Why is one engine using more than 50% more fuel?
Submitted by Escape on Mon, 2012-03-19 11:32Any advice appreciated on this.
Boat is 32Ft Penguin (see picture) twin newly reconditioned crate 350 chev vortec motors. Both motors have new HEI distributors ( motors just completed 20 hours) with 650 holleys, shaft drive and new props. Very heavy boat at 8t and then some but this is the bit that worries me. Recently headed out about 25 km plus drifting plus trying a few spots for about 4 hours in calm seas most of the work done at about 3100 - 3200rpm where the boat sits nicely on plane. Always conscious of keeping both engines the same rpm.
Filled it up after the trip as follows:
Starboard motor tank took 81.25 litres
Port motor tank took 149.05 litres !!!
As far as I can tell there are no leaks, both motors sitting at temp and staying there with equal oil pressures. Motors both fire up at first kick every time and sound the same when turning over.
I do catch the smell of fuel every now and then when the boat s going but not much from up the top.
Where do I start:
Float levels, timing, it's a huge difference. I would be ok with the 80 litre top up for each motor.
Appreciate you help or suggestions with this.
Cheers

Prop for etec
Submitted by mig250c on Thu, 2012-03-15 21:57Gday to all.
I have a plate ali 5.5m boat with an evinrude etec 115 hp with v6 gearcase. The boat has 5mm bottom 4mm sides ect and weighs 1250kg lightly loaded. When we had the engine fitted it came with a BRP viper 14 3/4 x 17 s/s prop and wot was 5000 rpm @50 kph . Since then we have purchased another prop 14 1/2 x 15 also s/s from another company. This time we get 5400 rpm @50 kph on returning to the company to see what our next prop choice should be as the engine should rev to about 5750 rpm we were informed there was not much else. The company then suggested raising the outboard on the transom if the rpms increased come back and they would cup the prop. Have since lifted the engine but didnt gain any increase in engine revs . Has anyone got a similar set up with a 115hp etec 25 '' leg and if so.
Do you know .
1. How much your boat weighs.
2. wot rpm.
3.how fast does your boat go .
4.what prop do you have.

trim tabs for a 660
Submitted by scotto on Thu, 2012-03-15 09:14oi,
the old man wants trim tabs put on his 660 trailblazer.
does anyone know of any brands that need to be either avoided or recomended?
also, I was happy to fit them for him, but he'd prefer if it was done professionally, so am i right presuming that any marine mechanic will do them, and how much will it cost?
cheers

NMEA2000 Info
Submitted by jarrid on Wed, 2012-03-14 10:37Hi,
Have just got a new boat with a Honda 40hp outboard and I have a new HDS7. Both are NMEA 2000 compatible. The HDS has a simple cable in for the NMEA2k but the outboard looks a bit more difficult.
I would like to hook it up to see engine details on the screen and was wondering if anyone had any advice. Questions I have are:
- do I need to install sensors on the motor
- if so where can I get them
- what info can be pulled from the motor
- likewise, where can I get the cables to go to the HDS
- is it worth the hassle???
Any advice would be appreciated. The manual on the motor says "see your dealer". I am not very cluey with the wiring etc but have a mate who loves this kind of stuff.
Cheers

Motor Cavitation
Submitted by Aaron Santos on Mon, 2012-03-12 16:59Quick question.
I changed my prop about 12 months ago due to a spun prop bush. the bloke I bought the new prop off said it was exactly the same(pitch size) as the damaged one and to replace it was easy just do it up as tight as possible plus a little bit more. and obviously in the right order. ever since then I have been getting a bit of cavitation when taking off fast, turning sharp or just in everyday chop of the coast. its a 90hp johnson 2000 model ocean pro sits on roughly 24knots at just over 5000rpm. should i be getting more top end out of it and whats the best way to fix the cavitation, change the prop again or or put a cavitation plate on?
All advice apreciated.
Thanks

losing bearing buddies
Submitted by mako magic on Tue, 2012-03-06 10:09Recently changed all the bearing on the boat in prep for exmouth, so new bearing fitted packed etc, then cleaned out the bearing buddies packed and refitted them pumped with grease as to specs, only to find i keep losing the right side ones, never had this issue before, still have both left ones just the right side, placed a brand new set the other day which took alot of effort to bang on, only to again come off in the drive back from the ramp.
Anyone else have had this issue and or knows why and how to overcome, it will start to get costly replacing bearing buddies everytime i tow the tow :(

Collapsed fuel bulb
Submitted by mr_meks on Mon, 2012-03-05 14:24Had my motor cut out the other day, and when I felt the primer bulb it was collapsed like it was under vacuum. I disconnected the fuel line to the tank, heard air suck into the line then I reconnected and re primed then everything was OK again.
Does that sound like something was blocking the fuel pickup in the tank? or possibly something more sinister? Before going out that day I had an O-ring that was letting some fuel escape from where a plastic fuel rail inserts into to one of the carbs, but cleaned / lubed it up and it sealed fine. Could be related?

What can you get for $50,000
Submitted by mrwinta on Sat, 2012-03-03 05:24I am looking to buy a boat as the last one was shared with a mate who never used it so it had to go.
I want to get a boat I can reguarly dive and fish from, from Rocko to Rotto and the ocasional family trip as I have a two year old too. I have been looking at getting a Yalta Craft 2000 (formerly 555). They have a good reputation as far as ride in the chop, They are a budget boat but it seems great value for money and you can get a new one with a 115 yammie 4st for just over 50k. I need it to be reliable so I wanted a low hours 2-5 year old second hand boat or new as this is the main selling point to the wife!
Anyone got any sugestions as to what other boats I could be looking at..... 5.5-6.5 meter half cabin, 115-150 ish HP, good deck space for fishing and diving and a 150L fuel tank so I could reach the furthest FAD with out a worry.... and again a budget of upto 50k....
I was also hoping to get any feedback from any Yalta Craft owners on the site...
Your sugestions will be appriciated....- Cheers...

Submitted by Tankisnowfishing on Fri, 2012-03-02 11:01Hi Guys
Just on the off chance does anyone have a manual for a 1991 Evinrude Intruder - 150HP? either PDF, or hard copy? It is the loop chagred model if that makes sense to anyone.
OR know of any local Perth places that you can purchase.
And - any brand of service book better than the other? I know on the old car manuals the different by brand and some are better than others.
Any help appreciated.

HDS transducer opinions
Submitted by Brad Y on Tue, 2012-02-28 14:04Picking up a HDS 7 this weekend. While Im of the opinion (and so is the seller) that the 50/200 is going to be the transducer I want, can anyone tell me if it is THE choice in lowrance transducers for fishing 25-80m deep but also in the rivers and shallow bay stuff as well? Ive found CH Smith recommend the 83/200 for up to 100m which I may get out to up in exxy but not down here. Price isnt an issue (well to me it isnt, but the mrs will say otherwise)
Personal opinions and experiences welcome.
Cheers
