Brag Board
Land based Sambo
Submitted by Noxious on Sat, 2015-04-11 10:15Interesting catch - went down to the mole last night to chase some mulloway along with 500 other anglers. Saw one get caught by the group next to us, a decent fish of about 1m. Heaps of other mulloway and pink snapper landed over the night. Then at about 1am my two mates who I was fishing with decided to walk a couple hundred meters up to the tip to see what was going on up there. 2 minutes later, one of our 6 set baits goes off, I scrambled to get to the rod before the reel got spooled. Got there and it was on, big thumping runs, rod bouncing all over the place - a real battle, and I was on my own! The fish ran straight right down the groin straight into our other rods, making a huge tangle, after a spirited battle I got the monster to the rocks and managed to catch my breath and get my phone out of my pocket and call my mates, luckily they weren't far away. Pretty disappointed to see this big dirty Sambo surface! not a mulloway! but a good fish off the stones none the less. Not sure how big it was but estimated at 20kg +
The fish got smashed up on the rocks quite badly, and it was decided to keep the fish for a friend who doesn't mind eating questionable fish. Ended up giving the Sambo to some young guys who were over the moon to take the fish.
No Mulloway and Pink snapper... But a Landbased Sambo that will probably never be beat.

Good Friday Bash
Submitted by Noxious on Sat, 2015-04-04 13:54Hi
Me and two mates headed out on good friday for a bash 'west of rotto'. Started a little slow, ended up with a decent mixed bag of demersals. Dhu wasn't the greatest at 60cm, but eyes popping and guts hanging out decided to keep her everything else was a good size, including; two very nice baldies and a good 50cm off shore KGW! even one of the black ass was a horse as far as black ass go.
All in all a good day on the water resulting in a tasty mixed bag!

Abrolhos 2015 Picture Report
Submitted by beau on Thu, 2015-04-02 15:08Just got back from another epic trip to Abrolhos Islands with Saltwater Charters. Great weather and fishing as usual, lots of fish falling to jigs with Jigging Sports Australia assists, plastics and pelagics on stickbaits. Massive thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for going out of their way to helping me out before the trip, cant reccomend these guys enough, well worth the 45min+ drive for me to get there. Big ups to Craig and deckie Josh for making it a great experience as always.
Heres a few photos from the trip..
Thanks for reading guys,
Beau.

Thanks to Wayne(Fish 06) for a top day out of Mindarie yesterday
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Sat, 2015-03-28 07:53I went out with Wayne yesterday from 7-3 out of Mindarie for a fish after calling a couple of trips off due to the weather. After the storms on Thurs night I woke up to clear conditions and made my way north to Mindarie to meet up at the ramp. We headed out to Waynes spot and started off the drifts in some pretty good conditions. We picked up a couple of sgt bakers and wrasse etc so we moved spots slightly further south after seeing a craypot in the middle of some pretty flat hard ground with some fish shows on his furuno 585. Started the drift again and it wasnt long before Wayne hooked up properly and up came a nice dhuie. Only a few minutes after that I got a good hit and was on also, another dhuie just slightly smaller.
We moved spots again out to another 10 mts deeper to try for some other demersal species and I downgraded hooks in hope of a baldie or kgw. After a while I got a fox fish and a fair bit later Wayne got another Fox Fish which was the biggest he and I had ever seen. I switched over to my 20lbs outfit which turned out to be a good move as I got an undersized dhuie which was released in good health as I had brought it up nice and slow on the smaller gear. We moved inshore for a final go at KGW but it was not to be with just some more butterfish coming up before heading back to the ramp for 3pm.
Dhuies were estimated at 10 + 8kg. I got about six bags of four decent portions + wings from the smaller dhuie, I gave the head and frame to my neighbour for his wife to cook fish head curry and scaled/gutted the foxfish to have whole one night.
Bloody nice day out on the water, cheers for having me along.

Fridays catch - Baldys
Submitted by flexn on Mon, 2015-03-16 10:40Went out friday from woodies around 9am, glass all day with no wind. Pretty slow day, weather was a bit weird and overcast. Started slow with a few black ass being returned here and there. I was jigging, girlfriend was using bait. Double hook up, she hooked a black ass, I hooked up to what I called as a nice size dhu, her line got tangled on mine and lost it not far from the boat. Nothing else on jig after that, so switched to bait.
She caught a baldy 50cm, few more drifts and moved spots. Found some new ground, lots showing on the sounder but couldn't tempt anything. Decided one more drift, then pulled up another nice baldy and headed home. Went 70cm and 6.2kg.

Mahi Mahi Time
Submitted by Noxious on Mon, 2015-03-09 07:39Hi
Went out yesterday for a bash near Rottnest. At about 11am a big school (estimated 30-40 fish) of Mahi Mahi swan under our boat, which looked amazing! The three of us all dragged a lure (all diving lures) right passed their noses but they wouldn't touch. We decided to go for a troll after this to see what we could pul up as their was a fair bit of bird action, they were all dispersed over a relatively large area so it was difficult to decide where to actually troll. The boys persisted with their divers, I thought I'd change it up, as I had already seen the disinterest from the fish to this type of lure. I went a little skirted lure and whacked it right in the prop wash. I was rewarded with my first Metro Mahi Mahi! and noweher near the FADS! The boys also caught a couple SBT at the same time - these SBT were much smaller than last week probably only 1kg little jelly beans. The Mahi Mahi wasn't a beast by any means, but I was wrapped none the less.
My mate Brad also pulled up a nice Baldy - best one I've seen in a while.
We also managed a Dhuey in the 50's and a decent Queeny. All in all a good bag.
HEAPS of pelagic action out there at the moment. We saw birds doing their thing all day. Also saw about another 3 or 4 bust ups on the way in, including one just outside the islands that looked like it was made up of much larger Tuna (we had enough by this stage so left them alone). Also saw good showings of bait on the sounder. The ride back in was less than ideal, with the swell really picking up.
Had some fuel issues (new boat 3rd time out) yesterday, namely running out of it - turns out the fuel tank is smaller than the previous owner told us 100l (rather than 120l), the fuel gauge is nowhere near accurate and the engine doesn't quite 'run off the smell of the oily rag'. Luckily we were were close to the ramp and sea rescue gave us a tow back in! Learnt a few very valuable mistakes/lessons. Never trust what people are telling you when buying a boat - check everything yourself. Luckily we were two seconds from the ramp and not behind rottnest in pumping swell!
All in all a good day - have to take the positives from the boat issues - learn those lessons and move on.
Alex

Black bream sesh
Submitted by Timwoody86 on Sun, 2015-03-08 22:36Went down to my secret bream spot in the Murray last night to try upgrade my pb. Everything was looking good high tide dark full moon and heaps of bait in the water. Set up and within a 15 mins the drag went skitso. I thought I was onto another horse of a black bream but after a swim to pull the big girl out of the snags and another 5 mins it finally kick the bucket. It went 900mm. After that I got broken off twice and manage a 550mm and a coulple nice bream 42 and 44. Great feed of fish had the bream in bread crumbs shallow fried in butter with mash and veggies.

First contest win!!
Submitted by Rob H on Sun, 2015-03-08 22:36yesterday I won a fishing contest.
At least the visitor category of the MAAC monthly
By catching a harlequin, gardies, herring, whiting and flounder.
Using a Stella 20000 and Monster Mesh borrowed from the captain
Unfortunately there was no category for the Harlequin, the gardy missed by 9 grams and the herring missed the weigh in as it was stuck in the hessian bag and didnt notice til too late
The rest of the fish were caught by some other blokes but I cant remember their names except they made nice sandwiches and had a nice boat
First contest Ive ever been in, like shooting fish in a barrel (sort of)

take a fisherman fishing, you get fish
Submitted by Deleted on Sun, 2015-03-08 20:48well finally my mate (dicko) and I have aligned the planets to get a fish in together. dicko tends to favour the week days due to family and the availabilty of free dive buddies/FIFO.
we made the decision to take my boat so the master (dicko) could look over me and my sounder great decision (later regret bloody wind)
the morning started on a ordinary showing on sounder with no results (basicly a practice run as we never fished my boat before)
as planned we headed out towards a spot we had fished many years before on a previous boat, battled the wind thinking it would only improve .
approaching the area we had fished all those years ago i decided to move slightly south to find the honey hole of all holes, i had set the drift thinking it will be just a single slide by, oh wow did that change.
of the drifts we did (not many), we managed 5 sized dhu's smallest of 580mm including double hook up. 2 were kept 820mm and 850mm 8kg and 10kg (dicko released one bigger). 3 baldies 2 sized but decided only one would be kept.
all of this happened in 1.5 hours on jigs and plastics (more so jigs).
it was worth the 3.50am wake up, what wasn't worth the wake up was the early sea breeze and the smash home.
all i can say is take a fisherman (bloke who knows whats going on) fishing and you'll find it not only easy but a winner cheers dicko your a champ.....
