Brag Board
Monte's Sept '13
Submitted by Camo.W on Mon, 2013-09-23 15:31Got back last week from a trip from Exmouth to the Monte's and back on Top Gun 2. My brother books the boat out every year for the past 4 and this was my second trip, and what a trip it was with so may PB's and first time captures it was amazing.
4 of us fished nothing but artificials for the trip, between Ockta jigs, Knifes and soft plastics, with the Ockta's out fishing everything about 5 to 1 including the bait.
My most memorable captures would be the double header 77cm trout (new PB) with a 22kg Malabar cod on ockta jig, my sailfish, 17kg Mackie (new PB, heaps of GT's on jig and 10 trout all on jigs.
Anyhow here's some pics for your viewing pleasure.

My first ever GT!!
Submitted by catch.fish on Mon, 2013-09-23 11:56Just got back from an awesome week fishing and diving at the Montebello Islands! Will do up a full report with pics and some vids later but thought I would just quickly share a quick pic of my first ever GT as it was a pretty special catch for me!
I spent days throwing big poppers around on the heavy gear till my arms felt like they where going to drop off hoping for a big GT. Got a few good follows and one good hookup that was quickly reefed and lost. A couple of the other guys got onto some smaller model GT's but despite putting in the effort it just didn't look like it was gonna be my time...
We headed back to the anchorage and decided to put out a little bait on some lighter gear to grab a spango or trout for dinner before the sun went down. We used a small circle hook with a little strip of bonito on a Stradic 8k on a Terez rod.
Suddenly the rod buckled over and line started screaming off the reel, I picked it up and held on! Initial calls where shark or some sort of big cod / grouper as I could feel big tail thumps through the rod and was barely able to slow it down. Whatever it was, I knew I was definitely a bit under gunned on the lighter gear!
After a solid half hour of climbing and scrambling all over the boat doing my best to keep it out of the reef and away from the anchor rope we finally got some colour and up came a big G! We couldnt believe it!!
Snapped a couple of quick pics and sent him back just as the sun was setting. Couldn't have scripted it better!!
Was an amazing trip, stay tuned for full report soon!! :)

Tidal surge Leeman
Submitted by roberta on Thu, 2013-09-19 12:16Hi FW'ers,
Glad not retreiving the boat today. Went down to the foreshore next to the Crayfishermans jetty and you should see the surge. They are coming in thick and fast. The surge is incredible, haven't seen it like that since the Arche earthquake. Plus high tide. The waves are hitting the reefs further out. Must be big swells further out.
No professionals out today, wonder why hahahah. Filthy water in close and you guessed it ruddy seaweed everywhere, gggrrrr. But its a beautiful day here 21c, sunny and hardly any wind.
Tight lines people.

Barcrusher 670C test drive
Submitted by Riles on Fri, 2013-09-13 14:25Yesterday I decided with my mate Nick to take out the barcrusher for the first time since purchasing it to have a play with the sounder and other equipment. I couldn't be happier with how it went except for a faulty deckwash pump. The sounder worked great and the fishing was even better. We caught two 7kg and five 4kg Snapper and was back at the boat ramp by 8.
COuldnt think of a better way to christen the new boat. Cant wait to get out again soon

Stonker Dhu and a Goodz day out!
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2013-09-10 12:05The plan for Sunday was to head out for a couple hours on sunset to try our luck at the pinkies but by mid-morning we realised the weather was just too nice so we decided to put the boat in at midday and head out to the 40s out from Rockingham. Second drift Ben hooks up solid on the jig and after a 5-10 minute tussle up pops this stonker 16kg dhuie!
I also managed a couple sambos on jig before heading back home.
Goodz joined Ben and I yesterday and we were on the water just after 5am. We tried a spot on ffb that Albee Mangles had given us the day before where he has been having some good sessions lately. I kicked it off with a mid 50s pinkie right on sunset, then Goodz landed a tiny pup Dhu on plastic, then a double hook up on pigeon pair 60cm Dhus in the burley trail.
Goodz was having some fun on the light gear on the skippy in the burley trail and I dispatched another mid 50s pinkie to the eski. I also hooked one of the big sambos that were hanging around the burley trail which bricked me pretty quick on the 15lb gear. Ben was killing it on a small Caprice kid jig under the boat landing a nice Harly and something else that kept us guessing for a while and couldnt believe it when it popped up! Gotta love the coulours on both fish.
Called it a morning after I pulled up a huge black ray so we rigged up for the 40s and upped anchor. It was pretty quiet demersal-wise out in the 40s, bar one blackass but we did have some fun on the sambos! Goodz was showing us jigging newbies how it was done!
I also boated a couple, finally got to put a solid bend in my new Temple Reef/Saltiga PE6 combo!
Goodz then finished the day off with another nice fish.
Ended up with a nice bag, all of it except the BA from five fathom bank which was interesting, couldve bagged out on demersals in the first few hours if our plan was just to stay in close. Very nice day out in good company, looking forward to the next trip out Goodz and some stonker Dhus to hit the deck!

Shark Bay report June 2013 (Pictures Fixed!)
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2013-09-03 09:46
Well I was going to wait until I edited a video before I posted a report but Ive got over an hour of footage to cut down to a clip and really cant be bothered at the moment. Please bear with me as this is the second time Ive written out this report, the computer froze on me last night about 3 quarters through so I might come across a bit short or photos arent in chronological order so please no sooking! This was our first "North Trip" in our own boat for part-owner Ben and I. We headed up with Bens partners family who had been making the trip to Denham for many years now, fishing out of one hell of a boat.. The 8m+ Black Hawk and our lil 4.8m runabout...
First day out was a pearler, weather-wise and fishing. Bens partner Allie joined us as she would for most days of the trip. Launched out of Denham and the Black Hawk showed us some of their favourite spots that they had found over the years. First spot was loaded with undersized blacks and pinks, with heaps of school macks buzzing around the boat following every fish we brought up. We fished pretty light, mostly 10-20lb and a mix of Zmans and baits. Our favourite little spot was a long reef in about 7m, we did pretty well drifting the back edge of it. We eventually found some nice fish and ended up with a nice bag between the three of us..
The rest of the days we headed out pretty early, applying tactics we use around Perth and try target the bigger pinks early in the morning. The other crew were happy sleeping in and cooking breaky before heading out, after-all, we were supposed to be on holiday..
The juvi pinks were so thick I even hooked one using a bit of my sandwich on a jighead, I was on to a fish before I had even flicked the bail arm over.
Couple nights we headed down to the jetty to try our luck at catching some bait. Managed a couple squid and some stonker snook which turned out to make real good bait for the pinkies.
One arvo we headed over to the Monkey Mia side for something a bit different. Big thanks to Randal who shared some info on the area. We ended up drifting along a current line where the pinkies were going nuts. Allie also managed a nice cod that was released to the eski.
On the way back to the ramp we found the dolphins to be pretty playful..
The next day all the boys and Allie jumped onto the Black Hawk for a trip out of Dirk Hartog. It was rough. I spewed. Alot. Allie lasted one drop before resorting back to the comfiness of the passenger seat, the Kwells really knocked her out. Luckily for me the Allens Snakes tasted just as good coming up as they did going down. Green spew, purple spew, all-kinds-of-colours spew. The fish were biting so we stuck it out..
Well our last day of fishing had arrived, it was pretty blowy in the morning so we opted for an arvo session instead. We stopped at Bent Pin as one of the other boats had been doin really well in the late arvo for good size pinks. I hooked a monster. Every time I got it off the bottom it would slowly start cruising down with the current. After a 15-20min battle I locked up the drag on my lil Shimano 2500 and dragged her up. Unbelievable.
My most embarassing and memorable moment of the trip haha! We headed back to our lil reef in 7m and dropped the anchor and cubed up. It didnt take long for the pinkies to arrive, they were everywhere, even boofing burley on the surface at the back of the boat. I landed the biggest Pinkie we got for the trip on jig, 2cms over the max limit of 70cm for the bay so back she went. Also got my first lil mulla too..
At the pub that night we decided with the fishing being so good and the forecast for the following day being the best day so far it was a no-brainer that we were going to stay one more day. The call was to head out behind Dirk Hartog again. We loaded our boat with extra fuel and the long trip began out to Steep. The 2 big boats headed back out to 80m while we stayed in close to the cliffs to see if we could have some fun on tuna and get Ben his first Spaniard. We rounded the southern end of Dirk and tuna were jumping everywhere you looked, we had never seen anything like it. The urge to just drift and throw stickbaits was immense but we wanted to get some mackies in the catch bag first. Morning started well with a shark mack to Ben and I landed a cheeky one on stickbait while he got his gear ready again.
Well when we started trolling again and the plastic rod holder snapped when a fish hit Bens lure we knew we were onto something quite large! I scrambled to get the rest of the lures in and give chase in the boat, as the last two shark macks were both obliterated by packs of sharks after release!
We couldnt believe what popped up!
The mackie went a touch over 1.5m and didnt quite fit in our catch bag! The rest of the day we had a ball drifting and trolling up and down the cliffs, catching plenty of cobia on jigs and stickbaits, tuna, spaniards, a couple untoppables on jigs, baracouda, even had a wahoo bigger than Bens mackie buzz the boat for a couple minutes but we couldnt entice him to take anything, and a shark that thought it would be a great idea to eat our prop!
Really looking forward to doing it all again next year, maybe even in a new boat ;)
Thanks for reading guys. Beau

Fathers Day Flick'n
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2013-09-02 16:15Yesterday, I spent the afternoon chasing a few sooty grunter in the freshwater reaches of the Pioneer River in my kayak. I am yet to find a more relaxing way to spend a few hours than gracefully kayaking around the many pools and expanses of riffle habitat in my little “glide”, and casting at likely sooty haunts.
We only ended up with 3 little sootys in total but there will be plenty more around in the upcoming weeks as the water quickly warms up.

Thumping King George
Submitted by Lowza on Sat, 2013-08-31 05:05First forum post!
Caught this King George Whiting at the back of Garden Island couple of weeks ago in around 20m of water on size 10 Long Shank hook with some peeled prawn! on my Okuma 3000 Trio with 1-3kg Tairyo Spin Stick.
Was chasing the usual feed of good size sand whiting when this thumper slammed the bait. The length came in at 71cm didn't get a weight on him....
Plenty of Sand whiting after him and 2 Reasonable skippy at 50cm a piece.
Let me know your thoughts.

Having a "whale" of a time
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2013-08-29 10:49Probably not so relevant for you guys over there in WA but thought you might enjoy the photos none-the-less
I could not pass up the opportunity to share some of these awesome photos of the whales breaching and frolicking a short distance from Mackay harbour last weekend. There are 2 main reasons for this and the first one is because I think these pics are amazing and would be of interest to many people considering not everyone gets the chance to see these majestic creatures. Secondly, to make fisho’s and boaties aware that these things are out in large numbers at the moment and to be extremely careful when venturing out to sea, especially during low light periods.
Humpback whales make their annual migration from Antarctica to the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef marine park between May and September each year. They do this in order to court, mate, give birth or rear their calves.
These pictures exhibit the standard tail extensions, flippering and breaching behaviour.
There are a bunch of do’s and don’ts when it comes to boating near whales so if you need to be informed, please check the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authoritys website. Some very basic ones include not being allowed to motor within 100m of a whale (unless it comes up to you when stationary) and only 3 boats are allowed to be in the caution zone which is between 100m-300m from the whale. These images were all taken whilst in the caution zone and look closer due to the utilisation of a large zoom lens on the SLR.

Possible Joke of the Year.
Submitted by Stoinka on Wed, 2013-08-28 09:19The Sensitive Man A woman meets a man in a bar. They talk; they connect; they end up leaving together. They get back to his place, and as he shows her around his apartment, she notices that one wall of his bedroom is completely filled with soft, sweet, cuddly teddy bears.
There are three shelves in the bedroom, with hundreds and hundreds of cute, cuddly teddy bears carefully placed in rows, covering the entire wall! It was obvious that he had taken quite some time to lovingly arrange them and she was immediately touched by the amount of thought he had put into organizing the display. There were small bears all along the bottom shelf, medium-sized bears covering the length of the middle shelf, and huge, enormous bears running all the way along the top shelf.
She found it strange for an obviously masculine guy to have such a large collection of Teddy Bears, She is quite impressed by his sensitive side. but doesn't mention this to him. They share a bottle of wine and continue talking and, after awhile, she finds herself thinking, 'Oh my God! Maybe, this guy could be the one! Maybe he could be the future father of my children?'
She turns to him and kisses him lightly on the lips He responds warmly. They continue to kiss, the passion builds, and he romantically lifts her in his arms and carries her into his bedroom where they rip off each other's clothes and make hot, steamy love. She is so overwhelmed that she responds with more passion, more creativity, more heat than she has ever known.
After an intense, explosive night of raw passion with this sensitive guy, they are lying there together in the afterglow. The woman rolls over, gently strokes his chest and asks coyly, 'Well, how was it?' The guy gently smiles at her, strokes her cheek, looks deeply into her eyes, and says: 'Help yourself to any prize from the middle shelf'

Caught some fish last week
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2013-08-27 16:28Just posting some photos from a couple outings last week. Only had one day off taking the boat out the whole week the weather was so good. Been teaming up with fellow member hoookt to smash the pinkies at a spot we found a couple weeks ago when I deckied for him. Had a frantic session one evening that saw my brother and I land 9 or 10 snapper in 20mins as the sun set. Plastics were getting smashed literally seconds after hitting the water the pinkies were so high up the burley trail. Couple small dhus we got on plastics as a bycatch for snapper one morning was good fun. Skippy are crazy in the sound at the moment the pinkies would be feeding well. Headed out to 40m in that great weather we had Saturday which saw my brother get his pb dhu and 2 stonker sambos on 30lb while dad and I spent the arvo rigging up after getting smashed every drift using 50lb...
You'll be happy to know I'm back to work now at a shutdown after 7 weeks off but I'll be straight back into fishing mode next week :)
