Fun with Redfin
Submitted by HondaHoncho on Sun, 2019-10-13 15:03I recently coached my cousin's grandkids in the fine art of lure fishing a swirling farm creek for Redfin Perch. Winter rain in the Bridgetown area meant this little creek was discoloured and I wondered if the lures and spinners I'd selected might not even be visible... . Needn't have worried. Just before dusk we enjoyed repeated hits and had ten Redfin on the bank before dark. Most successful patterns were Mepps, Gibbs, Blue Fox, Vibrax and Tiger Tails, with red hints and rainbow trout colouration the most successful colours.* The most popular lure had a tuft of dark red feathers on the treble. At times, there was a frenzy of hits... and yes, we lost a few lures to snags.
Eighty percent of the fish were very healthy females loaded with eggs.
Did the kids have fun? You bet. The family had known for years that this little creek sheltered Redfin, but these were apparently the first caught. Pretty excited about their adventure, both boys went out first thing the next morning and caught another good-sized reddie. Late afternoons may produce more fish... .
* Quite a few of these lures had been successful with Rainbows, Dolly Varden, and Cutthroat in Vancouver Island streams and lakes. Next time I visit Bridgetown I'll try some wet flies with red hints against these voracious predators!~

Another bag out after the storm.
Submitted by still trying on Sun, 2019-10-06 12:01 Went out this morning at gentleman's hours with the misses today to check the pots. I was pretty confident of doing well after the storm and we got our 16. 1 of pots had donuts but the bait was demolished I think Mr occy had scared them all out of there.

Dhu Drought Over
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2019-09-30 19:37Set myself for a couple of days out this weekend and took the family to the whiting patch yesterday and pulled in a bunch of fat sandies. I reckon I caught 13 of the 16 and the kids need to pick their game up
.
Left the boat hooked up and set out solo after my fishing mad 9y old pulled out because "we probably won't catch anything". I've been in a dhu drought since last year and have only managed mostly Blackarse and a baldie.
Hit my spot in the 30s and four drifts for not even a bite and I was already accepting defeat but I changed the driftline and pulled up two small dhus and after a few more drifts and the most subtle of bites I sunk the hooks and got that telltale fight and pulled up a nice 60cm model. Next drift I hooked into something a lot more solid and was wishing I had my son with his $15 licence on board but he sliced me off ready for another day.

PB Dhu and plenty of pinks
Submitted by beau on Thu, 2019-09-12 19:28Havent posted in a while, have had trouble to on the computer with some out of date software, but all up to date now.
Had some great pinky fishing in recent times with some great numbers hitting the deck, even having 25 fish coming aboard in 2 sessions. Average size of about mid 80s and an equal PB of 94cm coming in at 11.6kg.
On the weekend headed out for a sambo jig on a spot that usually holds large numbers of big fish this time of year. Unfortunately was very quiet with only a small patch of fish holding off the lump and not interested in touching any jigs and plastics. I never head out there targeting sambos without grabbing a handful of livies on the way out because believe it or not they can be a tempermental bugger. So off with the plastics and replaced with a live herring pinned through the back on a jighead. We pulled hooks a few times due to the lazy rig, i usually like a snell setup with a large running ball sinker, but finally set the hook into a solid fish. Very average fight, couldnt decide whether it was a dhuie or a small sambo, then up popped this fatty.
New PB of 94cm.
Dont ever think your bait could be too big...
Quick call to fellow member Goodz to see if he was interested in popping in on his way home from work and taking this fish home, as long as he brought the head back the next day for my Dads soup!
We had one more drift and finally picked up what we came for, snaffling quite a large live skippy.
Cheers,
Beau.

No Boat No Worries
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2019-08-30 10:23Conditions are dreadful down here but my son is dead keen so I took him for a flick off the Old Dunno ramp rocks with 1m waves breaking across the bay. I wouldn't even attempt to head out to the weed banks at the moment.
He felt a nibble then the bream rod bent over and after a few tense moments with the breaking waves he landed this beauty. Another species off his bucket list.

So much for snapper size small
Submitted by little johnny on Fri, 2019-08-23 20:17Last few days guys I know been getting 850 to 985 long pinks. I personally won’t chase them this year . But makes me wonder about results . And where they get them from. I do understand bringing ban forward. And agree . Extended area wrong .There already in numbers and spraying as you lift tthem. Tagging should be stopped also . Why upset them while doing there natural breeding cycle . Leave them . Not many hand in tags anyway.. plus heaps get lost to sharks. Just my thoughts

Daddy Daughter Date
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sat, 2019-08-10 07:02I had Friday off and had missy for the day while the boys were at school. Asked her what she wanted to do e xpecting the usual play centre and she says "go fishing". I've had the kids on my RDO since they were babies 9.5yrs ago and this was the first time I'd been out on the boat on my RDO.
A quick pack and we were in the water by 10:30. Shot over to Little Island to see the seals and sat inside the reef watching a bunch of mad bastards surfing then shot through a gap and out to the whiting patch.
The whiting were like rats and first drop missy is on straight away. A lesson in frustration is watching a 4y old wind a whiting up 23m with a tiny combo! The next few drops I reeled hers up to within 5m and after 6 she was tuckered out and slept in the cuddy cab while I enjoyed the glassy conditions and double headers.

exmouth fishing
Submitted by Saulty2 on Tue, 2019-08-06 06:56Hi all heading up to exmouth this w/end for 3 weeks just after some info on charters and or do i bring my deep drop fishing gear P.M me if anyone is there with a boat that would like to catch up .
Aron with a HUGE!! Dhufish off the rocks.
Submitted by Chris fish on Sun, 2019-08-04 09:05Haven’t been on here much but have to share this one...
My brother Aron ticked off possibly the best landbased capture of the century haha.
103cm Dhufish off the rocks on a Mackbait vibed along the bottom from the south coast rocks. Landed on 50lb gear as well. Absolute fish of a lifetime and the biggest I’ve ever heard of on lure from the rocks and one of 4 I’ve seen a picture or head rumors of at that size from land.
So so happy for him and it couldn’t have been caught by a more deserving guy.

Big KGW
Submitted by kirky79 on Thu, 2019-06-20 10:09
Hey guys, got out for a fish yesterday. Started off well with a nice little 4kg Dhu on the very first drift. Then things went pretty quiet. ENE was blowing but the current was really moving, we were drifting at around 1.3 knots. Brother in law picked up this stonker KG. Went 56 cm, sorry about the photo, I had already taken the fillet off when I remembered to get a measurement. Weighed around 1.2 kg
