31 12:52Hi all.
I have one of these and was hoping I could get some help on transfering waypoints from PC to GPS and visa-versa. I dont want to sit in the boat all day and add co-ordinates via the gps and was told that there was a program that I could get off the net that could be used on PC to do this. Any help appreciated.

Quobba / Red Bluff advice
Submitted by ChrisG on Sat, 2011-12-31 10:59Gents,
Heading up the coast again - been years since I visited the quobba coast and last time, in 2002, I fished Gnaraloo by boat with a little bit of beach work, now to try my new love/interest - High Speed Spin & Ballooning.....
Im booked into Red Bluff late Jan for 4 days and am planning to take only limited gear: prob just taking three rods and reels: a high speed spin outfit (with a cliff gaff and some metelsl/high speed hard bodies ie Halco Max's etc); a beach beach/bottom bouncing/bait outfit; and finally, a baitcasting combo.......
I'll be using this first visit to Quobba/Red bluff in Jan as a scouting exercise mainly for my 'proper' trip with the boys in late march, for which I'll be taking a ballooning outfit as well, plus freezers and range of gear that only makes it on a blokes only trip such as harnesses and lots of cold grog. On this second trip I'm booked into Quobba h/stead and we're taking a small tinny as well.
Is anyone able to offer me some advice: differant locations for spinning/ballooning/beach/etc; also accessability and any spots that are more dangerous than others (especially for this first trip whilst on my own)?
Heard of Camp Rock, Garths, Red bluff, The Caves, 2 mile and 17 miles and that they are 'good' but dont really know much about these spots specifically - other than knowing the name of the spots....
Anyway Gents any advice would be great?
What are late Jan and Late March like up there for fishing results and accessability to spots?
Also Gents, When I take gas up there in March, any advice on gas bottle size and how to tie the balloon to the line (i know the general rig but was wondering how to tie the balloon on ie knot or elastic band etc?)? And, how close can you get your 4WD vehicle to the main ballooning spots (wondering how far i'll need to carry the gas bottle, or how far to walk back to fill each balloon etc)? (Figure i could also tie off my harness and rope to the car whilst gaffing, having done that at steep before - thoughts?)
Thanks crew.
Cheers,
Chris

Hopetoun Report
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sat, 2011-12-31 09:24Not as interesting as some recent reports. WOW some of you guys are nailing it.
I spent the week camping at Mason's Bay some 30kms east of Hopetoun. The camping facilities there are excellent if you can find a spot. The camp is in a bay surrounded by reef. Further down the beach to the east the reef gives way to open ocean and there are some fantastic gutters down there with 5-10kms of accessible beach. High tide however makes it tricky to return but there are tracks back out to the raod.
Unfortunatly the open beaches were unfishable the first 3 days due to roaring SE winds. I did manage a few sessions but only caught large Trumpeters and crabs. I woke yesterday early and a thunder storm was brewing. Headed down the coast and the water was like glass with hundreds of Dolphins playing and feeding. I managed 30mins of fishing before lightening started striking overhead and it pissed down with rain. I will abondon my graphite sticks in those conditions LOL.
A few more Trumpeter and crabs before I headed back west to try the reefs. Not a lot happening there either and the rain came in again so back for a cooked breckie and then home.
The water temp down there is about 21 degrees and I think that is about 3 degrees too warm so it needs to cool down. Regardless I was able to suss this place out so I know what to expect next time. For those who enjoy camping and a civilised way (no getto balsters or rowdy parties) I would highly recommend this spot. My gutt feel is that there are many chances of big sharks and Mulloway down there given the right conditions.
I have pics but no fishie ones. I'll put them up in Picaso later.

Fads
Submitted by james14 on Fri, 2011-12-30 16:24G'day guys.
I have been watching a few FWA DVDs lately and seen them out on the FADS all by themselves.
Now I don't have a boat big enough to reach the fads but I'm interested as to what happens when there is multiple
Boats out there trolling.
Do the fish hang away from the fads giving more room to troll or are the quiet close to the fad.
Is there problems with say 5 boats trolling around the one fad?
Thanks James

Was awesome to see, right up there with seeing a whale shark.

4x4s on City Beach tonight
Submitted by SHizz on Thu, 2011-12-29 22:06Went for a beach sesh tonight with some mates. We were fishing south of city beach between there and swanny drain. We walked down as did every other angler there..or so I thought. After sunset 3 seperate fourbys come fanging past in convoy and clearly did not look like rangers or anyone of authority. One ute was stickered from head to tow in Fishing brands.
The beach was packed around the drain and these knobs drove past with out a care in the world, not slowing down. They must have got access through the gate at city beach as the rangers are away. When I left they had set up for the night about a K past the drain.
Not trying to sound like a nanna but its a bit of a joke. Driving at full pelt on a beach full of holiday fisho's after sunset? Real smart.

Worms in Fish
Submitted by aalfred on Thu, 2011-12-29 21:34Hey Crew,
I went out today and we managed to get some Tuna, Sambo and Breacksea Cod. After we got home I filleted the Tuna and I discovered worms in both Tunas. And there where caught in different areas, one near Rotto and one close to Mindarie.
I know that Sambos can have worms

but I never heard from Tuna. Can these worms be in all fish? And I know some ppl cut parts out and eat the rest. What is your opinion to that? Thanks for any input.
And I must say as well how good was the water!!!!!
Cheers Seb

i got done again!!!!
Submitted by fisho-ron on Thu, 2011-12-29 17:54well,
took my son troy out with me again today,(i should know better by now) and he kicked my but again.
i got busted off by something big, was calling it for a big dhu until half way up and then gone... i was pissed!!
then me and troy got busted of again by 2 heavy fish while we had a double hook up, lost both of them not far off the bottom.
between us we ended up with,
9 dhu's, 3 over size the largest 86cm, all but 2 released well with no weight.
1 small pinky
2 med size sambo's
1/2 dozen b/ass
lots of swallow tail
1 big nannyguy/red snapper? plus lots of small ones
them bloody sea sweep again( i am a expert at getting them)
and a wrasse for the comp!!
of course the big dhu's went to troy again, with myself not even getting a size one, we only kept the 2 dhuy's, nanny
and the biggest b/ass which i give to my cousun.
all in all was a great day on the water for us again with some good fish boated and one day i will catch a bigger fish than troy...lol
cheers ron

any luck in todays southerly drift??
Submitted by grayzeee on Thu, 2011-12-29 17:25We did it tough today , but i guess it was expected.
Headed out from mindarie early , though problems with the fuses on the sounder held us up for 20 mins.
All the way out to d bank to a certain ledge , only to find someone sat over the exact spot. only boat in sight. Thats the second time thats happened now.
Got straight into a sambo and a 55cm dhu early. both returned.
Things went quiet then , so we headed out deeper to the 90's with the trolling gear out , but found no good looking spots , so headed back inwards.
Checking lots of old waypoints as we zig zagged back homeward.
Threw everything at them today , jigs , plastics , driftbaits , livebaits , bottom bounced even.
picked up a couple of smallish 45cm baldies , 4 or 5 more smallish dhueys but nothing quality. bait won today.
fantastic conditions though , 28 knots on the run in , and it cooled off a bit even.
