driving cats

I hear a lot about how you need to be able to drive a cat properly , before you'll get the best out of the hull , and how they can be dangerous if driven wrong , in quartering  seas and beam to.

So what exactly are you supposed to do? (and what shouldn't you do)

2010 YAMAHA F200AET ISSUES

Just curious if anyone else runs this engine and if you've had any issues with it thus far.

In the mount it states 60L F200AET but if you enter the serial on the Yamaha website it says its a 60L F200TXR. Can anyone explain this to me as i know virually zero about outboards. Thanks.

Major Fiberglass work

 Hi all,

Am thinking of getting some work done on the old girl (the boat that is! :)) over winter and am looking for someone reputable in boat building/glass work in the Perth area.

Primarily I am looking at getting the overall glass finish brought up to scratch, whoever did the last work on her wasn't that flash and there are numerous nicks and cracks/scratches etc

There has also been some serious modifications done to the rear of the boat before I bought it that I would like checked and redone, I'm not happy with the finish.

Am a big believer in the word of mouth referall system so if anyone knows anyone who does this sort of thing, please feel free to let me know, either here or PM is fine.

I can see this turning into a refurb project.....

 Cheers

Importing a boat from the US

Hi everyone

I'm looking at purchasing the Sea Hunt Victory 225.  Around $10k saving if imported from the US.

Has anyone any experience of this (or know anyone who has)?

Thanks so much....

New canopy

Finally bit the bullet and got a new canopy for the boat fabricated and covered. The old one was getting a bit long in the tooth and I was sick of cleaning the sunnies only to put them back on and cop another over spray in the face again. Plus I didn't have much in the way of keeping my rods off the deck whilst in transit to the next fishing spot so I wanted to sort that out too. I removed the old one and dropped it off to the welder on Monday. Picked it up today and put some lights on the bar work to give a bit of light for the night fishing. The auto trimmers did a nice job as I can zip off the clears and then I can zip off the main cover just to leave the frame work. I don't mind getting out in less than favourable conditions so hopefully it will be a good investment. Can't wait to get out for the next fish or dive.

Towing oversized US boats

Hi All,

I am looking at buying an american made boat in the 25ft to 27ft range and the boats I have been looking at all have the standard US beam width of 8'6" (2.59m) which makes them oversized for towing purposes (2.5m is the maximum width taken from here http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/LBU_VS-IB_107.pdf).  I was talking to a mate recently who has a boat with a 3m beam and he was telling me a bit about the oversized towing restrictions here in WA such as not being able to tow at night and this in particular has put me off as I like to get early starts.  I looked at going down in length but even most of the 21ft/22ft American boats still have the same beam, and so they should have the same problem but I have seen plenty of these big boats being towed around Perth with no oversized signs and I am sure a few were owned by Fishwrecked members or thier friends so I was wondering if you could give me your experiences with towing American boats in Australia (Like do main raods turn a blind eye to boats that are just over the 2.5m etc.)

Any help you can give me on this would be great and please feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Cheers

Toby

Tournament 2000 vs 2100

Tried this in another thread but no response.

Is the tournament 2100 the same basic design as the 2000 ?

They have the same dimensions and are the same price. Just the 2100'is a walk around.  I'm looking into newer bigger boat for out wide.

Besides this are there any other new boats with similar features and size for under $70k I should consider?

What does salt water do to carbies?

So we're out in the boat trolling around and the motor starts to splutter and dies fairly quickly. Attempts to restart produce a bit of a fire now and again but it refuses to spring to life. After a bit of head scratching, noticed that the fuel filler cap is open for some reason, and due to sloppy seas had probably taken in a fair bit of salt water. We took some fuel samples from the hoses just before the carbs and found what we're fairly sure was water in the fuel so set about bypassing the water separater/filter and flushing clean fuel through the lines and reattaching to the carbs. Was all in vain unfortunately because at the time I didnt know there were screws you can remove to drain the float bowls, so attempts to start failed and we ended up having to be towed a rather long way back to ramp (Thanks gero fisheries)

Another symptom was the primer bulb didn't want to pump hard, like there was a large leak in the system?

Anyway due to having to fly back to work for 2 weeks I've had to just leave the motor possibly with salt water sitting in the carbs/ god knows where else and was wondering what the consequences might be.  Its a 96 evinrude 115 ocean pro. ( VRO fuel/oil pump)

Should I be paying someone to go and look at it ASAP or what ?

Places for Honda servicing Perth

Hi guys,

Considering buying boat from dealer outside of Perth that comes with option of Honda or Evinrude outboard.

Thinking going Honda, but part of my decision comes down to having somewhere local in Perth for Honda servicing/warranty etc.

Just wondering if could get any recommendations for Honda servicing in Perth area.

I live south of the river, but can go north if necessary.

Cheers.

Northstar transducer

Hi Guys, great forum with loads of great info, only browsed so far but joined today.

I have a Northstar Explorer 660 combo plotter/sounder which was working fine up until a couple of weeks ago. The sounder has stopped working, I have checked the connections at the display unit. Is there anything else that can be done to troubleshoot before I try and hunt out a new transom transducer? I know Northstar no longer exists so may not be that easy to find a replacement.

Looks like I will need to replace the transducer but want to see if there is anything I should check first?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

restoring anodized aluminium t top etc

looking to do a bit of tlc on the boat, the aluminium T Top isnt in the greatest shape - has signs of salt damage, minor pitting etc, id like to try and give it a new lease of life although im of the understanding you cant polish anodized aluminium as it removes the anodising causing bigger corrosion problems later on.

having said this is there a product you recommend for cleaning up the ali without affecting the anodising? otherwise if i was to polish the anodized finish off, what ball park figure would you expect to get an average T top re anodized $$$???

DIY rolling trailer spare and beach launch wheel

Thought I'd share my recent project in case anyone is looking to do something similar. When I bought my tinny last year the trailer didn't have a spare wheel. I've been risking it on shortish trips to the ramp for the last few months but thought I'd better sort it out before my easter trip down to Denmark and May trip to Exmouth.

I began thinking of ways to mount the spare, and thought about cutting off a stub axle from the old axle and bolting this to the winch post. Then I thought that I may as well buy a full spare hub assembly so that if I did have a bearing failure, I could just remove the whole hub and chuck on the spare rather than sitting on the side of the road trying to tap out bearing races and getting covered in grease. Then I began to think that since I would have a rolling spare, it would be handy to be able to use it as a third wheel for beach launches on the upcoming trip to Exmouth. We are hopefully going to be launching at Pilgramunna on the west side which is very shallow for a long way out (esp at low tide) and I don't think my brother will be too keen to back his new Patrol into the drink. Roadmaster make a swing down bracket for just this purpose but it goes for $160 before you add the stub axle and hub, so I decided to come up with a cheap DIY solution.

Basically, it is a 39mm stub axle and hub assembly with two short sections of galv pipe (3mm thick, 40mm inside diameter); one bolted high onto the winch post for when travelling, and one bolted to the bottom of the draw bar for beach launches. I drilled a 10mm hole through one end of the stub axle and corresponding holes into the ends of the galv pipes. a 10mm bolt with a 4mm 'R clip' is used to lock the axle into either pipe. Only takes a few seconds to remove the locking pin, pull out the wheel and axle, slot it into the other pipe and put the locking pin back in.

Budget

  • Stub axle $0
  • COmplete hub assembly (hub, bearings, wheel nuts, cap) $30
  • Galv pipe $2 (from the tip)
  • U-bolts and plates $25
  • Total $57

Now just need to find a cheap,  used 14" HT rim and tyre.

Anyway, like I said, just thought i'd share in case anyone is thinking of doing something similar. I haven't tested it yet - I'll post an update once I have given it a work out.

installing M260 transducer

just finished installing my new furuno 585 and through hull m260 transducer and was wondering if anybody has some Propylene Glycol left over from their installation as when I called Sigma Chemicals on Friday they only sell twenty litre drums of the stuff and i Figure I will only need about two.

Mercruiser 4.3 MPI

can anyone shed some light on how to get a mercruiser talking to a HDS or just compatible with NMEA 2000? I have been looking at the smartcraft guages and I can't tell if I have to install a $600 guage or not just so I can have a NMEA output....

Primarily I would like to be able to see how much fuel I am using but it would also be nice to utilise the functions on the HDS info page too...

Hillary's Boat Show

Just wondering if worth going along to the show this weekend?

Cheers.

Furuno 620- what Tranny???

Guys, I have just bought a 2052 Trophy and I was hoping you could help with how I should set it up... I have dash mounted the HDS7 and I was going to fit the FCV 620 to the hard top so it can be seen from the whole deck. before I starter to run cables and drill holes I wanted to make sure I fitted the best system I could. I had thought that I might sell the 620 and upgrade to the 585 with a 1KW tranny but after doing a bit of a search I saw that someone had some screen shots from a 620 @ 180m depth and the resolution looked great. is there a need to spend another 3k on a 585 to get the same results, on average i only fish upto 45/50m but would like to be able to go 150m+ if I felt the urge.. Basicaly what I am asking is what is the best transducer I can fit as the 620 only has a 600w output? does anyone have a similar boat / fcv620 set up they can advise on the type and postion of their transducer?

Also does anyone know how to network the smartcraft of the Mercrusier to the Lowrance? It had a Navman when I bought it but I would rather get the smartcraft working with the HDS.

Cheers Guys...

Tournament 2000

Just thinking of an upgrade to a Tournament 2000 with a 150 Etec. Just realised the dealer is a sponsor on here also which is good. Time to be rid of the Ally and slide into something more comfortable, any suggestions would be appreciated

Cheers  nev
