hydrofoil?
Submitted by MetroMako on Mon, 2012-08-06 17:37gday i am wondering whether or not to put a hydrofoil on my boat.
have heard good things and bad things.
GOOD THINGS: fuel consumption up on the plane a bit better and levels out quicker.?
BADTHINGS:not as stable when anchored or just sitting there.?
is any of this true?.

Tilt up or tilt down when not in use?
Submitted by Browny on Wed, 2012-08-01 12:56Just querying if there is a general trend for people to leave their motors fully tilted up or tilted down when sitting in the driveway waiting for the next use.
Is either of the above good/bad for the hydraulics??
Cheers,
Browny.

Drift set up.
Submitted by Gav475 on Mon, 2012-07-30 11:39Am planning my next trip to Exmouth with the boat. Last year was the first trip up there with the boat and I was struggling with the sea anchor set up. Because of the tides the boat drifts toward the anchor rather than away from it as it does in Perth local waters. Is it worth using it at all! What is the preferred set up for tidal areas, or is it just a case of fishing the slack water on the drift either side of the tide change and anchoring the rest of the time, bearing in mind that the boat is only a 4.75 Quintrex.

Installed Dinghy Floor
Submitted by Bruce on Sat, 2012-07-28 12:06Hey guys,
thought I'd put up a couple of pictures of how I have put in a cheap and effective flooring in my tinny.
Firstly, went to Bunnings and bought some light weight metal bars that drill into the ribs which act as support for the Marine Ply. Also got some 9mm AA Marine Grade Ply which was cut down to size through a bit of trial and error until it slotted in nicely. Couple of galvanised screws and it's done.
Off to BCF and grabbed some blue carpet. Drilled in 2 screws into the ply to hold it in place while I cut it to size. It really is as easy as that! A couple of extra bits like cleats, rod holders and cup holders and it's all good.
All up, about 3 hours work, and you have yourself a sturdy deck, which is light weight and strong without adding too much weight to the dinghy, and not costing too much either.
(Some pics from before, during and after)

Outboard flushing time?
Submitted by r.gates on Wed, 2012-07-25 21:44Hi all
Just come back from Darwin and after we came back from a fishing trip, the brother-in-law (or his nephew, depending on who's boat we fished from) would flush their outboards for at least 15 mins...sometimes longer. When I flush mine, it's for approx. 5 mins and when I asked them about why they flush theirs for so long, they told me that it takes that long to get all the salt out.
With that in mind, I was wondering how long you guys flush your outboards for? Am I short changing myself and doing damage if I only flush for 5 mins or is 15 mins just overkill??
regards
rusty...

Westerberg
Submitted by Magic on Tue, 2012-07-24 15:55I'm toying with the idea of selling my current boat which is a 2006 Trailcraft Profish 475 with a 60hp four stroke Yammie to purchase an ali around the 6 meter mark.
One of the boats on the short list is Westerberg’s 6.1m “Eclipse”.
The question is does anyone own one or been a regular user/passenger of this model Westerberg. Are they a good rig, what is the ride like and how do they handle both underway and at rest. Any additional info on build quality overall finish etc would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Need some boat seats made.
Submitted by Nath86 on Sun, 2012-07-22 14:31Hi all, I'm chasing someone that makes boat seats as mine have seen better days.
I assume all it is is some marine ply, foam and then the material to cover it.
Does anyone know of or can reccommend anyone that would do this, I'm chasing 4 to be made.
I'm in Karratha but willing to get from Perth and get them sent up if needed.
Cheers Nath

Bunks
Submitted by Fossil on Sat, 2012-07-21 07:26What's the best timber to make a set of bunks from? I've got possibly the worst designed tinny trailer on the planet & loading single handed is a nightmare. The metal fab side of rebuilding the trailer is easy for me but I don't know jack about timber & I don't want to fork out for a set of ready made bunks, it's not worth the expense just for a tinny.

Cockburn Sound this Saturday
Submitted by joycey on Tue, 2012-07-17 20:09Hi guys,
I am a new boat owner ( 5.3m boat ) and planning to head out in Cockburn Sound this Saturday for the first time after some squid.
I'd be grateful for your opinions on whether the forecast conditions look good, they seem ok to me.
I notice there is a reasonable swell but I presume this is not so much an issue within the Sound.
Any tips on how and where to go squidding much appreciated!
Cheers.

Alternator - All Sorted
Submitted by doublej on Sun, 2012-07-15 16:16Hi all
I went to change out my alternator yesterday and i didn't unhook the batteries.
I arced one wire on the alternator case. A little spark but that was about it.
When I had finished and went to start the motor I had no ignition , completly dead.
All my radio's, trim, lights, bildge pumps & everything else works.
Just nothing when I turn the key.
I have checked all the engine fuses and all seem to be good.
Any idea's on what damage I might have done and how to rectify.
Engine is a 4.3ltr V6 mercruiser 2010 model.
All help appriciated
Cheers

transducer upgrade advice
Submitted by shortfuse on Tue, 2012-07-10 15:08Hi to all, first post on a forum so hopefully I will get it right. Have been reading comments here for a while now and seems to be plenty of people around with some good advise to share, so I will shoot off my first question and look forward to some good feedback.
I am looking at uprading my 600W transom mount transducer on our Furuno sounder, was considering a 1KW shoot through but after contacting the boat manufacturer they advised I best go with a through hull type. I have been to Taylors and they suggested a low profile 1KW bronze through hull 200/50 KHz. After receiving more info from the guys at Cruisecraft I found out that there is also a 200kHz only version in the same housing which is available in a narrow beam 6 degree or a wide beam format.
Being as I fish mainly in the 40-100m range targeting bottom dwellers what would you choose?
Thanks Michael

Rego Fees
Submitted by Fossil on Tue, 2012-07-10 06:13This is going to seem like a stupid question but how much (roughly) does it cost to register a 12-14ft tinny with a 6hp motor on it for a year & what's boat trailer rego worth as well? Please don't link me to the PDF on the department of transport site, my computer has a fit when I try to open a PDF so I've got to ask you guys instead. Looking at buying a tinny this week but want to make sure that the rego etc isn't some ridiculous amount first, thanks.

Outboard Jacking Plates
Submitted by Doooma on Wed, 2012-07-04 09:12Guys, as many will know Im chasing an outboard for my new project being a 21 foot fraser...
Transom is suited to 20inch outboards... BUT 99% of the outboards Im interested in are bloody 25inch..
Has anyone had any experience in jacking plates that claim you can then put a 25" outboard on a 20" transom?
The one Im looking at claims to be rated up to 300hp outboards... Thats a LOT of weight...
I only want to mount between 150hp -200hp max..
Do you think I'll be ok with a jacking plate?
I'd hate to be 30 mile off the coast and have to make Carnarvonite put down his stubbie and come rescue my ass because my outboard is the start of a new artificial reef!!!!!

Alvey reel flush mount
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Sun, 2012-07-01 15:31Hi, I recently bought a second hand Alvey reefmaster boat winch and I know you can buy different mounting options. I prefer to get the flush mount one. It may be a long shot but, maybe someone has one and has no use for it. I know you can get them for around $75 but if someone has one lying around I would rather pay someone less then that and both of us would be happy.
Let me know what you have and how much you want for it.
Cheers
